"Counter-Proposal" is the first episode of the fifth and final season of the ABC sitcom "That Girl" (1966-1971), and thus the season premiere. This episode was written by Saul Turtletaub and Bernie Orenstein, and directed by Saul Turtletaub. This episode first aired on ABC on September 25, 1970; Beginning with this episode, Ted Bessell's hair is now redesigned, and Marlo Thomas's hair gained a new look. Also, lyrics were added to the theme song, performed by The Ron Hicklin Singers.👍
"I didn't forgot." So sweet. All of us girls wanted a boyfriend like Donald Hollinger when we were growing up, watching "That Girl." Thank you, Marlo, for being someone for us young girls to look up to. I think Ann Marie was our first indication that a happy, independent life was a possibility. She did get a boyfriend in the first episode, but we knew he was a keeper.
she didnt marry him, because the crazy feminist Marlo Thomas said "carrier is more important than marriage". as if she was Anne Marie - its a character not reality.
Ann says that her and Don's "first date" (6:28) was at "Citrus City". However actually in the very first episode when they first met in an office building Don took her to a far fancier place as they were discussing a rolling desk she bought for him and when the waiter brought over a tray of desserts Don split an eclair with her.
9:33 “Will you marry me?” … a cornerstone moment in New York filmography… the orchestration of violins and flugelhorns … the Peter Max backdrop … the enraptured, twirling, soon-to-be bride … yes, a rare TV moment indeed.
I used to see this series in syndication when I was a kid in the 70s and I remember that moment as a re-run. It must have been fun to see it brand new. The way they made it so “dreamy” was a thing of the 60s-70s.
When I was growing up, we had a hole-in-the-wall restaurant kind of like Ann and Donald's Citrus City, Orange Crazy place. This was in Toronto in the late 1960's and early 1970's. It was called The Honey Dew, and it was tucked inside the basement level of a downtown Toronto department store called Simpson's. My mom would take us there for a treat in the summer time. I think they only had red hots (hot dogs) and honey dew orange to drink, on the menu. The drink was served in a silver metal cup holder, with a cone shaped dixie cup inside. Green leaves around the dixie cup. A delicious fun treat, and a treasured memory of my childhood with my mom. She made so many simple things so very special. I miss her every day.
The jeweller, Mr. Franklin, Jerry Bauman's uncle, was Avery Schreiber. Even without his signature moustache, that was Avery Schreiber. He appeared in a couple of other That Girl episodes, too.
Hi. Yes Ted Bessell didn't exactly jump off the screen on Gomer Pyle, but he did fine in 5 seasons of That Girl ( tho I don't know why the ladies consider him handsome ). He seemed to be a good guy, a strong Catholic, actually, according to a picture posted of his gravestone. What would we do without the old shows ?! Hang in there.
Marlo Thomas said she didn't want to end "That Girl" by having a marriage and she didn't want to send a message to young girls that marriage was the ultimate goal for a young woman to achieve. Yet in this final season, they showed a marriage proposal, both bachelor/bachelorette parties, and an episode showing Don and Ann looking for an apartment together. If you're not going to have a wedding why have a season of all these pre-marriage events??
I completely agree with you, however, Marlo owned Daisy productions (a gift from Daddy) and everything was going to be done her way. As should be the ratings bombed and the show was canned. If this fiasco had continued another season, it would have been That Divorcee. Thankfully Donald Hollinger dodged a very emasculating bullet.
What a beautiful sweet moment for That Girl! Donald is such a sweet wonderful guy!!! Oh Donald!! But the guy who wanted his ring back was an A-hole he should have got another ring!
I really love the fifth season on That Girl. The first episode " Counter - Proposal " was about Donald finally decides to propose to Ann Marie. However, his friends convince him to buy her a second - hand engagement ring. I totally love Ann's hair style because it's so long and straight. It was so good and I can rate it 10/10 for the wonderful episode. - Filsan Sharif
Groovy belted jumpsuit in first scene. and love her hair long and relaxed . Wears a middle part so well. Lucky! Prefer the cleaner cut hair and look of Donald's character in the earlier years of this show. Why did they change the theme song again? This and shows like it are last of an age of chivalry.=...]
The ratings for That Girl throughout its 5-year run were never in the Top 30 (or Top 45 for that matter). There were rumblings that her father Danny Thomas used his influence with the sponsors to keep the show on the air)
I still say that Marlo Thomas was wrong when she prevented them from getting married on this show. She married late, but so did I. We will have been married for 39 years on the 22nd of this month. I didn't even get an engagement ring, but I didn't care. My husband is the best friend I've EVER had, and that's the most important thing to me.
Ronnie Schell, Don's ring-swapping friend, Bob Howard, also played Ann's agent in a couple of earlier episodes. They recycled a few other actors as well, like Jesse White, and Avery Schreiber.
Sometimes I think the character of Ann Marie comes off as a worry wart, neurotic nut who drinks too much caffeine, and poor Don has to spend a lot of time scraping her off the ceiling. 🤣
Used to see this show, but I see here.Ronnie Schell from Gomer Pyle is on here too, Gomer Pyle ended in 1969, and I guess He got picked up for that girl not long after.
yeah crazy feminism breaks great Dons heart at the end.- feminist Marlo Thomas didnt want Anne to get married last episode, "a woman's carrier is more important than marriage" - she said that!
In August of 2023 converting from September 25th of 1970: Best if the best ring cost $3,502,526.79. Don's choice costs $7,394.22 The deposit to hold the ring cost Don $389.17 Don only had $194.58 in his pocket The dealer settled for $155.67 What was Betty's ring which Bob now owns is worth $10,896.75 ...but Bob will let Don have it for $7,394.22 Most expensive item on Citrus City's menu is $5.06 At 7:25, on the wall, the Fish Steak Sandwich costs $5.84 ...and fried chicken cost $9.34 Ann insured the package at the end of the episode for $77,833.93
Jumped into the Seventies with both feet. Cheesy version of the theme with lyrics to match (Chestnuts? They couldn't be bothered to do a new opening montage?) ugly "mod' pantsuit, the parted down the middle with an ax hairstyle (there could have been a whole episode or two where she eased into that new do). First date was an Italian restaurant, not Citrus City; Ronny Schell back, her very first agent. Avery Schriver back, the garment industry brother.
I wanted them to get married and move to CA because Ann got a great part in a movie! Don becomes a screen writer and they lived happily ever after. (I was 13 when this episode aired.)
yeah but crazy feminist Marlo Thomas ruined the series not getting married saying a " women's carrier is more important than marriage" - dumping Don, who was so good to her.
@@TheTriplelman She isn't a crazy feminist opposed to marriage. She married Phil! She went on to do great things in her life promoting woman and children!
Apparently for the last season somebody thought it would be cute to put lyrics to the theme song. Just because on the same network they had Love American Style, with their theme with lyrics. But the lyrics for this...meh....I'd' rather hear the instrumental. Maybe they were competing against that new fangled serie s on CBS, The Mary Tyler Moore Show with the famous song and lyrics "who can turn the world on with her smile...." etc.
@@victoriavictoria9693 She picked original one....$250. About 650 in todays money but still she cried and sniffled for days. Still talks about it occasionally.

