I picked up yoshi because all my friends play the "menacing" characters (ganondorf, ridley, etc) and i just wanted to beat them up as a cute dinosaur. Thanks for the tips this will help my game out a lot
Replacing Black Yoshi with Wooly was by far the worst change for Ultimate. Nice guide, tho. Hopefully I can get some more useful practice in and stop autopiloting

i'm a yoshi main (by default, it's my favorite character in mario's series) and my friends hate me lol. For some reason: 1-easy to pick up 2-the dair deals up to 40% (ish) 3-bodyguard on the second jump LOL 4-Up-air spammable, kill move, and can go through a lot of things like young link's D-air 5-I like to kill with the Neutral B >:) 6-Down B does break shield 7- And worst of all, Yoshi seems to have NO END LAG OR LANDING LAG, like, i can put a jab faster than zelda's grab when i land. LMAO
I've mained Yoshi and DK since the beginning, so I'm really glad to see other people who share my interest. This video is definitely informative and it was nice to see that I'm already doing good Yoshi things, like up air chains or the reverse b. My main (heh) issue is timing my tilts and side airs properly.
@@frost9681 honestly? Yeah man. Something deeply satisfying about smashing my dino-face into someone so I can volleyball-style spike them for a kill. Also, the speed for either char's fair is different, so it constantly forces me to make sure I'm paying attention to my zoning and timing. Also I love nasty kills with pretty pink dinos/gorillas
@@frost9681 Pink FTW. Dedede isn't a char I was ever good with, his moveset never really resonated with me. However, I love playing against anyone using any char, because no two people play the same toon the same way. Always something fun to learn.
@@LeonGroff2777 Dedede is just absolute garbage which is probably why his moveset didn't resonate with you. Unfortunately, Dedede is the only character I can play. Gimmie Dedede and I can whale on most people, give me any other character, even S tiers, and my brain just stops functioning and I lose.
Also with eggs depending on how long or quickly you tap up+b will determine how far throws them. If you quickly tap up+b then forward, you can set up for a dash attack. Or if the opponent is further away, you can force them close with a long toss. Very helpful advice, thanks for the great video!
I've been a Yoshi main for a very long time now and for at least 4 years in my school, I have been undefeated. But recently a new kid has joined the school I go to and he was amazing at the game and I no longer am undefeated. I realized that he was using jumping a lot to his advantage. I needed something to show me how to stop all this jumping because I never needed to use Yoshi's aerial attacks to win before and this video really helped extend my knowledge about his aerial attacks! @@kiddo4838 I didnt need to use aerials, I did other things. I used shield a lot to my advantage... I do an up smash, then, when the opponent is at the right angle I side dodge and do a yoshi bomb. If it doesnt work than I have a lot of other ways I can win without aerials.
You need waaaaay more subs man. Your stuff is just as good as RelaxAlax, or Alpharad, or Introspecktive, or other smash youtubers with a decent following
When I first started playing ultimate, I mained Yoshi simply because I like him. Then I unlocked Lucina and mained her. After months of practice, I still failed to get my gsp above 1 mil. Out of frustration I decided to try Yoshi out. To my surprise, I was actually winning matches and when I lost it didn't feel like I was being dominated the entire match.
Thanks for your videos man! You partially inspired me to main Yoshi and I haven't regretted it. It would be awesome if you made a more comprehensive or advanced Yoshi guide! Or maybe covering topics like landing/recovery with Yoshi, more homework assignments, or Yoshi's disadvantage state etc. I would love to see that content.
I gotta tell you I don’t comment much, but right before I saw this video I was saying to my friend: “I love being a Dk main, but the top tiers are just so good at rush downs that dk is often at a disadvantage, but if I wanna learn a new character all the guides are like 30+minutes and go over moves that are super simple in greater detail then it needs.” I’ve been thinking about yoshi for a while and the start of your video alone caught my attention, gonna pick up the character and have some fun!

... Been my best character since melee. No clue why. Mostly I just play random. But Yoshi is the one character that felt nearly intuitive. Always pull him out if playing random starts biting me in the ass.

Both are very good. I'd suggest playing the opposite of how your opponent is playing a lot of the time. If they're playing defensive, get in their face. If they play aggressive, be more patient and look for openings.
Aidan Lorde I’ve seen a lot of good use to mix up my recovery and covering tech situations. It last long enough to cover tech, missed tech, get up, get up attack (character dependent) and I can generally fade away to towards the roll depending on whether I think I can reach them with the last hit to send them into another tech situation

Honestly, until this video, I didn't believe "breif" was a word you could use to describe a good character guide. But this completely exceeded my expectations. Thank you for this! I think I've found my secondary (although, all you really needed to say was Uair strings)!

