I first became musically aware as a four year old sitting with my mom in a dark movie palace.
My mother was obsessed with scary movies and couldn't get a baby sitter.
What was this movie so frightening - I wondered - and why?
I saw a little girl put her finger in her ears at an especially tense moment and --suddenly - I had my answer.
It was Dimitri Tiomkin's music stirring robust emotions!
From that moment forward I felt I was in on a big secret. I began paying especial attention to film music and
took note of the composer credit. That particular film which started my lifelong passion for the evocative frisson of thrills and tears was The Thing from Another World.
I spent my life (I am now seventy-two) collecting Tiomkin music (along with a host of others, of course.)
I say all that to say this:
Thank you for posting something I had not known existed as a recording. This was a most pleasant surprise.
Tiomkin is a Golden Age of Hollywood master of the medium. The recording industry was in its infancy through much of his career. Fortunately, he kept acetate copies on disc of some of his great efforts from which re-recordings have been done.
His legacy is most unique and his passionate romanticism continues to live on in hearts and minds as long as motion pictures attract audiences interested in classics.

I love this musical score! I have the first 20 minutes on film, with the original variable density optical soundstrack, so have this music with the visuals

@@youtubenews2771 Other than the poem recited by Tweedly Dee and Tweedly Dum, I recall no songs in the 1933 film. I just love the orchestra and how the Paramount orchestra sounded in the early 1930s films. I do have a1932 Paramount musical with Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald with many songs including MIMI.

Not only was Dmitri Tiomkin a musical genius, he'll live in immortality as Frank Capra's bosom buddy in the director's colorful autobiography. "Fronk, bub...you need beeg drink!!"

The Rudolph Kopp Music Appreciation Group supports RUclips uploads featuring historical recordings. This is one of them. Nathanial W Finston was a superb conductor. The correct name of the group is the Paramount Recording Orchestra. Maestro Finston conducted Rudolph G Kopp's score for "The Sign of the Cross" in 1932.

The Paramount orchestra had a distinct sound that no other studio orchestra had at the time. Warners was good, but their sound was a bit different than that at Paramount, so if you know films of the 1930s the sound of the music will identify the particular studio that it came from.

Sorry, Constantin Bakaleinikoff conducted Kopp's score for "The Sign of the Cross". Finston was listed as Music Director.

@@mitchdakelman4470 I believe that is a generalisation on your part, as the sound would also be determined by the size of the orchestra as well as the microphone placement.

The film was interesting- but it was an odd mix of Lewis Carroll and a "Paramount musical".
