Honestly, I think this might be a remnant of it's original release. If you didn't know, the GC version of Animal Crossing is actually a completely remixed version of the Japanese release (incorporating western holidays and furniture and etc etc.)...but the Japanese release is an updated version of the N64 release. It could be a limitation programmed for a system that didn't use a built in RTC, in order to prevent crashes, bugs...or that might simply be how far the system was realistically able to tell the time.

Game Devs also believed GameCube discs couldn't last 30 years of continual play, as a disc can last forever if properly handled. But will only last about 5-10 years if scratched. 3. If someone left the game on after 2 years straight from the New Year's Eve of 2030 to New Year's Day of 3032, would it break the cycle and allow you to move on?

I think I know how this works. Basically it's an oversight from the developers. The counter for the year that goes up to 2030 is only for the time stored as part of the save data. The limit doesn't actually affect game time itself. So the game can easily go into 2031, and then when you go to save the game is unable to save the year as 2031 due to the limit and instead saves it at 2030. As to why this happens, I have no idea.

The programmers didnt put that in there. Its because the game is a 32bit game. After Dec 31st 2030 the data set for 2031 actually causes a bit overflow that exceeds the 32bit range. This is because PCs count time as seconds rather than regular time and each second is a stored bit. After 2030 theres too many bits. You can think of the end of 2030 as the literal unpatchable Y2K of 32bit systems. This is also why the old iPods will brick themselves if you set the date to this day and it attempts to start 2031 Furthermore the fact that it actually looped back to 2030 shows that the Developers HAVE actually thought about future proofing, or dummy proofing the game. Its purposely programmed that way so little date-skipping Timmy or a future gamer who wants to play it, doesnt; at best crash the game and at worst brick the entire system and/or memory card
For anyone that wants to start the game post 2029: Subtract 28 from the year at use that. (ie. if 2030, set calendar for 2002) and all the dates will line up. The moon phases will be wrong tho. This trick will work until 2099, you just need to keep subtracting.
"Did not future-proof this game-" The game allows for a full-on 29 years after release as well as allowing the game to continue even after reaching the cap. That's more than enough, my guy.

And when I got home I booted up animal crossing on new years on 2030 but much to my surprise tom nook was standing there to greet me with hyper realistic bloody chapped lips and hyper realistic blood pouring out of the eyes! Probably just a glitch I thought however and moved on! And then later I saw there was a river filled with hyper realistic blood and dead bodies filing it of every body I know and lov! Maybe just something wrong with my eye? I thought! And then suddenly I saw tom nook with a axe and hyper realistic blood in real life and then he proceeded to kill me! I think 2031 exists only as a placeholder, it saves up in the RAM, so the next time you boot up the game the ram erases it so you are back into 2030, you aren't supposed to leave the console and the game on for a full year so if you can actually get to 2032 the game will likely crash or something, even if you had the money and enough power to do so, if a lightout happens around november then rip
Kinda went online to look for it. The 2003 calendar uses the same calendar as the 2031 calendar. If you wanted to continue with the same days of the week use the 2003 calendar. The reason for this is because 2032 is a leap year and so is 2004. So 2003 compensates for the leap year the following year and is also the earliest if you want to continue for the longest possible time before resetting the calendar again.
I accidentally did something like what you did with the message board. In New Leaf I was building the cafe but the battery in my 3ds was used fully and needed to be replaced (not the charging battery, the battery IN the 3ds). Once the battery was replaced I didn't realize my animal crossing time somehow went forward like 10 years and my cafe was made in 2029, I realized that my internal 3ds time broke (went back to 2011)as well and changed it all back. (I didn't see the weeds in my town because I had the keep town beautiful ordinance) So now I have a cafe from the future that I made completely on accident. Since I don't time travel, this is probably a one time only thing, the most i've traveled is a few hours.
I think it only goes up to 2030 due to Y2K36. Technically it could probably handle being played until about May 2072 but the developers didn't program it to do that (it can handle being played after around 8th May 2072 at around 4:36am but it will overflow to 1/1/2000.

If it's the Gamecube's limt, does the Wii share this limit, and if not, how would they interact upon going over one but not the other? yes it is a hard limit due to the time being stored in a 32 bit integer, i can go up higher, but stopping at 2030 is like a fail safe. the Wii would have the same limitation
32 bit time would limit it to 2038 if start date is 1970. You can set the gamecube to 2099, and it will rollover into 2100. Changing time put it back to 2000. It possible that gamecube doesn't use the left bit for a negative number (dates before start date are represented this way) and a start date of 2000, meaning that in theory it can go up to 2136. probably stops in the beginning of March to be precise.
The reason it was locked to 2030 is that each variable takes a certain amount of space. Back during this era, using “2030” was the natural space limit without needing to take a bunch of extra space to get up to 2099
I think the game takes the Absolute value of the days you’ve passed so that’s why Lobo didn’t remember you when you literally just saved and quit it’s because it went back in time 365 days from 2031 to 2030, the game doesn’t register -365 days it only registers 365 days so for the characters in the game you haven’t been seen for a year.
This is weird, I remember the year being able to go up to 2099 or something high like that, because I remember asking my cousin if we’ll ever be able to actually play this game when it’s like 70 years old.
the same thing happened with an innotab (basically a tablet for kids) that I had when I was little; the date wouldn't go past 2030 or before 1989. I was convinced that time would "reset" in 2030, and we would go back to 1989. a strange theory that could only come from the mind of a six year old.

