  • Without Crisis, would we have gotten Infinity Gauntlet?
In 1985, DC had a crisis in continuity. Trying to understand what was going on in the DC Multiverse was an exercise in frustration. Writer Marv Wolfman agreed and had an idea…that idea turned into one of the biggest and best events in the history of comics - CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS. Crisis not only hit the reset button on the DC Universe, it also raised the stakes across the entire comics industry. Supegirl DIES! Barry Allen DIES! Crisis would become shorthand for high concept, epic storytelling. It’s impact extending now beyond comics, into television, with the CW’s Arroverse version of the story. Go BEHIND THE PANEL on Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The thing with most crossovers is that they usually don't have an epic artist like George Perez drawing them. George used his comic knowledge to be a better artist. George likes to add Easter eggs, nods to old comics, and crystal clear detail.

Commentary was spot on. I grew up in the 1960's reading comic books. DC & Marvel were at the forefront, but there were other comic book publishers like Gold Key, Fawcett, Charlton, and even Archie Comics. It was funny, Pete's Barber Shop (where I got my hair cut as a kid) was DC Comics only.... Earl's Barber Shop (my grandfather's barber shop) was mostly Marvel and Archie Comics. But I digress....I was in my late twenties stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, when Crisis debuted. I was awestruck at how good it was. I'm in my sixties now, and I still have my comic book collection from back in the day, and even have the Crisis on Infinite Earth Graphic Novel. And a few George Perez autographed posters I've yet to hang. Crisis was outstanding. I just hope the CW doesn't tarnish that history by falling flat.

As a young reader when Crisis came out, I can say that pre-crisis DC was not to difficult to understand, and loved the alternate Earths. Being able to read alternate WWII stories with super heroes, "mirror universe" Justice League, annual cross overs between the current versions and the original versions of the character, seeing the actual next generation of heroes, were all reasons to enjoy comics. Crisis is my all time favourite event, but it just put unnecessary handcuffs on creators (which they still operate under), while making things make way less sense (which story is no longer canon, and which is), and worst of all creators have spent decades retelling old stories rather than telling new ones.

The funniest thing in Crisis was one of the original lettercolumns taking totally dissing the almost-concurrent Secret Wars. They compared Secret Wars to DC's Super Powers, designed to sell toys, and explained that Crisis had more important goals.

Well, except for his Uncle Zor-el and Aunt Alura who were living on Rokyn with the rest of the previous inhabitants of the Bottle city of Kandor, all of whom being Kryptonian are technically related to him if you go back enough generations. Which also means there's the Kryptonians in the Phantom Zone too. And least we forget, people consider their pets part of their families, so there's Krypto, Superman's pet dog as well. Hmmmm, being the last son of Krypton isn't quite as lonely as it's made out to be. ;)

That's the problem with Marvel and DC. They've made so many versions of the same characters that it got very confusing of which story arcs/versions were Canon. This is what's killing the comic book industry instead of them pushing new or characters that were slept on. Too many unoriginal writers working on the same characters creating their own versions of characters well past their season.

Great event, but most people overlook that Supergirl was a totally different character in the Legion of Superheroes where she was a fully developed, heavy hitter in the Legion which was compelling and worth watching. She was ironically underutilized in her own comic, but as a main character in the Legion, she really shined as a strong female hero.

My favorite death in CRISIS was the sudden demise of Earth 3's SUPERWOMAN. She was an evil, alternate version of Wonder Woman who often battled a heroic alternate version of Lex Luthor. During the CRISIS, Luthor sees a wave of antimatter about to destroy Superwoman (who apparently doesn't see it coming behind her). He yells out a warning, but she's so annoyed by him that she's in the middle of yelling back "Luthor? What do YOU wan--" when the antimatter wave disintegrates her. A close second on my favorite CRISIS death list is the demise of the Legion of Superhero's Kid Psycho. He's seen running from the antimatter wave, but he sort of just trips over his own feet and knocks himself out. While he's out cold the antimatter wave, of course, disintegrates him.

Crisis on Infinite Earths, while a great story in and of itself, was not the roaring success it is often made out to be. In retrospect it did away with a lot of cool concepts DC wound up reviving. And created more continuity headaches than it solved. Ironically it took multiple additional crises to make sense of everything again. Er, sort of. Even Supergirl came back after only a few years. Good thing too as she was always a great character. Especially when drawn by Michael Turner.

Nothing is more confusing than dozens of continuities. Not to mention that a long-time fan has spent hundreds (maybe thousands) of dollars on the continuity he/she knows. It seems awfully unfair for DC to unilaterally kill the continuity that you invested in to pacify whiney inexperienced writers.

Sadly The Grate Crisis is responsible for the major reboots we have today like Zero Hour, The New 50ew, rebirth and G5. they are trying to recapture the success they had with it. sadly they are chasing the high that they can never get again because at the time we had never seen anything like it now it is a tried and tiered trope that we have all gotten tiered of. I wish they would just give as good stories and well writing characters. please do think that what I said is an indictment of crisis but an indictment of the comic industry today that has lost imagination and creativity and is obsessed with a political massage, much like Hollywood. add that to the drive to make a cheep dollar. I have been re-reading G.i. Joe from the 80's and Crisis and they are better written if not always better drawn, inked and colored then today's books just like the older movies and 99% of TV shows are better. well I will get off my soap box now thank you for reading this rant.

    • @scinnyc

I gotta disagree. I personally liked Zero Hour. It was more of a time Crisis than a multiverse Crisis. And Hal Jordan's motivations to rewrite time were understandable. It also killed off Justice Society members who were too dated & corny for the current era. And the art from the 80s can't compare with the art now. The art in comics is far more diverse in range than it was back then. But John Burne and Geogre Perez were the exceptions. But I do agree that creativity is lacking in a lot of areas today and that the New 52 was trash.

And after almost 4 decades things are 200 thousand more complicated and harder for new readers to enter into this universe.
Plus there was only one type of reader and kids aren't allowed anymore.

It killed comics... It's not a coincidence that a lot of shops closed 5 years later. Crisis came about because Stan Lee ticked off his talent and they all went over to DC... DC was better than Marvel in the '70's until it became a 2nd Marvel...

Superman is one of the best examples of what you just described. In an attempt to boost sales, DC brought in John Byrne because of his work on X-Men and Fantastic Four. Although Byrne's Superman has its fans and many consider it to be a classic, it really was a disaster.

There is a reason for that but without Superman there wouldn't be a Supergirl. I don't think they will kill her in the series. The season isn't even done yet.

@@cindyvindrik492 Superman was first. Her whole reason is because of him. She was created as a means to bring a female demographic to Superman. She can have her own comics and be her own character but she will always have that recognition of being Superman's cousin. What makes the least sense is she is still called Supergirl despite being an adult being a grown woman. You are right though. There are fans with sexist views towards her and those disgust me. She has been able to grow to being a far better character from her silver and golden age years. Just wish she grew into a different name.

Pleas follow the story of the comic and let Kara Zo-el dies. After that they can reboot the show aND hire a better writer Team. Hire also Laura Vandervoort again as Kara Zor-el. Maybie that bring pease in the Supergirl comic fandome.

I am not a fan of Crisis infinite Earths or the CW Network versions of Dc Comics Hero's to me they are Characters from an alternate Universe. they are interesting. The Actors who play them are excellent but not the good old DC Comic heros of the 1950's & 60's & 70's When I was heavy into reading comics. I do not like the changes DC comics made to the Standard 1950-60's-70's DC Characters.

It's hard to explain to later readers just how HUGE Crisis felt at the time. It really was the biggest thing in comics.
