    Here in Denmark we have an island (Læsø) where polyandry was the norm in the 19 century. Women would have two husbands, a summer husband and a winter husband. The woman would tend to the farm and the husbands would be fishers. So one husband would always be out fishing and one would always be home helping on the farm. It was a matriarchy, where the woman would inherit the land, because you always know who the mother is. It was not religious, it was practical.

    • @monus782
      @monus782 2 года назад +52

      That was basically me in my fundie phase, especially with the whole "going to hell for rubbing one out" thing that I really believed in as I ended up going to therapy just for that (only to be told that it was just my anxiety, at the time I didn't believe them but in the end they were right).
      In my experience for some going to heaven is the only thing that really matters so they'll act accordingly to the point of neglecting most things of this life (at worst ignoring things like climate change) and it was one of the things supporting my sense of purpose for the longest time, when my faith in Christianity collapsed entirely over two years ago it felt that I lost everything and I suspect that as part of my trauma my deconversion was one the things that caused my suicidal thoughts as I had nothing left to look forward to and nothing left to live for (when that happened though I thought it was because of something else, I didn't realize I may have suffered from religious trauma until recently as I really don't recall ever being depressed while I was still in) so I'm just glad to be still here.
      I'm still trying to recover from that as sometimes I ask myself what's the point to any of this if this life is all there is, again I put so much of my purpose into that religion for most of my life that I don't know what to replace it with and I feel for others who left fundie communities who have felt similarly. Maybe this is learned helplessness as for most of my life I was told scripted answers to life and what to do but now I’m all on my own to answer the questions (and I'm sometimes reminded of Karl Marx's famous, or infamous, quote about religion being the opium of the masses as for some this life is so shit the only thing they can look forward to is the next one).
      Thank you for listening to my TED rant.

Although it`s about mormonism I find it translates very well to other strict christian groups too. @@kajika6226 I was of the traditionalist kind of Catholic (the guys who still do the Mass in Latin and act like Vatican II never happened) through my college years until my deconversion and I tend to think that was the logical conclusion to my own conservative upbringing (the kind that says to obey the Church in everything it says and as a result I had nothing but contempt for Catholics who I perceived to be more liberal or "cafeteria" about it, especially when it came to abortion and LGBT+ rights) and although I look at my past with some fondness and nostalgia I look at the rest with bitterness as I suppressed my sexuality for nothing (while being a pius dipshit for around 8 years) and I wonder if any of this would've happened had I been raised in a more secular household, the worst part is that I can't come out especially to my father as he still has some far right links within the Church.
      As I was telling a friend recently talking about the Latin Mass feels like talking about an ex and for a while I really thought that perhaps God wanted me to be a priest or a monk (like it was for many of my former parish friends, I think that fueled my depression when that was no longer possible), for that I didn't date during those college years and I sometimes feel like regretting that (especially as I just turned 27) while feeling this is one of the things I'm behind socially (the other being not having many interests besides theology and liturgy). How ironic that during those years I had more in common with the other fundies I despised (especially Baptists and other Evangelicals, I remember that one time a missionary of theirs basically told me I was going to hell for being part of the wrong church and I never took him seriously) than the average American Catholic.
      That podcast has been helpful but I've been listening to Mormon Discussions more often (you might see some of my comments I've left in their videos) and I'm amazed how similar my background has been to some former Mormons I've heard from. You take care as well.

      Interesting, I’ve been watching Big Love and they portray the mainstream LDS as hating polygamy as a sin and being eager to turn in plural wives to the cops. But I’ve known a lot of LDS folks irl and I’ve never heard them express any sort of contempt towards plural marriage. So I’m guessing Big Love hyped up the mainstream LDS anti-polygamy stance for the drama.

    • @pansprayers
      @pansprayers 2 года назад +26

      @@Forestfreud it's a weird thing, TBH. I've heard venom, sympathy and apathy from my husband's (exMormon, from a founding family) family. One turned in a family they suspected for practicing polygamy (they weren't, but snitching culture is like that) into the Ward Bishop, and almost had them excommunicated - the family moved. Sympathy for the kids of a very obvious family (IF the state were to prosecute, then what happens to the 43 kids?), and venom for the parents. It's a gammet, TBH, not helped in the slightest bit by the fact that the LDS Church has gone out of their way to bury and rewrite their own history repeatedly.

