Daron Malakian has been a so underrated guitarist. I like when he gets the credit that he deserves. He has been a huge inspiration over a lot of people.

To think that they were on actual CONAN O'BRIEN after just releasing their self-titled album is insane. And they thought they'd be underground. I can't imagine what that feels like.
This was aired in early 2000, well over a year after releasing the album. They had toured rather extensively for it by this point. But I do agree, I don't think they had planned on being this commercialized.
Back in this era, people would just have a "wtf" looking faces watching this band live on Conan O'Brien. "Are these guys just high or possessed?" Hahaha Kudos to Conan though, he introduces lots of obscure metal/hardcore/punk bands to mainstream Tv and here they are now.

Same! Being raised in a far right-wing conservative household, any variation from the norm was treated as a threat. Upon seeing bands like RATM and SOAD among others for the first time, their unique energies and powerful messages were actually pretty intimidating. And as far as dynamics go, I think SOAD are masters of utilizing that aspect in their music.
I love this performance so much. They had so much personality back then, I loved it. Early System is definitely my favorite. They've really changed a lot, but I can still appreciate what they did with Hypnotize/Mesmerize to an extent.

I'm a huge soad fan, this song was never one of my favorites but the way they perform it here...Serj just adds that epic touch in his singing and his wardrobe alongside daron's batshit crazy and shavo and john's metal. You could see here this band was destined for greatness.
Props to Conan and the producers for giving them that shot. System was still a new thing then and not really understood and to give them this opprotunity was just great.
