Love fighting this ship in the druid, short fuse ap with improved pen angles force them to bow in or run away, blocking a turret from firing. But then in cqc, the 25mm armor arms all the ap shells and they melt
can I please get some of the Ragnars that you get? I'd be VERY happy if the ones I fight were brain damaged enough to die to a Druid.
The one thing you didn't mention in regards to other DDs is the ones that rely on AP. Fighting a Druid, Elbing or even a Daring in the Ragnar can be dangerous. You have to show enough side to use both guns that they will get pens on you and their AP DPM is nothing to sneeze at. And if you only use one gun, you are halving your DPM against them.
Otherwise, very good video! I am wanting to get Ragnar, but it will take me a while to save up the steel.
Why do you have to show enough side to use both guns? I just recently beat a Druid with mostly just Ragnar's front turret, I did 30k and they did 15k, most of which was when I was radared and they got a drop on my side. And yes, that was quite scary, so you do have a point.
Of course that tactic won't work on Daring or Vampire II because they can just load HE and easily out-DPM you if you just go nose in. However, for their improved AP to be a threat, they have to load the AP in the first place, and we all know how good this playerbase is. Moreover, Ragnar turret angles are great, 23 degrees in front and 30 behind, so actually you don't have to show enough side so that they can pen, at least not consistently. Going towards the enemy DD, you can very well use both turrets and bounce a big portion of the AP in the process, even if you are not quite perfectly on the edge of the firing angle.
And finally we have Elbing, whose AP DPM isn't really that big. You can also angle against her like mentioned while still shooting both guns, and Elbing is so unwieldy that you will probably get a good damage on her and manage to get to a proper angle before she gets to shoot, not to mention that she will still get overpens as well because Ragnar isn't completely covered in 25 mm armor. Moreover, Ragnar can roughly match Elbing's HE DPM with just one turret while giving way smaller target to shoot at.
I'm not claiming that DD's with improved AP can't win or aren't a threat to Ragnar, I'm just claiming that Ragnar has a way to beat them when played right, even if they use the AP as well as they can.
I'd actually say that a ZF-6 would be potentially the most dangerous AP DD for Ragnar though, because her monstrous reload boosted AP DPM (almost 600k raw with the best sensible build) is especially good against DD's with improved belt, and it can easily do some serious damage before you can angle sufficiently. I've shredded some really scary DD's with those guns.
Marceau AP will also win against a bad Ragnar player (showing broadside), when it's like 10km range or so of course.

Very informative video about my favorite DD/CL! Ragnar does so many things with better effectiveness than its standard DD counterparts that, like you said, allows me to relax when dominating a flank or a cap. I will be working to obtain the Druid because of its own niche', but for now, Ragnar is my king of DD's!
You said basically all the things I've been trying to explain about this ship. People say she's one trick pony, she's situational, she's one-dimensional, she has lackluster DPM for a gunboat, etc. One of the worst examples is Flambass in one of his recent videos, and as I understood, he doesn't have her and is just talking on assumptions. But all of those assumptions couldn't be further from the truth.
One trick pony? How's dealing with DD's like Småland would and then retreating to a safer distance to farm big enemy ships in a Tashkent-esque way?
Situational? When exactly are there no situations when you don't need to deal with enemy DD's, can't farm BB's or cruisers, or can't cap? If you can't do any of those things, the battle is probably already over.
One-dimensional? Yeah just read the two previous points. She has at lest two main roles she's good at, that's more than many other DD's.
Bad DPM? Hasn't stopped me from doing a ton of damage. The ballistics and accuracy are so good that the effective DPM is way higher than
some of her counterparts. The only DD that can match her ballistics and beat her in DPM is Khabarovsk, and that one has her own problems (Forrest Sherman can as well in her current state, but that ship seems just busted). And as a bonus, Ragnar gets 30 mm pen as well, making her effective DPM almost unrivaled against most cruisers.
Ragnar is a prime example of being way more than the sum of her parts. You look at the stats and see all the bad parts, and at first having a radar seems like the only redeeming quality. That tricks a lot of people, and it might keep her quite rare and underestimated for a long time. And I for one am fine with that.
Looking to get this ship next! Have almost al rare/premium DD’s of tier IX/X except the steel ships & smaland. But i somt fully agree, opposed this ship quite a few times in my druid and manage to out dpm ragnar almost every time. But this ship seems awesome to play and defintely Will get her in a few months
Probably only the bad playerbase. The competitive players know how strong and survivable Ragnar is and she is used a lot in competitive tournaments.
Wow impressive torp beats! Hard to play against Ragnar in a dd - generally find torping it is the only way out. Personally I prefer Smaland but that's just me..
You should run the mod where you get torpbeat music instead of the torpedo warning sound! That dodge at 1:25 was epic!😊
Is there actually a mod for that? Is it part of modstation?

