An exquisite and rare surviving Lada 1200L Riva with only 11,442 miles
EQUIPMENT
Reinforced body, underchassis, transmission and suspension. Profile aluminium bumpers with rubber insert, mudflaps, heated rear screen, automatic reversing lights, high intensity rear fog light, exterior coachline, wing repeater indicators, reclining front seats with adjustable head restraints, courtesy lights in boot and under-bonnet, interior adjustable door mirror, door storage pockets, 20-piece toolkit. Factory options; Nearside door mirror. Dealer accessories; Beaded seat covers.
EXTERIOR
A fascinating rare survivor, this delightful Lada Riva is finished in Ivory White which remains in superb, largely original condition. The bright uniform paintwork gleams and inspection of the bodywork condition reveals the great preserved shape this car is in. There are some small areas of carefully touched-in paintwork throughout in order to preserve the beautiful appearance. The body panels are factory fitment and the original spot welds clearly visible along the sills are a rare surviving feature. The profile aluminium bumpers still have unbroken rubber inserts with some light tarnishing to the surface. Registration etched glass remains fitted all-round as do original supplying dealer number plates and the badges to each rear quarter and boot lid proudly denote this as a higher spec 1200L model!
INTERIOR
This very low mileage Lada Riva interior remains the sturdy utilitarian and purposeful space it was always intended to be. The original black PVC seat coverings underneath the luxury wooden beaded seat covers are in incredible condition with no wear, rips or tears. The seats retain correct shape and the black vinyl door cards are immaculate and complete with fixing screws haphazardly distributed, just as it left the factory! The carpets exude durability over opulence and the hard-wearing pile is free from damage, as is the perfect clean headlining. All gauges and controls operate and have a sturdy if not luxurious feel! The huge boot area houses the original 20-piece toolkit fully complete including inspection lamp and tools stamped ‘made in USSR’!
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The four-cylinder 1198cc OHV engine is factory fitment. Developing 62bhp at 5600rpm, the sales brochure quotes peak speed at 90mph. The engine compartment is clean and complete with the build plates, VAZ VIN plate and bulkhead chassis stamp. The 4-speed manual gearbox operates perfectly and feels agricultural strong!
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
This exceptional example has factory fitted 13” steel wheels in excellent condition with perfect Lada centre caps. Five matching brand 165/80 R13 tyres retain masses of tread and the spare has never been used. The standard braking system incorporating front discs has been overhauled so operates well.
HISTORY FILE
Supplied new by Lada Man Dealer, Cants Lane Garage in Burgess Hill, this example was purchased new by Mrs Grisdale and registered on the 30th November 1984. Mrs Grisdale owned the car until 2000 and despite covering very minimal mileage throughout her ownership, the car was meticulously serviced and maintained every year, as evidenced in the large and comprehensive history file. The same independent garage was used for many years until Mrs Grisdale became dissatisfied with its new owner’s service after car was returned to her with a puncture. This Lada was very well cared for with many invoices illustrating several visits each and every year for servicing, maintenance and MOT testing as well as the original service book holding stamped entries. Mrs Grisdale also kept detailed notes about the car extending to its luggage carrying capabilities and what monthly, quarterly and annual checks should be carried out! In 2019 and following the passing of the original owner, the family were handling the estate and found keys and an address for a rented lock up garage. Upon attending the garage, and much to their surprise as they were unaware that she owned a car, this Lada was discovered! A subsequent sale to the second owner saw the car taken to a renowned Lada ‘guru’ whereby a thorough process of full recommissioning took place using wherever possible, genuine NOS Lada parts. Two sets of keys, an original 1984 Lada range brochure and a Lada Riva cushion complete the history file.
HPI Clear.
Essence of car. As someone who works with new cars and all the complicated systems (and problems!) they bring, I appreciate the absolute simplicity of this immaculate old girl.
Simple but works!
If someone told me thirty years ago that it would be possible to buy a Lada for £11,000 I would not believe it. Hope she finds herself a nice collection or museum to go to, love it!
You’d have to be utterly insane to pay this price - rare or not!

Thank you for comment!
Had one of these for a while back in the 80s in blue. Gotta say I really liked it. Proper smooth ride. Very underrated imo. 👍
Great thank you for sharing!
I live in Bulgaria and there’s tens of thousands of these still on the road, all converted to run on LPG at 40p a litre. Spares are easy to come by and any mechanic can fix them.
This one would make them green with envy!
Great cars!
