+bethhir Thanks for helping the viewers. Sometimes, mindset, background, family, and the like are not important to the discussion -- for me, it's sometimes hard to bypass these subjects. This was one of my first videos many years ago. My latest jump straight in :) Thanks for watching! Thanks for your comment! Send me a question any time!
+bethhir Thank you so much for putting this up. It should never take someone 16 mins to get to how to do a review. The talking about his life in the video is so distracting and makes others not want to watch his videos. smh
The preamble was not a distraction for me at but just served to put the whole research process into context of an integrative life experience. As such, it helped to clarify the presenter's positionality as a real human being who recognizes the challenges of committed to family and also to his professional advancement. This kind of introduction does enable the viewer to appreciate the complexities of the research journey that is interwoven with one's total set of experiences and thus cannot be treated as an isolated segment of the individual's life. As a personal preference, the viewer may choose to skip the preamble and hasten to the 'meat of the matter'.
+Gerrimil7 Thank you for your comment. This was my first video a few years ago before I learned how to do this sort of thing. I have gotten much better. Hope you found some value within :)
The most valuable part of this video was definitely @36:23 (how to gather sources) , 39:01 (creating a literature matrix) and 41:08 (organising your sources) ! Thanks!
I made some timestamps for my personal use but I know others will find it helpful as well. 0:00 Welcome and Learning Objectives 4:01 Motivation and About me from the speaker 12:04 Video Roadmap 14:10 What needs to go into a literature review 15:47 Common mistakes in writing a literature review 19:20 Initial steps before the writing phase of a literature review 26:16 Gathering and organizing materials 38:58 Literature matrix example 41:23 Organizing Step example 42:26 Communicating with your dissertation chair, Minimizing revisions 47:25 Example of an ideal email 51:07 Personal story from the speaker about finishing and graduating
Your video not only clarifies much of what was troubling me in moving forward, but also helped relieve some of the stress I was feeling about difficulties I was having. Hearing that feeling lost, confused, ill prepared, and overburdened are typical in this kind of endeavor really let me know that I'm not as lost, confused, ill prepared, and overburdened as I actually feel. Thank you for taking your time to help people like us to complete this daunting task.
1.Five sources a week x 5 quotes from each source which can produce 400 quotes in 16 weeks!!! 2.Build an environment to write your dissertation. 3.6-8 hours 3 days in a week that’s golden!!! 4.Give your first energy to your first priority when you start a day, and your first priority of the day is DISSERTATION!!! Golden Rules Dr. Thank you so much.
@@grace2garden403 very amazing, practical, and helpful, Thank you DR. Guy for your help. My question is, for these 400 quotes, shall i put all in the dissertation following by my comments, or shall i do paraphrase all ?
Man!.. I have enrolled in a Doctoral program at NCU and failed to complete my dissertation. I wish my chair would provided me with the mentor and guide as you have stated in your video here that I needed to be successful in my dissertation. I have come all the way by passing every single class, completed my comprehensive exam to my dissertation, spent a lot of money for the I call "my life journey" and failed my Doctoral dissertation and not completed my program. If she would just gave me a phone call, or personal email and direct me in the right direction or to your video, I'll successfully completed my dissertation and completed my doctoral program. Thank you Dr. Guy for your explanation. My next journey I will not be the same and I will be more ready and be successful. Boun Xiong.
Dr.Guy is the best tutor I have ever met. He is intelligent, smart and full of charisma.I will recommend him to any one who really have problems dealing with his desertification to contact him. I play his lectures every morning for 30 minutes before I shower to go to work He has a huge experience in research work and he is not greedy. He is sharing the knowledge. He is very good.
I loved this video!! I loved the literature matrix, the cutting and taping the quotes together, and the post it notes. My goal is to get my dissertation finished by February 2022, my doctoral program got derailed by a cancer diagnosis, but the cancer gave me my dissertation topic and a reason to get back to life. You have inspired me to get my dissertation completed in 8 months! You're right, dissertations should not be this thing that keeps you from life! I'm excited! Thank you.
I loved this video. It is an eye opener for me. I should have known it before. I am rewriting the literature review and struggling for time. I did all that negative stuff. I lost all my time. Now I have to pick up pieces and move forward.
I am 58 years old man, English as a second language. Now decided to carry my lifelong dream of possessing a doctoral degree. I was hoping one of my two children could go forward to earn an advanced level, to meet my wish, but both, for now, are not concerned. And that prompts me to go on at this age. God willing, I am embarking on my first class June 21 at University of Phoenix online for “Business Management and Organizational Leadership”. Listening to your free advice “how to write a literature” really helpful. As I stated I did not see the first class, but when I’m expecting anything that could hold valuable information, here I found yours, and I am grateful having it. Thank you so much.
