Another swing and a miss from HTC. Unfortunately I can't even say it's disappointing, because this is exactly what I've come to expect from them - An over priced piece of junk fraught with problems, fatal flaws, and bizarre design decisions.
Finally an honest review that isn't some form of advertisement. It's really disappointing, honestly idk why they are bothering with standalone. They could have just stuck to pcvr, cabled, lighthouse tracked and I think it would have been an ok upgrade for something like an index (for social vr), instead of this half baked standalone that doesn't really seem to be doing anything right. From what iv heard though the developers are working hard on fixing the software so there is that... but as you say the value for money just isn't there.
One important point to keep in mind is: even though it's being marketed as being usable for PC VR gaming and social experiences, the product seems to follow HTC Vive's current philosophy, which is to make it a professional device first and foremost, much like the Vive Focus 3. They stopped trying to compete with gaming VR headsets because a huge majority believe Quest 3 is the go to one-size-fits-all (there is no such thing as one-size-fits-all).

Comparing the Focus Vision to the Quest 3S isn't really reasonable. The Quest 3S also has fresnel lenses, so it's not better in that category, it has less IPD range, no eye tracking, less pixel density, a smaller FOV, no audio jack, less system RAM, and no MicroSD slot. Problem is VR is a niche market and the headsets are expensive to make, but nowadays people don't realise that. Because of the Quest 3, many seem to have become self-entitled. Sure, there are overpriced things out there, but it's unrealistic to expect every VR headsets to be $500. The other day I saw someone saying an 8K OLED headset isn't worth more than that simply because it was wired and works on base station. It's akin to saying an Omega watch isn't worth more than $250 because it lacks all the features you find on an Apple watch.
It's an incredible missed opportunity to have the only hi res standalone with displayport but they reused controllers and displays for some reason. Yeah, saying that the Focus Vision should have the same price as the budget model Quest 3S (eye tracking alone is a $200 upgrade to the Focus 3) is just straight up dishonest. I definitely will not be consulting his views in the future.
There's a guy who said his Quest 3 got bricked remotely by Meta because he refused to give his date of birth. He's been an Oculus user for 10 years and it's a first for him.

You can always count on HTC to fail. I say that as a super-fan of their earlier phones. What most people don't know is that Google purchased the almost all of HTCs R&D and engineering staff for 1.8 BILLION dollars back in 2017. HTC was already in decline but after the sale they bled sales and were in the red for years. It's a shell of what they once were and they just don't have the resources, talent, or ability to compete. The only legit reason to choose HTC VR kit in 2024 is they seem to have decent body tracking accessories. They might be more compatible with Linux too, but I'm not sure.
Yeah, look as somebody who went HTC instead of Samsung until that just wasn't an option anymore, it's sad to see them not succeed. They could have been a really serious contender to Meta, but without their R&D department or the ability to burn billions of dollars in research on a whim it does make it difficult.
That was a great and thorough review of the HTC Vive Focus Vision. I just watched and knew that I am so happy with my Meta Quest 3 and how much less I paid for it. The pancake lenses alone make the Quest 3 better. I really appreciate the time you took to review this headset, Thomas. Take care 😊.
This is so disappointing to hear because I just ordered one but now I might consider returning. The issues of lagging in performance and simple things that he mentioned should have been fixed or smooth. I dont want to have to wait for months for software updates that may or may not fix issues.
There is still not a better headset with combination of better screen / colors than the Quest Pro. Have had the HPRev, Samsung Odyssey. Also, have the Apple VP and the Valve. When are we getting something better for PC ? If only Apple were to have Steam Link and Controllers... or Valve... please release something.
39:34 Are you sure that's what they marketed? In the official videos, they said the infrared is for better tracking only when you are in VR and in dark rooms, because the other standalone headsets tracking don't work in the dark or something.
I agreed with everything you said. i bough it with the mouth tracking and wired. now it back in the box because i am returning it. i want it for VRChat but it doesn't work good with the HTC trackers 3.0 and the face and mouth tracking is horrible. the big battery in the back doesn't allow me to rest my head in my chair because is so chucky, you cant used the headset with out the battery and it is heavy.
I always use PCVR with my Reverb G2 (V2). Sometimes I use my 8kX but I generally prefer better clarity and comfort of G2 and don't really miss the FOV that much. I may like this for Displayport PCVR but I want the comfort of the G2. For that price I think I would like the Pimax Crystal Light instead. Maybe if this had a great vertical FOV and no god rays I would consider it, but lenses are just not good enough.
I'm a quest pro/ quest 3 user and I was really excited to try this headset with direct display port connectivity. The lenses are so horrible. I used this all night in vrchat. The mic and sound were amazing. The screens ok. The lenses should have been burried in 2021, because the experience with these lenses is so bad this headset is a no go. It's really that bad. When I went back to my quest pro it was night and day, and I was using the pro over virtual desktop. Even with the occasional compression and artifacts, it was still a much better experience than the vive focus vision, and that makes me really sad. I'm so ready for an upgraded premium headset to replace my pro. But my pro is still so far ahead of this thing.
I am happy with Quest 3 and Pimax crystal light. My las experience with XR elite was not good. This seems in the same line..Overpriced and unreliable. I lost my patience with HTC. Better buy eslsewhere.
Not gonna lie, I actually like the specs of this headset. I don't mind Fresnel lenses and it's packing so many good features I'm almost tempted to purchase it. Alas, it's not OLED, it's just the same panels and lenses as the Vive Pro 2, so I'm going to stick to the Vive Pro and the Bigscreen Beyond. I'm fine with wired experience with base station.
Why are they messing up so bad. They have so many points of reference from other headsets. And they make this? Pros -good catalog of games. Cons -uncofortable. -bad display. -weird feild of view. -bad tracking. -bad performance. -cheap feeling controllers.
I really hate to see HTC fail on so many levels, I can live with many of the shortcomings as long as I have the essentials (good tracking/ controllers, good visuals, and good PCVR support) but if they can't get that right I just can't expect to be satisfied long term, even if they do release something that actually sound great on paper and through early reviews. And that's not even taking price into account, I'd pay quite a bit if I think it's worth it... It's a shame cause HTC is one of the few companies I feel could release something big for PCVR or truly compete with the Q3.
Super off topic but I am using your channel to learn some German um ok so I listened to some German music and it is similar to Mexican folk music 😂 listen to Goldried Quintet and then listen to banda MS el 24 😅 the similarities are crazy and I did not know that German Polka Folk Music and Mexican Folk Music have a history together
Such a shame this headset is falling short on all fronts. It’s genuinely startling that it’s this poor. I’ll be looking to replace my G2 soon, and was wondering if this hmd would be viable. Clearly not.
Same. This could have been the ideal headset for VRChat thanks to eye and face tracking. But fresnel lenses with godrays are a dealbreaker for me in 2024.
So, basically a useless upgrade for my QPro/rtx4090/z790mb with official link cable, usb3.2 gen2 type-c port at 650mbps encoding bitrate. I've tried this headset and returned it for a refund. Pity it didn't have pancake lens, Qlled screens, and a better vertical FOV imho.
A shame with HTC, nothing new here to look at, they just upgrade like a phone or NBA 2k or a Call of duty game, just a waste and their pricing is ridiculous
They stopped caring about consumer market because they can't compete with Quest 3 being sold at such a cheap price. Instead, their headsets are more intended for business usage (even if this was made in a way it could also work for playing games).
It's weird because i don't have those problems with the XR Elite. I don't use pass-through or MR. Never crashed either. Kinda odd that it seems worse. Those are the same controllers, it looks like, as the last 2 headsets that they put out. I never had a battery problem either. I'd still try it just to see for myself.
Pay close attention to Thomas face shape and how recessed his eyes are in his head, this is why he always gets poor FOV numbers, his eyes are far from the lenses just due to his head shape. He does state, FOV is dependent on a person's head shape. In many respects, I feel bad for Thomas, he's a VR enthusiast with a non VR friendly head shape. The closer your eyes are to the lenses, the better the FOV will be.
Yes unfortunately I always have those problems with all headsets, I can't change it guys, so sorry. However I can at least measure and compare it with my other values, this is why I always show my values of the other headsets .