Still learning it. I've mainly been playing it in ranked. I probably play too aggressively though. I can get the dd no worries but after that, because I'm the only dd usually, I have to do the spotting so can't farm as well as I'd like. Might have to start playing it in randoms.
Terrific vid. I am 3k steel away from Ragnar. It'll be my 1st steel ship and I am chomping at the bit for it. My only coal ship is Marceau, which I love, but looking forward to Ragnar's flat arc shots, radar hax, and heal. The only thing I'll miss is the torpedo option.
I mean if you are throwing the opportunity to get ohio for this ship you must be a hardcore DD main

Have gotten my Ragnar today. In my 2nd game i got almost 200k. She eats most cruisers for breakfast and you absolutely RIP APART DDs. AA is really strong and you can leave it active pretty much all the time, because you're open anyways.
So far i really, really like her. Pretty much never felt this "at home" in a ship before. She also plays a lot like ADCs in League of Legends which for me is super nice, because i have much more experience there.

Marceau could actually melt you there if he switched to AP. Ragnar's 25mm armor works against you if enemy shoots AP. And because she is thick, AP shells don't overpen that often.
that was my 1st thought. French DD or light german DD AP is likely to punish the broadside-1st-anti-HE idea, and she's a bit sluggish in turns or when unboosted.

would you recommend the Ragnar over the Plymouth.... I'm guessing you would. I am trying to decide which of those I want for my next steel ship. Whci reminds me... have you done a video on Plymouth? I'll have to look for one.

Got a Plymouth, not many games in her but it's underwhelming so far. Problem is AP only and lower rate of fire than Mino - if something with armor angles, you just really struggle to do much to it. Smoke/radar/hydro combo is nice, I think it would shine more in a div but if I was doing it over, I'd get the ragnar probably.
@@oldRighty1 Hey... thank you for the feedback! I appreciate your insight. Most of the conversations I have seen regarding Plymouth are favorable. I know that I curse under my breath when a Plymouth shows up on the enemy team. Its that smoke+radar that I find attractive. Can't do that with Mino.... besides, I can't figure out how to aim with the Mino...those shells are just so lofty 80% of them miss. I'm leaning toward Ragnar since I am more of a DD player.... just not sure how much different the ragnar will be from Friesland in terms of play style. Thanks again for your feedback!
8:23 If the marceau had shot AP at your side, you wouldnt have lasted long.
I would take out incoming fire alert and BFT in exchange for conceal, lets you radar DDs as soon as you are spotted.
Sometimes you can't see both shells coming from a turret because they're in the same place, so it looks like one shell. Nice.
I would drop SE for SI, you get the HP back in a heal plus more speed boosts and radars

I have tried more than three times to kill Ragnar with my Marceau and it's difficult even with the high dpm of Marceau! Especially when trying to disengage and make more and more distance to enemy Ragnar you have that arcs of Marceau! With my kleber tho,139mm and reload booster things changed! Kleber can kill Ragnar! The best way I found is go close! Use that reload booster to land at Ragnar a lot of shells then disengage and fight from distance! With kleber you can actually hit Ragnar even at 12 km when Ragnar have some problems to do that to you!

Ragnar is quickly becoming my new fave ship to play. It's the only ship I have where I can maintain over 70% WR. Over 120 battles so far. :)
I’d wager that’s because 1. You’re good. And 2. A DD killer DD doing its job well makes winning very hard for your red teams. Given the chain reaction of killing DDs.

if you had steel for only one of the following 2 steel ships, which of the following 2 would you get: Ragnar VS Bourgogne?
Ragnar for sure. But if you like BBs go for Bourgogne.
I had the same dilemma when the -25% coupon came up end of last year. I love DDs so wanted the Ragnar, especially for ranked. I don't really like BBs in general. However, I chose Bourgogne as she had been around alot longer and could potentially be removed from purchase at some point. Ragnar is far newer and so is a safer bet to stay. Bourgogne is also so unique and different and doesn't feel like a BB to play. Her speed boost and omg her juicy reload booster is just unreal. Broadside cruisers and BBS = heaven to smash with AP. Nothing nicer than an unsuspecting ship thinking they have time to turn out between your BB salvos, not knowing you have your booster. I haven't regretted it for a second. By the time the next coupon comes out I'll have enough for Ragnar next 😀

