+Campech me 2 omg omg omg
Damn I just realized I just bought a 10 + year old game and I'm absolutely addicted to it like nothing ever before.
How long into the game until I get nuke threats from Gandhi?
Lmao
LOL
"I will spread peace... BY FORCE"
Good to know, that little bastard befriends me all the time. I knew something was up!
Ausar0 You know the old Roman proverb "Si vis pacem pax para bellum" in the old sense.
How to play Civ V correctly:
Step 1. Be Venice (wait don't leave it gets good)
Step 2. Build yo trade routes (preferably sea based)
Step 3. Remain neutral as possible with other civs, while allying every city state possible
Step 4. Once you're drowning in cash, pay civs to go to war with each other (fund the probable losing party, if possible)
Step 5. Lol
Step 6. Become the host of the W.C.
step 7. Become the blind, rich, hilariously politically manipulative world leader
Ok honestly I feel like CIV V isn't even fun anymore after discovering this strategy. Now I mostly just play EU4
+Daniel Turnquist how about you use a new strategy lmao
+Daniel Turnquist Damn, 4 months passed
+Daniel Turnquist yes just yasss
+Daniel Turnquist So basically, become Israel?

O w O my god
k? its a usefull video i watched full
@@aspirewot8408 not everybody expects a 1 hour + video for a noob guide was more usefull for me to just play single player
Hey Rob I just wanted to say you have done an excellent job with this tutorial video. You explained the complexities of the game eloquently. Because of this I'm really sad to see that you aren't making videos anymore. I would have loved to see an LP of Civ 5 with your commentary. I hope you start making videos again :)
thank you for the compliments! im also sad that im not making videos anymore, but actually i might be streaming final fantasy 14 soon on twitch... very casually of course. we'll see!
+BlameRobVideos where r u??
+BlameRobVideos I know its been years but I completely agree with this comment! I hope you make videos again in the future!
I second this
I love how casually he reacts to finding Genghis Khan in the woods.
I love how he casually took horses from them lol.
That's Civ for you.
*meets Genghis Khan* "Oh, hello there, mate."
*meets Gandhi* "Run! Run, before he nukes us!"
to be fair level 1 Ghenghis Khan isn't really a threat... if this was higher difficulty running into him, Atilla or Nobu very early on will force you to go on the defensive very early.
It's a shame that some viewers on here are complaining about drinking noises etc. on this video, when BlameRobVideos has spent a whole hour and 22 minutes of his own time trying to help new Civilization players. There really are some ungrateful little shits on this planet, who take everything, complain about it, yet give nothing back apart from arsy little moans. This video has really helped me get into Civilization, and I don't bemoan the guy for taking a couple of drinks during that time.

Same here man was bothering me so much couldn't figure out who was messaging me
i just figured that it was from the video
5:22 took me 10 minutes to figure out it wasnt my steam.
+Prins073 DAMN MIND TRICKS!
(Took me a few seconds - but only because this happened before :
+Prins073 yep
same :D but then I realized I was offline
Fuck I have been trying to figure out who was messaging me.

Thank you! I'm just ten minutes in, but I've already picked up so much from this video.
Glad it helped!
Kevin J
it kinda just turns into a play through after 20:00
Just want to say that as a new player, this tutorial was very very helpful. It's basic but you cover more advanced topics as you go along. Thanks
I bought the game today for 12 dollars. this was very useful!!!
Same!
someone who sucks at games same, so happy about it
Great video, ive been thinking about getting back into Civ and this video shows off alot of different parts I didn't really know about. Thanks :D
"is there anything else I want to go over" 5:05
...1:22:47 video
RNDMMN 😂😂😂
As a total beginner at Civ, I found this tutorial SO helpful! Great for understanding the basics in what can be quite a complicated game :D Thanks!!
You did A hell of a great job explaining the game! At first I was just spamming units and never took notice on influence and citizens and just go to war like any RTS game lol. But you actually got to be clever and capture resources from the enemy. It is already 2015 but I still wish you good health with your sore throat. 3+ HP!!
Thank you!!
I'm only 5 mins in but I have already got more useful info out of this video than watching my friends play this for hours and playing through the tutorials myself. If this carries on I'll actually be able to play the game! Thanks for a great vid
One thing that works really well for me is the point defense system. That means that you build forts/citadels on strategic points like hills overlooking narrow passage ways or on the tip of a landmass. Then you place an artillery unit inside it. What this does is it precludes opponents from wanting to attack from those directions because to do so would cause them to lose many men. Part of what goes into this is where you build your cities. Location location location. It is everything. You can build your capitol region (your capitol and cities that directly surround it. I.e. The birthplace of your civilization) either in easily defended regions like around the Mediterranean and where the real world city of Istanbul is. Another great area is the south east US and the Caribbean area. That place makes a great natural harbor. So build cities at the necessary places and build forts on the Caribbean islands and you have a fortress harbor.
Around 5:30 I had to turn off fullscreen and see if I got a message. lol
lmao, same thing here.
haha, same!
Can't wait to watch this video and play the game! The complete edition is on sale for 13 dollars on steam, which is usually a 150 dollar price tag!!
hot pants actually it was on 50 euro before (dont know how much dollar, since it already was decreased by 67 percent)
Walmart was $20.00 but the last version is $50.00
Wow, mate...
This tutorial was amazing!.. Thank you very much for producing it :)
Also - could you make a sequel to this with an advanced tutorial?
Ten years later and this video is still really helpful
Thanks, Rob! I've never played a Civ game before, but have been curious to try out Civ 5 because everyone says it's so great. I was hesitant, though, because the steep learning curve was a bit intimidating. Your video made the basics very clear, and helped me make up my mind to get the game! Very helpful Let's Play.
Just got this game and it seemed overwhelmingly complicated but after watching this, it's made it actually quite easy to grasp! Entertaining and informative video, thank you!
Not a big fan of you saying, "There's a better way to do this, but for the purposes of the video I'm just gonna do it this way," and then you don't bother explaining what the "better" way would be. Aside from that, I learned a lot. Great tutorial!
Perhaps because this is for beginners and the "better way" may be more complicated and for more advanced players? Just a thought.
I doubt it. That's pretty senseless, don't you think? Kinda like eating pizza without the cheese, just because it's easier to not add the cheese? If there's a good way of doing something, why not show it? Why talk about it, while performing poorly? The purpose of a tutorial is to teach people how to play properly, not to leave them wondering what the "better" methods are. :)
Strype13 No, I don't think so.
I understand your point, but I still see it that way. It's a tutorial for beginners, and the "better way" may be difficult or take more skill, and would probably end up confusing some people. I've seen tutorials for things that are supposed to be for beginners and they showed right after "better ways" to do them and I ended up confused, so I think this tutorial was fine. If I wanted a better way I think I'd play the game, and figure out a better way once I understood the game properly. After all, it's a strategy game! The beauty in them is to create your own strategies :-)
Strype13 In the case of this game, your cheese metaphor is wrong. The 'better way' requires a lot more time to do, because you have to build different units etc. especially in harder difficulties. So it's like saying, "I could make this pizza now, or I could go milk a cow, process the milk, turn it into cheese, let the cheese mature for six months, then grate the cheese, then cook my pizza with cheese on it... or I could show you how to make pizza without cheese for the purposes of this video, so you don't have to wait six months for the cheese to be made."
Civilization V complete bundle is like, £90 off. I don't know anything about the game(hence why I'm watching this) but god damn, I'm getting that fucking bundle.
one of the best Tutorial on youtube ...I was watching so many tutorial video but they just skipped all the imprtant things, this tut was very helpful and detailed
I got this as a gift from a friend and haven't played Civ since childhood. This is effing scary, so THANK YOU SO MUCH:
bought this game on stean for 7 bucks, started a game and just sat there confiused.
cheers for this tutorial man i was going off the basis off playing the AOE series but this is was more in depth.
