+bethhir Thanks for helping the viewers. Sometimes, mindset, background, family, and the like are not important to the discussion -- for me, it's sometimes hard to bypass these subjects. This was one of my first videos many years ago. My latest jump straight in :) Thanks for watching! Thanks for your comment! Send me a question any time!

+bethhir Thank you so much for putting this up. It should never take someone 16 mins to get to how to do a review. The talking about his life in the video is so distracting and makes others not want to watch his videos. smh

      The preamble was not a
distraction for me at but just served to put the whole research process into
context of an integrative life experience. As such, it helped to clarify the
presenter's positionality as a real human being who recognizes the challenges
of committed to family and also to his professional advancement. This kind of
introduction does enable the viewer to appreciate the complexities of the
research journey that is interwoven with one's total set of experiences and thus
cannot be treated as an isolated segment of the individual's life. As a
personal preference, the viewer may choose to skip the preamble and hasten to
      the 'meat of the matter'.

Your video not only clarifies much of what was troubling me in moving forward, but also helped relieve some of the stress I was feeling about difficulties I was having. Hearing that feeling lost, confused, ill prepared, and overburdened are typical in this kind of endeavor really let me know that I'm not as lost, confused, ill prepared, and overburdened as I actually feel. Thank you for taking your time to help people like us to complete this daunting task.

Man!.. I have enrolled in a Doctoral program at NCU and failed to complete my dissertation. I wish my chair would provided me with the mentor and guide as you have stated in your video here that I needed to be successful in my dissertation. I have come all the way by passing every single class, completed my comprehensive exam to my dissertation, spent a lot of money for the I call "my life journey" and failed my Doctoral dissertation and not completed my program. If she would just gave me a phone call, or personal email and direct me in the right direction or to your video, I'll successfully completed my dissertation and completed my doctoral program. Thank you Dr. Guy for your explanation. My next journey I will not be the same and I will be more ready and be successful. Boun Xiong.

I am 58 years old man, English as a second language. Now decided to carry my lifelong dream of possessing a doctoral degree. I was hoping one of my two children could go forward to earn an advanced level, to meet my wish, but both, for now, are not concerned. And that prompts me to go on at this age. God willing, I am embarking on my first class June 21 at University of Phoenix online for “Business Management and Organizational Leadership”. Listening to your free advice “how to write a literature” really helpful. As I stated I did not see the first class, but when I’m expecting anything that could hold valuable information, here I found yours, and I am grateful having it. Thank you so much.

Thank you for affirming some of the things I have already been doing (instinctively) and for adding a few more tips that I can use like doing the matrix. I've struggled with how to organize all the materials I have gathered in the last few months. Most of all I appreciate your acknowledging the feelings that I've gone through in this journey--isolation, confusion and self-doubt. It is good to know that I am not the only one who felt that way. Thank you so much! Am ready to move forward again.

I am the happiest person probably today on my journey for a strong and scientific research as a Ph.D. Candidate. I am so inspired by the lecture, particularly the idea of developing a matrix for the literature review, reading 5 books per week and recording 5 quotes are the key messages for me now. Thank you very much. I have just been reading throughout without getting anything done. I am also happy to know that I should read old books as well, a lot of people said to me that I should concentrate on the new articles and books in my field. I am a student of Economics with a concentration on firms level analysis on International trade and its implications for developing economies. I am signing up for your class now...

Really,I'll be using every point that you made as I go forward. The in and out box resonates with me. I've been using large grocery carry all bags as I bring in books from our library inter-loan system and another for the books I'm using for courses. Marking sections of interest and relevance with post-its, reading those sections and gathering quotes, entering the info on a spread sheet and then cutting the sheets into individual strips for organization, finally pasting them into a coherent and relevant organization is all very fantastic. The struggle I've had with papers all these years could have been greatly lessened and my time used much more effectively and meaningfully if these kind of guideline to writing papers was taught in high school. I'm WAY past high school but I find this information a pleasurable relief as I continue my academic journey. You've done many a great service. I'm passing the links to your videos on to my older sister who's in the process of preparing her proposal for her Ed.D, as well as to my own (grown children) as they contemplate continuing their education. Blessings to you and your family.

