    I really enjoyed thinking about what makes Hawaii people so great. Yes, we have our flaws, but there are also so many wonderful things about locals in Hawaii. Sometimes I feel like I can be overly critical of Hawaii and the way we do things. It was nice to try to focus on more of the positives. 🤙

    You can tell Chris is one of the few Hawaii RUclipsrs that pays attention to the cultural aspects and not just the surface level beauty.
    That in itself is beautiful since it's not as talked about.

    I liveonthe mainland but have danced hula long enough to be comfortable with our diaspora Hawaiians. I agree with all of what you say about locals. I have not had an incident since maybe the first couple of years visiting Hawaii. I am an elder and I feel that locals are much more respectful of us old timers than on the mainland. I feel the same about Tribal people.too.

    Great job! Thanks for posting this. BTW, if you're not from Hawaii, these are just generalizations- there are locals here who are not friendly, have little or no sense of humor, and/or are not generous with their resources. Still, though, I like to think the "Aloha Spirit" does still shine here, for the most part.
    My guesses to that ethnic "quiz" : Japanese, Chinese, Caucasian, Filipino, Korean, Hawaiian.

    This is one of the many reasons why we call these islands home. There's really no other place that you can crack a joke at someone's stereotype and receive it right back at you, laugh it up and still call them your bradah or sistha. We are really the most ethnic diverse society anywhere. Awesome video my bradah 🤙

    • @HelloFromHawaii
      @HelloFromHawaii  2 года назад +1

      Glad you've noticed that here. It all comes down to the heart of the joke.

    • @tracyalan7201

      It hasn't happened yet but with the slow passing of the old local comedians and Island personalities, it might slowly dissipate among the culture. The mingling of all the communities during the plantation days, sharing food, hardships, friendships, fun helped to make share the Aloha among the diverse groups. With those hardships, sharing, bonding gone, there are still intermarriages that cement ethnic groups but what is growing is an economic widening of classes in thought and action. That widening will split families apart even though they share the same bloodlines, it becomes hardened as the economic wealth of some versus others start to impact on what some access and others don't/can't. It's something that we all must work to maintain keeping our perspectives and core values.

    When you say it's the people that you miss the most about Hawaii, you are right on the money! Every time someone has asked me what I miss most about Hawaii, that has always been my answer. I often tell others of how you can meet someone for the very first time in Hawaii and they treat you like they've known you their whole life. And, I can't tell you how many times I've experienced the generosity of Hawaii people - even her on the mainland! I lived in Hawaii for more than 20 years, and I still consider myself a Hawaii person, because these characteristics are so much a part of me. I don't ever want to lose them - even though they aren't as appreciated here on the mainland.
    BTW, thanks for your generosity by making these videos. They always make my day. 🤙🌺🌈 Oh, yeah. Happy New Year (a little late)! 🎍

    Our family has been away from the islands almost 5 years now and this coming summer we are finally moving back home! That’s one thing I will say I’ve missed the most, the people of Hawaii-there’s no where on the mainland that comes close to the feeling of community and togetherness that I used to feel back on the islands and I am so grateful to finally be going back. Once we touch ground on Oahu, I’m never leaving again! :) mahalo for the videos, keep up the good work!

    I loved this. I think this is one reason people are always on the lookout for islanders when they move away. And, you're right about the depth of the friendliness. Where I live people are friendly....up to a point. There seems to be an invisible wall that you can't get through unless you've known them for a long time or are related. Hawaii friendliness is more relaxed and accepting. So many things came to my mind when you were talking about the generosity of time: a co-worker mowing my lawn when I was ill, watching over each others' keiki, sharing vegetables, etc. And so funny about the way we walk!!! So true.

    Soooo Right, God knows I miss everyone I knew and all those I didn’t (everyday meets), you could always find a friend just by walking around. Use to love the Aloha Stadium Flea Market each weekend, just stop and look at something and start talking story, next thing friends for life (😊), next time, they yelling at you to come over, talk story, meet someone etc. one Big Ohana, if you let it happen best thing in the World, no place like Hawaii (home). Been around the world, lived in several foreign Countries, visited even more and never found anyplace like Hawaii. 🤙🏼❤️🇺🇸🤠

    Everything that you have stated about the people from Hawaii is just right, especially when perspective is coming from a local like yourself. Yes, there is that Aloha spirit, the hang loose 🤙 kind of attitude, the rhythm of life is mellow and easy going, and it’s the people on the Islands, which makes it such. There is that welcoming attitude and that’s what’s so unique about it. Unfortunately, some visitors just don’t know how to respect or let’s say there is lack of understanding of the local culture.

    Hawaiian locals & Southerners are by far my absolute favorite ppl ever. I was born in California, but spend half of my life in Hawaii & in the south (Florida & Alabama). I want to go back to Hawaii & raise my kids there. Right now things are just way too crazy w/ the economy being bad, water contamination, political corruption, etc. Hopefully, things will get better soon there because I want to go back home to Hilo. That's where my heart is. I lived on Oahu, mainly Millani & Kailua, for 5 years, but nothing beats the Big Island. Some thee most polite, hospitable, down to earth people & I absolutely love each & every single one of them.

No place mo bettah except maybe Japan when it comes to a sense of safety/friendliness in a developed society

    • @JeffHalverson
      @JeffHalverson 2 года назад +1

      @@Flowmada Interesting response, as I am from Minnesota but have lived in Japan for twenty-five years. Minnesota is a real authentic friendliness. I suppose that living in such a harsh environment requires neighbors to cooperate. Japan is similar due to needing cooperation from typhoons and earthquakes. While Japan is friendly, its a distant polite friendliness. Making true friends in Japan is a very long process.
      I suspect Hawaii to be more similar to Minnesota style friendliness...