Thank you for affirming some of the things I have already been doing (instinctively) and for adding a few more tips that I can use like doing the matrix. I've struggled with how to organize all the materials I have gathered in the last few months. Most of all I appreciate your acknowledging the feelings that I've gone through in this journey--isolation, confusion and self-doubt. It is good to know that I am not the only one who felt that way. Thank you so much! Am ready to move forward again.
+Maribel Aglipay This is one of the most difficult processes that an educating human being will endure. Keep climbing the mountain. I believe you can do it!
Thank you very much, Dr. Guy E. White. I am at very beginning of my PhD dissertation about Leadership in Higher Education especially about academic staff commitment in relation with Transformational leadership style. I really appreciated the video and even watched the full one on your website. Thanks again and hope a happy life for you and all the members of your family.
Mouktar, thanks for your kind comments. Things for my family are very much getting better each day. Finding our purpose as intended by God and living more and more in line with that purpose -- it's almost heaven on Earth. Sending peace. Send me a question any time.
Thanks, Rolav! Anywhere else I could have done better? I'm thinking about re-doing this video and would love to know where else I could be of assistance.
I'm a Msc student. I'm really lost at the stating point and fed up of my theses and search every where in the internet accidentally, i watched your video. it is encourage me lot and 100% useful. Thank you very much.
Hi Ahamed, thank you so much for saying this. You are very kind. I hope your Master's writing is going well. Please feel free to reach out to me any time for assistance.
Thanks Dr. G! Your video was encouraging and refreshing. I have been stuck on my Lit review because my approach was the-writing-aspect instead of the-gathering-aspect. Nice! Thanks again.
marivic schrage Hi Marivic, you made my day. Thank you so much for those kind words. Feel free to send me a question any time and I'll answer it on my dissertation show: ruclips.net/video/B9j1r2ssTEw/видео.html
I sincerely appreciate the training video. I needed to hear a voice. I am an online student and unfortunate for me, I may need the brick and mortar. Thank you Dr. Guy!
Hi Celeste! I have helped manage and direct many online programs as both a teacher and administrator. What I know is this: Every student should go to the watering hole that fits their thirst. If I can provide anything to help, please let me know. So happy you are reaching out to resources that help you.
I am the happiest person probably today on my journey for a strong and scientific research as a Ph.D. Candidate. I am so inspired by the lecture, particularly the idea of developing a matrix for the literature review, reading 5 books per week and recording 5 quotes are the key messages for me now. Thank you very much. I have just been reading throughout without getting anything done. I am also happy to know that I should read old books as well, a lot of people said to me that I should concentrate on the new articles and books in my field. I am a student of Economics with a concentration on firms level analysis on International trade and its implications for developing economies. I am signing up for your class now...
Really,I'll be using every point that you made as I go forward. The in and out box resonates with me. I've been using large grocery carry all bags as I bring in books from our library inter-loan system and another for the books I'm using for courses. Marking sections of interest and relevance with post-its, reading those sections and gathering quotes, entering the info on a spread sheet and then cutting the sheets into individual strips for organization, finally pasting them into a coherent and relevant organization is all very fantastic. The struggle I've had with papers all these years could have been greatly lessened and my time used much more effectively and meaningfully if these kind of guideline to writing papers was taught in high school. I'm WAY past high school but I find this information a pleasurable relief as I continue my academic journey. You've done many a great service. I'm passing the links to your videos on to my older sister who's in the process of preparing her proposal for her Ed.D, as well as to my own (grown children) as they contemplate continuing their education. Blessings to you and your family.
If you don't mind.... May I ask for a favor? Rather than longer talks, how about sample works with examples? I mean show an example of a dissertation and explain step by step how it had been prepared............ I think that also can be far helpful for young learners like me................ :)
goshhh how could you say that dumb shittt...when you are just watching in his channel... and please if you calling it that long talking...bitch that called encouragement... now just a liitle advice of you, next time around you should practice or improve and focus on your patient because im telling you patient is one of a thing that will help your dumb brain in the future realizing you cant put things up all easily in your way ...and also include appreciation word..
I am starting the doctoral program and the Literature Review seems to be overwhelming. However, Dr. Guy's explanation of the dissertation process makes it more simplistic. In particular, reading five articles, writing five quotes per week from the article, and creating a word document.
Hi all, I am hear to say that it CAN BE DONE. I did use Dr. Guy's advice in several areas. I finished the dissertation and successfully defended the research on June 21, 18. Call me Dr. J.B. Remember everyone, you can keep dwinking with the work until the cows come home. FINISHED is BETTER THAN 'Perfect.'
Dr. Guy I appreciate your video. As a late bloomer in college, 50+ years young and in my Master's program without any face time sharing with my Professors online I truly needed this. Seeing things from so many places and not much of it on the same page makes things so confusing. This has laid so much out for me with great relevance for future writings. You have a beautiful family. ( ; Thank You for sharing your valuable time and I look forward to more of your works here.
