    On the Oculus, the lens distance knob is not clunky at all! You have to push the knob and then you can move it nicely. It took me a couple of weeks to find out.

      If the screens are inches from eyes, do nearsighted ppl need to wear glasses?

    • @hizokuto
      @hizokuto 6 лет назад +3

      @@grsshppr7659 I had that misconception until I tried it. The depth of field is like real life. Its like the lenses allow you focus to infinity and relax. I tried an oculus rift and without my glasses I had to bring a piece of paper in game an inch up to my eye and squint to be able to read it while everything far was blurred. Each eye gets a separate image. Basically, you don't feel like your focusing on a screen, so you don't get fatigued from getting cross eyed or focusing close (VR isn't like holding a screen up to your nose). You can also adjust the spacing between lenses, so you don't get too much of a binocular effect. If you can find a way to demo any of them at like Best Buy, then do it.

    Great comparison. After trying out both before the purchase I went with Oculus and so far I've been very pleased with it. The touch controllers are just amazing, so intuitive. Also, I do wear glasses and didn't have any issues with the Oculus headset. No rubbing or anything between my glasses and the Oculus lenses. It's very comfortable. I guess if you have a huge head plus large glasses frame you will have a problem with wearing Oculus. I play mainly driving/flying sims so tracking with the 2 sensors was never an issue either. Even tho in my case it was never about the cost, I did like the fact that the Oculus was a bargain compared to the cost of the Vive. And buying both would have been kind of overkill. Really don't need 2 VR headsets.
    Having said that I personally am still not very satisfied with the resolution and picture quality on both headsets. Since it's just first gen I guess it's ok but not good enough yet imho. We need a lot denser/higher resolutions. So we still need to wait another few years to get there where I would like the picture quality and sharpness to be. Cheers from Germany :)

    • @Thac0Gamers
      @Thac0Gamers  6 лет назад +5

      That's good to know. My daughter has pretty thick glasses and they can come in contact with the lenses, especially if she tries to adjust her headset while gaming. I agree about the resolution, it could be better but it hasn't stopped me from enjoying my VR headsets. My favorite so far has been Elite: Dangerous. In VR you really feel like Han Solo. Pretty badass!!! :)

      Yes the lenses are very close to the eyes, but they are adjusted for that matter. If you were to look into a VR headset like the Oculus Rift from far away when it is not on your head, the screen would look incredibly blurry.

    I can see why Oculus keep their first party games exclusive, they are paying for games to get made, which this early in the VR life cycle is a must as they can't rely on third parities to bring the games to entice the customers, they in turn won't make the games unless there are enough customers, and to be honest, the quality shows on their exclusives.

    Really interesting viewpoints, when I used to set up the Oculus Rifts in my electronics program they were a pain in the ass in terms of the program freezing up, the headset not responding and the cord getting loose and having to shimmy it back into the headset to get it working again. I'm thinking about getting one before the year ends and I'm probably going to have to go with Vive not just from my bad experience from Oculus but because of your very informative video.

      Let me know what you think of the 2 in comparison, I'm curious. Also, don't feel bad... I had to learn from the comment section of THIS VIDEO that the lens adjustment in the Rift isn't clunky. You have to push the knob in and then move it. I had no idea!!!

    • @notbuster126
      @notbuster126 6 лет назад +3

      ok here goes, have been using the rift for a couple days now with many titles, so I have a good feel for it now. I'll list the positives that stand out to me first. The simplicity of the system, it's basically unpack, plug in and go. There's not much too it, its actually portable if desired. I like that it actually has a eye calibration sweet spot setup. That was cool, vive does not have that. The lenses themselves, I felt like I got less screen door effect somehow on the rift but be it at lower resolution.
      The sensor that turns it on/off when you put on the rift or take it off is a nice touch, no need to press a button!
      Some not cool things, the lenses I think cause a sort of distortion like when you are trying to look at a panoramic photo and get that strange effect as it's trying to make it all work. The vive for sure has none of that. I actually prefer the vive head strap system, I have the upgraded headset strap so it's even better than the rifts standard one. I get a feel as if the rift is like 90% VR.. like it's not fully immersive as the vive. The vive is 100% there, you are there and can jump and stand, lay down, turn around all over, walk etc. The rift is like an intro to VR, while the Vive is FULL VR. I understand you can get the 3rd sensor but even then something just feels limiting.
      The reason I got the rift was to check it out for myself and not be a "fanboy" of either and also for the game exclusives. I didn't feel like "hacking" the vive to work with rift stuff. Overall rift is pretty cool, but I still give the win to Vive. It feels more polished but be it longer to set up.
      A comparison people might not agree with. Rift is Iphone, Vive is Android lol