    My mom was born in Oahu. Lived in the base as her parents were military. Unfortunately during Pearl Harbor, she was shipped to the mainland and never moved back. She was just shy of turning 11. Can’t imagine being put on a ship without her mom and shipped to another place to live with family she never knew. She said it was the scariest thing she ever lived through. I was born and raised in CA then moved to OR. I never went to HA with her before she died and regret that very much. I have family there (her sister’s family) and would have really like to connect with them. So sad. I think about them all the time. We had pictures of them always out. Of course the pics were when they were kids and they’d be in 40’s 50’s and 60’s now!

    And before I came back to the mainland, a barista from Lion coffee and I traded gifts. We had no connection other than customer and barista. But it made me tear up a little. She even wrote me a huge note, appreciating me both as a frequent customer and as a nice person. I wrote her back via Facebook messenger-I know, not the same-about how much I appreciated my time on the island and how I yes still would like to stay back. I don't wear the store shirt she gave me. The song Mr. Sun Cho Lee by the Beamer Brothers kind of sums up the stereotypical humor in Hawaii. I remember the first time my cousins from the mainland came to visit and got offended by some of the jokes we were saying. It took me a while to realize how fortunate we are in Hawaii, everyone is a minority and can be made fun of equally. I get why my cousins don't see the humor in stereotypes, I can't imagine growing up being treated like "the other".

    • @HelloFromHawaii
      @HelloFromHawaii  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, I experienced that difference when I was in college in CO. The other Asians didn't find the jokes as funny.

    • @vp3970
      @vp3970 2 года назад

      Your cousin is uneducated. Why are you-cousin offended? Every ethnicity mentioned in the aforementioned song is made fun of, it isn’t mean spirited. The song is not meant to hurt because: we marry each other.
      I have 1/2 Japanese cousins, my half sister is Chinese and like me Filipino. My mother-in-law is full Korean and my wife’ father is: Hawaiian; Scottish, Irish, English. My daughter married a man who is Samoan and German, so what does that make my grand children?
      I want that right for my grandchildren to sing that song and reserve the right for them to laugh and banter. It’s funny an that is what makes us unique. It is not mean spirited.
      When Martin Luther King crossed awful bridge in the south, all of his delegation wore lei, did you know that? The story to that is he spent time in Hawaii and MLK said that the diverse culture and their love for each other is what his speeches are about. Many many locals donated time and money to string lei to signify aloha ( love, charity, peace) to all the world on that infamous day.
      To those unfamiliar with our culture and our customs please do not criticize too harshly, I believe that the world needs more funny aloha to remove racial incompatibilities and enmity.
      Aloha🌺 a 74 year old Hawaiian, Haole, Bukbuk man from Nanakuli.

    II'm from the SF bay area in California. I once did a survey once to see how many people I randomly saw at the park, store, movie theater during the day would acknowledge me. 80 percent of the people would simply avoid eye contact with you. They would look the other way or pretend they are reading something on their phone. The remaining 20% would look at you and keep walking. Now how much energy does it take to say "hi", nod your head, or otherwise acknowledge you as a person. I guess that's California living....... Once in a while, someone would say hi, and I would be in shock! Take care.

    You gotta be able to embrace your personal flaws and laugh at them. Or else they will own you.

    C'mon my bruddah.... Red Hill water contamination issue is important! I think you would do well to raise awareness on this issue. Hawaii is Our HOME. Not asking for you to solve this problem... This WON'T be solved.... But people who you are speaking to.... They probably would like to know about it. Right? Whether they listen to your perspectives and seriously consider them in making decisions either to visit here or move here. Elevate the awareness of what's going on at Red hill. It's important to you, and your ohana as much as it is to ours. Everyone. At least think about it. MAHALO!

      I've thought about making a video, but still haven't decided. Not that it's not an important issue, but I don't think the issue is fully resolved. Any video I make at this point would feel incomplete.

      @@HelloFromHawaii First of all, thanks for replying. I appreciate that. I understand what your saying. In the interest of being a credible and honest perspective, it's important to be rational and thorough with an accurate account of the facts. Especially when it comes to these types of issues. I am aware about the potential negative affects that could result to this channel, your integrity, and purpose. which I wouldn't want to happen. but listen, Hawaii is the focus point of your channel. Life in Hawaii is the focus point of this channel. This issue is a reality of life in Hawaii. I'm not saying I want to go full blast journalist about it. I'm not a journalist. I Can tell you from my own research and what I've learned is...
      This will never be resolved. The Navy Contaminates water everywhere they are. They take little to no responsibility about it and fight responsibility and suppresses awareness. Without awareness, there is no resolve. It shocks me how little concern people have here in Hawaii! What the Navy has done here is not unique. It's a pattern. What is unique is HAWAII. I'm concerned about our children's present and futures. If you can do anything to help with awareness I would appreciate it. But I wouldn't go as far as to day what I've said about the Navy doing this everywhere they are. People can find that out on their own like I did if they choose. Just here. I admit it would be a balancing act to accomplish. I will understand and respect whatever your decision is. 2am in the morning..... Have a good night or have a good day. One of those.
      BOTH OF THOSE!😁

    When I lived in Hawaii, I was greeted by an older man who claimed to be a South Korean refugee from the Korean Conflict. He said he came to Hawaii to escape war and then he told me to go home because white guys are not welcome. I got into a couple of fights, had my phone stolen and found out they celebrate killing white people. Some Hawaiians were really nice but many I think of like Native Nazis. Saying these people are just having a bit of fun/teasing with their racism is a complete lie. Some Hawaiians are great people but many are not.

    Wow, the drivers in Hawaii must have gotten really bad. The drivers in the SF Bay Area are way worse than anything I encountered in Hawaii.