Hi Victoria, It's hard to believe how much time passes and how big these kids are getting. It makes me realize how precious time is. In the end, please know that I am here to help. Reach out to me any time for assistance. Dr. Guy
I just discovered you in May 2024! Will be going through your videos. What you said about what this dissertation is preventing me from (spending quality time with my wife) really hit deep. Thank you for putting out this awesome instructional video content!
Dr. Guy, thank you for the tips and lecture on dissertation writing. It is very informative and to the point. I will re-use it and recommend it to my peers. Blessing Wiwuga Orage
I have watched many videos and read many articles on how to write a literature review and this by far is the most practical and honest i have come across.
Thanks Dr. Guy! I found your video very informative with a nice touch on addressing the personal frustrations regarding this process. I am really having a difficult time organizing my Lit review and your video pointed me in the right direction. I've watched this video in whole or parts about 3-4 times. Thanks again for the information.
Hey Dr. Guy, Wow, thanks for the email. As I mentioned earlier I found your video personal and informative. I plan on sharing your insights and video with others. As for additional videos, I think it would be beneficial to help students understand how to navigate the dissertation process to mitigate frustrations. What I mean is; how to manage relationships with your Chair, committee members, etc in order for them to advocate on your behalf and move forward. Help remove the ambiguity and hazing (i.e. tough love) that come out of this process. How to get those valuable nuggets of information that you share in your videos (i.e. how to communicate with your chair). Finally, i am working on a DBA with a for profit online institution and I find the professors seemed to be stretched very thin with full time jobs and other teaching assignments. Thanks again? Valentino
Valentino Murphy Hi Valentino! These are great ideas! Thank you so much. Having a chair is a lot like having a dysfunctional marriage :) Keep telling me how I can help and i'll keep 'em coming!
Dr. White, you are God sent!! I have been trying to work on my literature review and I did not have enough confidence about what I was doing. Fortunately, I found your video before I wasted a lot of valuable time getting "lost". Your video has provided me with a clear road map on how to continue. I definitely would like to be mentored by you! Thank you once again!!
Wonderful outline. After struggling for the past year on the Lit Review, I managed to formulate something similar to what you outline here. I gathered the literature, I had it all tabbed, highlighted, and inked up but could not figure out how to best compile these pieces to form the Lit Review. The part I really could have used was how to cut and paste the components into similar topics to form the outline of the Lit Review. I would love to see a more detailed outline of this. I believe I have a good foundation on the Lit Review and I know it will need a bit more work. I will grab my binders and get the five quotes per piece of literature, so if you have any pointers on how to then cut and group these pieces I would find it extremely helpful. This is a wonderful video.
+Bruce Redekop Hi Bruce. Thank you so much for your kind words and for telling me a bit about your process. When you have everything in your excel matrix, you can then sort by category, subcategory, and then by year. With that, you get a basic history of your quotes by sub category. Then, if you are following this model to the full end, you can then place like-ideas next to one another. This allows you to see what ideas can be synthesized together. Send me a question any time, Bruce!
Dr Guy. i don't know whether i can express my gratitude properly or not. It was actually God who brought me to your channel. I am a doctoral student and in the process of starting my literature review. Kind of 'ost' as you aptly put it but believe me after watching your video i feel so different. so clear and so enriched. you have a brilliant way of telling things. I really feel so blessed. However as you said now it is up to me how to take advantage of your golden set of advice in this video. Thank you for opening up the door of clarity for me or i was stuck in procrastination and doing no progress. I am going to watch each and every video of yours and making a playlist of your channel. Thank you very much indeed. for me definitely you are a God sent angel. God bless you and your lovely family with all the happiness now and always.!!
Love the beginning part about 'your no. 1' and the kids in the backgroundd...made me realise I wanna finish my Lit Review in few weeks and go enjoy my life !!! :D
Lana Repar Hi Lana! Thank you so much for your comment. I remember the struggle to get this work done and I work with so many candidates going through the same thing. Keep me updated along your journey so I can hear how things are going. Feel free to send me questions any time and I'll answer it on my dissertation show. ruclips.net/video/B9j1r2ssTEw/видео.html
I am really lost right now in working with my Phd proposal writing. Listening to your lecture on this area that I need to improve gives me a motivation to try how to collect and organize information and materials into my literature review. Gratitude and thanks to you Dr. Guy for making this lecture available on social media for me to be able to access it. I will write you again how successful I am after applying whatever I have learned from this lecture into practice in my Phd dissertation writing.
I am about to apply for my MPhil program, and as part of my preparation to face the challenge of writing dissertation, I sort to research about ways to write a good dissertation. And I am glade I found your lecture on youtub to guide me. Just to say am grateful for that piece of lecture. Thank you Dr. E. Guy
Dr. Guy, This video was great! I was lost before looking at this video. Everything you said about not feeling adequate, this is more than me was correct. I was like I feel "dumb" and I am stuck. Now I have a better understanding. Thanks for the video. I do have a question for you.