She's like new absolutely stunning condition ! One for a collection and to be kept like this !
Stunning!
A fabulous slice of back to basics motoring.👍
Yes indeed!
Ah! How lovely to see one of 'our' children! I worked for Cants Lane Garage, as a mechanic,
from the mid 1990's until its closure in 2001 (the site was sold for development) Funnily enough I'm going out to dinner with the two former directors on Friday, one of the two would have been the salesman who sold the car. Cants Lane Garage never really disappeared completely, it survived in one form or another for years..... It's been quietly growing for a few years, so will hopefully be fully relaunched in the near future.
I still own four Ladas.
Great you may have even worked on the car!
@@KGFClassicCars I never personally saw the car. I would remember it very well if I had. I spoke to my former employers yesterday and Mike, one of the directors, sold her the car. She apparently wanted a pre Riva 1200, but they were no longer available. The estate pre Riva was still available, but she didn't want one of those. Apparently she was one of those customers that you just couldn't please...Pretty amazing considering that all happened nearly 40 years ago! He even remembered where she lived.
Quality control at import was such that back in the 80s my Dad bought a brand new 1300 only to find out over a year later it was actually a 1500 and they’d put the wrong badge on the boot. The dealer put a new badge on the boot and helped get an updated V5.
Thank you for the story!
What a fantastic find. Loved my blue 1300 select Riva in the 90s. 5 speed box and cloth not vinyl seats. I still say to this day they were the comfiest seats of any car I've owned.
Are these cars reliable?
Mine never let me down and would start every morning no matter how cold it was.
Great cars!
An absolutely stunning car it must be one of the best left in existence worldwide ,where are you going to get another one!
Thank you for your comment!
Simple in a charming way.
Thank you!
Had one just the same for 14 years, miss it dearly.
Great Cars!
Got one of these in 2000 - was only 4 years old - paid £250 for it as a stop gap whilst waiting for a brand new Skoda Fabia when it was launched - they wouldn’t hold my PX value for my Ford Escort so it made more sense to trade early and get a banger for a few months. The Riva was one of the last to be sold here, came equipped with a catalytic converter/carburettor combination which rendered almost all of them utterly useless and prone to breaking down - what looked like a bargain, low miles, great bodywork (considering it was a Lada and knocked together using steel presses that were clearly long past their prime at this point) the Carb issue meant it wouldn’t drive anywhere once it was warm - to fix it would be £400! (A Lada specialist garage said “don’t bother - all of these last ones are for the knackers yard”. I didn’t bother and as luck would have it, some kind soul decided it would be fun to set fire to it! So it ended up costing me £150 to have a scrap merchant drag it’s burnt out shell away. When it did drive I found it to be the most horrific thing on 4 wheels I’d ever driven - shocking ride and handling, terrifying in bends - would kick out the back end on a damp day, understeer made a Morris Marina feel sporty and it felt like it would fall apart at any moment. Truly dreadful cars. I doubt very much anyone, no matter how loyal to the communist contraptions, is going to pay £11k for this heap - I doubt many Lada followers would even have that sort of money to begin with. Quite a few overpriced KGF cars that are apparently ‘sold’ seem to crop up for sale elsewhere at more sensible prices - presumably when promises of windfalls don’t materialise for the people selling them…
Thank you for your comments. This car is also now sold! Hopefully the new owner will read this and offer his view of we think is a fabulous car!
Another great blast from the past. The panel gap on the offside boot lid is… big. But that’s how they made ‘em.
Panel gaps was a bit hit and miss bit like many British cars of the 70's!
Stunning Lada. I'm sure will only appreciate in years to come. Super rare now in UK. 👍👍👍
Yes, very rare!
Wow! The simplicity and what is now extremely cool retro styling is what makes this car desirable. Plus, the fact they'll go sideways for fun! 😂
Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome 😊
My parents had a 1600 back in 1984. Was actually pretty decent and solid. Huge steering wheel and swirly russian design on the blue doorcards! I remember that speedo needle 😂😂
They were crude but very sturdy!
Wow that’s a survivor!
Great survivor!
In a word Amazing total time warp looks as new fantastic example i would not expect many like that another fabulous find
Amazing!
Passed my test in an earlier version of one of these. Selecting gears was interesting. Great car as an investment I would say.
Totally agree!
What a truly excellent car , beautiful
Thank you!
Oh I remeber these, we had the 1500 white saloon and a coffee ish brown 1500 estate too. Couldn't grumble too much for the price they were at the time nis the 80's. Believe it or not the estate towed a caravan too lol.
