Hi Dr. Guy, I found your video as an undergrad student doing a independent research project (the course starts in January 2019). One major component of this course is to write a literature review. I have revised my research statement to reflect the advice you've provided here but note the buzz word (impact)... "The purpose of this literature review is to provide an overview of the impacts of oil and gas production in Alberta on the biology of aquatic organisms in freshwater ecosystems in 2019."

Another Superb informative Guidance Video esp for a year 3 struggling student. If still struggling to get started then rewatch this video and follow steps. I was hooked and watched all of Dr GW vids and realised that Im trying to start my Lit R first without a clear Purpose statement-Now I get it - I need to do this step first then start researching!!! Thank you so much! Completing that statement at the end helped me put everything into perspective. I am now working on my Prospectus and I feel that my chair will have a clear picture of exactly what I want to study now, I wouldn’t have thought of putting in the year of completion either. Izha Kama It will depend on what your chair thinks and on the norms of your program, but it sounds great. My only question is "WHERE" are these freshwater fishing piers? Are they in a single state or province? Are they only in a certain region?

I followed along and your clearly articulated steps helped me to define a concise purpose statement before the video ended (with a few pauses). However, I wonder if you might have advice for someone who was considering performing a quantitative relationship study at the Masters level? I was under the impression that descriptive studies were too simple for postgraduate research, so I am eager to hear what guidance you might have. Thanks.

Hi Dr Guy, your video is informative. And although, it provided clarity, i am totally confused. My purpose seems like it needs to tweaked again. After watching your video, I took a look at my outcome and something is missing. I am not sure what it is, but I know something is missing or something needs to be tweaked.
I am a Small Business owner and I want to bring awareness to the high percentage failure rate of small businesses.
The purpose of this qualitative Delphi study is to examine if Information Systems will alleviate the high percentage of failure of CEOs within the first five years of operation of small businesses in the United States.

What if you are examining a relationship to see if/how it exists...rather than trying to prove a relationship?
+Christine Marie There are many ways to do this. I think the question is if this is a "relation" correlation thing... or is this more of a "qualitative analysis" sort of "examine the relationship" thing. Often, a qualitative approach works best.

+Valerie Vaughn Hi Valerie! It depends on the study, but I typically do not recommend a correlational study for dissertation writers. Typically, it misses the point of what one is precisely attempting to research.