Hi Dr. Guy! I am in the beginning of my dissertation process. Your video gave me a clear and realistic view of how I am going to go about completing my dissertation and earn my doctoral degree. Thank you!
+Hyacinth Kinley While the basis of the most current research should be the last 5 years, clearly you must reach back beyond 5 years to appreciate and discuss the history of the literature. Background usually can exceed the 5 year threshold. Research forming the basis of your problem statement should be in the 3-7 year sweet-spot.
Hi Dr Guy, I love the process but mostly appreciate the guidelines and targets ie. Five sources a week x 5 quotes from each source which can produce 400 quotes in 16 weeks. You have no idea how much of a difference your video's are making to give me a conceptual picture on how to proceed. I am more confident. Once again. Great work. Keep it coming, and appreciate the fact that you care about me even though you have not met me. Blessings to you and your family :)
Just about to start my Literature Review and watching this has helped me so much, it has inspired me so much too! Thanks a ton, God bless you and your beautiful family.
I am in 5 week of my first semester of my doctoral program and I will follow all the advice you have given, I am so excited to get started. I have my literature paper due in 2 weeks and now I have a much better understanding of how to begin. Thank you!
Your presentations are helping me figure out my life, LOL. My situation is unique. However, I do not want to neglect everyone in my life because of my dissertation. Thus, it is helpful and insightful when you discuss your family at the beginning of the videos. I've watched a number of your videos and the language is easily understood. Your grounded and focused on the subject matter, which provides great instruction. I understand the process better as well as knowing what will be required of me. I appreciate your approach and honesty. Thanks, John
Hi Dr. Guy, I am a doctoral learner at Grand Canyon University. I enjoyed your presentation on how to write a literature review. I especially liked the idea of documenting 5 quotes a week and completing a chart/table as a part of the gathering process. I wish I had this information when I began in 2012. Thank you for your presentation.L. Cannonin Augusta, Georgia
Thank you! I am in week 2 of my PhD and feeling a little overwhelmed. This video REALLY helped to make my first task (reviewing the literature) a much more focussed and achievable goal. I am now armed with ideas of how to move forward. Thanks again.
Hi Clarice, building a relationship with one's chair sure makes things easier, to say the least :) How are things going for you in your dissertation work?
This was very encouraging! Thank you so much for providing this guidance Dr. White. I am a visual learner, so I especially appreciated the photos you shared on how to organize research and sources.
Wow Dr. Guy..I am impressed ..& glad that I've come across this video. I've been searching for know-how on how to approach for a systematic literature review and your tutorial had offered me an insight on how to move forward.Thank you so much
Wow, it never felt like an hour lecture. Thank you so much for the Literature Review Matrix. Very useful, so strategic and very easy. I will definitely make one, print out, cut and match. Amazing Dr Guy, OMG, I owe you my success. Thanks loads.
Great guide. This video definitively is a huge help in completing my dissertation. The collection of the sources and organization that you mention is so significant. I feel so pumped up now, I've been feeling a little down lately, thinking that I've reached rock bottom, my literature review was not clicking and I was going back and forth between sources and my writing. I have a significant number of sources; my organization is not the best though, but I can see how to do it now. That motivational intro really got me going..! My committee also told me that I can do it in 9 months if I really concentrate on my work, which I can see that happening now. Thank you Dr. Guy!
Jose, thanks so much for your kind words. I AM So GLAD you feel pumped! It's been about two months since you made this comment (I've been busy finishing this book): How have things been going in the past two months?
I am so glad I am watching your video at the start of my journey. I am committed to completing within the timeline (no struggling/losteness emails to my professors). I enjoyed seeing the colourful sticky notes wall, and here thinking about which wall to convert. I already have two days in a week blocked out, however, I see you recommend three, I will see how that goes. What I know now, I have a better way to use the two days - get busy searching sources, and start feeding my Literature Review Matrix. 5 quotes per source, wow. Thank you Dr. Guy.
Dr Guy, gosh I feel like you were inside my head, understanding exactly where I have been. Sadly, as many other comments indicate, I took too long in finding you, so very much time has been wasted. Also, I am now a little deflated to hear you say "nine months" is how long it took you....I really do not see me going another nine months. I will have to believe that I can do it significantly faster, especially with your help. I am relieved (thrilled really!) to have found such a credible source as you, willing to provide FREE information to aide this ginormous task - THANK YOU!
Hi Gale! Pause a moment here and take a few breaths: appreciate all that brought you to this process in the first place. Something truly good and inspired brought you here: your tenacity did lots of the walking. You are standing at an important chapter of your journey: which direction do you go? Only you can decide -- but don't forget about all that bravery and heart that has led you here and is still here. In all, I am so thank full for your post and reply. I do think that with some deep time commitments, you could get done sooner. Let's talk more about it as this unfolds! Cheers.
