Are they rich/poor? I mean, Angelo is apparently the most skilled pickpocket in the world, surely he has to be quite rich? Yet it seems as if many of them wants to quit as soon as they have enough money.
KingThiazzi Now that’s a good question. Very few pickpockets anywhere are wealthy. Some, in their prime make a lot of money, around US$150,000-200,000 a year but nearly always piss it away, or have a habit. Unless you know what to do with “the spread” you won’t be able to max out the cards, and it’s getting harder by the day with new security features on cards. Some European pickpockets, and Angelo is not one of them, target wealthy people and make more. They are the exception. Napoli is not exactly a center of wealthy tourists or locals using public transportation. Yes, Angelo has superb technique (and "chops") but he has a poor pool of victims, and no way of working outside his domain (for many reasons, and that's a different post). He is stuck!
A word on our sweaty shirts seems to be in order, since many of you comment on this. Hey-this was a documentary! As in, reality! It was 90-some degrees during the shooting and often nerve-wracking. Hey-we were among criminals! Wearing hidden cameras! Our shirts were wired up with button cameras and microphones, so we couldn’t change them often, even though we had two identical shirts apiece. We also used a mix of POV cameras, like the very first GoPro, which were hidden in purses, guidebooks, and other things you might see us carry in the film. We also used eyeglass cameras and iPhone video. Our crew used two larger camera: a Red, and the old Canon 5D. Sometimes you can see a flash of these in the film. BTW, these very experienced thieves did not learn any new tricks at our dinner that would further their trade. What they know today they have learned over decades of daily practice. There’s nothing a stage pickpocket from Las Vegas could offer them. This film actually makes the pickpockets’ work more difficult. Take yourself (and the millions of other viewers). You watched the whole documentary, right? Now you know how pickpockets work. Think they can pull their tricks on you? I bet not!
John Estrella Jr. Yep amazing stuff. Its nearly an hour long but I've watched it at least three times... Maybe it helps that I love Italy as a country and the subject of this documentary was very fascinating as well. And the pickpockets actually seemed very likeable guys even though they're "real criminals".
This really is beautiful. It's the truest expression of cultural exchange. Two entirely different types of people, brought together by their love and proficiency at a rare and transgressive skill, laughing and sharing and exchanging techniques. Of course pickpockets in Naples were going to get better after this. It was inevitable. It was also inevitable that Bob was going to get better. He's taking some of what he learned and applying it on the stage. They are taking some of what they learned and applying it on the street. That's fair. The most beautiful moment was actually where for a brief time Bob got to feel the fear of doing this "for real," and the "real" got to feel a bit of what Bob does- stealing for an audience, showing off your skills, and getting to do it without shame, or risk of jail. That was a true cultural exchange. And if a few more people in Naples get their wallets or Gucci belts snatched, that's evolution.
@Manic mcgee that is a beautiful comment, it truly is, and I am so glad that someone else saw it that way. I thought I was wrong somehow to see it that way, but you said it perfectly. It warmed my heart to see this happening. The respect and love they had for each other was wonderful. Oceans apart, different languages, different lives, yet they came together in true camaraderie. I salute you !
***** I wish I wasn't so dyslexic. I mean really I meant the same thing but look at how simple I said it... yours perfectly. I honestly couldnt put it in my own words like that.
The guy that Bob finally met, was probably the best pickpocket alive today; and he knows it and takes pride in his craft. Even Bob said, he never felt a thing when the guy first took his poke. The guy has the smoothest hands for a cannon. Bob shouldn't feel ashamed at not wanting to go through with dipping into somebody's kick. That is a normal and honest feeling that most people share. These guys are street guys that have been doing this racket for years as a means for survival in a very hard world. What struck me is the revelation of Bob finally meeting the master of his trade and Bob's admiration of his very skilled, acquired vocation. Bob does this as a form of entertainment. These guys are practitioners of their trade, real-life criminals. It's like what the master dipper said toward the end of the documentary. "Bob, in your show in Las Vegas, you make the people laugh, whereas I make them cry." How very profound!
This master pickpocket is the quality Roald Dahl meant, when he wrote the short story The Hitch-hiker. That genius pickpocket stole the notebook of the police officer, who had written down name, addrress, car model, license plate, speed when speeding, where that happened. Like it never happened. Problem solved. ruclips.net/video/U9pIDfAYYxM/видео.html
Funny thing is, I watched this documentary a couple of years ago, then traveled to Netherlands and still got pick pocketed within 48 hours of being there. First time it has ever happened and hopefully the last (it was a good learning experience)... My advice is never let your guard down for one moment.
It goes on in the crowds the entire Olympic Games, Then at the end is when they announce it to everyone and count which team took the most cash/valuables
It's amazing how companies, banks and governments all employ the same tactics as pickpockets. Only difference is they tell you they do it, in a long winded document called "terms and conditions", nobody has the patience to read.
Difference between Bob, and the thieves is, is that Bob does it for fun, they did it to feed themselves once upon a time. When it comes to survival you'd be surprised the tricks you'd learn. Great Documentary!!!
That dinner table scene was really something special. Having two sides of the same coin, despite their line of work, sit down and just enjoy a meal together is a rare and enviable feat. Despite the fact that they steal from others, that they express remorse towards doing so only educates people in that life is not always as black and white as most moral and legal authorities would have you believe. That despite a person's tough exterior, they have a heart beating in their chest just like us and that we all share more than we realize.
The pickpockets were just stealing wallets, now they are being taught by the best how to steal watch worth $10k-100k. Wow talk about on the job training.
@@theekiddunknown6069 you're merely thinking of the difference between a leather strap and a metal strap. A metal strap almost always needs to be slipped off (which can also be easily taken) but a leather strap usually has a buckle on it. Even a patek philippe (well over 100k) can have a buckle.

