It's about being alone after losing your other half, your lover. There were 2 then "it's just no good any more since you went away" type lonely. I sang every word just then like it was the 1970s and thousands of other Aussies could too.
The great thing with John is that he has a phenomenal singing history going back decades upon decades. This includes John first singing 'One' back in his late teens/ early twenties. When he was young he sang the higher notes falsetto. To listen to him now, just leaves me in awe of how he has trained his voice. Mind you he's got a big engine in there! Thank you John for giving me so much enjoyment !
Yes. This is one of my favourites. Very Catchy and couldn't be sung better. John is a bloody GOAT and one of my favourite singers EVER! Great show and thank you. God bless.
If you want to get the Farnham goosebumps, check out John with his backup singers, singing "Mary's boy child" and "You'll never walk alone" at a Carol's by candlelight Christmas show. It's great, thank you.
This was when he was younger and it was sung by another artist I think in England and about him and his girlfriend splitting up the lyrics for about that's why one is the loneliest number. A lot of people liked it because it was from in his younger years that song. Point being, I don't think anybody can sing every song and everybody will fall in love with it , I'm not too keen on the song Sadie from his beginnings which would have been forced under management I imagine . But I swear to God, it's his voice that everybody is attracted to, he could sing nursery, sing the telephone book and we still get out our wallets and go and pay to watch him . Brilliant performer , very passionate singer , gorgeous human being, and vocals that few cam match . Absolutely loaded with talent , and a very down-to-earth man. We are blessed to have him in Australia.
ONE was the song by John that cemented in my mind that he was “really” talented and that was in the 1960’s. I worked with John’s cousin back in the 60’s and was impressed with his gentle kindness when his cousin introduced a young teen co-worker to John backstage after a lunch time concert at the Melbourne Town Hall. The young teen led a very restricted life as part of some strict religion and John made her year by taking her hand and saying how nice it was to meet her before kissing her cheek. A sincerely kind man his entire life which is evident by the esteem he is held in by all Australians.
Can you imagine him singing the alphabet ti his kids?😂😂. He first recorded this in 1969 and there is a video of that too. Our fantastic John singing about the No 1 and words cannot explain his skills and personality. ♥️♥️
This song was about someone being on there own. After his love left. 😅 John sings. At the start of the song he sings of two. Then When you went away then he was only one. 😊
It is a song about being single and lonely . It says 2 can be as bad as 1 when I'm alone with you."meaning that if someone is vacant and detached in a relationship and you are trying to make it work for you It is as bad as being alone.
JF very much had pre and post "You're The Voice" era's in his career. YTV was really his reinvention as a performer, and launched the incredible success that spanned 5 decades. "One" was from his earlier poppy, pretty boy Johnny Farnham days. So it kind of is just him playing around somewhat with his die-hard fans, who wind him up screaming for "Sadie the cleaning lady". I think this is about the end of his late 60's stuff. If you get a chance to listen to a song called "Jamie" you'll hear how almost Beatles 60's that style was that he was doing then. This was fun to hear again!!! Happy New Year 🎉
This was a hit when John was Johnny. He wasn’t cool to watch back then. Here he is singing his way and we love it. I just found out that Richard Marx said,”best sing ever was Sam Cooke. Best singer alive today is John Farnham. That was from a famous American who does everything and has won many awards. Now I know I have to say it because John is the best there is.
John covered this song way back in 1969 and it was a hit for him. I think he was just going down memory lane with it. It doesn't really stack up to his later hits but like you say, he was just having some fun.😊
John recorded this when he was 21 years old. Not just playing around, this was part of his repertoire that kept him as King of Pop for 5 straight years. It certainly sounds different the way he does it here than it did when he first recorded it. I guess we all have to grow up!!!!!
You are so correct, a perfect example. This is not his song it's a cover John released it in 1970. Harry Nilsson released it 1968. He turns a crap song into something to listen to when done live. Now that's talent. Happy New Year from Australia 🇦🇺
And when he recorded it every teenage girl in Australia had a poster of him on their wardrobe. The lyrics were talking straight to their puberty blues.
Kaz Martin, I agree with the facts as you have stated. It was one of my favourites when it was first released back in 68 and has been covered by quite a few over the years including our Farnsey. It is not just a song about a number but instead, as it is said in the lyrics that "it's just no good anymore, since you went away" and that one (just himself) is the loneliest number that you'll ever do. Farnsey is superb at the way he can do a cover with a new arrangement and make it his own.
@@peterpurss3113 oh sorry Peter misunderstanding I know what it's about. Would you rather listen to John's 1970 version or this one. 1970's is crap compared to this. That was my point sorry. Cheers
I had never seen this performance and it made me so happy - the swinging of the mic and the high notes he hit. Your reaction actually bought me down a little (even though it was positive overall and you were still praising him). I don’t think it’s a ‘nothing’ song lyrically as others have already pointed out. I appreciate you reacting to him more though so keep it up 👍

John IS the ONE.😍And this was the very first record { the single } I ever bought and played it TO DEATH! Singing along at the top of my lungs - much to the 'delight' of my family... I was 11 and had a desperate crush on John. Also, the lyrics were kinda easy to learn. 🤣
LOL I was 11 as well, but I "fell" for John when "Raindrops.." came out. John was in performing in the city square open air performance and I beg my Mum to take me and she did... I was on "cloud 9" for weeks.
I'm with Debra from 3 days ago but rather than saying that John's had two careers I reckon he's had 3. The king of pop in the 60s, the theatre stuff in the 70s and then everything else after Help and You're the Voice in the 80s.. What would be interesting is to get a reaction to Sadie. Are there any clues from 1967 to what Farnham was going to become as "The Voice"?
Oh that's interesting that you didn't love it, the wordplay in this song has always tickled me, especially the no/know/yes/know lines, and I love the Bond theme style arrangement (that's so much better than the three dog night version soz lol). I guess it's a bit 60s but I love it. Apparently Molly Meldrum said it was the best song John ever put out! It's crazy how much he built his vocals up over the years compared to the first release.
I think you would get a real kick out of watching him sing with Ray Charles in Ray's shake up of the John Lennon classic Imagine. John actually stepped in when Ray had a ear piece malfunction so they did Imagine in the only way Ray will ever be able to. The look on Ray's face, he was genuinely having a blast in the completely random and adlib performance. At first grumpy over the ear piece, John very quickly changed his mood as they sung and played off each other.
My parents had this single record when I was a child ( I’m now 60) and I would play it all the time. You have to remember this song is over 50 years old.
Happy New Year!!! I think you missed the meaning of the song.