    I gotta disagree about room space vive is for smaller rooms and oculus is for bigger, when I owned an oculus I just hated how my hand would fly to the other side of a map, I can lay down and easily play on my vive with no glitching all in 360 I used my oculus sensor stands for my vive lighthouses and positioned them in certain areas, vive is a good pick if you want a true VR experience

      You must have failed with your placement of the Oculus sensors. I have three, two in the front and one behind, and the only tracking problem I get is when I am laying down on the floor too close to my desk. Thac0 Gamers That’s true... My glasses are fairly small. However, when my HDMI wasn’t working on my Rift (nearly crapped myself) I discovered the part that resets on your face is detachable, and I assume that someone secondary company makes those parts but for people with glasses. This seems to be highly dependent on the personal experience - steamvr never crashed on me, while the oculus was a nightmare to set up, not recognizing usbports as 3.0, not seeing controllers are common problem. The vive was batteries included plug and play, the oculus was extension cords, usb troubles and error codes. Highly recommend the vive but that may also be as personal as with this guy here and the oculus is likely also personal.

I was able to play all day in much greater comfort after getting these inserts. They make a world of difference in my humble opinion. On a side note, they are PLASTIC FRAMES so you will need to be careful with them. Also when I ordered them initially I used a written prescription that I had gotten from Costco a few years ago.

    So im considering getting an oculus for christmas and have been watching a few videos just to be sure itll be all smooth sailing setting it up and that its worth the cost and if i wasnt already sold, this video did it for me. Ive used both for short periods of time in the past, and used the psvr for several hours for RE VII but i found both the vive and the psvr too heavy. The oculus just felt super light and comfortable. The screen wasnt as perfect as the vive but honestly id prefer comfort over perfect visuals as the vive would slide down my face and make things blurry anywaya

      I can't speak for the Vive, but I did recently pick up the Oculus this black Friday, and it's an awesome VR experience. I do find that there is quite a bit of blurriness on the Oculus, but the games and controllers are what makes it a forgivable win.

      Masumi-Chan right now for me a standard Oculus set is £399 while the standard vive set is £499. So £100 extra isn't a lot of a difference anymore. I'm not sure which I prefer but I'm gravitating to the vive. I've not tested an Oculus before though and had 5 minutes in a vive. Vive pro is stupidly expensive. Not worth it.
      I think I would prefer the htc controllers mainly fir the trigger button and larger shape. It is great for gun play. Also I get motion sick easily and tired and hot quick so I'm not sure which would be better but I presume the better tracking in the vive would help with dizziness and sickness.
      Although I don't have much room. Barely enough to go a little more than the still mode.

    • @berryvr7184
      @berryvr7184 6 лет назад

      besides the controllers for the Oculus i would prefer having a vive. i mainly play vrchat so the oculus controllers for hand gestures makes life easier. also anolog sticks for walking around and turning i prefer. though i have sean 3rd party controllers which work with vive that look allot better than both.

    Owned the Rift for over a yr now and it's still going strong, I'm still in love with it. The controllers are fantastic and though they weren't initially the thing that specifically attracted me to the Rift (having never previous tried them), once you do use them it's difficult to imagine ever using anything else. They're damn close to being genuinely perfect - sturdy too.
    As for software; though there obviously isn't the extensive library of games available with traditional monitor gaming, there's still a good amount of choice now in 2018 (actual games) that extends well beyond tech demos. There's also Vorpx. Admittedly Vorpx can vary widely in quality, but when you get a good one it really is memorable and can make a normal game feel utterly different. For example Alien Isolation in Vorpx is stunning, I don't think I could even go back to a monitor with that game. Update: As good as AI in Vorpx is, I have to say the MotherVR mod for AI is infinitely better imo. Lastly, for those who've just picked up VR, be sure to also download Google Earth - it's free and again utterly amazing.
    Downers: For me the lenses on the Rift require a lot of care and I really don't like the idea that once they're damaged you're essentially screwed. There's no option to even send away and replace. No, if they get significantly damaged, you're fu@ked. Considering how many people in a household, not to mention other friends and relatives, want to try VR - taking the headset on and off etc - that's a significant problem imo. Iv'e managed to keep mine in good shape thankfully, but they are soft and it's always been a concern having to monitor other people.

