I was astonished to hear this, never hearing them live, and having grown up on the album. For a long time at the beginning the sound was so spot on, I was like, "Are they just playing a backing tape? Is he just lip syncing?" But we can see later that it's actually just a perfect performance, and that happens sometimes.

I feel like Styx was lost without Dennis and never recovered. Some of them didn't like his broadway-like shows, and now they're trying to do the same thing without him, and it just doesn't work--at least in my view.

Tommy and JY wanted to be 20-something guitar strumming rock idols forever. Refused to grow up. resisted to change to pop success that Journey, Genesis, Foriegner, REO Speedwagon and other 70s bands had to adapt to stay relevant.

Unfortunately, at the time, Styx was considered a shrewdly calculated, commercial "rip off" of Journey, just as, ironically, Foreigner would be accused of aping Styx. The Hollywood food chain is voracious. Critics never forgave Styx because they couldn't stand Journey and snubbed Neal Shon's band all the way to Neal's going to the bank and to HIS HALL OF FAME INDUCTION SPEECH A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. We true Journey, Styx, and Foreigner fans have never forgotten their veritable pop music genius nor their brilliant Music Hall performances made accessible to arenas, stadiums and, in some cases, entire city blocks.

Oh, man, this is fantastic. They are all so talented, but what the hell are they doing without Dennis DeYoung? I had to grow up a lot to really appreciate him, but DDY is the real thing in an industry full of AutoTuned wannabe-singers who can't entertain a full stadium. Tommy and JY write and sing great songs too, but Dennis had the artistic vision, the instantly-recognizable voice, and the charisma to pull off his non-conformist "square" persona. He was what made them different from the other supergroups of the 70s. Sure, he had bad ideas as well as good -- but that's just what happens when you have a lot of ideas! I guess as long as the three singer/songwriters are alive, there's always a chance for a classic Styx reunion, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

    • @heythereitsRBK2

I think in the end, his ego was what got him kicked out of the band. He didn't want to implement other people's ideas in fear that it would hinder his vision for the band, so Shaw and J Young wanted him out.

The only thing that would have made this better would have been having the piano/keyboard parts that the original recording had.

Greta Van Fleet and other trendy up and coming bands will never match the sheer intensity and raw talent of a DDY-led Styx show...

I saw Styx bad company and billy squier on the same ticket back in Boston MA in 99 2000. When bad company finished he alf the tent emptied,I looked at my friends and said let's see how close we can get to see Styx. It turned out we were about 13-15 rows from the stage! We had mezzanine tickets and we acted as if we belong there!

He was a control freak. I actually got to be in arena during a setup of the concert in our city (long story) and their stage show was CHOREOGRAPHED for his on stage posturing and antics. Tape markers and aimed lighting and all.