Just bought this game too for $7 xD

Wow finally finished this , so proud of myself right now
Excellent guide and video! I suspected I was, but now I can confirm I was a total noob in my first play through xD.
+JohnWKly You and me both lol
Civilization VI was just announced!
One of the best tutorials i've ever seen, well done, thank you
Agreed
I remember playing the original Civilization in the early 90's... Just bought Civ V from Steam and am downloading now. Looking forward to seeing how much the game has evolved.
Thanks for the video. I have just bought Civ 5 having never played any other Civilization game before and found this really useful to help get started.
Preparing for pka plays :)
Same here
I really hope they play Civilization instead of L4D.. I'm so sick of L4D...
Jared Salas sadly i doubt they will at the end of pka they said L4D2 or Borderlands :(
Yep me too
haha... Fuck Kyle :)
Civ V is on sale for 75 percent off winter sale 2015
+Fin M Probably only people watching this now is because of the sale tho. ;P
+Alex Alba That's why I'm watching it. :D
+Glover Yep I planing if I should buy it!
lol Sid Meier's Civilization V: Complete is 90% off right now
normally 150 dollars now 12 dollars
Yep
You're Awesome!! Can't thank you enough for breaking it all down. I've always played this game without knowing what the hell I'm doing haha. Now I'll be able to play with a clear understanding. Your teaching style is great. Thanks!
Back in the Civ 3 days, we called ruins "Goody Huts"
A co-worker introduced me to the very first Civilization back in the 90's. I was hooked. Much later I bought Civilization: Test of Time which a lot of people hated but I enjoyed for the variety. I eventually got to the point where I started a game and saved it immediately, then enabled the cheat mode to reveal the whole world.
It was pointless to continue if I was stuck on a tiny island. If on a decent landmass, I'd turn on the grid and plan out where to build cities to both control narrow areas (like an isthmus) and simultaneously occupy as much territory as possible while not overlapping city areas if possible. Once I'd planned and memorized what to do, I'd kill the game and re-start from the saved one and plant my first city at the planned location closest to the starting settler, and then build from there.
The first thing I always built was a temple so I wouldn't have to worry about unhappy citizens. As soon as I could produce a second military unit, it went off scouting to expose the map where I planned to go. As soon as the first city reached about 3 in size, I'd build another settler to go plant the second city while building a road along the way. Thus I'd alternate, military and settlers, building roads and planting cities. At size 6, the next settler would then set about improving every cell within its city's control, building roads, irrigation, mines, etc
The first Wonder of the World I always worked for was the Library of Alexandria which gave me any science learned by other unseen civilizations. Later was Leonardo's workshop, I think, which automatically upgraded units based on technology learned. In this way I systematically built up my empires and was usually successful in reaching Alpha Centauri at the end, which was preferable to having to go through the expense of fighting wars with everyone else.
35:20 No, you most certainly do not want Genghis Khan getting horses before you do.
I don't understand why other leaders get mad when I attack someone, I can't win every game via science/culture..
It is a natural reaction even in the real world. Other leaders might be looking to get a piece of the loot for themselves or they might be friends of the nation you attacked. Even more commonly other leaders are just looking for an excuse to gang up and hit you. Something like the modern day UN.
Steam alerts made me look!
I just got gifted Civ V and really have no idea where to start so thanks for the great tutorial! I'm a little overwhelmed right now but it seems like a really awesome game
Bought this game yesterday, started playing at 9 PM and the next time I looked the clock it was 4 AM... Great video it helped a lot btw.
Just got the complete edition for £8.74
TheWeekendGeek where from
Teeekuuu1 humble bundle store
TheWeekendGeek same
TheWeekendGeek i just got it for free from piratebay :P
Raymond Benjamins Why waste money when you can get it for free? They get more than enough money by releasing each game.