Dr. Guy, This is SO much more than "just" a literature review video! It reminds us of the value of life, time, people...family and helps us to sort through those who may derail our thoughts. This presentation is well worth it's time in gold. THANK YOU!
Great talk. I have been searching various sites for guidance and Dr. Guy , you just made is so simple. Your description of sitting there boxing books, typing in Microsoft etc. that me . THANK YOU for a new direction in writing
Dr Guy....this piece of work is truly amazing. I am sooooo glad I found your video (and straight away register myself in your website). You explained the topic so well, crystal clear word for word, and with great intonation. I played the video twice so that I don't missed anything. I have been groping in the dark for the past few months not knowing clearly my roadmap and what I need to do step-by-step. Your building of a house metaphor was very good...and the big items I have learned from this are the steps in lit review and building the matrix. Thank you Dr for taking your time to build such a beautiful piece of work. God bless you.
Such kind words! Thank you so much. What a blessing. Please tell me what other videos I could create to assist you! Blessings to you and your endeavors.
Thanks Dr. Guy. I am currently working on my literature review and this helped me gain valuable insight into a more effective way to organize, research, and put together my literature review.
Excellent Motivation for doctoral learners Dr. Guy E. White. I make a note of all your suggestions and plan to start by reading 5 books or peer review articles per week.

Hi Dr. Guy! thank you so much for taking your time and make such a clear, informative and motivational video! I really appreciate it. I'm from Chile and I'm preparing my dissertation to graduate as an English teacher. This was of great help, thanks again!
RoseeOO Hi Rosee! I'm looking to set up a no-cost virtual workshop for students in Chile who are working on their dissertations. Do you think 10 or more candidates would be interested in such a thing?
Dear Dr. Guy, Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I have found your tips extremely useful and while I have already implemented some of the tips before watching this video, I will be making use of your advice, especially with regards to the organisation aspect of the research that I have collected in my searches. Your video has helped me re-focus my direction and I am thankful that I came across it!
Dear Dr. Guy, I can't begin to share with you the relief I feel after watching your video. I have a lot of your ideas already in place and now have a great plan moving forward. I love the idea of the Literature Matrix and am creating it now! I am just about to start my literature review and now have a clear roadmap. Thank you for sharing your expertise and motivating me to move past my hesitation of not knowing how to take this next step...Literature Review, here I come!!! I'm so thankful I found your videos early in my proposal writing process. God Bless you and your growing family.
Dr. White, Your presentation was extremely informative and all of your key points came together for me. I am an CTU student working on my dissertation and was totally lose. I did not know where or how to began. You have made me more comfortable in my journey. Thank you. I appreciate your explanation of how to begin.
i can't tell you what a life saver this video has been!! the bit about making a table and then cutting the information out and organizing it all is like a visual learner's (such as myself)dream!!! awesome work! Thank YOU!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am in my second year. It is a hybrid program and there is not a lot of "face time" with professors. And I don't always get answers to my emailed questions. Last week, I could not wrap my head around "Theoretical Framework." I found your awesome video on the topic. It cleared up the confusion. Your channel has become an important resource. Well organized and well taught. I just "shared" several links with my cohort members. They are singing your praises too!
+Susan Salvo (Massage Passport) Hi Susan! Clearly, you are one of my most-commenting channelers here :) Thank you! So happy that these videos are helping. That's music to my ears for sure. Send me a question any time :)
Guy E White I'm a postgraduate student - MA student . Your explanation is so clear and useful . I was confused and didn't know how to write my literature review until I watched your video. Many thanks dear Dr.
Thank you, Dr. Guy, for this video and all the work you do to help doctoral students. I'm really not one to make public comments, but I have a much clearer mind and focus as a result of the information you shared. After thinking about what I will absolutely do as a result of this video, I've come up with a few goals. 1. Gather all of the literature for the Lit. Review first. 2. Start my day off with working on my dissertation. 3. Use a program to input my sources for easy reference later. Thanks again!
Dear Mr White, I thank you so much for your videos, I am about to start my master degree thesis in health administration, it is the biggest challenge I am going to have in my life so far. at the moment I am reading and writing about how to write an excellent master thesis, and about 2 subjects (chronic elderly patients counselling, or patients education) I am planning to start the project in March - I highly appreciate all your videos and any additional advice.
I like to think that the original way to review literature (library/paper/post-it notes) is still the best. I actually stopped working on my dissertation for a few months because I could not decide (or understand) what citation manager I should use. I was relieved when you suggested using good ole' EXCEL as a format for organization. I am familiar with it and use it for many of my courses. Thank you again and keep producing these videos! They are encouraging and helpful!
Currently, I am a student at NCU working on my Comprehensive Examination. I am totally stressed out right now! Viewing this has calmed my nerves some! Thank you so much for all of your helpful tips! I look forward to more great info! Thank You!
You are so true about the road mapping. I wrote my introduction/problem statement first and then I was reading for my literature review. It really influences my initial thoughts about my paper. After having this video, things are even more clear. Thank you DR. Guy! God bless.
