I got my Argo stuck in the Delta Marsh on Sunday and found my Warn to be stuck in freespool. I spent 2 3/4 walking out. I was a skeptical about your fix but after a ride back in on Monday I had it fixed in 5 minutes and was out in 1. Thanks
Thank you so much. I believe my warn winch is having this same issue. It is only two years old, I think I’ve used it three or four times. While I was in Colorado I flipped the dial to freespooling so I could pull the cable out, couldn’t get it to lock back up and wind the cable in. I Thought maybe I had dirt or rocks stuck in there. I took it to the car wash and sprayed it down, still wouldn’t work. I can hear the winch motor spinning, but won’t lock up to wind the cable back in. Great video, simple easy fix.
Finally got my winch apart, problem exactly like you said. Hardest part of this fix was getting the snap ring out because my winch is mounted in a tight location. Did the repair, got it back together, works like new! Probably saved hundreds on what Warn Winch or the ATV dealer would have charged me!
Good video. My Warn 2500 on my Kodiak 700 has the cable stuck I think. It only goes one inch either way but does have power. It also won't turn to unlock into free spool. Do you think this is the same issue? Damn, my unit is brand new. Any help would be great. Thanks.
Morning Bob, yes the snap ring plier tips were small. I had a cheap snap ring plier kit and I used the smallest 90° plier in the kit. I can measure with calipers when I get home for you but probably around 30 thousandths tips would work.
Just make the one sharp square edge on each side into a tapered edge and you can test it by putting the metal bracket back on. I think I even added a little grease. You shouldn't have to take a lot off to make the bracket work without hanging up.

How much do you need to file down? Do you have any pictures?
