freddie's distortion is so satisfying dude, it sounds so vulgar and strong in this song (distortion really helps those harmonies blend as well, thanks roger)
but if you notice, he only does it in certain parts. it's a really common producer's trick now. you have single voice during the verse or whatever, then when you wanna add some punch, emphasis to a certain lyric, or just get a bit bigger and more bombastic, you add in a couple doubles of the vocal line. and that's just on the lead vocals. queen had 3 singers. Freddie (the rough, meaty mid-range), Brian (the soft, low range), and Roger (the high piercing earsplitting range). By just some cosmic struck of luck those three voices met and obviously blended so well together. It just created this massive sound. Then on top of THAT, the would double the track many many times. Bohemian Rhapsody has 33 tracks of the 3 of them singing. Thus creating a 99 voice choir. Queen was one of the first great utilizers of the multi-tracking phenomenon. Brian Wilson had to have an entire orchestra and do it all LIVE. i highly suggest checking out 10cc and their song I'm Not in Love. The whole song is dozens of sampled vocal parts played on an early synthesizer. People used to mistake them for Queen all the time.
Yeah, double tracking was used so often in fact that an Abby Road engineer invented ADT or automatic double tracking. That way a vocalist wouldn't have to manually record two slightly different vocal tracks to double his voice.