Thank you for this posting; your style is excellent and demonstrates exactly how to get the flow going. I am just starting the doctoral process at age 61 after a professional career in psychotherapy. I wish I had your site and video available when I first qualified. Many thanks. Baz
Dr. Guy, I agree with you that most PhD students struggle with literature review due to its complexity. As a result, anxiety and panic build up leading to self-inhibition among students. However, with an authority on lit review like you who explains the topic in a simple and comprehensible manner, the topic becomes easy. Therefore people like me get emboldened and encouraged to continue with the dissertation. Thanks so much for your dedication to uplift others. Please continue with your quest for social change. And may God bless you and your family!! Ben Olwe, MSPH
Hi Dr Guy E White...thank you so much for the informative inputs on how dissertation thesis be written... providing some tips in guiding our doctoral journey of writing the best dissertation thesis quickly and well...Godspeed!
I love this Dr. Guy, I am an MSC student and wants to say your video has been a tremendous help to my dissertation writing. I am still writing though and would keep applying the synthesizing table tool to keep my work in shape. Thanks, Alex here in Ghana.
Thank you Dr Guy. I love this video. I've made a lot of the mistakes around communication with Supervisor; and also skipping too far ahead and only to have to come back. Thank you for taking the time to create a road-map.
Hi Lucy. One of my teachers says, "There's always a chance for opening up" I take that to mean that there is always a chance to more open and more loving. Not all doors are all shut. There's always a way, somewhere. So, when things get really hard, remember that is the moment where all the action happens: That's where transformation happens. No one transforms eating cookies and watching Netflix. The action is in the hardship. Here to help.
Dr. Guy, I have a renewed sense of energy since watching this video. You have given me more direction than my current online popular school in which I attend. I wanted to give up today, yes today! I stumbled across your video and feel as though I can finish. Thank you.
Hi, I am a Masters Student in English Studies. After watching your video, I am inspired like never been before. Thank you for taking time to clarify every nook and corner of the project.
Returning to study after many years (almost two decades) I struggled writing my literature review and submitted something I am not happy with but happy that I am back studying. I told my supervisor I would be reworking it - and now I know how to do so. Thank you. Much less daunting now. Thank you.
I'm so thankful that you cover topics that aren't covered as much with nuance and without judgment! It's nice to know that I'm not the only student who had to take extra time to finish a thesis, but it's even better to have solutions for how to get out of that gracefully!
Aloha, Very helpful. I am completing my Comprehensive Exams. I want to complete my Dissertation in 9 months or less. to move forward to continued teaching! You touched on every area I am dealing with now. I will review this several times. Mahalo Judith
Dear Dr. Guy, I wish I watched your advice 6 months ago. I highly appreciate your extremely amazing job. I wish you all successes and happiness in your life. I'll restart my literature review because my last work as someone who spins in a circle.
Great Work. I am doctoral student right now in south of France also having 2 kids and a wife waiting back to my country Pakistan. I be starting my 3rd year of PhD next week. It is really a very helpful video giving lots of tips and tools for doing Hard work but in a smart way. Thanks a lot this video touched me a lot and will be helping to make effective use of available time.
Steve W. here and just getting started on my dissertation. My chair from Northcentral University recommended I review your videos and I was about to submit a second draft of the CP, and actually after watching your videos, wrote him and requested that he give me another week, as the information was seriously the road maps that I had so been seeking. I then looked into the Lit Rev video and know that the map laid out in the video is exactly how my wife and I will be completing our Lit Rev's. Expect some questions from us in the near future. Thank you for producing and sharing such relevant information and paths. ~Fly Safe
Loved this, it crystalised the process and gave me some great ideas how to get my LR done as quickly as possible for my DBA on Coaching in healthcare leadership in UAE. I look forward to listening to all your videos and signing up too.
Dear Dr. Guy. You are the best. Am in Nairobi, Kenya, Africa at 1:00 am glued to my chair. You are very convicting. Especially when you tell to do away with this thing...
The presentation starts with the actual literature review topic at 16:49.
The talking about his life in the video is so distracting and makes others not want to watch his videos. smh
The preamble was not a
distraction for me at but just served to put the whole research process into
context of an integrative life experience. As such, it helped to clarify the
presenter's positionality as a real human being who recognizes the challenges
of committed to family and also to his professional advancement. This kind of
introduction does enable the viewer to appreciate the complexities of the
research journey that is interwoven with one's total set of experiences and thus
cannot be treated as an isolated segment of the individual's life. As a
personal preference, the viewer may choose to skip the preamble and hasten to
the 'meat of the matter'.
+bethhir Thanks for this!

+William Holly William, it is my pleasure. I am so happy to hear that this helped you :)
+MANIMEGALAI RAJENDERAN YES!!!!! :)
Exactly!!
Thank you.