My best guess is that this is some sort of failsafe. I remember seeing a video (I think it was the Internet Historian) about how if you set your iphone to a certain date it automatically reverted its clock to sometime whats significantly longer than the expected life of the universe, causing your device to essentially commit suicide. Maybe this is similar in a way. Where if the in game clock gets to a certain point, the interger representing the year ends up bricking the console. So maybe the game has 2031 built into it, but automatically reverts to 2030 to prevent the risk of a catastrophic crash. Its purely speculation and there'd probably be no way to test this (without constantly having a Gamecube/Wii with Animal Crossing on in the background for possibly years, decades, or longer) but it's just speculation

2 minutes in and I am already interested. I think it will either reset to 2001 or experience some sort of overflow glitch...or the world caves in and turns into a black hole. ACNL goes to 2050, and I would test this, but my villagers would all be gone, Isabelle would pester me, my town would be ridden with weeds, etc. With New Horizons coming out, and since you probably don't care too much about ACNL anymore, you should do this with that game. EDIT: Well that is not what I expected. I like how you responded to your future self, and how they mentioned the countdown but it already happened. That is time travel for you.
Not sure if you didn't know this but time travel isn't possible with New Horizons since the time in the game is actually linked to real time for the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere

Kinda went online to look for it. The 2003 calendar uses the same calendar as the 2031 calendar. If you wanted to continue with the same days of the week use the 2003 calendar. The reason for this is because 2032 is a leap year and so is 2004. So 2003 compensates for the leap year the following year and is also the earliest if you want to continue for the longest possible time before resetting the calendar again.

I accidentally did something like what you did with the message board.
In New Leaf I was building the cafe but the battery in my 3ds was used fully and needed to be replaced (not the charging battery, the battery IN the 3ds). Once the battery was replaced I didn't realize my animal crossing time somehow went forward like 10 years and my cafe was made in 2029, I realized that my internal 3ds time broke (went back to 2011)as well and changed it all back. (I didn't see the weeds in my town because I had the keep town beautiful ordinance) So now I have a cafe from the future that I made completely on accident. Since I don't time travel, this is probably a one time only thing, the most i've traveled is a few hours.

I think it only goes up to 2030 due to Y2K36. Technically it could probably handle being played until about May 2072 but the developers didn't program it to do that (it can handle being played after around 8th May 2072 at around 4:36am but it will overflow to 1/1/2000.

Is this a hard limit within Animal Crossing, or is it the limit of the Gamecube? If it's the Gamecube's limt, does the Wii share this limit, and if not, how would they interact upon going over one but not the other? If the Gamecube _can_ go to 2031 and beyond, what if the AC clock isn't offset from the system time and the Gamecube itself is what passes that mark?
yes it is a hard limit due to the time being stored in a 32 bit integer, i can go up higher, but stopping at 2030 is like a fail safe. the Wii would have the same limitation
The Wii definitely has the same limit, though it goes much longer than 2030 of course
32 bit time would limit it to 2038 if start date is 1970. You can set the gamecube to 2099, and it will rollover into 2100. Changing time put it back to 2000. It possible that gamecube doesn't use the left bit for a negative number (dates before start date are represented this way) and a start date of 2000, meaning that in theory it can go up to 2136. probably stops in the beginning of March to be precise.

The reason it was locked to 2030 is that each variable takes a certain amount of space. Back during this era, using “2030” was the natural space limit without needing to take a bunch of extra space to get up to 2099

I think the game takes the Absolute value of the days you’ve passed so that’s why Lobo didn’t remember you when you literally just saved and quit it’s because it went back in time 365 days from 2031 to 2030, the game doesn’t register -365 days it only registers 365 days so for the characters in the game you haven’t been seen for a year.
This is weird, I remember the year being able to go up to 2099 or something high like that, because I remember asking my cousin if we’ll ever be able to actually play this game when it’s like 70 years old.
the same thing happened with an innotab (basically a tablet for kids) that I had when I was little; the date wouldn't go past 2030 or before 1989. I was convinced that time would "reset" in 2030, and we would go back to 1989. a strange theory that could only come from the mind of a six year old.

I honestly expected it to work like the normal gamecube clock where it continues but if you mess up the clock you can't go back past the default max date but it can pass automatically..

My best guess is that this is some sort of failsafe. I remember seeing a video (I think it was the Internet Historian) about how if you set your iphone to a certain date it automatically reverted its clock to sometime whats significantly longer than the expected life of the universe, causing your device to essentially commit suicide. Maybe this is similar in a way. Where if the in game clock gets to a certain point, the interger representing the year ends up bricking the console. So maybe the game has 2031 built into it, but automatically reverts to 2030 to prevent the risk of a catastrophic crash. Its purely speculation and there'd probably be no way to test this (without constantly having a Gamecube/Wii with Animal Crossing on in the background for possibly years, decades, or longer) but it's just speculation

What if Animal Crossing is just predicting the actual end of the world in 2030?
2 minutes in and I am already interested. I think it will either reset to 2001 or experience some sort of overflow glitch...or the world caves in and turns into a black hole. ACNL goes to 2050, and I would test this, but my villagers would all be gone, Isabelle would pester me, my town would be ridden with weeds, etc. With New Horizons coming out, and since you probably don't care too much about ACNL anymore, you should do this with that game.
EDIT: Well that is not what I expected. I like how you responded to your future self, and how they mentioned the countdown but it already happened. That is time travel for you.

Not sure if you didn't know this but time travel isn't possible with New Horizons since the time in the game is actually linked to real time for the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere
