Legendary fight, this would start Joe's record reign as heavyweight champion.
Joe Louis vs James J Braddock 22/06/1937 United States Comiskey Park, Chicago, Illinois, United States
“He was the most courages man I’ve ever fought” -Joe Louis on James J. Braddock
Louis could have decked a rhino with that punch. Both were underrated. Anyone who is willing to risk themselves in the ring deserves respect. Win , lose or draw.
Joe Louis is so well built. No steroids, pure nature
Ridiculous biceps
It says alot about what a great fighter Braddock was that he floored a prime joe Louis, not everyone could say that, he even beat number one contender tommy farr after this fight.
Braddock was very skilled and could really take a punch, he was probably the mentally toughest fighter of all time if you looked at all he's been through
Huge straight right finish. Louis always said Braddock was the toughest man he fought.
Boxing Reels Tougher than the fight he had against Tommy Farr? I find that hard to believe!
Honest Person it was Louis words
I know that at least one of the Billy Conn fights was very difficult for Louis.
He actually said he was the most courageous man he ever fought
braddock was 32 years old, 9 years older than lewis at the time of this fight. he was 30 years old, 4 years older than max bear, when he took the title from bear. he was considered to be too old for the boxing game, at that time.
Just watched Cinderella man. Do I came here to watch Louis fight bradockk. Amazing fight with two great fighters. Joe Luis later said James was the toughest opponent he ever fought. Much respect for both fights and may they Rest In Peace.
Braddock was not only a great fighter, he evidently was a man of high character was well. We could use his attitude today.
My dad grew up during the Depression and would have been 14 years old when this fight took place. He said Louis was the best heavyweight ever, and he held the title 12 years. Kudos to Braddock though, he was one tough hombre against the "Brown Bomber".
These guys really got after it, with both men throwing a lot of punches. Both fighters appear to be courageous and willing to take a punch.
"When he hit me with that left-right combination, I could've stayed down on the canvas for three weeks"
That 1-2 Lewis threw at the end, culminating in that marvellous straight right flush on the jaw of Jimmy, was incredible. Joe Lewis was a freak. Absolutely underrated & mistreated by his country in his latter years which was very sad.
I can’t get enough of these old clips.
A left uppercut to the arm then an overhand right. He was a very calm and patient fighter
Before Louis threw the right for the KO he slapped Braddock's left hand out of the way to get the clear shot. I never saw anything like that.
this is great footage
It is all a a big cycle. Louis in his prime defeats the aging Braddock, Marciano in his prime defeats the aging Louis. Marciano was the only one to get out on top and retire before he was too old.
No Boxers can beat their age in the word.
@@RedFeng007 George foreman. Ever heard of him? Yeah, he pretty much beat his age.
@@smalltrashman4227
He can't fight prime Bowe, Lennox Lewis and Tyson. They will be too much for him to handle at his age. Those 3 hit much harder than Holyfield.
Holyfield will be a safe fight for George Foreman.
@@RedFeng007 But he still became champion at such an old age.
@@RedFeng007 Tyson was terrified of Foreman. A focused, in-shape Bowe would be a slight favorite over Foreman. Lennox could go either way, he was susceptible to big punches but had the reach and power to possibly keep a prime Foreman at bay. But Tyson? Hell no
Would suggest anyone who thinks Braddock is a bum to go watch Cinderella man then come back....
Love seeing old footage like this
Thanks for posting this - amazing. Came here from watching "I know why the caged bird sings". They listen to this fight on the radio. But to watch was much better. What a fight. Braddock dropped his guard too much during the whole match.
All tough tough men one governing body one champion the way it should be
hell the man beat all the best he did knock louis down once
Watching cinderalla man story of james j braddock great movie!
This fight took place 2 years after Braddock beat Baer for the title. Helluva layoff for Braddock. Nonetheless, Louis and Braddock were gettin it.
I like how the ref still counted to ten. Take one look at Braddock and you know he's not beating the count.
Braddock wasn't getting up anyways,..but still,....that ref was counting fast !!
coz more 80 match braddock, never lose coz got KO.
Braddock had never been ko'd before, ever, so the ref wanted to give him a chance
The left to the body - not quite sure where it landed - and right to the jaw, was brilliant. The effects of the combination were monumental, as Braddock would attest, later. I believe BOTH punches were instrumental in decking Braddock for his only count-out. Louis himself said ( in his books) he used combinations like this one.
louis was lucky braddock wasn't in his prime anymore, would be great if we could see both in their prime against each other
Braddock was only 32 in this fight, not old at all, what happened to where he wasn't in his prime anymore?
Lord Legender this was his 85th/86th fight I believe. After that many fights his prime was long gone. age doesn't even come into it
Jambear2k9 he showed he still had it with that uppercut counter in the first
Prime Braddock was never good enough to beat Louis. Obvious differences in power, athleticism, and boxing ability.
Louis is easily top 5 fighter of all time. Braddock isn’t in the top 30. The fact that he defended his title for over a decade should tell you he was clearly the superior fighter in or out of his prime.
Trying to knock braddoc down must have been so frustrating
What people do not mention much is that Braddock chose to fight Louis which allowed boxing to be integrated.
Kudos to Louis for doing something that many failed to do, not only beat, but knock out Braddock when Braddock was an underdog.
I have a doc on boxing with German translation and they say Braddock was an easy win.. It didn't look that way to me.
Was reading the Autobiography of Malcolm X and had to come & see this with my own 2 eyes
J J Braddock got 10% of Joe's prize purses for Louis's entire career...Fact...research it.
Why?
Braddock's managers negotiated a great contract...Louis' managers wanted that title shot something bad.
@@DarrenR15 basically extortion. Take it or leave it type deal.

The story!!! Thank you for video
Was very surprised Braddock came out so aggressive. It was a gamble. But in my opinion the best gamble
Braddock was a tough guy. Helluva right by Lewis.
Joe lois el más grande pesado de todos los tiempos y lejos
The great joe louis i can't say Anuff about one of the greatest champion s of all-time
even as good of a fighter that joe louis was, and with all due respect to him, i don't think that he could have beaten a younger jimmy braddock
back when boxing was exiting! this is stuff i'd pay pay for. Boxers these days is as boring as watching a ballerina dance
Joe Louis had a brilliant right hand, I would have joe as the 2nd greatest heavyweight of all time just behind Muhammad ali.
He had KO power in both hands. I'd agree, second only to Ali.
Boxing Fan, that doesnt make sense. what about mike tyson? what about rocky marciano?? what about jack dempsey?
louis said himself that rocky would have beat him in his prime. maybe what you meant to say was "joe louis is the 2nd best heavyweight of all time of fighters with the name 'louis' behind Lennox Lewis"
then i would agree with you.
Ali will be too quick for Joe Louis to catch.
It will be like Tyson Fury against without the 2 knockdowns.
No the best-Maybe Langford was better-maybe
@@wesleyhempoli5548 Louis was being humble, he is three times greater than Marciano, his reign was 12 years long, Rocky's only 4. Louis defeated 30 ranked contenders, Rocky only 11.
Louis is literally three times his superior .
Nobody gonna say Braddock was 75 years old when they fought? 😂
Joe probably didn’t see much more than that, himself. Is why he came out of retirement to fight Rocky. The “Gentleman” had a great jaw !
Cinderelle man
Come back is momen
Cinderella man has become Sleeping beauty....
Joe Lewis in circle the jones brothers ringside like Damn
Una diferencia tecnica abismal. Pero Braccock guapo y digno
Louis was Just to much for his era no doubt
Not at all, Louis was lucky to meet in the ring an Old James braddock.. as same Marciano was lucky to meet in the ring an Old Joe Louis
Miguel Angel Rodriguez Cadena Max Schemling 10 years older beat Joe Louis at 22 in a KO
@@MiguelAngel-su9lf Are you joking? Prime Braddock weighed 180 lbs, 20 lbs less than his did in his fight with Louis. Prime Braddock lost to Ernie Schaaf because he was too light to fight at heavyweight.
Braddock was as taff as granite !
Joe Louis He had heavy hands, an good defense and great precision in his blows, as well as a herculean musculature, very similar to the Mike Tyson looked like in his prime like pugilist. ruclips.net/video/tG2B90evafc/видео.html
Louis hit braddock so hard that part of braddocks mouthpiece went through his teeth and down his throat.
be careful guys, there's a sexually deviant man lurking these comnents saying useless shit. watch out!
Braddock beat Max Bear, Joe Louis beat Braddock, Maciano beat Louis
Timmy Turner whats your point?
who is wesley hemploi? is he a clown like you captain obvious?
Timmy Turner, cool story. i like how your comments never have an insightful purpose and quickly devolve into homosexual ponderings.
When he was OTH-get real

Ya until rocky Marciano knocked his lights out 😂
Yeah 15 years later
That right almost chopped Jim Braddock's head off. They said that Joe Louis knocked his teeth into his gums with that one.
Tyson in his prime would have destroyed both of them in the first round, but I'm sure it's not fair to compare more advance boxing from the future with inferior boxing of decades past. Tyson had much more head and body movement, and much more lethal and quick punching that landed after an opponent missed.
Dude. Do you know how much the sport has evolved. Of course he would have. But tyson didn't have a chin like either of these 2
@@sethmichael8188 Which is why he wouldn't "destroy" either of them
@@Pedro_Le_Chef dude obviously you're a Louis fan. And so am I. I'm a boxing fan. But louis didn't have the quick footwork to keep tyson off. No way. Billy conn was winning on points until he decided to brawl with him.... a light-heavyweight could have beat Louis. Think about that. Shcmeling beat Louis. And max didn't have near the amount of skill tyson had
@@sethmichael8188 Louis had incredibly fast footwork, you misunderstand Louis moving slowly while stalking to him having slow legs. He seems slow because he is always moving forward towards his opponent. Chasing after your opponent is a great way to run into a punch and get knocked out, look at Liston chasing Ali around the ring and running into jabs and crosses like an idiot if you want examples.
When Louis retreated or moved around a target he was very quick, do more research into Louis' fights.
"Billy conn was winning on points until he decided to brawl with him"
.....what the hell does Conn have to do with Tyson? You couldn't pick two fighters with less in common if you tried. Conn being slightly ahead on the cards (one of the three judges had them even) in a competitive match has nothing to do with how Tyson and Louis would fight each other. And by the way, Louis at least knocked Conn out, *Tyson did not knock out James Tillis* which is ten times more embarrassing than knocking out a prime all time great Billy Conn after a competitive fight.
As for Conn being a light heavyweight...so what?
LHW Ezzard Charles became division champ in the early 50s and almost beat Marciano, ex LHW Spinks beat Holmes, ex LHW Tunney beat Dempsey.
When Light Heavys were allowed to compete at heavyweight they did pretty good, not all of them, but Harry Greb, Tommy Loughran, Mickey Walker, Harold Johnson and Archie Moore all did just fine at heavyweight. Conn himself had defeated heavyweight top contenders Bob Pastor and Lee Savold before fighting Louis, he proved he could handled the power of heavyweight opponents.
175 lbs Conn was ten times the fighter James Tillis ever was.
Schmeling is one of the best counter punchers you'll ever see at heavyweight, but again, what the hell does that have to do with Tyson? Completely different styles.
Schmeling fought a highly defensive game and wore Louis down over the course of 12 rounds with dozens of right hands before he took him out.
Tyson did not have Schmeling's patience, he'd be rushing Louis like he did everyone.
You know who beat Tyson though? Buster Douglas, which is laughable. Louis did everything Douglas did and way better. Better jab, better combinations, better stamina, better skills.
Styles? Douglas used a boxer puncher style relying on the jab and uppercut, which is much closer to Louis' style than Tyson's is to Schmeling's.
Tyson gets his head jabbed back and forth like a ping pong from long range and gets hit with sizzling uppercuts and hooks at close range. Louis can back up and put Tyson into his preferred range, Tyson never could back up, never could clinch either. Louis is more versatile and a favorite to win this fight.
The were very weak on defensive technique back then.
So are a lot of fighters today. Then like now you have fighters who are stronger in areas than others. Look at old timers like Benny Leonard in the early 1920'sor Willie Pep in the 1950's. Few fighters today have defensive skills such as these fighters in any era.
Andrew * that's not true at all. Defensive techniques are far superior today. And I hate the current boxers. In fact the superior defensive techniques are part of the reason boxing is so bad today. It's all about getting really big guys to fight boring defensive styles and wait for the opportunity to cash in on their poor attacking options.
I do disagree. What techniques are you speaking of that exist today that fighters such as Benny Leonard, or
Ray Robinson or Will Pep did not use? Bobbing? Weaving? Defensive foot work? Stick and Move? Parring? Rolling with punches? Enlighten us.
Andrew * firstly were talking heavyweights here. Secondly Ray Robinson is a freak of nature. But it's not rocket science to see how far defensive techniques have come. Sure the rules are the same but it is the speed and knowledge used in putting those techniques into practice. Mate you have your opinion and that is fine. But it doesn't take an expert to see how weak the defensive techniques of the older generations of heavyweights were.
I was talking boxing in general. But my comments apply generally to heavyweights as well. Gene Tunney's defense was indeed very good in the 1920's and appears in every since "modern". Jack Dempsey's "bob and weave defensive techniques and shoulder rolls are very modern and his style has indeed been adopted by several modern heavyweights such as the young Mike Tyson and to some extent Joe Frazier. While I'm not a fan Jack Johnson just could not be hit in his prime. His parring skills are perhaps second none of all time. So I do beg to differ. Plenty of modern heavyweights today are very poor in their defensive techniques.
When they realized muscle and body fitness mattered in boxing lmao
How old was Braddock here??
137 years old
32
Cinderela Man
Make no mistake . James Braddock got battered in this bout.
Luke Patrick who would make that mistake?
In order to get this fight Louis had to agree to give Braddock 10% of all his future earnings.
A quick 10 second count _!
Braddock it was clever guy ,to do the fight he put Joe Louis to sign the contract ,that if Louis won, that Braddock take gain a portion from Louis earnings for next 10 years. He did want to go poor again .
Braddock would've beat the shit out of Louis in his prime....
Braddock was an inspired fighter but even in his prime Louis would have been too fast and too strong.
nah way man. I think the fight would have been closer, but Louis in his prime beats Braddock in his prime
Yeah, THIS louis, put not prime louis. Aka the louis that fought schmeling in their rematch
Simply not the case. This was hardly Louis in his Prime and he was the quicker and more powerful fighter on this day and most certainly all the earlier ones...Braddock was a good fighter who took his job seriously, gave an honest effort and beat some good fighters as a result...but he was simply not of the caliber of Joe Louis.
Oh really!!!!????
Sorry But I think I prime Ali, Tyson, Holmes and Marciano ALL beat Joe in his prime and I might even add Foreman
Tyson would get his clock cleaned by every one you list...His had some skills early on, but basically mentally defeated his opponents before the opening bell. Any fighter who failed to be intimidated gave him more a good fight and the same that beat him. And none of those Champs you list were ever intimidated for one minute by anyone.
I listed those guys vs louis not tyson. Ali to fast for joe and marciano foreman and tyson all had to much power for a guy who was rocked by billy conn and max schnelling
Louis would KO Tyson and stop Marciano. Tyson had a weak chin and no heart. Marciano had a bad tendency to cut and probably wouldn't make it to 15 rounds. Holmes is the only one who has a real shot to win. He could outpoint Louis but it would be close. I think Joe would win in a very late round KO. Louis came back to beat both fighters. Schmeling in the rematch. Tyson couldn't take a punch from BUSTER DOUGLAS! No way he could stand up to the brown bomber.
you obviously don’t know boxing at all
Dreamer
Wow, one title defense and he loses. what a bum
bum???? do u know what this guy had been trough??? dumbass reply dude
Well Max Baar underestimated him and didn't even train. He beat himself
Maybe bum is a bed term but the fact that he never successfully defended his title makes him seem like less of a champion. More of a guy who just had a lucky night
It's all irrelevant. This sport is dead. Hasn't been watchable in 10-15 years. It's a shame
Jason walbridge No. He just ran into Joe Louis and was out of his prime. That simple. Braddock was far from a bum or lucky. He was one do ten toughest sobs to fight and in his prime a dam good fighter. The guy fought injured so many times. Like seriously injured.
