one of the best parts about elijah is not just that he tries to protect his family no matter what, but he is defined by those he loves.
Always and forever is one of the reason why the originals is such a good show and without Elijah being the glue that keeps his family together and keeping the promise with every moment of his life he's such a awesome character but I have to say I personally prefer Klaus

I like to see myself as Elijah but instead I’m Klaus…and my own brother is Elijah…he is the noble and honourable while I’m the monster…scaring everyone and anyone that comes my way..😂😂😂😂😂
I'm not going to lie I'd much rather be Klaus than Elijah is so much of a monster than Klaus I never get how people don't see that the only difference is he does monstrous things for family Klaus does because he wants to and can.

Haley's death broke Elijah so it was easy for him to die with klaus
And the fact he was in alot of ways responsible for it happening but also I feel like he believed if he died they would be able to reunite in the afterlife
