- Why do you need to master your camera gear?
Without taking ownership of your camera, your settings, and how to get the most from its ergonomics and focus modes, you really are asking for wrongly exposed and badly taken images, - and who would you blame? your camera?
Regardless of what camera you have, or how good you think it is! Owning your camera settings and being confident with your camera, WILL make you a better photographer! I PROMISE!!

I'd love a video on the sigma 100-400mm with the nikon z system. The good the bad etc. Just can't justify the cost of the native 100-400. Would love to hear your thoughts in good detail. 👍

Great video. Is it a way to get Z6 to automatically reset the crop sensor to full ? I seem to forget to reset it manually 😩
Hi Gareth, Nice to see you back. Have you worked out how to assign auto ISO to a button or quick menu on Nikon Z7/ii. I use it occasionally when I am shooting handheld. Have assigned a memory setting on the PASM dial. Then you have to go to auto ISO which I have in the my menu to change the minimum shutter speed. Does my head in. I prefer to shoot in manual mode, but auto ISO has it's place. You should take up teaching photography. Run workshops.

A lot of great points there and so true that you have to practise to gain mastery over the equipment (ahem, cough, cough, that's my letdown). I have the Z6, among other gear, and it's definitely too heavy for me to contemplate using for a day's street shooting - that's even if I could manage to keep walking for a full day these days!
Sorry to hear about the hack that killed your other social media, but glad to see the profiles are attracting followers again.

Very interesting vlog Gareth, I agree with your views but I suppose it depends on the type of photography you undertake, and the conditions you work in. I think understanding your environment is important but knowing your gear will certainly give you an advantage, especially when things go wrong....or not quite to plan.....what happened to your social media, hacked or forgot your password? 😳
Nice vid! Very first thing I do is to de-couple the shutter and the focus. Unfortunately, Fuji are very good at putting their AF-ON button in weird places (except for the x-s10, which has it where a human's thumb might actually be, more or less). So I use various workarounds for back-button focus, especially assigning the "press" function of the rear dial to AF-ON (e.g. x100v). But even with that faffing, it's still so important to find some way to assign focus to anywhere other than the shutter button, in any focus mode.
As for switching between camera systems, oh, man, my limited brain couldn't cope with that. Even just getting used to the x-s10 PSAM dial (even while staying within my familiar Fuji system comfort zone) is hard enough. If I had to use a totally different brand, or even a different sensor size, I'd be all over the place.
As for knowing your lens, yeah. I know (of) a photographer who ONLY uses her x100v, and I know another guy who only uses an x-pro 3 with the 35 1.4. And of course both of these artists produce way more photos, and way better photos, than me with my several bodies and lenses.

How did you lose your SM ?
I use spot metering 90% of the time, yeah I know many people say you have to be careful as you can over and under expose if you get it wrong, especially over expose but I've become so used to it now that the other metering feels weird to me. I still adjust the exposure compensation at times and always work the histogram to my needs but spot metering is me now.
@Jack Warner Hi Jack, yes I agree with you but I use spot metering for my street photography, I generally only photograph the streets during days with very bright conditions and it works for me, I'm used to it now but it can trip up the unaware, night shooting is a different setup for me altogether.