I hope he returns to visit them, perhaps every year if he can afford it, because he's a senior, and those times he shared with the men were priceless jewels for all!
To those who suggest avoiding Italy: Yes, Italy, be it Florence, Rome, or Naples, has lots of pickpocketing. Other large metropolitan European cities have similar numbers. We are fond of Italy as a travel destination, and consider it as safe as most other European countries. With simple precautions, you shouldn’t be pickpocketed while visiting Italy. Much of the world is more hostile today. Travelers need to understand where the threats are, and the typical crimes that can take place in their chosen destinations. So, do your homework in advance. Being pickpocketed can totally destroy a trip. All your money, maybe passport, phone, and camera gone in one horrible instant when you did not quite pay attention, didn’t really have your antennas up, and your guard was down. But pickpocketing is not a physically brutal crime. It is not a mugging, it is not an express kidnapping, it is not rape, or worse. Some other popular travel destinations have higher violent crime statistics than Italy does. It comes down to “traveler beware!” Shifting some of the responsibility over to the individual, just as hacking is now an issue of what to click and not to click in your incoming emails, and your health is a matter of annual check-ups and lifestyle choices. In fact “Traveler Beware” should be the mantra today for every tourist who chooses to leave his or her own cocoon of home security to plan a trip.
+BobArnoOfficial I really thought one of them with the bonding you had with them. Would of owned up and gave you your lucky (empty) wallet back. ;( Still enjoyed the documentary tho!