at the rate i get steel from the daily rewards in a clan that doesnt do CBs, i should be able to buy the next power creep ship they come out with thats better than ragnar by next year maybe...
Would you take the Ragnar over the Bourg?
every time I have Ragnar on my it die straight way or they just keep running away.
So first I'd like to put something out, a Daring (not sure if Vampire II has it too) has it chances against a Ragnar if he used his radar with the improved AP angles and shorter AP fuze.
Second there is a weird theory that Ragnar, due to how she excelles at DD fights in CB where she basically shred down any DD fool enough to face her, with the 25 mm belt and the excellent arcs
As a conclusion I'd like to point out that Ragnar has the same guns as one of the premium tier 8 cruiser, but a mediocre one, D7P while having twice the reload
I like taking on DD's in Marceau. Is it worth taking IFHE to be able to fight a Ragnar?
I play Marceau a ton in clan battles. I want to say no, you'll miss the fire chance when you get to farm BBs and CAs while behind isles. But other players may have different opinions.

The only reason I'm even considering it is Marceau has such a rate of fire, I'm gonna get a fire anyway? But yeah, I would be halving the chance.
But I also wanna surprise and kill a Ragnar if and when I meet one. 😎
@@dany1441 It's probably worth testing out. You can do more research and see how much of a damage buff you'd get from penning the Ragnar with HE versus using AP on its broadside. Or an even simpler solution is to just try it... wait for one of those commander reset discount weeks and just lab it out. Let me know if you find out it's worth the switch.
Use AP. He talked about going broad to shatter small HE. The counter is to just to AP the waterline when it happens.
Just load AP and problem solved. Even if you can't pen Ragnar's belt, you can start multiple fires easily
Had a full health Ragnar rush me around a corner at 4k in my Edinburgh today, I didn't have time to angle and still killed him with 25% HP left.

I ran three times into a double Ragnar and a Friesland div. It's so difficult to counterplay as they farm down a flank. They just sit behind Friesland smoke and hydro farming at range, then rush down DDs when the radar cruisers have enough and take off or die.
If you're doing this - STOP IT. It's so cheesy.

check druid out... i feel she is a better pick cause of her utility. she has smokes can reposition high dpm and also hydro... i feel druid is an overall team dd
Ap only is very utilitarian.

For me Ragnar got this Alabama taste. Since Massachusetts is gone, we re left with Alabama and every time i look at it i just think "Well its no Massa, i dont bother." Same with Ragnar and Smaland. Really dont like DDs without torps :D
Ragnar is literally like as strong as Smaland tho? Like Alabama is just worse Massa. Ragnar and Smaland are two different ships

It's a better idea on the French and russian DD but if you use your Ragnar in open water more often it may be useful-ish, though rate of fire is already so high that a tiny extra may not make as much sense
I feel like more and more DDs are taking Dazzle, so sometimes it's not your aim.
Doesn't dazzle only give you a few seconds grace? If you can run straight and go dark it's fine since ragnar, and IJN gun boats, are slow; but they are often not alone.
There are many more factors determining if you are going to hit other than accuracy and skill.

Ragnar has been my new favorite. RPF, AFT, Concealment, AR, Superintendent. I really want to run SE, but 3 radars and 3 heals is too strong and the 3 4 point perk combination has really been a killer combination.
As I played it alot in ranked I use SE over SI, Surviving the early game and getting thouse DDs killed is more important than the 3rd consumable. Having more base HP also means each heal gives more HP back, so you dont miss out on Too much overall HP. But true, its a hard choise. I also agree that 3 T4 perks are a must have, its a huge difference having DDs in your radarrange the moment you yourself are spotted.

And i take the bourgogne damm i was so stupid
i started running IFHE on my marceau just because of ragnar haha. it allows you to reach the treshhold of ragnar belt and dumpser it. For anyone going for Ragnar keep an eye out for ifhe haha.
Or just load AP ;)
I'm struggling with the decision between Ragnar and Stalingrad. Need 250 more steel for Ragnar, 1250 for Stalingrad.

Ragnar vs Stalin is a choice between Pushy DD or long range comfort, do what you like best. Incomparable seems to be the very definition of a glass cannon. Possible light cruiser armour compensated by stealth and superheal, so a fairly high skill floor.
So the Ragnar armor shatters he, but some reason potato DDs didn't use AP on your broadside. This is why the players aren't to be taken seriously.

As a DD main I have given up trying to figure out how to counter a Ragnar. I just feel like giving up on any games where this abomination appears…

I don't have Ragnar but in my opinion, she seems very underwhelming. I'm OK with the farming playstyle but i prefer sudden bursts of dmg much more than very consistent and slow damaging. Heck I even almost all the time annihalate a Ragnar in my marceau just sneaking up on a farming Ragnar and just blasting ap away.