Watched this video because I got Civ 5 for Christmas. I see it's not all that different from past versions, but it was nice to have a refresher. Question: What happened to the archers you had been using to attack Barbarians? Why did you include them when you attacked Ghengis Khan?
i dont remember what happened to my archers that were attacking barbarians :)
i probably brought archers over to help with the attack because taking a town is usually really difficult and requires lots of units
I think I'm too stupid to play this game... :D
It's ok
I'm like a god at this game I like playing as bismark
Because of the panzer
Mega late, but try UnCiv its easier and its alike
When you said Great General, Great Engineer and Great Scientist I couldn't help immediately thinking of the Soldier, Engineer and Medic from TF2. I just pictured them in my mind.
Been on the fence but this video and the fact it is on sale on Steam today means I'm taking the plunge. Excellent video Sir
Oh my god, I keep thinking someone is messaging me on Steam and then I'm severely disappointed.
Me too! Then I remembered I have no friends and cried.
Same and im on my phone....
R.I.P. your throat. You will be remembered.
Did someone say steam sale?
Just went on steams summer sale. 75% off
The complete edition is 92% off
i just bought the complete for 9$ which is nice considering its usualy 120$
Same! But now I have no idea what the fuck I'm doing
+Chewie_ I probably won't ever play it, but at that price how couldn't I buy it! DAMN YOU GABEN!
The last 30 minutes or so felt pretty rushed, but it's a good tutorial, I've already watched almost 6 hours worth of tutorials, just to cover those basics. Civ is the kind of game I always stop playing after 10 minutes, because everything looks so complex. I love reading books, but I freaking hate reading guides/tutorials, so videos like these are the best way to go for someone like me, thanks a lot.
I have watched nearly all guides to this game and can 100% say that this is the best, the only one that really teaches a complete ffing noob like me what to do. I nearly gave up on this game after watching hundreds of noob guides (Ive never played a turn based before). iThen I stumbled across this video. Thanks so much mate subbed n liked n rang ya bell
Open borders? That's un-american
America? That's un-amurican.
+directorbeau Spend money on something that isnt military
Thats un-American
Allusion Doze were not in space were on earth buddy
+Allusion Doze Look I am American and as patriotic as they come, I served in the Marine Corps, but I also have enough of a brain to know the truth. The reason we have the things you listed is nowadays because of one single reason. This reason is called the US H-1B Visa. Literally less than 1% and pretty much 0% of the top jobs are held by American born people. We literally import the most brilliant minds from across the globe to have things like science here as we are simply in a word or two.... Too stupid.
Andrew West so all the science and eveything is not by American people you are saying?? So does that mean most American troops are not American born
"This video is to show a new player just enough for the basics," *looks at video length*, well then
Great tutorial on Civi 5 ...it helped a lot thanks
Thank you so much for this video. I just bought Civ 5, played the tutorials, and was still lost. I now feel like I actually know how to play the game!
im glad it helped!
Incredibly helpful, even nearly 5 years later. Convinced me to buy the complete edition. Cheers brother!
Just wait until you meet Gandhi...
Question. If I got the god and kings game, thats just the expansion, I'd still need to buy Civ 5? right?
Sid Meier's Civilization V: Complete Edition is like 70% or 75% off on steam right now so you can get for $12.50 instead of $50.
Just got the full game 20 min ago and it's downloading and I've always been fond of strategy games and hoping I get my money's worth out of it (most likely will)
Kevin Flynn is it worth it to get the complete edition compared to just the base game? all those dlc, i don't think i'll even play half of em...
I'm not really sure to be honest, I just started playing it today. I decided to get the full package because even if I don't play them right now, there might be a chance in the future that I will want to and will be happy I bought it all at once. Hope this helps :)
Kevin Flynn yeah. it's probably a better idea to buy them all when it's quarter of the price than buy them one by one when you feel like it. though there are also a whole load of other games on sale as well which i wanna buy and i'm on a tight budget. ah the joys of steam...
oh no, i've just decided to buy a game today, but looks like the sale is over :( :)
My start build for most of the time is Monument to get that culture going asap, scout will follow this. Right about the time your scout is finished pottery should also be done which means you can grab shrine. From shrine you can grab the worker and from there its all up to you. Pottery/Monument first turn follow that up with Scout/Shrine. The plus 1 to Faith will help you grab religion fairly quickly which of course will lead to bonuses like happiness and production.