Marlo ended the show cause she didn't want Ann to get married. But, you know a lot of trivia!
Seems a lot of the shows including I Dream of Jeannie, fall flat after the two leads get married. Even happened to The Nanny some odd 20 years later.
I would have just started my 4th week at Parris Island, Marine Corps boot camp.
I just love Ann Marie Thank you for posting these shows they mean so much to me

Love this episode and how cute the chemistry was between them! Have to say that I still like the intro music from season 1 the best!
Interesting to see Ted Bessell and Ronnie Schell play buddies on this show after playing Gomer Pyle's 2 buddies Duke and Frankie.

so true, crazy feminist steps in and forgets its a character she plays, its not herself, so what about breaking Dons heart?
Yes, they did everything but get married. And the other thing they didn't do.

Was thier a That Girl doll ?
yes & I have one , it's Marlo wearing the outfit when she's holding the flag.
I’m still say for a girl that didn’t believe in tradition she was thrilled to get engaged
Didn't Ronnie Shell play Ann's agent in one of the episodes?
Yes... I'm sure of it.
and their 1st date was because of the roll-top desk and NOT at Citrus City.
Prefer the shorter hairstyles of Don & Anne in the previous seasons.

If the show was today, Anne would want Donald to ensure the diamond was not a blood diamond, or it is environmentally friendly.
and they would be inviting their trans-friends over for twister and jello- sex. - the old days were better.

Yeah Don was mostly there to, according to sources at the time, "confirm Ann's heterosexuality".
the alphabet soup group crazies were not in power back then
Why didn't Anne Marie count the money, I hope Don didn't noticed the bring if it is different.