Thank you Dr Guy! I am in my final year of my PHD, but this has really given me clear pointers. Wish I had found this video 2 years ago!
Busola T That means the world to me. Thank you so much for saying that. Send me a question any time!
I've watched this video no less than two time making notes as I go along and pulling new nuggets everytime .... this has helped me tremendously.
Thank you! Dissertation Summer Camp starts tomorrow :) www.thedissertationmentor.com/store/oeL9WYdw
Maybe I’ll see you there!
I loved this video. It is an eye opener for me. I should have known it before. I am rewriting the literature review and struggling for time. I did all that negative stuff. I lost all my time. Now I have to pick up pieces and move forward.
We can do it!
Rohini take heart, I am on the other side of the globe rewriting the literature review, I was soo naive, wasted lots of time but now wiser

I found the collecting and organising part most useful. Specific advice at the end about sources and quotes was also useful.
Rumel, thanks for your kind words. They mean the world to me.
I was stucked in theLiterature Review portion of my assignment. Your video has helped me complete my assignment! Thank you, you're awesome!
marivic schrage Hi Marivic, you made my day.
Omg - Everything you shared in the first 3 1/4 minutes is everything that I have felt and have said to myself on this Master's journey
Thank you for the very practical tips and inspiring stories about your career and your family. I appreciate how you emphasize your first priority.
IACER Baneswor Height You got it! Absolutely. I'd be happy to! Expect some more bite-sized mini content soon.
true... this is sooooo long
goshhh how could you say that dumb shittt...when you are just watching in his channel... and please if you calling it that long talking...bitch that called encouragement... now just a liitle advice of you, next time around you should practice or improve and focus on your patient because im telling you patient is one of a thing that will help your dumb brain in the future realizing you cant put things up all easily in your way ...and also include appreciation word..
I’m stunned by your comment!
*here
Dr. Guy
So, do you have a shorter video that touches on what needs to be done like a, b, c, 1, 2, 3.
No, but I soon will! Thanks for the suggestion!
I just discovered you in May 2024! Will be going through your videos. What you said about what this dissertation is preventing me from (spending quality time with my wife) really hit deep. Thank you for putting out this awesome instructional video content!
So happy to hear! Our program is open if you’d like to learn more :) www.thedissertationmentor.com/store/oeL9WYdw
Dr. Guy, thank you for the tips and lecture on dissertation writing. It is very informative and to the point. I will re-use it and recommend it to my peers. Blessing Wiwuga Orage
Thank you for your kind words, Blessing.
Hi Valentino! Love hearing that! What questions do you still have? Can you think of another video that I could make that would be helpful?
Hey Dr. Guy,
Wow, thanks for the email.
Thank you so much for the encouragement. My eyes are actually teary. You're a great teacher and most definitely a most awesome father!
Can you please make a video on methodology? Especially for Social Sciences - Survey and Interviews as methods
Love the "roadmap" comment. That is exactly what I'm trying to do. So happy that I could be of help! Thank you for watching!!!
Dr Guy, I broke out in laughter in the first 5 minutes: You can read minds.....
+Stoffel Nel This FREAKING thing!!!!!
I am about to apply for my MPhil program, and as part of my preparation to face the challenge of writing dissertation, I sort to research about ways to write a good dissertation. And I am glade I found your lecture on youtub to guide me. Just to say am grateful for that piece of lecture. Thank you Dr. E. Guy
Dr. Guy,
This video was great! I was lost before looking at this video. Everything you said about not feeling adequate, this is more than me was correct. I was like I feel "dumb" and I am stuck. Now I have a better understanding. Thanks for the video. I do have a question for you.
Wow I can relate to this 100%
Hi Dr. Guy! I am in the beginning of my dissertation process. Your video gave me a clear and realistic view of how I am going to go about completing my dissertation and earn my doctoral degree. Thank you!
this was great!!! but we are told the 5 years previous to graduation.
+Hyacinth Kinley Agreed. Great guide!
+Review Boss Thank you, Review Boss!
12:16 where everything begun ^^
Excellent, succinct, and practical guidance! I enjoyed hearing how your doctoral journey fit in with your family life. Thank you for sharing!
+Suzanne Bright Happy to hear that! I'm part of your doctoral team (at least here on this channel) :) Let me know how I can help.
Just about to start my Literature Review and watching this has helped me so much, it has inspired me so much too! Thanks a ton, God bless you and your beautiful family.
+Anna Joel Anna! That is music to my ears! Thank you so much!
I am in 5 week of my first semester of my doctoral program and I will follow all the advice you have given, I am so excited to get started. I have my literature paper due in 2 weeks and now I have a much better understanding of how to begin. Thank you!
Hi Barbara. Now that you are in your program for about 3+ months, how are things going?
