    Sorry for the second late rant here but I must say I agree 💯 with you on the record store analysis. I spent 12 yrs in retail both as a sales person and a sales manager starting in the 90's. The store sold audio equipment and records/cd's which can be very competitive and tough to remain profitable and successful. Too many record store owners do not understand or appreciate customer loyalty versus as you mentioned immediate profit. There was always a mantra we had in sales and it was "Never let money walk" , meaning work to come to a happy or mutual price and take the deal. If a customer walks they will spend the same $$ or more now at a competitive store to satisfy their heed to buy that item.... period, every time. Put the money in your till even if it doesn't have much or any profit, other sales will take care of the rest. Thx Jonathan.

      I can't understand these shop owners either. Who wouldn't want customer who recommended your place, came back once a month, and left with a smile on their faces?

    Thanks David, Haydn's oratorio, 'The Creation' is a great piece of art. The opening, 'Representation of Chaos' sounds very modern, even though it was composed in 1798, it conjures up an image of the Big Bang, an explosion on vinyl, and he wrote 104 syphonies, what a talent.

      I'm definitely going to check that out Nick. There's a chance I might have a vinyl copy in my classical overflow (I bought a couple of big collections years ago, and am still working through them).

    May Blitz is a cool album, I discovered it about 15 years ago when I was digging deep into proto-metal. I need to give it a spin, been many years. Thanks for the Hooky review -- I didn't know he did a JD set -- sounds worth checking out. My big show last week was Judas Priest. Halford's range at 70+ is unbelievable, and he had more costume changes than Beyonce and Celine combined. Awesome.
    Sounds like you probably got a great deal on those Zu Druids used. I imagine you're one of the few across the pond to own them since I don't think the Utah based company has distribution overseas. Very happy with my Omen Dirty Weekend II, matches well with my tiny NAD D3020 v2.

    • @davidatkinson-lifematters4826
      @davidatkinson-lifematters4826  23 дня назад

      Yes, those Zu Druids appear to be pretty rare over here. I bought them off a dealer, who was a lovely old guy who demo'd an even better system at his home. Incredible sounding system. Big room though, and one I can't replicate here. Regardless, the Druids are lovely, if a bit monolithic.
      I was never a big fan of Judas Priest, but Halford is a great character and it's immensely impressive that his vocal range is still so strong. It must be the luck of the draw to reach 'old age' and still have great pipes. Most see their voices fall to pieces!

    Hi Dave! Just tried streaming May Blitz! I love it! Right up my alley. I have a couple David Frisell albums but somehow Charles Lloyd has evaded me, until now. I always say to myself that I need to try more classical music, but I never seem to know where to start. Madeline Rust is new to me. I loved Mazzy Starr, so will be checking that out. I enjoyed the mini business case study at the 14 minute mark. Your local shop sounds lousy unfortunately. Chris’s store sounded fabulous by comparison. Agreed with your summary of New Order, though I loved it in my club days. Still fun though! The concert sounds pretty good. ✌️

      @davidatkinson-lifematters4826  24 дня назад

      Hi Mike, The Madeline Rust have probably sunk without trace now, but their style - a bit Mazzy Star, a bit Cowboy Junkies, but with a dark, gothic, distortion style are/were pretty good. Like a lot of bands though, they try hard, but with (very) limited success. As for classical music, it's a minefield. I would start with a CD compilation, listen hard, see what you prefer, and then explore that seam more deeply. If your enjoyment comes casual listening of the whole range of styles, you'll never get that deeper appreciation and the experience will be like listening to pleasant muzak.

    Morning David, well as a Canadian I have not heard of that group u showed but I recall seeing the cover. Reminds me of a woman my brother once dated 😜. I will definitely be on the lookout for Peter Hook and the Light as I always considered Peter as the strongest and most stand out member of N.O. His bass playing was so front and center in their music, amazing & forceful for sure. I was going to suggest for you to listen to Carmana Burana (I think thats the correct spelling) which you probably know is Coral Chamber music. For me it is extremely dramatic and if listening in the dark can be quite scary and unnerving. That Prince album is very good, I managed to buy the deluxe box set of it last yr for cheap, love it. I agree with you on his career. Cheers 🍻

      Cheers Jonathan. On the Carmina Burana front, I'm waiting for a friend to confirm he's nabbed us tickets for a performance at The Royal Albert Hall next autumn. As for Hooky, I was well-impressed. I saw New Order live in the early 80s, but was too drunk to notice anything more than pulsating rhythms! Hooky himself has great charisma, and a stand-out in the original band.

    Living in a relatively poor area of South Yorkshire you would think that the local second hand record and hifi shop would have reasonable prices but that’s not the case. Only been in there a couple of times and he must have thought that I was a mug. We had just been to our local Curry’s for a turntable for my son and thought that we would have a look at the second hand shop as well. I like to think that I research things well before I buy so was well aware of the new prices. We had spotted an Audio Technica turntable for a couple of hundred pounds in Curry’s and he had a second hand one for sale. I thought that his may have been cheaper but in fact he wanted double the new price! He had a few second hand amps, nothing special but wanted almost £400 for one that could be had on eBay for about £75. I looked at his Ariston turntable that a few sellers had for under £300 on eBay but he wanted £700. It wasn’t even in decent condition. I checked out his records and for bog standard stuff by Queen and Barclay James Harvest he wanted £40 each. Needless to say we didn’t buy anything. It’s a shame really as I buy loads of records each month and he could have made a good customer out of me if he hadn’t been so greedy.

    Your Silent Face is my favourite New Order song, too. I have watched many clips of Peter Hook and even some complete live shows. Whenever he sings, he stops playing bass. He only plays bass when he is not singing. Did you notice that?

    • @davidatkinson-lifematters4826
      @davidatkinson-lifematters4826  24 дня назад

      Yes I did Brian. I've heard it said that playing bass AND singing is a tough gig for a musician. It was a nice change to see two bass players on stage at the same time on Friday. When they were playing in unison, it was characteristically THUNDEROUS!

    Hey David. Some nice Charles Lloyd finds. I agree with your sentiments about the maximumalist record stores. Seems like they are satisfied with curating a record museum. You have to wonder how they cover their rent. Each square foot of the store costs them. Cheers mate.

      Hi Jack, I suspect some of these shop owners aren't that great at meeting new people and negotiating to acquire collections for resale. They leave their shop stock kind of static and squeeze every penny out of every sale.

  • @Harrispilton22
    @Harrispilton22 24 дня назад

    I'm going to let the New Order comment slide 😅 One of the best gigs I ever saw was Peter Hook doing 'Low Life' & 'Brotherhood' I've seen New Order twice recently, very lukewarm. Yeah a shop near me offers 3 for £15.00 on £7.00 pound albums. Good strategy

    I can now watch your videos and shout “Been there” at the tv ! Glad you enjoyed Peter Hook - and thanks for the sausage sandwich! Nice finds and agree with you on Prince - glad you didn’t name the shop in case we go back ! Agree with you all the way - hence I only brought one album that day ! (Although it was a good one !) - I’d have brought a few more if they’d been 2 for £10 instead of £7 each - catch up soon 👍🫡🇬🇧
