I believe the extra shaving in the pick-up cavity was to see if the wood was Korina or Mahogany. Saw this in the control cavity of a similar black explorer made from Korina.
That is the NICEST one I can remember seeing...of all of them. The gold hardware on the black is quite a cool visual. One thing I will point out is that the intonation seems to be pretty close to perfect, as exampled when you played your first open chords at the beginning of the playing demo. Nice clean up. YOU take care.
I have a 1985 Explorer, ebony finish, lots of finish checking, chrome hardware, no pickguard, uncovered pickups so I suppose it's a 'Stripped down' model but it has an ebony fingerboard rather than rosewood. No case, so it's really knocked about. Oh, and it's lefthanded.
@guitarjunkie7124 not gonna lie, a little jelly. I love Explorers, just always been out of my price range. I'm not a big fan of the Epi 50s body one, I like the 70s Explorer best personally.
Nice Model... I think Allen Collins from Skynyrd, when I see an explorer. My first concert 1974, they opened for DaveMason SteveMiller... Long hair, jumping all over the stage the rest is his story...
For the parts drawer because those things cost a pretty penny and its only players grade in his eyes. First he flip the guitar for double the price, then he takes the "good" parts. lol
Just bought a Firefly FFLX honeyburst explorer inspired for $200 new. Love it! Played like a dream right out of the box. No setup required. Mahogany body/neck , uncovered humbuckers, rosewood fingerboard, bone nut.
A tap n die kit wil fix the bridge posts!!!! Its very easy!!! If your affraid to do it give to Pete down at the Texas guitar show this weekend. We will do it and send it back to you!!!! Sadly Gibson did a few questionable things at this time. We ordered in some more Heritage series Explorers and Flying V.s They were using the D serial numbers than a few G serial numbers came in too. Still called Heritage which way more money than a regular Explorer. Anyway i opened it up and after close examination it wasn't korina aka African Limba wood it was Mahogany. One in White, one in Black The Flying V in Candy Apple however was in Korina wood. Any of these are marketed Korina Heritage series and you get past the C serial numbers. I would make darn sure it was what i thought it was!!!!! The New Heritage series was a fun fresh attempt to get back to doing things the old way!!! I believe they did a phenomenal job once they introduced the Historic series!!!!! SO SPOT ON!!!!!!!!!
My memory of the 70s was going to Metro Music in Atlanta and there being walls full of what now are very special Gibsons and Fenders for around $250. My older brother would have a Les Paul until he needed some money, then have a Strat a month later. Never Vs , or Explorers , but numerous of the others.
Bought and sold a bunch of guitars at Metro Music back in the 80s and 90s. If you loved guitars, it was a dangerous place to "window shop"! Youd end up coming home with something you didn't know you needed until you saw it!😂
I am just about to paint my 1984 project. It is all maple body and neck. I brought the new dirty fingers pickups and some locking grovers. What color should I paint it people? I am tied between cream/white and natural. I ordered a gold logo because it was gone when i got it. oh its a 76 style (january 84 nashville) so straight knob layout and black guard came with it. Just going to do an abr 1 replacement nothing khaler fancy or evertuney the color will decide gold chrome or black :)
I went to the GC in Agusta and pulled a used Explorer off the wall and I loved it. Within 2 weeks of that day I had bought a Custom Shop 3 pickup SG, the Explorer, and a Fender Amp! All on zero interest with my GCCC! Then I got $430 worth of store credit for using the GCCC and I got an Epiphone NightHawk for free! 😁 By the way, the SG was marked down from $5,999 to $3499!
If I thought I could match the price you were asking, Trogly, and I thought I was going to play it and not just let it take up space, I would consider being the purchaser of that Explorer. It sounded great to me. For whatever it's worth, I think I could pick up the residents of it with the volume switched all the way off, even on my phone speaker.
I have a 1981 explorer in white. The funny bit us the serial number is in a much smaller font than this one and it doesn't have a Made In The USA stamp.
I've got an 83 that plays and sounds great, but was beat to hell when I got it. Those marks where your arm rest are bracelets from a glam metal player.
I would call this a well used, but not abused guitar. Looks to be in pretty good condition for a 48 year old guitar to me..Also really like the look of the rosewood fretboard.
So what exactly do the pickup readings tell us? These pickups read at pretty low numbers from what I’ve seen, but didn’t seem like super mellow in sound or anything (unless my speakers just suck lol)
Guitar sounds knarly. I like explorers, and I recently got a epiphone warhorse. It sounds good with those gibson pickups. I'd like a gibson but I need more money.
I have one like this, plus 2 karinas, plus a karina bass. I'm sure I have some others around somewhere. One of my favorite styles from Gibson. I'm looking for a white one someday. Got to slow down to many Ive got the sickness. Thanx Trogly good episode.
My first guitar was a Global SG knockoff. Out of curiosity one day I removed the pickgiard not expecting much. But to my surprise that body was made of mahogany. May noylt have been a good grade of it but it was nonetheless.
You're not going to keep a black guitar clean if you really really play it... it's a nonstop battle , so sometimes I don't clean mine except dust it off ..... I've seen the 80s explorers perform on stage and they can flat kick out the jams
when it comes to Korina Explorers and V's i really don't see why they should be so much more expensive than mahogany guitars.. Everywhere i look i can buy Korina for about a third to half the price of Honduras Mahogany...
Gibson marketed it as rare and desirable, also benefits heavily from the name sounding like some Princess...which also lends to marketability but is basically another Mahogany
@@infinidominion I know it is all just Gibson marketing. The name Korina is mostly used in the US as far as i know. over here the wood itself doesn't cary that fancy name. we simply call it white Limba. Only the fancy name on Gibson models for us