1 thing that Yoshi can do what other chars cant do as good, is if you time and predict well. You can use down B close to ledge, it either hits low recovery chars like Ike/Chrom (Witch we usually struggle to edgeguard against). Or you ledgetrump them with a quick ez kill bair. Ofc if the opponent instarecovers on the ledge then they slip past. So mix it up with throwing an egg at the ledge for an ez followup punish :)
Played Link and Sephiroth once he was released since I bought SSBU and whole they were fun, just to see I grabbed yoshi to play him like I used to in the original SSB and Brawl and man he is so much fun! Became my main once again!

Side b is so helpful and so is egg rolling to down b. Especially since everyone who plays against yoshis think side b is trash and yoshi players won’t use it. It’s just about how you use it. The stuff it cancels. I’d be willing to show you guys what I mean. My style and mindset of playing yoshi is to 1. Not get hit 2. Play aggressive and unorthodox. When you do that you get creative and you really see how much potential he has. Plus since he is easy to pick up, playing unorthodox would seem better. Since everyone knows yoshis gonna nair out of sheild all the time. Why not roll forward through them and down B. They are either going to shield and your going to break it. Spot dodge so you won’t get them in the start but you’ll always get them in the end. Or you get 100% of it and combo up from there.
I’d recommend utilizing eggs when off stage. Use when evading effectively or if opponent doesn’t edge guard and charges a smash attack or other chargeable moves. Saving jumps when edge guarding also allows you to go super deep from stage and still easily recover
Cheers dude, really need to practice those reverse egg lays, going really well with yoshi online, went from 1.8 mil to 3.2 in the first day, but getting easily countered by people sitting in their shield and going for safe options out of hit. Just so hesitant to use the egg lay because if I side b I'm pretty much dead.
What's the best yoshi skin and why is it purple? nah but on a serious note, I seem to do well against most MU's except Zelda with her spammy neutral B and teleport because of the large hurtboxes as well as the added invulnerability with those attacks and Ike's gigantic sword when spaced right, do you have any tips? any are appreciated! nice vid btw, T. my bro is an ike main and usually when throwing his fast nairs the best option is to parry them and try to anti air, in general playing more defensively against ike usually works out for me

I feel like they should replace Yoshis up b. The up b is tossing eggs, and while it’s cool, it’s doesn’t give you much height. Replacing the egg toss with a longer higher flutter jump would be perfect. Honestly, when has yoshi ever thrown eggs to gain height? I don’t know. But the flutter jump could deal some damage if somebody’s in the air. The first jump is fine, but the second one was the flutter jump, maybe just replace it with a normal double jump. Like Mario’s jump, he does the classic jump, then a spin. Something along those lines. Actually, I would play with Yoshi much more if the up b was changed
8 just bought a yoshi amiibo, so I wanted to pick this Char up and play it a bit before Training my amiibo. Here I am wanting to become a joshi main now
I just want to learn Yoshi because all my friends like to use Little Mac and spam Smash Attacks and K.O Punch's. U-air combos should really help me. As a Jigglypuff main. I should know falling aerials should combo into other moves. Yoshi is basically the same character.
If there's a character that has a bad/ okay recovery you can cheese them so hard with Yoshi. Face the stage inward Dino tail facing ledge. Lure them there, and use your neutral b because the grab is slower and you oponet will fall to their doom in the egg. Unless they have fingers of a god, in that case you can hit them down with a Ariel or ect
Occasionally I try dropping people off stage when messing around. Almost never works, but it’s led to some funny moments. However, in Melee there is one particular map where this works far too well. It’s the Legend of Zelda map with the big turtle going up and down. Get Yoshi to the bottom right platform, under the dock. The egg seems to hit the dock, making it harder to angle back to land. Good times... and my friends don’t let me choose that map w/ Yoshi any more.
Ahh, sounds good. I actually don’t own it, so only play with friends. Dunno about CPUs, but with others it’s one of those games that takes ages to get bored of.

Also, your egg won't bounce unless you let go of B. Bouncing egg toss is one of the best changes to Yoshi in this game.

Another thing I think Yoshi mains should practice is spiking. The spike hit box is small so practicing that is useful for edge guarding.