I had a Google HTC Vive Cosmos, they stopped working after about 200 hours of occasionally operation from 3 years. I got an error: "200: hmd not found" - after that they wouldn't turn on. And it's not a software problem. it's not a cable either because I handled it with care, and even if so, why does the cable wear out after 200 hours of use? I don't recommend this company, I see that the next products are another waste that work until the warranty period. Chinese crap ! I never buy any Htc vive. I probably choose Oculus.
Oculus can brick your headset remotely. A guy's Quest 3 stopped working when he refused to specify his date of birth when asked. He's been with Oculus/Quest headsets for the past 10 years and never had to give it... until now.

No OLED and no pancake is a deal breaker for me if I am spending a grand.
A shame with HTC, nothing new here to look at, they just upgrade like a phone or NBA 2k or a Call of duty game, just a waste and their pricing is ridiculous
take a shot every time he says "ja"

Just don't understand why HTC is afraid of success. Seems like they are just modifying old stock based on manufacturing ties.
Bro give me one vr headset pls you have alot
your eyes must be messed up or something because i do not how you got those fov's on any of those vr head sets bruh
@@voodoodevr-en i was not in the bad mood when righting this comment i apologize. Looking at it now i should have worded it differently. Sorry i dont see eye to eye with your reviews on vr head sets and sorry i was kinda mean i have some problems i got to work out with my self. Good luck with your reviews and continue what your doing
Htc is the worst vr company in the industry
this is basically the quest 3s and quest pro combined
Sorry, no where close to the QPro imho.
Is HTC Vive Marketing Managers are bots?? Why make this fresnel lens sh*t in 2024??
He's been with Oculus/Quest headsets for the past 10 years and never had to give it... until now.
DAMMN!! You're def being wayyy too critical, so what you have 100000 hands, you're the only reviewer who was negative even in your pros. Does HTC owe you money or something 🤣🤣😂
It's the truth... German Style, we are brutal and honest 🤣
If you pay $1000+ for something, you have every right to be that critical. There's no reason it should have all the problems it does at this price
@@voodoodevr-en Comparing the Focus Vision to the Quest 3S and saying the 3S "outperforms it in every way" is anything but honest.
It's a horrible headset
Dude your head is weird and your eyes are deep inside your head 😮
His head is perfectly normal, and so are his eyes. Stop being a creep.