I was thinking about trying the Civ games for a long time now but was always unsure about how I would fare at it due it looking so complicated. This video helped a lot with helping me learn the basics of the game and gain the confidence to try it. Thank you for your comprehensive tutorial.
"Just the basics" Makes hour and twenty-two minute video. Now you know how complicated this game is.
dude this is very helpful thank you
I'm not sure if i'm playing right, but I started with the incas and took over the whole map in a few hours. It's like the ai is set to UN mode. All the leaders were very angry with me. I nuked them all and took over. It was only my 2nd time ever playing the game.
Well, three hours could be any amount turns. I don't know how many turns you can manage in three hours, but okay. What difficulty was this?
MrRollercoasterZ I was more than 3 hours maybe by 10X. I was expecting huge wars, but all I got was UN like threats. It was set to normal difficulty.
metcard
What exactly is this "normal" difficulty? There is quite plenty to choose from.
Ahahahahhahaha 'i nuked them all'
*****
Beating the game on second try on Prince level if one heck of an achievement. I could never ever do that. Thumbs up for that.
I've been playing this game for 20 hours now, it is by far the best game I've ever played. This video really helped me grip the basics and even learn some things I never knew. So thanks for the video its been a real help! :D
A friend of mine recently told me about this game and how it's strategy and turned based. I've never played a game like this before so I knew I'd have trouble. Your video was very informative and I think I'm gonna buy the game now! Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!!
Dat ain't no beaker, dat an erlenmeyer flask yo
Didn't know that erlenmeyer was an english word too. Always called it a lab bottle if I had to in English.
Hey, really good tutorial! I really think you made it clear for people how to play the game from scratch. I am uploading a few civilization v gameplay too and would really appreciate if you checked it out. Keep up the good work dude, I really like your civilization gameplay!
I checked my steam so many times god dammit haha, good video.
Got this game yesterday. I already knew the basics since I played it on my friend's PC. It's such a fun game. Definitely worth a try for anyone who likes strategy games
The complete edition is now just 20 euros on steam (10 yesterday, when I got mine) instead of the usual 40. The standard is 15 euros now.
This video really helped me. This game is huge! Played 4 hours today and I feel like I've not even scratched the surface of it.
Really useful. thanks
How did you run into Genghis Khan if you are in the US?
Daniel Iziyaiv Oh I didn't know that. I knew it wasn't actual history judging by George Washington leading the American empire in 4000 BC but I did think they would start out in their actual locations.
So why did you ask it, for Gods sake.
Daniel Iziyaiv Ask for what? I asked why he ran into Genghis Khan in what I thought was the East Coast but you answered it.
Aldo Solares I knew it wasn't actual history but like I said I thought they would live in their real life areas-otherwise what is the point of using real empires-why not just use the Elf empire or the Dark Samurais or the Magic Paladins or some other made up empire.
Daniel Iziyaiv I am not trying to "get out of this" or "save myself" just clarifying something about a game I have NEVER PLAYED.
5:21 anyone checked their steam account for any invites? ahahahahah i was watching it full screen and had to minimize it ahahahah :)
I was going to check then I remembered I have no friends
lol I did then I remembered steam isnt running twice
was going to but then i remember im not a sound notification peasant
Finally! I can actually play Civ 5 without being totally confused as to what was happening.
Should have watched this ages ago...
also to add to Edwin Sweeps comment, scouts and workers will sometimes move near barbarians or hostile territories and will be easily taken over or killed (this becomes very apparent on higher difficulties and when you have the ability to travel over water, scouts love dying to barbarian ships). Early on I like to control some production, after a while unless there's something you need to focus on let your workers automate.