Just call it Murphy lab and add 3k
Your funny, pretty much the same thing a little more finish checking!
Trogly Lab
i mean he did list it for 5150, bought for 2399
Exactly
At least
What happened to the gold Posi-Loks that were on the guitar early on in the video?!
Cool...cool...and cool ! The gold hardware looks great on that Ebony finish ! she sounds good too...Thanks Trogly !
The bridge post can be cleaned up with the proper die or even a sharp file to clean up the threads

You removed the original gold posiloks it had on it for nickle strap locks😢
Hopefully temporary.
A shame, he probably removed them for their value (or for restoring another guitar) but not mentioning it is a bit dishonest IMO.
He could have at least replace them with Gold to match the rest of the hardware.🙄
I have about 10 E2s. What are you looking to swap?
Id love to get one of those!
Bruh. What??
@@lost6872I’ve been collecting Explorers for many years. Always loved the E2s. I have way too many guitars.

@@guitarjunkie7124 ive got a 77 Gibson RD Custom that’s my number 1 currently
5:10 could take a small thread cutter to it, should make it so it can be used proberly again.
You don't need to replace the garffed up bridge post. Just use the appropriate thread die to clean it up 😮
That black explorer looks proper. No custom shop relicing required.
I had that same 80s explorer case for my 90s explorer, back in 2004.
Nice Model... I think Allen Collins from Skynyrd, when I see an explorer. My first concert 1974, they opened for DaveMason SteveMiller... Long hair, jumping all over the stage the rest is his story...
When I see an explorer I think of me, cause I love them! Thanx man no I think of him too lets go Skinard.
I also think IMMEDIATELY of Allen Collins. Iconic Explorer player.
Guitar's like these bring back memories of my younger days.
12:20 Robbed the diamond posilock strap buttons lol

@@TheAlexFromGalax absolutely lol those things are worth some serious coin by themselves

Wow! No wonder that’s a well used guitar… it has an incredible sound! One of the best you’ve ever demoed.
I bought my Explorer in '81. It's E2 curly maple in tobacco burst. Gigged through the 80s with it and still have it today. It needs work though.
I'd love to find a clean E2. Been looking and they are all (so far) all beat up.
Never liked the Explorer til I saw The Edge play one. Never liked the SG til I held one. Love it. Such a playable guitar.
Detective Trogly on the case. Always an informative episode. 👍

Trogly, you could repair the marred post threads using a thread chasing die. They are boogered up, but I think a tap & die set could cure it.

Gotta love those Super Humbuckers! Them old tarbacks are underrated, if only they could fix the issue of them failing... \m/

Looks great!
You could use a tap and die set to fix that post threads
I commented the same before seeing your post 😊
Trog you haven't documented a PRS in a long time. A wood library would be dope.
Congrats ! This guitar sounds badass ! Awesome guitar

That is like the two white Explorers Matthias Jabs bought back in that days. Just a black example.
Yes he has those nice white Explorers. Those sound great on the records.
