As American consumers, we need US manufactured advanced chips at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, the cost of producing logic chips in US is almost double of that in Taiwan. TSMC has decades of owning and running a chip plant in Camas, Washington State. It never achieved the cost competitiveness comparable to those TSMC fab plants in Taiwan. Thinking of US manufactured chips as imposing a 100% custom duties on foreign supplied chips. We cannot tolerate this cost increase. The best way is to ensure continuous chip supply is to protect Taiwan from Chinese aggressions.

Look at Russia-Ukraine war. Three years, no end in sight. If US relied on Taiwanese production and China started war in Taiwan- how can US sustain years of war without chips? Having domestically produced chips increases US robustness in case of war and removes incentive for China to decapitate Taiwanese chips production thus reducing US military capability to using whatever is in stockpiles with no hopes for new production of weapons.
And I disagree with the logic “everything is cheaper overseas, so let’s just forget about US manufacturing”

    • @johnjacobjinglehimerschmid3555

It's double here because in part:
      1. Cheaper labor
      2. Fabs overseas typically are foundry, meaning they don't innovate chip, they just innovate mfg'ing
      3. I also believe more gov't investment in the sector.
However, the might of TSMC sure isn't hidden, Laid off 13 years ago in part because we couldn't compete with TSMC's mfg'ing costs. Minimum 8 years before being laid off that we competed in mfg'ing costs with asian fabs. I feel the gov't needs to invest in advanced fabs in America, not build them for these multibillion $$ companies but fund innovation to give to these companies to USE but not charge for to make chips.

They built a cement factory out there and multiple new industrial facilities including a gas production plant (gas, not fuel/petrol) and now the desert on the south side of the 303 is set to be a massive housing community of stores and shops that is current state land being auctioned off the likely Pulte homes. The development of semiconductor manufacturing today involves more than just knowledge and equipment; it also encompasses cultural environment, social resources, national values, and industry culture. This is evidenced by the different production capabilities of Intel, Samsung, and TSMC, despite having similar equipment and technological knowledge. If Taiwan were to be invaded by the Chinese government, its current state would be destroyed, and the world would lose the 90% of advanced semiconductor capacity that relies on Taiwan. This impact goes beyond Taiwan's security, posing a threat to the normal development and survival of the entire world.

I worked in Taiwan microchips industry for 15yrs now.
People might think Samsung/Intel can just make their own fabs to take the bulk of this industry from TSMC.
But what they don't know TSMC don't care about making more chips, they specialize the YIELD of those chips! lol!
Intel gave up on making these chips decades ago because they could not make the yield profitable.
Imagine making 5pcs of bread each piece cost $1 to make and after baking 1pc got burned, and because customers only buy and pay for the good bread you already lost revenue by each bad-bread you produced.
That is why TSMC call it 5nm-process, 2nm-process because its all about recipe and technique in making those chips to make sure during testing at least 90% of those chips are good in order to profit in making it.

Taiwan uses semiconductors as a weapon against China. By attacking Taiwan, the global supply of semiconductors would undoubtedly be disrupted. This is similar to when Russia invaded Ukraine, which caused a disruption in the global wheat supply. For this reason, China wants to build its own semiconductor companies, as does the United States. The goal is to ensure that the global supply of semiconductors is no longer vulnerable to disruption. On the other hand, this development would weaken Taiwan’s leverage against China, while the world would no longer need to focus on Taiwan. This diminishes Taiwan's strategic importance.

This is visibly an old documentary, and it's quite naive in several respects. And quite misinformed. It's important to note that there are two major components that China doesn't have, apart from the know-how (that they try to get by luring TSMC's employees): photolithography and chip design software. Contrary to what the documentary claims, ASML doesn't produce chips; they make the best photolithography machines that TSMC and other fabs need to make their chips (and no, ASML doesn't only sell to the top 3 fabs; they have a lot of other customers). The major design software vendors aren't Chinese, either, and it's mandatory to make chips, too. Something else to know is that those fabs are exponentially costly, so they need a worldwide customer base to support the daily cost of operating them, let alone build new fabs for the upcoming technology nodes. If China invades Taiwan, not only will they miss the support for the next nodes, but their market will be reduced to China (on the brink of bankruptcy), Russia (not better), and a few other minor players. It's simply not sustainable. It wouldn't be the end of the world for the West, either. It'd be sad not to have the latest nodes, but it's perfectly possible to save money and live with older ones.
I don't understand why the documentary is so obsessed with microprocessors. TSMC and the other fabs build all sort of chips, like NVIDIA's GPUs. And more importantly memories, that are also a key component.
The (obviously old) part on Intel's new fab is funny, too. They're in such a bad situation right now that one may wonder if they were the best choice for such investments.

TSMC has finalized plans to build seven advanced chip factories in Taiwan, producing 2-nanometer and 1.6-nanometer chips that are two generations ahead of the global competition. The total investment amounts to nearly US$300 billion. TSMC makes enough profit to cover its capital every six months. Only semiconductor companies that make significant profits can afford to invest US$300 billion in building new, more advanced chip manufacturing plants. Do TSMC's competitors have the capability to invest US$300 billion in building new, more advanced chip factories? If not, then TSMC will continue to lead! When tsmc builds a factory in Arizona, there will be many people studying there, and everyone will learn their part well. Then it will surpass Intel. Although Intel is doing the same thing

The supply chain in Taiwan is the most critical key of the manufacturing process. yes, TSMC is the most important and biggest one, yet there are many many companies that cooperating with TSMC are inescapable, like IC testing and packaging. And this supply chain is very mature, that is the reason why other countries like Korea, Japan or USA can't simply copy another TSMC on its own.
How can we prove the statement above? take Samsung and intel as an example, they are buying the exactly same EUV machines from ASML, but they just not able to build the same quality of chips or price competitiveness as TSMC's.