+TheBadGuy You touched on a problem all across Europe when arresting a diversion thief. Usually, but not in all cities, you need a victim to report the theft and an arresting officer who saw what happened, and will testify that he saw the hand of the thief extract-not just attempt to extract-the wallet or purse. Exception: some tourist destinations, like Munich with its Octoberfest will arrest any thief who even attempts to steal, without the need for a victim to testify. Which is why, at these events, huge numbers of pickpockets are arrested over a ten day period. In some jurisdictions camera surveillance holds up in court.
they didnt actually film them stealing from someone and keeping their belongings. what we saw were staged and when it was real, they returned it to the owners
What struck me most about this is the trust between Bob and the pickpockets in Naples. Hanging out with these guys could have been very dangerous for him. And accepting to all join hin in a restaurant could have been a dangerous trap for them. But the mutual appreciation of their shared skills gave them mutual respect and trust. True cultural exchange of a different kind.
Isopod The Merciless, I'm guessing just like runescape?! Hah!! I used to enjoy that game while I was littler, seems like I don’t have the time for it anymore.....
Moral of the story, don't let people get too close to you. And yeah, the Italians really do have multi course meals. We had 7 at my Brother's birthday in Biello.
It isn't everyday but on Sundays and events we always have an antipasta (prosciutto, cheese, oiled veggies) to start, then pasta plate, then meat & veggies , then fruits & desert with espresso. You can never be on a diet in an Italian family.
This felt like a video game😂franco was the helping character and all the other ppl were side characters and angelo was the final boss and he had dinner with all the bosses😂☠
At the end when they're all together, it would be funny if Chris Hanson came out of the back room and said "I'm Chris Hanson and we're doing a story on Pickpockets". :D
Bob, thanks to you I developed a skill of pickpocketing of my own :) I will do as you do in my school! I have already pick pocketed multiple people, with items such as phones, wallets, pens, money, student ID's, etc. Though, I plan not on keeping them, as I have given the items back immediately. What I plan on doing is reporting this issue with my principle so he can review the tapes from the cameras in the hallways. I plan on making the students in my school more aware of pickpocketing with them seeing how I do so in the hallways. I'm sure they'll be thankful! :D Cheers! (I go to school in New York btw. MANY desirable items here lol!)
You guys have lots of weird assumptions and questions about the pickpockets in Naples and this film. Are they still working the streets? Why have the police not arrested them? Are they angry about the impact of the documentary? Some of you also wonder if it’s safe for me to return to Napoli now that the film has around five million views globally (in various language versions). Pickpockets dislike teamwork because they don’t trust their partners. It’s all about the snitch culture, and not trusting team members if one gets caught. Yet, they’re more likely to succeed when working in a pair or team of three. They certainly don’t need to collaborate as they all know the same moves, learned as children or teenagers and perfected over many years. It’s difficult to arrest a skillful pickpocket because they have spotters whose sole assignment is to watch for undercover cops; and in any case, a good thief can usually “smell” an undercover cop. Jail sentences are rare and always brief, since pickpocketing is a non-violent crime and the prisons are full of more serious criminals. So they’re right back out on the street, back to their usual occupation. And yes, many pickpockets recognize me because of this film -- they’ve seen one version or another -- and give me the finger if they spot me-or a high-five. The belt steal, a theatrical stunt, is not applicable in the real world. Pickpockets do not talk to their victims before an extraction, versus a stage pickpocket who distracts with dialog and mumbo-jumbo chatter. If you want more precise understanding of the world of street pickpockets, see our blog at www.thiefhunters.com
+BobArnoOfficial Its almost as if the camera was an apprentice the whole time, then at the end he proved it to the masters he had what it took. Good documentary, loved the pickpocket views. Very unique.
There are many questions about the making of this documentary. You wonder if the thieves are really actors. You ask why they cooperated with us, and why they allowed their faces to be shown. We have addressed these concerns in previous replies. In The Making of Pickpocket King, bobarno.com/thiefhunters/bob-arno-pickpocket-king-national-geographic-documentary/, you can read about the daily challenges we encountered and about the scariest moments. We never knew from one day to the next if the thieves would agree to be on camera and demonstrate their most guarded secrets. The thievery culture in Naples, Italy, is unique, since all the “players” are locals. In other big cities, pickpockets are mostly transients who come from many countries. It took me more than 15 years of visiting Napoli to build up trust. Yet, I had never met or observed any of the thieves in Pickpocket King, except for Angelo. Stealing a belt, which I do on stage in Las Vegas and elsewhere, is only possible in a theatrical environment, while I'm talking to the "victim." He becomes verbally bamboozled. In real street scenarios there is rarely communication between thieves and victims. It's all stealth or creating distractions and pretenses. No street pickpocket (versus a stage performer) will ever attempt to steal a belt, even if he knows exactly how to execute the technique. And very few travelers carry money folded into an actual money belt. If there is ONE lesson to learn from watching this documentary, it is to carry your valuables in a pouch under your clothes. Especially in locations known for pickpockets. Stow your things securely and you won't have to worry about pickpockets. If you want to know more about pickpockets, who they are and how they steal, start here: bobarno.com/thiefhunters/pickpockets-con-artists-scammers-travel/
now this was a fun and educational video to watch. I have never been a victim of a pick pocket but now i know how to prepare if i ever go on vacation. Thanks Bob for a wonderful video
I enjoyed this documentary and the warnings. But a couple of things I wondered while watching: 1. Please tell me you and your wife actually enjoyed seeing Pompeii and the other points of interest while you were lamenting not finding any pickpockets. 2. Did you not bring a change of clothes???
We enjoyed Pompeii and we adore Naples. The clothes… haha. We had to cut extra buttonholes in shirts for hidden cameras, so we did repeat a bit. You might like to know that we each had two identical shirts with the cuts. Hey-you can read about the making of the documentary here: bobarno.com/thiefhunters/bob-arno-bambi-pickpocket-documentary/ All behind-the-scenes stuff.
AMWF You’re laughing at the fact that a man’s wearing sunglasses in the middle of summer in southern Italy. The actual reason both him and his wife are wearing a very dark tint of sunglasses is because they need to be able to keep their eyes on their bag or pocket so they can spot the technique used by the thief without tipping them off by letting them see that they’re looking right at them.
My first reaction before watching this was, "go Bob! More power to you!" (in terms of catching the "bad guys/gals") And I still say "Go Bob!" but after seeing the Napolitani pickpockets, likeable middle aged men with good will, hearts and humanity who grew up working for the Mafia, and who say that they are ashamed of what they do "because maybe HE (God?) is ashamed of me", I long for them to find peace, God's grace, and a new life. Yes, I wish them God's best.
My 70 year old aunt was in Naples just last Saturday and leaving a cruise ship on a bus to the rail station. She is very unsure of herself and was targeted by these spineless cowards in a gang of three. They stole her purse with money and cards then jumped off the bus like little girls. These pieces of shit ruined an old lady's birthday holiday, one she had saved up for 10 years to go on. God will look down on them and weep
Oh my goodness! this makes me so sad! I hope that your grandmother was able to enjoy her time there despite the incident. Those guys will get karma I'm sure of it
Bill Settle - I know you posted this a year ago but I felt I should tell you how sorry I am this happened to your aunt. Older people are an easy target, especially when they're out of their comfort zone. Maybe tourist services like Perillo Tours should set up tours that cater to older people that hires security people to look after them so this type of thing doesn't happen. Am quite sure there would be no shortage of senior citizens that would sign up for the opportunity to travel and be safe at the same time.

