      In the actual legends, after Orpheus lost his wife, he sang in such melancholy that it drove everything to tears to the point in which even inanimate objects would weep, the gods got so tired of his songs but couldn't do anything about it cause his song drove even the happiest among them to tears.
      When he failed his contract with hades to lead his wife out of the underworld without looking at her, he attempted to commit suicide in order to be with her again but every time he tried to kill himself the methods he took would always lead him to fail, poison would leap from his mouth to avoid being consumed, the rocks he would smash his head upon became soft piles of sand or mud, when he tried to drown himself the water would always push him to shore, knives to his heart would crumble to rust before ever reaching his skin, when he jumped off of cliffs the wind would safely carry him to the ground, the fires he plunged himself in would instantly reduce to cold ashes, the world did not want him to die.
      He finally died when nymph followers of Dionysus attacked him in a drunk/blind rage because they became increasingly angry that all he would ever sing about was melancholy an anger that overpowered their sorrow. They literally ripped him to shreds and when they were done they realized they had killed perhaps the greatest musician that ever lived and attempted to remove the evidence by throwing his remains in a river along with his lyre.

    This is a really interesting song because while the lyrics don’t change between Eurydice and Orpheus’ versions, the tone and the meaning is completely different depending on the perspective. Eurydice’s version is about her learning to move on from Orpheus and how to do her own thing, while Orpheus’ version is about how he can’t let go of Eurydice and how he still dearly regrets leaving her behind in the underworld after violating his contract.

First time you point out the song you mention it's beautiful but kind of sad that you feel that way about orpheus, she kinda scoffs and gives a "not everything I write is about him." I believe it's just suppose to be about her accepting her lot and moving on and learning to enjoy her eternal life now in the underworld. It's about him only in the sense that he's embodying the opposite when you first meet him, refusing to move on and still clinging to what he had in life (which I think is why his is sadder, it's a more somber realization for him rather than a freeing one for her)

    Orpheus' version and Eurydice's are starkly different because of the vocal arrangement. They both share the same accompaniment, but follow very different vocal keys and highlighted chords. Orpheus' follows the low tones that barely change in elevation aside from the few high notes that are often laced with an open, anguished rise. These all perfectly complement his sad rendition, and turn the lyrics into a tragical downward spiral.

      Lovely! I'm a music noob and have a question: If I want to sing it like Orpheus is, but I only have a tableture and/or list of chords based on Eurydice's part, is that going to cause problems? I'm not sure what a "highlighted chord" is --but should I switch some of the chords up?

    • @McPigeon753
      @McPigeon753 3 года назад +14

      @@glocrowhurst You're fine as is. I've seen this idea about different "vocal keys" echoed elsewhere and that's an overcomplication of how this was, in all likelihood, written. The melody was simply written at first with two voices harmonizing, and they were then split afterwards into two individual versions. The chords are identical between both.

    • @Amadeus2054
      @Amadeus2054 2 года назад +7

      @@McPigeon753 Yeah op writes more like a music journalist as opposed to a musician, it’s the same song with same key, same chords and same lyrics but Eurydice’s vocal lifted out and Orpheus’ vocal put in.

    • @celestialVocalist
      @celestialVocalist Год назад

      Yeah! They're singing in relative keys. Relative keys are related to each by sharing an accidental (same sharp(s)/flat(s)) in major and minor. Eurydice's melody is in F major and Orpheus's melody is in D minor. It also reflects how Eurydice has accepted death and found comfort and Orpheus laments his death and failing to bring back Eurydice from the underworld.

    • @Edward-W
      @Edward-W 2 месяца назад

      @@celestialVocalist It's not that complicated. They both sing in the same key, C minor. Neither of them are in major, and the accompaniment is the exact same for both individually and together. Orpheus just sings the lower harmony, most of the time a minor third lower. Both their individual melodies are pretty much exclusively within the notes of the natural C minor, except Orpheus has the occasional B natural instead of B flat (7th note of the scale) which is standard for minor songs because they regularly utilize the harmonic minor in chords.
      So both solo versions are just their harmonies sung separately, which is appropriate considering their story in the game. They compliment each other and Oprheus looks up to Eurydice, holding her in higher ragard than himself, as it were. Eurydice as the one who made the songs figuratively and literally gets the credit she deserves since the top main melody is sung by her and Orpheus supports her with harmonies

      In the actual myth. When he failed to save his wife he played constant sad music so powerful and full of sorrow the world wept with him. The Gods couldn’t stop him because even they were too over come by his sad music to do anything. Every time he tried to kill him self the world itself refused to let him die. Rocks smashed over his head would turn to sand, knives rusted and turned to dust before they touched him, water would carry him to shore, the wind would carry him back to the cliffs edge. He couldn’t die, because his music made the world feel too bad to let him die. I can only imagine how much Orpheus’s music is tearing Hades up inside and the grumpy god is doing his best to stone face the whole song.

      Its quite beautiful, and its made rather fitting because its sung in falsetto. I don't know too much about classical/ancient greek music, but the idea of singing in falsetto fits the character Orpheus. The tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, being about musicians, was among the most frequent greek myths to be translated into opera. Orpheus, like most leading male roles in early opera, would have been performed by castrati, nowadays either a countertenor (male operatic falsetto singer) or woman.
      The fact that Darren Korb not only holds to this tradition of the role of Orpheus but also makes it still sound incredible in a more modern musical context is incredibly impressive. Korb has my vote as best soundtrack composer out there, maybe tied with Austin Wintory.
