0009: Deadzones. That’s what we call these former empires. It’s almost funny, they thought they could last forever, and yet… no matter, my crew and I land the shuttle and brave the sharp cold, shielding our eyes from the snow. It seems to take hours to get inside the base, but when we close the mechanical door behind us, the wind and snow fade away instantly. I hear a voice come through my comm. “Remember the mission agents, get in, descend to the mantle, take samples, and get out.” The grainy voice makes it sound like it’s straightforward. Problem is, these empires fell for a reason. They dug too deep, and let the things trapped below loose. Sharp creatures of brittle and hot stone, clearly trapped below the earth for a reason. I tighten my grip on my gun, steel my resolve, and wave my hand in a gesture for the others to follow me, into the mantle.
