Dr Guy, its now been two years since i submitted my dissertation and i was reminiscing when I came across one of your famous you tube videos. It still fills me with pride what I achieved but could not have done it without the support of you and others close to me. I hope others will be inspired to go on and achieve their dreams. Never Give Up - success is just on the other side of failure!
Holy cow, Stuart! Thank you so much for sending me this message and letting me know you finished!!! Please email me your physical mailing address so I can send you a small something as a congrats. My email address is guy [at] thedissertationmentor [dot] com
Dr Guy you are an angel. you have opened up many resources for me and many things are getting simpler by your presentations. God bless you. i feel so much clear now!
Excellent advice Dr Guy. I have just subscribed. I am currently at the end of my masters dissertation and getting ready to be interviewed in May 2017 for a doctoral program in Education studies...I will definitely share your videos around. Keep them coming and thank you. 😊
Dr. Guy. Great video. I will be sure to share with my classmates. 2 years into my EdD and haven't really heard it as plain as you have given it. Thanks for being clear about the road ahead.
Thank you so much for sharing Dr Guy. It helps me a lot. When I'm stuck yet have minimal time and deadline are just ahead, your video is like a life saver
Thanks for these long form videos, they provided invaluable insight into how to approach my bachelor's thesis (even though it was aimed at doctoral students).
Dr. Guy, thank you for this video. I am new to my DHA and taking my first methodology class has left me nervous about picking the wrong method. Your video just put me at ease. Thanks for your suggestions on research manuals. I will be clicking our link and buying it. :)
thank you for the videos professor, they are really helpful and educative.... you just make things very simple for us, researchers, May God bless you Doctor thanks for the books of John Creswell...
Thank you so much for your videos Dr. White! I just watched four of your videos and I found them to be very informative specially "choosing dissertation methodology video." I learned a lot from them and will definitely apply what I learned for my upcoming dissertation writing.
Thanks a lot! This video and other videos have provided tremendous amount of help for me personally. Working on my first chapter of doctoral research. Hope to get more insightful lectures from you, sir.
Thanks a lot for this insightful video presentation. I just started my journey for the DBA program and I'm given the task to develop dissertation topics.
What you are doing Dr. Guy in this project is phenomenal. I mean helping graduate students out. Do you know that in my religion "Islam" that all human beings stop receiving rewards for their deads after they die except for three kinds of people: One of those three kinds is the one who spreads knowledge, and that from whose knowledge people keep benefiting even after he passes away. I wish you a long and happy life with more knowledge to spread and more people to benefit from it.
Thank you so much for all of the information you have provided. I was having such a difficult time with the qualitative research methods. I can't thank you enough! I will absolutely get those books you suggested, you deserve the commission!
Oh lord, I feel like I've wasted the first year of my PhD spinning my wheels trying to get to the proposal stage while already doing field work and not understanding where the funded project ends and my dissertation begins. I bought your book last year and wish I had opened it a lot sooner. Very pleased to discover the videos and to start implementing your process to move forward. Thank you!
Greetings Dr. Guy. my chair just put me in touch with these RUclips videos. I have to say that your comment about the hidden requirements hit a home run. My first subject was not approved by my first chair, so that set me back about 10 months. Now Im scrambling to get caught up. I will defiantly be watching all your videos.ThanksKen Kuczma
I really enjoy your videos - thanks so much. I thought I had a grasp on all of these concepts and processes, but after starting my PhD two months ago, I've realised that I probably don't know them as well as I should!
Astrid Coxon Hi Astrid! Wow! You are already working on your dissertation within two months of starting your program?? GREAT! You're one of the few brave people who start that quickly! Thank you so much for watching and engaging with me! Send me a question any time!
Haha, well I'm on a studentship so if I don't finish in 3 years I won't get paid any more - pragmatism drives my deadlines!! Thanks - I'm sure I'll have questions for you along the way..! :)
Hmm well it is part of an overall career plan..! Speaking of pragmatism - I'm toying with the idea of conducting my qualitative analysis from a pragmatic perspective!
Thank you Dr Guy for your useful videos. If you could make a video about how to write a research article what are the steps to start and choose the topic, which section should we start with and so on...
Hello Dr. White. I really appreciate this video. I am presently studying for a MSc in Integrated Rural Development and Agricultural Extension and really having problems on how to choose methodology and wish you could help me out. My work is based on the analysis of the effectiveness and efficiency of alternative dispute resolution models in the management of crop-farmer Cattle- grazer conflicts in the NWR, Cameroon.
Some days I seem to get lost in thought about what it is I am doing and trying to achieve. Your videos put me back on track - its like going to see a shrink and being told that everything is still ok! .......thanks.
I love the excite that you demonstrate when sharing this information. I find your videos to be simple yet thorough. I have never done a dissertation and you make it seem possible!
Paused the video to spend an hour looking for the one hard copy of Creswell, it must be in storage. Now, I am looking for electronic versions. All I came up with immediately was a printed Research Methods in the Social Sciences by David N. not on the above list. I will keep looking. I know that from the Masters to the Phd, I have electronic Creswell!!!
Ok, just found both level one research manuals - hiding in a 2016 paid books folder - It pays to have your electronic books filed where you can find them!!! As well as backup on three different devices.
Hi Dr. White, I hope this message finds you well! I am three classes in (almost 4, but who's counting) into my EdD program. My quantitative research professor said your videos were "must watches," and I can see why. However, I do have a question being new to the process. Why would a dissertation chair allow one to write 10 chapters of a dissertation and THEN say, no, start over? If the EdD program is a three year program, would they not help guide you to ensure you have selected the right methodology from the start? My question may seem so naive, but I'm really curious as to what the role of a dissertation chair is if it is not to ensure one's success from the very start. Thanks for any insight you may provide.