      Yes, thank you for mentioning this! As a long time secular polyam person (well, ethical non-monogamous relationship anarchist, to be precise 😁), this frustrates me soooo much. Egalitarian polyamory (which may or may not involve marriage or even cohabitation) and is based (ideally) on the preference of each person to have multiple intimate/loving relationships, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, with full consent, agency and autonomy of all is a far cry from religious polygyny. That involves only one person in the group being non-monogamous, is strictly gender divided (the wives are all monogamous to the single husband, and only men can engage in multiple romantic/sexual relationships), and is of course dictated by religion, creating conditions where people who might otherwise not wish to be in that kind of relationship feel compelled to by the dictates of their faith. Not remotely the same thing.

      And the reason why people might get into poly relationships is usually quite different to what these polygamists families do it for.
      In my fundie phase I already had heard of this but I took it as just another boogeyman and another potential consequence to allowing marriage equality, for the longest time I couldn’t tell the difference between a consensual poly relationship and an old fashioned polygamist family like the one featured in this show.

    Read Irene Spencer's book, "Shattered Dreams: My Life as a Polygamist's Wife" if you can find it. She was one of several wives of an FLDS community in Mexico and finally left polygamy. Men are supposed to have multiple wives so the children they have will be part of the husband's level in heaven. Her logical point was aren't the sons supposed to get married and build their own level of glory in heaven? Then how are they supposed to be part of their father's level? She write amazingly about the primitive conditions, the loneliness, the jealousy -- it was not a happy situation. It taught me so much about FLDS and the polygamy mindset. Great book.

    My relationship foundation is happiness and bettering each other's lives (we compliment each other) but we specifically also revolve around our bond over visual arts and creative expression. The three of us are talented and I'm so happy to share a life with such creative and challenging people. We all have a different preferred medium (block print, sequential art, and illustration) and we all have different artist's statements. It's nice that we all have our own voice within the same genre we're all so passionate about.

They seemed to struggle more with jealousy and insecurity than they do now, and they mentioned quite a bit of bullying. It also kind of seemed like Meri introduced Robyn to their husband because she was lonely and being ostracized by the other 2 wives. What ended up collapsing my faith in Christianity altogether was not the Bible itself but rejecting church doctrines attributed to it (after reading doctrinal documents my church has churned out through the centuries) and they were mainly the Fall of Adam and Original Sin (which is ironic as the latter is never mentioned explicitly like the Trinity) while figuring out that without them most of the theology makes no sense, in this regard I feel that I had my own equivalent to reading the CES Letter.

    Joseph Smith had actually been secretly practicing polygamy for over 10 years before he received this “revelation” in 1843 which was pretty much just to sway his first wife Emma into supporting his polygamy, telling her she would be condemned in heaven if she didn’t allow it. By the time he recorded this plural marriage “revelation” in 1843, he had already spiritually married over a dozen women in secret. He spiritually married or “sealed” himself to over 30 women total, one as young as 14 years old. I grew up in mainstream Mormonism and never knew Joseph Smith was even a polygamist, let alone married over 30 women, some underage at the time. The Church doesn’t teach it’s members even a shred of truth about its own history. Don’t even get me started on the rock and the hat….

    • @Cupcakelover748
      @Cupcakelover748 2 года назад +20

      So! The rock and the hat. It has to do with how Joseph Smith claimed he translated the Book of Mormon. He said that he was led to a hill by God and found gold plates buried in this hill - the Book of Mormon, but it wasn’t in English obviously. The church now portrays that Joseph would use a friend as his scribe to write for him as he translated this ancient text - and that he gained these new magical translating powers with the help of the Spirit. There is no proof he ever actually found gold plates, obviously. There are witness testimonies that the church uses to back up their claims that other people like friends of Joseph saw the gold plates so the plates must be real - but they actually said they saw them with their “spiritual eye” not really in person. He claimed later that God took the plates off the earth after he was done with translating the Book of Mormon -how convenient! Nothing to prove they ever existed.
      Basically, the church portrays that he had these gold plates on a table, with a cloth separating him from his scribe (they were too “sacred” for most people to even see) and he would read the ancient text on these plates and word for word translate in English out loud and his scribe would write down his translation - thus, the Book of Mormon.
      But, how he ACTUALLY claimed to translate is just plain weird and the church continues to try to cover it up with a better sounding story. He claimed he would put a plain rock into a hat, and stick his head into the hat, and he claimed that the words from the plates would appear on rock, magically. There were times that these plates wouldn’t even be in the room when he was translating - after all, why would he even need the plates in the first place if he used a rock inside a hat to have to translate?
      It’s weird, basically - and if members of the church knew the actual history of what witnesses said and what Joseph Smith claimed instead of what the church tries to portray, I don’t think there would be as many Mormons as there are now. Also, the Book of Mormon is very long and the gold plates would have been too heavy for him to carry himself. It’s just silly. He was a weird dude and the church tries to make him sound like Jesus.