      Hey Dr. Guy,
Wow, thanks for the email. As I mentioned earlier I found your video personal and informative. I plan on sharing your insights and video with others.
As for additional videos, I think it would be beneficial to help students understand how to navigate the dissertation process to mitigate frustrations. What I mean is; how to manage relationships with your Chair, committee members, etc in order for them to advocate on your behalf and move forward. Help remove the ambiguity and hazing (i.e. tough love) that come out of this process. How to get those valuable nuggets of information that you share in your videos (i.e. how to communicate with your chair). Finally, i am working on a DBA with a for profit online institution and I find the professors seemed to be stretched very thin with full time jobs and other teaching assignments.
      Thanks again?

Wonderful outline. After struggling for the past year on the Lit Review, I managed to formulate something similar to what you outline here. I gathered the literature, I had it all tabbed, highlighted, and inked up but could not figure out how to best compile these pieces to form the Lit Review.
The part I really could have used was how to cut and paste the components into similar topics to form the outline of the Lit Review. I would love to see a more detailed outline of this.
I believe I have a good foundation on the Lit Review and I know it will need a bit more work. I will grab my binders and get the five quotes per piece of literature, so if you have any pointers on how to then cut and group these pieces I would find it extremely helpful. This is a wonderful video.

+Bruce Redekop Hi Bruce. Thank you so much for your kind words and for telling me a bit about your process. When you have everything in your excel matrix, you can then sort by category, subcategory, and then by year. With that, you get a basic history of your quotes by sub category. Then, if you are following this model to the full end, you can then place like-ideas next to one another. This allows you to see what ideas can be synthesized together. Send me a question any time, Bruce!

+Hyacinth Kinley While the basis of the most current research should be the last 5 years, clearly you must reach back beyond 5 years to appreciate and discuss the history of the literature. Background usually can exceed the 5 year threshold. Research forming the basis of your problem statement should be in the 3-7 year sweet-spot.

Hi Dr Guy, I love the process but mostly appreciate the guidelines and targets ie. Five sources a week x 5 quotes from each source which can produce 400 quotes in 16 weeks. You have no idea how much of a difference your video's are making to give me a conceptual picture on how to proceed. I am more confident. Once again. Great work. Keep it coming, and appreciate the fact that you care about me even though you have not met me. Blessings to you and your family :)

Your presentations are helping me figure out my life, LOL. My situation is unique. However, I do not want to neglect everyone in my life because of my dissertation. Thus, it is helpful and insightful when you discuss your family at the beginning of the videos. I've watched a number of your videos and the language is easily understood. Your grounded and focused on the subject matter, which provides great instruction. I understand the process better as well as knowing what will be required of me. I appreciate your approach and honesty.

Great guide. This video definitively is a huge help in completing my dissertation. The collection of the sources and organization that you mention is so significant. I feel so pumped up now, I've been feeling a little down lately, thinking that I've reached rock bottom, my literature review was not clicking and I was going back and forth between sources and my writing. I have a significant number of sources; my organization is not the best though, but I can see how to do it now. That motivational intro really got me going..! My committee also told me that I can do it in 9 months if I really concentrate on my work, which I can see that happening now. Thank you Dr. Guy!

I am so glad I am watching your video at the start of my journey. I am committed to completing within the timeline (no struggling/losteness emails to my professors). I enjoyed seeing the colourful sticky notes wall, and here thinking about which wall to convert. I already have two days in a week blocked out, however, I see you recommend three, I will see how that goes. What I know now, I have a better way to use the two days - get busy searching sources, and start feeding my Literature Review Matrix. 5 quotes per source, wow. Thank you Dr. Guy.

Dr Guy, gosh I feel like you were inside my head, understanding exactly where I have been. Sadly, as many other comments indicate, I took too long in finding you, so very much time has been wasted. Also, I am now a little deflated to hear you say "nine months" is how long it took you....I really do not see me going another nine months. I will have to believe that I can do it significantly faster, especially with your help. I am relieved (thrilled really!) to have found such a credible source as you, willing to provide FREE information to aide this ginormous task - THANK YOU!

    Dr. Guy,
I agree with you that most PhD students struggle with literature review due to its complexity. As a result, anxiety and panic build up leading to self-inhibition among students. However, with an authority on lit review like you who explains the topic in a simple and comprehensible manner, the topic becomes easy. Therefore people like me get emboldened and encouraged to continue with the dissertation. Thanks so much for your dedication to uplift others. Please continue with your quest for social change. No one transforms eating cookies and watching Netflix. The action is in the hardship. Here to help.