You can use down B close to ledge, it either hits low recovery chars like Ike/Chrom (Witch we usually struggle to edgeguard against). Or you ledgetrump them with a quick ez kill bair. Ofc if the opponent instarecovers on the ledge then they slip past. So mix it up with throwing an egg at the ledge for an ez followup punish :)
I've been a Yoshi main since I first picked up Melee, I'm glad to see he's getting so much attention in Ultimate :)
Played Link and Sephiroth once he was released since I bought SSBU and whole they were fun, just to see I grabbed yoshi to play him like I used to in the original SSB and Brawl and man he is so much fun! Became my main once again!

Tip: side b can be used to set up a back air combo. Very situational, but gives it a decent use.

Id also add in that pivot canceling helps yoshi a lot for f.tilt and u.tilt combos and neutral in general
Side b is so helpful and so is egg rolling to down b. Especially since everyone who plays against yoshis think side b is trash and yoshi players won’t use it. It’s just about how you use it. The stuff it cancels. I’d be willing to show you guys what I mean. My style and mindset of playing yoshi is to 1. Not get hit 2. Play aggressive and unorthodox. When you do that you get creative and you really see how much potential he has. Plus since he is easy to pick up, playing unorthodox would seem better. Since everyone knows yoshis gonna nair out of sheild all the time. Why not roll forward through them and down B. They are either going to shield and your going to break it. Spot dodge so you won’t get them in the start but you’ll always get them in the end. Or you get 100% of it and combo up from there.

I’d recommend utilizing eggs when off stage. Use when evading effectively or if opponent doesn’t edge guard and charges a smash attack or other chargeable moves. Saving jumps when edge guarding also allows you to go super deep from stage and still easily recover

Just started using Blue yoshi and he’s by far my favorite main so far. He’s helped me win a lot of online matches.
I just potentially switched to Yoshi (went 2-2 and got 13th out of 53 last week with a week old Yoshi.)
So this is good for me to study!

Cheers dude, really need to practice those reverse egg lays, going really well with yoshi online, went from 1.8 mil to 3.2 in the first day, but getting easily countered by people sitting in their shield and going for safe options out of hit. Just so hesitant to use the egg lay because if I side b I'm pretty much dead.

What's the best yoshi skin and why is it purple? nah but on a serious note, I seem to do well against most MU's except Zelda with her spammy neutral B and teleport because of the large hurtboxes as well as the added invulnerability with those attacks and Ike's gigantic sword when spaced right, do you have any tips? any are appreciated! nice vid btw, T. my bro is an ike main and usually when throwing his fast nairs the best option is to parry them and try to anti air,
in general playing more defensively against ike usually works out for me
late comment, but against zeldas you can punish up bs and bait neutral b by running/jumping into them but shield or jump back at the last second.

I feel like they should replace Yoshis up b. The up b is tossing eggs, and while it’s cool, it’s doesn’t give you much height. Replacing the egg toss with a longer higher flutter jump would be perfect. Honestly, when has yoshi ever thrown eggs to gain height? I don’t know. But the flutter jump could deal some damage if somebody’s in the air. The first jump is fine, but the second one was the flutter jump, maybe just replace it with a normal double jump. Like Mario’s jump, he does the classic jump, then a spin. Something along those lines. Actually, I would play with Yoshi much more if the up b was changed

8 just bought a yoshi amiibo, so I wanted to pick this Char up and play it a bit before Training my amiibo. Here I am wanting to become a joshi main now
I wish there was a training mode in smash that showed both character and attack hitboxes. I feel like that could greatly help people improve
I just want to learn Yoshi because all my friends like to use Little Mac and spam Smash Attacks and K.O Punch's. U-air combos should really help me.
As a Jigglypuff main. I should know falling aerials should combo into other moves. Yoshi is basically the same character.

If there's a character that has a bad/ okay recovery you can cheese them so hard with Yoshi. Face the stage inward Dino tail facing ledge. Lure them there, and use your neutral b because the grab is slower and you oponet will fall to their doom in the egg. Unless they have fingers of a god, in that case you can hit them down with a Ariel or ect
Occasionally I try dropping people off stage when messing around. Almost never works, but it’s led to some funny moments. However, in Melee there is one particular map where this works far too well. It’s the Legend of Zelda map with the big turtle going up and down. Get Yoshi to the bottom right platform, under the dock. The egg seems to hit the dock, making it harder to angle back to land. Good times... and my friends don’t let me choose that map w/ Yoshi any more.

Ahh, sounds good. I actually don’t own it, so only play with friends. Dunno about CPUs, but with others it’s one of those games that takes ages to get bored of.
