- building a homemade lathe is easy with this diy homemade lathe tutorial, part 3. ever think "man i wish i had a small lathe but i dont want to spend any money"? I have built a few lathes. but i had the idea " wouldn't it be interesting to build a lathe ONLY from the parts that are already in my shop." Honestly i wish i had tried this sooner, i had no idea how much stuff i had laying around, nor that i actually had enough to build a lathe.
this lathe was born from the need to turn a few tool handles, except that i didn't have a lathe small enough to do it. obviously the little lathe is for woodturning and wood turning only. i would not attempt to turn anything other than wood on this little lathe. and actually the lathe is really only intended to do spindle turning.
I cover different aspects of homemade lathe building including spur drive, live center, and bed ways.

Good job on the live center.
I like the way you think! Nice progress!
+Willem Kossen thanks! I hope that at least one person can get just one or two ideas from this that they can then use as a stepping stone to something else. Inspiration always comes from something previous!
great work!!!, buen trabajo, saludos desde la patagonia argentina!
+Juli N gracias!

+Kevin honey (kg) it certainly is...out of necessity
yes i dont have a lot of room my self that would help me.
+Kevin honey (kg) i think i'm going to call it the lazy Ray from now on!
isn't grinding on thd side of a wheel kind of like crossing the streams? :)
+Cliff Hartle not sure about that, but I use the sides only when I want to gently grind on something.
+Ray Pena I was always told the wheel could explode.

+Cliff Hartle interesting! I've never seen it. I have however witnessed 24" diameter surface grinder and Blanchard grinder stones explode, while using them "correctly" . I suppose it might just be one of those "sometimes it just happens" kind of things.
Besides the forces I think it's also an issue with uneven wear on the wheel. I'm pretty sure my father told me this 40 years ago.
+Cliff Hartle hmm...Its a good thing I don't do that often then ;)
would that be a live center holy fuck it'd drive you nuts listening to him
to each his own.
Thats a live tailstock not a live drive spur
Glad you liked it
