I was a 70's kid, but a few of the 70's candies were still relevant in the 80's. Wax lips and candy cigarettes were both popular. We ate "penny candy," which was loose candy, usually wrapped, that you would fill a small bag and pay 25 cents. (This was around 1972 - 1976) I loved shoestrings, which was thin cherry or strawberry flavored licorice, squirrel nuts: some kind of seed mixed with molasses, Mary Jane: a peanut butter and molasses confection and SweeTarts, which was the texture of a chewable vitamin in a candy. There are too many candies to mention, but I also liked to freeze candy bars like Marathon and Charleston Chew. Another Holderness class that also touches the child in everyone. What's more important to a kid than candy? Thank you for another treasure.

Not many recall the original, sort of like the Cadbury Creme Eggs. I recall when they came out and the inside was creamy and the chocolate was so good. They changed the recipe in the 90's and they haven't been the same :(
There were two kinds of candy cigarettes. One was the stick the other was gum rolled in paper (imagine the shape of a cigarette) and had powder in it. You blew and it looked like smoking. I don't know what they were called but those root beer flavored disks - NOT the barrels, they're an entirely different candy experience. When I wanted to round out the meal I'd also buy a Fresh and Tasty Peaches and Cream drink and a big bag of O'Ryan's Sour Cream and Onion chips. I don't think they make any of those anymore. Man those chips were so good we'd even eat the dust at the bottom.
BOTTLECAPS! I just read someone else's post below me and that's what the are!!! I've been trying to figure that out for YEARS!

Mini Skor bars. Zots (rare, but amazing). Bit o Honey. Lemonheads (Applehead, cherryheads) fun size big hunk. Charleston chew. Jolly Rancher fire sticks. I always liked getting the vampire wax lips but they tasted gross. Pretty sure my pancreas is taking a hit just thinking of all these.

Hi Holderness family! My mother would give us Necco’s. Flavorless discs that came in a wax paper like roll. And she thought they were a treat. Ugh!! I still cringe when I occasionally see them. A few others that were big in the 80s were Mary Jane taffy like candies, Charms pops lollipops (we could get them in the school store). My favorite, Sugar Daddy Carmel lollipops and sugar babies were bite size pieces. I am pretty sure there is some place you can get these things. On line or at Cracker Barrel because they have a lot of retro candy. Was a fun video to watch!!!

As someone who sold numerous cartons of candy ‘cigarettes’ at my former grocery store, I can assure you you that they are still sold in the United States. They are called candy sticks, and the boxes just might look like vintage cigarette packaging. They no longer have the pink , and you can’t blow into them and have the puff of powdered sugar come out the end imitating smoke. Did I feel bad selling them? Yeah, kind of. I loved them, and I have never been a smoker.
