My theory is Angel turn into that pure vampire form when he got sent into the hell dimension after season 2 of Buffy and that's how he survived. Which would also explain why after Angel came back he didn't turn to the vampire until the very end of the episode 4 of season 3.
Mine has always been his determination to find a way back out of hell for Buffy to let her know that she didn't have to feel bad for sending him there. Because we know that he eventually got back all of the memories of what he did as Angelus since that was shown in Becoming part 1.
I think pure evil isn't nuanced and is more animalistic, whereas evil tainted with humanity has the capability of targeted cruelty such as with Angelus and Lilah
Tim Minear, who wrote and directed it, was de facto co running Angel with Greenwalt and Joss (he wasn't there 24/7 because of Buffy but said yay or nay to everything and had veto power) and was the only writer Joss never rewrote and the first to break stories (when the showrunner put the episode into 4 acts, scene by scene, before the credited writer did the dialogue) without him.
In Through The Looking Glass If ever there was part made for Cordelia it was this. Again totally comedy overload in Pylea. Fred of course is totally charming, she was always a fan favourite from the entire Buffyverse, and of course a Whedon favourite as Fred here, Dr Claire Saunders in Dollhouse, and Wendy Lin in The Cabin In The Woods. The writers did put some interesting changes into the Dynamic where Angel is overcome by his pure demon side, and cannot contain it as back in his own dimension. A bit of a shocker when Lorne's head is on the platter!
"When I got here, they ... they didn't do that." So, Senhorita Dominique, if someone asked you if your favorite was Cordelia or Fred, would you hate them for making you choose? Your excitement is delightful. Thanks for sharing.
Domi denying the reality of Lorne's head on a platter reminds me of the kid in _Princess Bride_ insisting to his grandfather that he got the story wrong when he read that Wesley had died. Read it right, Grandpa Joss. Lorne can't be dead.
This was (of course) another great reaction, Domi e! From the huge impact the Wolfram & Hart reveal had on you - yes, clearly _not_ the glimpse of W&H you expected - and thanks for the note that it was one of the biggest shocks the Buffyverse has _ever_ given you - to the things you're (re)learning about Fred.... Plus, it was interesting to see that knowing that Lorne is around later doesn't keep that final scene from being shocking and disquieting! (Oh, to have had the reassurance back then that he survived!) You had great observations about how we never got to see Angel's reaction to what he'd done as Angelus in BtVS s2! And, I also would've liked to have seen what Lilah was up to [becoming someone who never resembled Dead End's depiction again, for one thing]... And VERY insightful speculation on what the evil priests wanted from the "Comshuck"! Great stuff all-around!!
Regarding the Cordy/Fred question. Why choose? For me, I have no choice but to love both of them. They're two of my favorite fictional characters ever. Edit: Forgot to say Merry Christmas to everyone. So Merry Christmas!
There’s another reactor, Dakara, that’s ripping through these Angel episodes right now, but I’m worried, because she hasn’t watched Buffy’s S5 finale yet. I really hope the person who gave her the watch order didn’t f*ck it up.
SPOILERS FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON What happens with Cordelia at the end of this episode isn't any better than what the director was putting her through the episode before this one. She just doesn't realize it until she sees Lorne's head.
Numfar is Joss Whedon
Peak of his career imo.

It's a decent theory given how animal-like he was when he first came back...

It is interesting that the pure vampire did not appear as evil as Angelous.

When Domi finds out who played Numfar she will do the Dance of Shock and Amazement.
Ahhhh I didn't even know there was a League of their Own show and now it's too late!
Oh my goodness! I loved your face at the Wolfram and Hart reveal!

It’s funny how the Pyleans abhor music but somehow produced one of the best dancers ever.
22:01 - Okay, that got me laughing.

Always loved Angel Fred ❤
It’s not cake, but new life goals for the next Halloween party or small Con hospitality suite!
They took Lorne's head off at the end
@22:30 Stuck on Lorne, she's got a feeling down deep in her soul that she just can't lose, guess she's on her way ...