    • @Thac0Gamers
      @Thac0Gamers  6 лет назад +2

      if you go right from one to the other, you can notice it at first, but you forget about it after a minute or two. If you played one, waited a week, then played the other, i doubt you'd notice the Vive's superior FOV. It is better... but not by *that* much!

    Thank you for this great comparison video. Few videos or even articles have been updated since prices drop, and it's good to have a COMPLETE review and comparison of each one in 2018. I think this video would still be relevant for one or two years, because even with the new coming GPU gen, we won't be able to run games on 2*4k screen at 90fps... or it would be a combined PC at 3000-5000$. So presents versions of the rift and the vive (the pro version is juste too expensive for a normal person) have still some times before being replaced.

      There are several games that use a standard Xbox style controller. If you can use games that would use a regular controller then you would absolutely be able to play these games. The ones that require the touch controllers for moving around I don't know because my brain can't wrap my head around how to articulate that with other types of controls. Likely there is some kind of adapter or something out there for that but I wouldn't be able to say for sure. But certain games that require a controller such as Chronos, Elite dangerous, witchblood, Lucky's Tale, and I think you might even be able to use a controller with Skyrim. So there are options and you can enjoy the VR. I just can't say for sure what percentage of games you would be able to use easily. Hope that helps...

    I own both headsets I'd really recommend you look at the deluxe audio strap for the Vive it really brings it up the oculus's comfort and in my opinion surpasses it, as for the Rift i find it has harsher godrays, fishbowl warping/distortion, poor stereo overlap resulting in less 3d depth, boxy FOV which lacks mainly Vertical and some Horizontal FOV and a dim washed out screen which has awful black levels...
    on the controllers, The touch controllers feel nice and offer better hand presence but the hand pose is almost identical on both rift and vive, IMO its more about where the hand is modeled in game. I can see where sticks have an advantage but also feel old fashioned and out of place in VR, touch pads are far more versatile and current, also the trigger feels cheap compared to Vive and is not two stage, the handle part is too small so tool/gun presence is inferior also the haptic feedback is really weak also I found close interaction occlusion to be worse, So to say touch controllers are flat out better is wrong they both have their strong points IMO.

    • @Thac0Gamers
      @Thac0Gamers  6 лет назад +7

      I agree with the comments about the headsets, but disagree about the controllers. The touchpads are okay for menus (haptics are nice too), but for locomotion they are inferior to the thumbsticks. And the grip buttons on the vive controllers are just awkward. I'm okay with them but I always have to show people playing "no, you reload here.... use your middle or ring finger.... no..... the button is here on the other side of the controller." Also, the touch controllers can double very nicely as an actual controller for 3rd person games.

      Ergonomics, weight, sticks, triggers. IDK wth are u talking about, Oculus owns.
      And Oculus Touch is two generations ahead of Vive due to touch sensor, but it needs app support to shine.

      Cmdr Paine-VR Bro, the touch controllers are way better because you can actually use your fingers unlike the Vive where it's just a simple "grab" button with a cheap and dated animation. It should be obvious, the Vive is dated technology when it comes to its controllers and it's widely known. You sound like your defending the Vive because you're a fan of the Vive and being a bit biased. The Oculus has better and more advanced controller technology so how can it be worse? That makes no sense.

      Thac0 Gamers I think it depends if you come from a gamepad-playing background. I've always hated thumbsticks for FPS games, never bought a XB or PS console because of it. The trackpad on the other hand has no annoying spring resistance and is effortless to glide a finger on it. I use it very successfully for locomotion, it feels natural to me. Want to stop? Lift your finger.

    Fallout 4 works good with the Oculus now BTW. They updated it with full support, although steam doesn't tell you that (still says HTC on the steam page for it only). Oculus controllers native in game now and everything. Been playing it with the Oculus no issue as if the game was meant to be played with it.

    I will have to try this myself, I was about to get a vive until I went to a Microsoft store and they had vive and oculus there and I tried oculus first then was going to put vive on and after all the hype it was getting and everyone was saying it was way better than oculus I was excited but when I put it on it was not as good everyone said it was the resolution and pixels seen where very bad I felt like I was using the ps4 vr or the dk2 and the field of view wasn't as good either I guess since the brand names or for most people it was the only one they have had or tried it was getting good things about it, I'm hoping when I try this that it will be better than oculus than I would get one. Also Vive Really needs to lower there price on there headset really what your buying it for is for the name its not better in graphics or resolution, I would say there tracking is better by far but if this vive pro is the same or even better than oculus then I wouldn't mind it being $600.