Dr. White, I wish I saw this a long time ago. Your videos are so helpful. Right now I am needing to find a conceptual framework for my research. I am doing a phenomenal study with Native American providers who are trained or certified in dialectical behavioral therapy. I want to do an interview process and ask Native providers their experience using DBT among the Native population. So if I am learning this right, their is different models in the phenomenal approach to use. Therefore will need to find one that will look at the interviewee's experiences. Is that correct? Also, hoping you don't mind but did share to my class your website. Joe
+Joe Wood Hi Joe! I would be honored if you shared this with your class. Thank you! Did you see my latest program? www.thedissertationmentor.com/store/oeL9WYdw Overall, never forget that phenomenology typically deals with a very specific process, like childbirth. If DBT has specific steps like that, then you are probably in business. Get a great book on phenomenological approaches to see if it matches. Otherwise, it could be a case study or an ethnography, depending on what precisely you are doing.
Yvette! COOL QUESTION! I'm going to cover this in the next "Office Hours" episode. Methods = tools/techniques. Methodology = strategy. My methods might be "interview," "survey," etc. However, my methodology might be what could be done in the type of research I am conducting and the justification of why I am doing things the way I am doing because of the approach chosen. It's like a dentist: drilling is the method. The whole system of tooth-care in which drilling could sit as a solution -- and why I would choose drilling in this instance is the methodology. Subtle, but important. This gets to a big concern I see when working with doctoral students. Many of them think "I am DOING a case study." When I ask them what that is, they say "surveys." My point is that the case study methodology is larger than just "surveys" it's a whole system of thinking about working with others.
First, thank you for the videos! They address many concerns that are not addressed as clearly or at all elsewhere (from my experience). In this video and several others you recommended accessing as many dissertations in order to reviews methodologies and other factors. Different institutions have dramatically different levels of access to dissertation databases (especially full text access). What databases would you recommend? I have seen ProQuest mentioedn in other places but your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I'm writing a dissertation for my under graduate degree on a topic; "Factors militating against women and girls human rights in Sierra Leone". I need a guide.
Wonderful video, I did not know about the methodology matrix...im happy to know it, I have just started my proposal for PhD, would you make a video on research philosophies in dissertation? thank you ...I am very happy and gonna click the link to buy the books
Abelardo León LOL. I was in my car for these episodes because I had a brand new baby at home that needed some sleep. It's hard to work in my home office when I have to whisper :) After I drink coffee, there is no whisper left in me. So happy you got some value from this video. Send me a question any time! I'll cover it on my dissertation show: ruclips.net/video/B9j1r2ssTEw/видео.html
Guy E White Guy E WhiteThanks Guy. Maybe you have already talked about "variables" but I have not found so much information about this specific issue in qualitative researches. I am wondering about how to conceptualize variables in a qualitative research? do you think is it possible? are there some research that do not need variables or they are always necessary?
At my institution they want us to distinguish between methodology and design. In my case, I have a qualitative study using phenomenological design. A challenge for me has been in the proposal when writing about why a particular design was chosen over the others available. I appreciate the sources you have mentioned. the current dilemma is that my content expert and methodologist do not agree on the design. Any thoughts?
Dr Guy, I have problem with citing in Chapter 3. For example, if I run a reliability test on the SPSS, let's say I get a Cronbach alpha value of 0.713. Where can I find the citation needed on whether or not if that kind of reliability is ok or not. What or whom should I be looking for?
Thank you Dr. Guy. I recently completed Chapter 1, and now my chair wants me to go to Chapter 3 before I complete Chapter 2. Do you have students that approach their dissertations in this manner?
Hey Dr. White, thanks so much for your videos. They are really useful to me, though I am a master student. My problem and my question is regarding my aim of thesis and the objectives I ought to define to meet the primary aim of the thesis. Like my primary aim is to "identify critical success factors for energy performance contracting retrofits of american healthcare facilities" and although I fully know my methodology, I cannot define my research objectives! I would appreciate if you could suggest me some start points. Thanks in advance and warm regards from Germany!
+Sirous Esmaeili Consider looking at "similar" dissertations to yours and see what they recommend be researched in the future. Further, your research objectives may also be guided by the theoretical framework you select. Consider those!
I love your video's. I am having a hard time choosing a topic. I am getting a ED.D and I don't have alot of time because my 10 years deadline is coming to end. What advice or steps can you give me. I want to do it on bullying and African American girls but open to anything due to time. Thanks again you are great.
Denise Young Hi Denise! Best to start where you are! You already have an interest. Next, it's about finding something ABOUT A SPECIFIC TYPE OF BULLYING SITUATION upon which you'd like to focus. What type of bullying situation are you interested in researching?

Dr. Guy. Great video. I will be sure to share with my classmates. 2 years into my EdD and haven't really heard it as plain as you have given it. Thanks for being clear about the road ahead.
I like this one too. This is the way to go. I didn't learn this in the dissertation workshops!

How I wish someone showed me this video (or if my supervisor gave me this input) in the first year of my phd programme... Thank you.
Great lecture. Made me feel like I can certainly do this
This was awesome! God bless and thank you so much!

Hello Dr. Guy, did I read correctly, did you finish your dissertation in less than 9 months?
JV Barnes, Not from start to finish. I did lots of pre-work and spun out in pre-proposal land for a couple years -- where most people get stuck. Then, i figured out a way to finish on a better timeline. There are no " dissertations in a weekend." Lots of hard work. Fortunately, I was able to work many weeks on this thing at 40 hours a week.