The complete edition is off 92% right now!
Bought it a few days ago and have absolutely no regrets! Although...my social life is gone.
Tonny van den Berg This would be the case for me too if i were not already hooked on Overwatch.
I have nver played turn based games,I wanted to ask is this game good and worth.
Yes, Over 350 hours here, well worth it.
If you have good friends that play it, you will have countless hours of gameplay. I play with over 7 other friends I personally know and its a huge time waster. If your gonna buy this game for multiplayer prepare for long hour gaming. Don't freak out about the time though, the cool thing about civ is that if one person has to get off, one of you can save where your at and continue the game at a later day.
Well it looks too hard,I am used to strategis like Rise of Nations if you heard of her.None of my friends are intrested in turn based strategy but I would like to give it a shot and maybe try it?
The easiest difficulty is very easy to pick up. I came from the same abckground you did, palying no strategy games, only fps games. I know play at king/emporer level and continue to improve my play. The ingame tutorial is guide and there are advisors to guide you in your games.
thanks for the info
Are you getting steam messages? because i keep checking my steam to seemessages but there isnt any
Same. lol.
0:57:43 Final Fantady Victory Fanfare! LOL great video, I recently got the game but it's certainly very complicated with lots to learn.
I did not necessarily need this video as a tutorial, though it is very cool you did this. However i have been toying with getting this game for a while, I used to play the first civilization in the 90s and wanted to make sure the core game-play idea hadn't changed to much. After watching half an hour of your video i have decided i MUST have this, It is the type of time sink game ive been looking for. Thank you!
So if i was to play with mates do we take it in turns to play?
You all have your turn at the same time once everyone has clicked "next turn" it will go to the next turn.
oh okay cheers
Did he really create his New Yourk 1 field from the sea ???? really ????
noob here, what's wrong with that?
Maaz Mahmood He could have harbor and source of fish.
well, you know what happens to the real new york when the sea rises
dolphins start using the roads
chrmok1 Grasslands or plains can never be better choice then fish and chance for more oil. Also easy to take ? lol, you see that hill ?? he could have good coastal city on a hill with better production and good future. He just choose fast way for elephans but doesn't thought about the future.
E ridal yeah that was a bad move, but he's making a tutorial and distracted by talking :)
Why do people call it beakers!? It's a fucking conical flask....
Because beaker is the term for "conical flask."
no
Oh, my bad, got it mixed up with Erlenmeyer flask. Well, either way, nobody calls it a conical flask either.
because we're not all fucking Walter White's.
I thought it was because of Beaker the scientist muppet
57:43, whistling the FInal Fantasy battle victory song. Best part of the video.
57:44 A FF7 fan I see! Excellent game. One of my all-time favorites as well.
Thank you for the awesome guide! It helped me a lot!
I really want this game but I have a shit PC
No need for good pc in this game
yeah really even my athlon 3000 runs this lmao.
karwane1 I have a kinda new laptop but it cant run civ v, any idea what the cheapest laptop or pc i could buy is to play this game? Like an average price i should look at?
Keenan Clough Not a laptop user myself but if you are looking for a pc that runs pretty much every game at normal settings at least then for like 300-400$, assuming you let someone build it for you.
Right, thanks. I'm looking into buying one at the moment just wanted an idea of the price I should be looking at. Thanks :)
WHO KEEPS MESSAGING ME??
better then Rome total war
No shit
Indeed rome total war is nothing against civ
Empire and Napoleon Total War are A LOT better.
Sentinel Lyons rome and napoleon SUCKS you ill have to do what they written for you but in civ its your own and path and your own decisions till the end
I play both Civ and TW. If you play the campaign of TW you can still shape your own path.
Before watching this great tutorial i thought i knew a decent amount about civ. You completely changed my mind and now i actually know how to play!
Thanks a bunch
10 years later and this video is now helping me get started, haha