      Question Studios Please learn to use and apply something called grammar.
      The HTC Vive that you tried was clearly not in the correct position.
      The one thing that everyone knows is the HTC Vive looks better.
      It may not have AS good controllers (I like the touch pass on the Vive more, but that's your opinion) but it's widely known the Vive is better graphics wise.

      Im about to buy my first VR Headset, ive watched quite alot Reviews and Videos about both Systems and you are the first who say vive has better Graphics. So far everbody told me Rift got slithly clearer Grahpics since both have same Resolustion but the slightly bigger FOV on the Vive makes the graphics little Worse. Have not tested myself but it makes Sense

      Jan Wurst don’t know if you’ve bought it yet, but what i would do is go to something called a vr arcade. look it up. the one near me uses vives and they are amazing. what you should do is go to one that has vives and to ones that have oculus rifts. then you can decide

      Skyrim VR is on PSVR exclusively ATM. Fallout 4 is on Vive exclusively. Bethesda has hinted that the 2 will move to the other platform at a later date. Don't expect either to end up on Oculus though, because Bethesda hates Zuckerburg.

      As Long as we can play it on another solution, it`s at least ok. I find exclusivity between Occulus and Vive so stupid... The only real difference between them are the controllers.

    Still in the middle of the video but thanks for indicating the better FOV in Vive, because even though technical specs on paper indicate both headsets have the same FOV, I read the Vive has more FOV. Vive was my first ever VR experience in my life last week and I am already hooked, and I don't recall noticing the edge of the screen at all while I was using it.
    Nice video by the way. I like your comparison

    • @Thac0Gamers
      @Thac0Gamers  6 лет назад

      Oculus is slightly noticeable when you start a game... but after you're in, the FOV loss isn't a factor... for me at least.

      I purchased the Oculus Rift this week and was disappointed by the black edges of the screen. It's worse than I thought and I'm finding it hard to get used to. Feels like looking through a binocular. I will most probably return it and go for the Vive, although I will really miss the touch controllers and easy setup.

    • @Thac0Gamers
      @Thac0Gamers  6 лет назад

      Sorry to hear that. The Vive is noticeably better. I guess I'm grateful that I can distract myself from the more limited FOV.

      JSPR shots depends on their prescription. Some people are crazy near sighted or they're far sighted, so they still need to wear glasses for VR. I have a PSVR and I'm near sighted, but everything is blurry without my glasses.

    Nice comparison. More nuanced than most, so well done. Something I don't hear reviewers talk about is the difference in the lenses which in my opinion was the biggest factor for what I chose. I initially bought both last November and amazon has a 2 month return policy during holiday season, So I played with both quite a bit. I even set up two computers and was able to run both simultaneously in the same room, and running same game, Space Pirate Trainer. Being able to jump back and forth between them made the visual differences much more apparent. The Vive screen is much brighter, has more contrast, and at its sharpest is much clearer. However the lens in the Vive has a smaller "sweet spot" that is basically the very center, but about 30 degrees off center in any direction and things start to blur pretty drastically. It's super obvious with text. A lot of vive owners say "just train yourself to look around with your head, not with your eyes!" but I think that's a serious limitation. But yes, dead center and about 30 degrees out, it's quite a bit sharper.
    Oculus Rift is not as bright, less vibrant colors, lower contrast, more god rays in dark scenes, and just a bit softer overall. However the difference between looking straight forward at the sharpest spot, and looking off center of your head position, is much less drastic. Things soften like they do on the vive, but text remains legible almost to the very edge of the FOV. I would also say that with the relatively low resolutions of the current gen HMD's, that the softer visuals of the rift make for a more believable experience, and I found it much more immersive, where on the vive, the sharpness of dead center, brighter screens, and higher contrast made the edges of the screen much more apparent, and it felt more like goggle vision, because it was super bright screen, immediately cut off on the sides by the black plastic of the headset. I agree that Touch controllers are far superior for immersive, intuitive experiences, but I will also say that I did notice certain games felt more responsive with the vive controllers. That's likely due to the vive tracking latency being a bit faster and a bit more precise. Oculus sensors require much more bandwidth seeing as their cameras are all sending data, whereas the vive headset is actually what sends tracking data, and the base stations are passive. Gorn was one game that felt better on the vive, but not enough to compete with all the things I prefer about the Rift. Sorry this comment got out of hand. Ha!