I was just waiting for this comment
I remember watching this a few years ago, and it never gets old.
Even the thieves have a certain charm, although I certainly dislike their occupation.
A Sicilian once told me that a Neapolitan can steal the soles off your shoes while you are wearing them
He just made himself a Godfather and built his own family all on camera 👀😲
I bet not!
Sensei Bob how do I shirt ?
+BobArnoOfficial I enjoyed your documentary, Bob. When are you next in the UK?

Well, randomly ran into this video, can't say i was disappointed. Informative and fun look into the world. Could watch mroe of this stuff.
wow, i loved this documentary.. one of the best I've seen..
John Estrella Jr. So good right classic
Love ALL you said here , Maniac Mcgee ❤👌🏴
Ah yes, group crime. So beautiful
Are you taking the piss? 😂
I salute you !
you will have a different perspective of this so called cultural exchange once you lose something valuable to thieves. trust me I know
I gained 5 levels in pickpocketing just by watching this

Funny thing is, I watched this documentary a couple of years ago, then traveled to Netherlands and still got pick pocketed within 48 hours of being there. It's amazing how companies, banks and governments all employ the same tactics as pickpockets. Only difference is they tell you they do it, in a long winded document called "terms and conditions", nobody has the patience to read.
Thanks for this amazing documentary, it was a pleasure to watch!
Difference between Bob, and the thieves is, is that Bob does it for fun, they did it to feed themselves once upon a time. When it comes to survival you'd be surprised the tricks you'd learn. Great Documentary!!!

pickpocketing is a beautiful and sad art.
I agree ! It was such a wonderful thing to see. You said it perfectly !
The pickpockets were just stealing wallets, now they are being taught by the best how to steal watch worth $10k-100k. Wow talk about on the job training.
A watch worth 10k-100k? Try 100 times less :p
Most watches that price dont come off like cheap ones, like most rolexs the bands don’t unclip so you have to slide off like a ring

Just imagine getting robbed of your grandfather's watch, and then the thief gets interviewed.
I was waiting for them to get caught😂 like, wasn't the show about finding and catching them?
i really enjoyed this show as Bob connected with the pickpockets and they formed more tthan a camaraderie, even friendship - it was just beautiful. and it seemed like something of his happy spirit touched theirs. you never know, maybe one of them or all of them will become professional showmen someday, like Bob! I hope he returns to visit them, perhaps every year if he can afford it, because he's a senior, and those times he shared with the men were priceless jewels for all!
To those who suggest avoiding Italy:
Yes, Italy, be it Florence, Rome, or Naples, has lots of pickpocketing.
In fact “Traveler Beware” should be the mantra today for every tourist who chooses to leave his or her own cocoon of home security to plan a trip.

so im guessing these guys are in jail now with all this evidence??
It doesn't look like it
+BobArnoOfficial you had filmed evidence, that is enough
well hopefully mr bad guy

What struck me most about this is the trust between Bob and the pickpockets in Naples. Hanging out with these guys could have been very dangerous for him. And accepting to all join hin in a restaurant could have been a dangerous trap for them. But the mutual appreciation of their shared skills gave them mutual respect and trust. True cultural exchange of a different kind.

It isn't everyday but on Sundays and events we always have an antipasta (prosciutto, cheese, oiled veggies) to start, then pasta plate, then meat & veggies , then fruits & desert with espresso. You can never be on a diet in an Italian family.

You're a great person, I'd love to spread awareness aswell!
I'm doing the exact same thing :) except I keep the money, phones, ID's ect. And I've never been happier. Sorry to kill your vibe xD.
Or, you're the only one in the entire school that pickpockets, and there was no need to make anyone else aware.....
You dating anyone? Lol
@@stellarose2654 hey Stella, here we are 7 years after your comment. Do you still keep rollin' in & out those pockets? :D
Do you know Apollo Robin's way of pick pocketing.
I will put Sarin ( a deathly chemical) in my wallet and let them die. 😈

I laughed so hard. 😂😂😂