Your presentations are helping me figure out my life, LOL. My situation is unique. However, I do not want to neglect everyone in my life because of my dissertation. Thus, it is helpful and insightful when you discuss your family at the beginning of the videos. I've watched a number of your videos and the language is easily understood. Your grounded and focused on the subject matter, which provides great instruction. I understand the process better as well as knowing what will be required of me. I appreciate your approach and honesty.
Thanks,
John
YES, EXACTLY! no clear view, nothing clicks.... I watch your videos and I see and then watch again. and have an AH HA moment...ty
Josphine, you are very welcome! Thanks for the kind words.
Bro your passion for everything you do is just amazing. You're not ashamed to express the love for your family and the Dissertation mentorship.
Dr. White, you have nailed it! I have looked at every book, website, etc about this "mystical" process to the point of cynicism until now! Thank you.
Francie, if you loved this, you'll love my book "The Dissertation Warrior." Have you checked out my website? Peace. Thanks for your comments.
Thank you Dr. Guy for putting back in me somehow the energy I need to work on my dissertation....
Thank you! I am in week 2 of my PhD and feeling a little overwhelmed. This video REALLY helped to make my first task (reviewing the literature) a much more focussed and achievable goal. I am now armed with ideas of how to move forward. Thanks again.
Julia Taylor You are so welcome, Julia! I love to help bring clarity. That's my purpose on this planet! Please send me a question any time!
The presentation was very enlightening. I appreciated the comments about appropriate communication with the dissertation chair.
I've been searching for know-how on how to approach for a systematic literature review and your tutorial had offered me an insight on how to move forward.Thank you so much
Greetings, Adeel. So happy to hear your kind words. Thank you. Shall I create another video on another topic? Ideas?
Guy.
the benchmarks and timeframes were very helpful. Also, the framework of sources and the outline provided great direction.
Cheers.
Dr Guy, this is wonderful. I am not even doing a dissertation yet but I am looking forward to it now . Thank you
Dr. Guy, This is SO much more than "just" a literature review video! It reminds us of the value of life, time, people...family and helps us to sort through those who may derail our thoughts. This presentation is well worth it's time in gold. THANK YOU!
SwabRMU, thanks for saying that. Without purpose, I don't know why anyone would want to even do a dissertation. Thanks for the affirmation!
Great talk. I have been searching various sites for guidance and Dr. Guy , you just made is so simple. Your description of sitting there boxing books, typing in Microsoft etc. that me . THANK YOU for a new direction in writing
Dear Dr. Guy - Thank you, good sir! I am just starting my doctoral journey and you are providing great comfort during some very uncertain days!
Lyle, thank you for your kind words here. Love working with you.
RoseeOO Thank you for your kind words, by the way.
Dear Dr. Guy,
Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Kimberly, thanks for the love and the kind words. I'm here to help. Reach out to me any time and I'll help!
Dr. White, Your presentation was extremely informative and all of your key points came together for me. I am an CTU student working on my dissertation and was totally lose. I did not know where or how to began. You have made me more comfortable in my journey. Thank you. I appreciate your explanation of how to begin.
+Sheila Verde Sheila! You made my morning. Thank you.
i can't tell you what a life saver this video has been!! the bit about making a table and then cutting the information out and organizing it all is like a visual learner's (such as myself)dream!!! awesome work! Thank YOU!
Thank you! Thank you!
Thank You!
+Debbie Pena Hi Debbie :) So happy to hear this! Send me a question any time!
You are so true about the road mapping. I wrote my introduction/problem statement first and then I was reading for my literature review. It really influences my initial thoughts about my paper. After having this video, things are even more clear.
Thank you DR. Guy!
God bless.
So happy to hear that, Kinza. This was the start in my road mapping journey. The Dissertation Warrior book is where it took me. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you for this posting; your style is excellent and demonstrates exactly how to get the flow going. I am just starting the doctoral process at age 61 after a professional career in psychotherapy. I wish I had your site and video available when I first qualified. Many thanks. Baz
Dr. Guy,
I agree with you that most PhD students struggle with literature review due to its complexity.

What an amazing way of simplifying this Doctoral journey ..Thanks Dr Guy .. your videos give me hope ...
Thank you.
How are things working out now that a couple months have passed?
Been busy on my position paper, which was easier thanks to watching this video. Once that is submitted I'm back to my lit review. Thanks.
I'm so thankful that you cover topics that aren't covered as much with nuance and without judgment! It's nice to know that I'm not the only student who had to take extra time to finish a thesis, but it's even better to have solutions for how to get out of that gracefully!
This video is still changing lives in 2019!
Aloha,
Very helpful. I am completing my Comprehensive Exams. I want to complete my Dissertation in 9 months or less. to move forward to continued teaching! You touched on every area I am dealing with now. I will review this several times. Mahalo

Steve W. here and just getting started on my dissertation. ~Fly Safe
+West Valley Rebels 2015 Who is that chair at NorthCentral? I want to send them flowers or food!!!!!
+Guy E White My Chair is Dr. Thomas McLaughlin at Northcentral University.
