- building a homemade lathe is easy with this diy homemade lathe tutorial, part 2. I have built a few but they were quite technical. i thought it would be interesting to build a lathe ONLY from the parts that are already in my shop. i should have tried this sooner as i had no idea how much stuff i had laying around, nor that i actually had enough to do the job!
this lathe was born from the need to turn a few tool handles, except that i didn't have a lathe small enough to do it. obviously the little lathe is for woodturning and wood turning only. i would not attempt to turn anything other than wood on this little lathe. and actually the lathe is really only intended to do spindle turning.
I cover different aspects of homemade lathe building including the tailstock, headstock and bed.

I had watched this before when I was thinking about building my own lathe. I was having a issue with making the tail stock. I have a old bike that i think i can use the spindle to male a live center. I wanted my lathe bed raised so I could make a totally adjustable tool rest. So I took a 2X6 ripped it down the center and made rails for the tail stock . Then I found some old bed rails and mounted them on the 2X6 pieces that were ripped down the center. This serves a two fold purpose stregth/ rigidity, and something smooth for the tail stock to slide on. Great video
+Howard Yarborough thanks, I'm glad you liked it and that it was inspiration for you own lathe!! That is the best part about sharing ideas. I definitely think think you can use a standard hub, I just happened to have a custom hub in the shop. I would love to see your version....look in the video description, there is a link to my homemade lathe Facebook group.
It amazes me that you can build something out of nothing! Great work
+Raquel Rencher well, you know, I've been doing things like this for a long time!
WOW! this video has almost 6000 views! i'm not sure why this one, of all the others has attracted so much attention, thanks to all of you! part 5 will be coming this weekend.
+Ray Pena as of today this video has had 30,000 views!! holy crap! this is the first one of my videos to have this kind of viewership!
Nice progress!
+Willem Kossen thanks, I should have part 3 edited and up by tomorrow.
hi Ray, just wanted you to know that I finally figured out how to travel through diamondstatemachining and your plans are there. I downloaded it so everything is cool.
many thanks
+zetus kid glad you figured it out! I wasn't sure how to explain that it was on the page, you just need to look for it. Have fun and let me know if you build it.
good job !!!...BRAVO !
+Κώστας Μπουρούνης thanks!
+Κώστας Μπουρούνης be sure to checkout parts 1 and 3. i'm working of part 4 right now!
already did it !!...waiting for part 4 !!...good job man ...go ahead !!
+Κώστας Μπουρούνης thanks!
Ray- did you know you have a strong resemblance to Marco Rubio??? Keep up the good work!
you are the second to say that i look like him.... my wife wishes my bank account resembled his (yes she actually said that)
nice sir
+Amir Byaz thank you very much, be sure to check part four to see it running! gland you enjoyed it.
How rigid this UCP spherical bearing under load ? I see you spindle axe so thin, do you feel some workpiece floating on cutting ?
+Dmitry Ponyatov everything worked great. If you haven't seen part 1, I discuss the reason for the lathe and some of the decision process. Thus lathe cost me $0 since it was put together only from the items I had available. If you look for part 5, it shows a project, start to finish

Which type of bearing is used?
Pillow block on the headstock, bicycle wheel on the tailstock
Bad idea to hold on workpiece by hands using round cutter -- make some wooden vise to hold it
+Dmitry Ponyatov that cutter actually puts all the load in one small spot, there was really no danger. Thank you for your concern though.
NEVER,,, Hold ENEY THING WITH YOUR HAND WHEN USING POWER EQUOPMENT.
Gotta die of something