Great thank you for sharing!
My dad bought a 1200L new in 1986 without doubt the worst car ever he has had. Always garaged and did about 3k miles in the time he owned it. Lovely to see one in great condition these days. H
And that was an export model. The ones produced for soviet domestic market were even worse. But! For many, many soviet people this was an absolute dream. Well, to own any car was a dream, you had to wait for up to 10 years to finally get one. Or, if you were desperate and had money to buy used one, you could get one any time from some private seller, only then it cost you nearly twice the price of a new one, because you could not just go and buy new one wenever you wanted. That's one of the many "positive" sides of "wonderful" Soviet Union...
This one shown in video is in mint condition, i would love to own it for nostalgic reasons.
Thank you for your comment!
Машина своего времени❤, а в таком состоянии и у нас🇷🇺 сложно найти👍🏻
Thank you for sharing!
I bought one of these back in the year 2000 from a local auction, its was a '92-J Riva 1.5E in white saloon and had 1700 miles on the clock, immaculate and still smelled new, for £50 plus £25 fees!!! Wish I'd garaged it, it'd be worth a fortune now!!!
It would, that would have been a keeper!
Car forever!
Yes, forever!
Beryl, or Doris, or whatever her name was from Driving School will be having a fit at the condition that this beauty is in…….£11k! Wow!
Maureen I think she was called
@@macpablo1169 Correct ;)
@@macpablo1169 ah yes, thanks!
Maureen that takes us back!
She was the most dangerous driver in the country, and oh, didn’t people laugh at her dreadful incompetence. She should never been allowed on the public highway, likewise the other pillocks featured in that series!
iam shocked one has survived. Remember about 21 21 years ago Russia was buying all the Ladas back. I was buying these for 100 150 pound and getting 600 too 1000 for them. Good times
Memories!
Now that’s special 👌👌
It is!
This takes me back. I used to PDI and service FSO cars. The 125 was very similar to this, as also based on the same old Fiat cars. Very cheap basic vehicles that a lot of people bought in the eighties.
A neighbour had a Polski-Fiat 125 - very well equipped when compared with British cars of the era.
Thank you for your comment!
I wish you'd open the boot on your videos.
There is full album of photos where you can see the boot area including a great tool kit! www.flickr.com/photos/kgfclassiccars/albums/72177720305548265
They are still being driven in Russia, VAZ made them till 2014. Latest examples were terrible, earlier like this are actually good. My granddad owns 1991 year model, his second car for a fishing vacations, he truly loves it, it can go anywhere, and if repainted and caringly maintained, will run forever. And my friend owned customised classic 1973 model, tuned by herself, with cool-looking wheels and sunroof, also engine was tuned to more power. Learned how to drive in Lada: oh, unforgettable: this neglected and rusted jalopy was falling apart even when PARKED. And it was made in 2009!
Thank you for your comment!
Correction: Russia stopped making those in 2012, Egypt kept assembling them until 2014.
Just like the FSO I had .
Thank you for sharing!
Basic motoring at it's very worse
Thank you!
Computer-free car
Basic but works!
Ha ha I remember them from when I worked at Kwik Fit in the 80s and 90s nobody ever wanted to work on them and nobody ever wanted to road test one. Great example though glad somebody looked after it but count me out I don't want it lol
Thank you for sharing!
Now that is a truly awful, disastrous, horrendous, horrible, terrible, woeful pile of old junk, that is very poorly made out of very low grade materials. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!
So do we!
Own it? I just want to sit in it and smell it lol, what did it sell for ?
Still for sale! do you want to buy?
@@KGFClassicCars not looking at the moment but thankyou, but keep me in mind for a yugo 45A Zistava i missed your last one yrs ago a van,but my ideal one would be a red hatchback even one needing restoration
Pretty nice Fiat...😄
Similar but the Lada has a number of differenced too!
When would be able to get the parts from and, body parts as well, they're are all gone now, be, very very, instresting,
You can get just about anything for them considering they still made them as recently as 2012 and produced over 15 million of them…. Now, there is of course the problem of exporting stuff from Russia right now….
@@MarthaMansbridge that good to know you can get the parts for this car, I do hope someone will be able to look after the car, I had my classic car for, 29th years, lovely,
Parts are fairly easy to get!
So they were a good buy after all 🤣 I'm sure some Sanctioned Russian oligarch will be delighted to buy it 👍👍
