I am now in the process of submitting my preliminary research idea to the university after being accepted into the PhD program, and this video has really helped me get started!
Thanks for the video! It's long BUT concise, I'm very grateful for that, most videos like this I stop watching after ~5 minutes. I'm getting started with my undergrad dissertation now (well, starting to get serious with it, not just starting thinking about it) and I'll certainly use some of the tips you've shared here. All the best!
This has been extremely helpful! I was making notes whilst watching your video. You have made the process less daunting and I can finally start the process of finding a topic that I will be able to enjoy writing about. Thank you so much!
Dear sir, I just found your youtube video upon looking for the tips to choose topics for my PhD dissertation. You literally make me cry silently as I feel your expertise on uncovering and explaining each steps in detail has indirectly solved my problems (most if not all) which I didn't know the causes and that I feel emphatized. With that, I say THANK YOU. :') P/s: Still long way to to go and a lot to learn, I will keep on checking your other videos and I have subscribed.
I cannot believe this is so simple after I scratched my head after attending many workshops. I wish the lecturers can copy this method of presentation. Simplicity is the best indeed.
Thank you very much for this. One of the best presentations. I'm a teacher from Sri Lanka trying to do a thesis on how technology impacts on improving grades in traditional examinations. I'll definitely check out the other videos as well. Thank you for all of this!!!

Fantastic Video 100% recommend. Viewers don't be daunted by the length. It is extremely insightful, helpful and detailed. I will be watching and probably rewatching all of your videos! One suggestion Grad Coach is time stamping the relevant steps in the description i.e Step 1: 1:43 Get a basic understanding of the research process/theory. Step 2: 3:56 Understand exactly what your university expects from your research. Step 3: 11:02 Identify your broad interest areas. Step 4: 14:34 Review past dissertations/theses in those interest areas to narrow your thinking down to more niche areas. Step 5: 18:40 Review the literature for each niche area to gain an understanding of the current state of knowledge. Step 6: 25:04 Identify specific research topics and research questions using 3 techniques. Step 7: 27:37 Evaluate each potential topic against 7 key criteria and make a decision. Elevator Pitch What: Digital Colonialism by Big Tech in the Global South. Why is it original: Not much research done on topic coupled huge growth of web services in the Global South and lack of digital literacy there. Why it is important: Many governments in the Global South don't have ability to effectively moderate Tech Giants and their influence on populations. (This could be argued governments worldwide but I am focusing on the Global South). With walled access to the Internet, extreme content (via these platforms) like hate speech can spread extremely quickly online. This in turn polarises views and creates echo chambers that that deepen the divide between ethics groups in these societies. Which also leads to Mobs and violence IRL. How will I explain the research? Compare how different countries in the Global South have dealt with Digital Colonialism.
Thanks for the summary and time stamping, John. Appreciated! Re your elevator pitch. The topic sounds interesting. I feel that the "what" could be more specific. At the moment it's quite generic. What specifically about digital colonialism by big tech in the global south will you investigate? The abuse of power, the threat of monopolies, etc, etc. Similarly, the methodology (how) could be more specific. What specific methodology will you use to analyse, compare and contract the approaches. Hope that helps!
Hi Derek. you have such an amazing gift as a couch, teacher, and lecturer! Your calm way of explaining the most difficult themes are truly inspiring and beyond helpful. WOW! Thank you.
Thank you so much for this! I've been searching so many videos on youtube about how to choose a research topic for my undergrad thesis. I've been worrying for months now and am very thankful to have found this video made comprehensively. Now, I finally have a guide for choosing my potential research topic while utilizing my interest in my course.
Thank u so much. i bandoned and ignored my thesis work for years already due to difficulty in RRL. After watching ur videos, i started to have new insights and ideas on how to start again. God bless
Hey, guys thank you for the video it was very informative. I hope you are still assisting when it comes to the elevator pitch. Mt study is about total quality management in higher education which aims to evaluate innovation, create a competitive advantage whilst ensuring customer(student) satisfaction. The is not much studies done using these constructs in our country. the importance of it is to measure if students are satisfied with overall package given to them within the institution. This will be a quantitative study.
Hi Mfundo Thanks for joining the conversation. Regarding your research topic - I have two suggestions: 1 - We need greater clarify about what your study is about. You've mentioned TWM in higher education, as well as innovation, competitive advantage and customer satisfaction. However, its not really clear what the focus of your research is. For example, are you investigating TQM's ability to drive those outcomes? Or are you interested in looking at how a focus on all three can contribute towards TQM? At the moment, its not clear what the connection is between TQM and the rest of the aspects outlined. 2 - You mentioned that there are "not much studies done using these constructs in our country". That's a good start, but you need to justify what the existing studies (done in other countries) may not be applicable in your country. What are the core differences that might make the existing research less valid in your context? Answering that is important to ensure your topic is clearly justified. I hope that helps! Good luck refining your topic and writing up your research proposal.
At last, I found you-excellent explanation. No doubt the roadmap you have explained will take time to follow but the good thing it will be directed to a good research topic. I am sure it will help me. Thanks a lot, Grad Coach, for such an in-depth explanation.
This is very clear and helpful. I recommend it to anyone on the path to a thesis or dissertation. And free help when we follow the steps to arriving at your elevator pitch! Thanks so much for offering this. I'll return when I am at that stage!
So helpful, thank you so much, i have a question when you have a new topic that has not been dealt with before as the current case of Covid 19 how can we conduct the lit review ?
It depends on what you're researching. Generally, there's something comparable that you use as a basis for your review. For example, if you're researching people's attitudes toward the crisis, you can look at research about people's attitudes towards previous crises.
Thank you for this video. It's interesting and informative topic. My question, if I found suggestions for further research in recent papers, but I don't know if somebody has already taken these suggestions and researched or has been researching on, however, I couldn't find the researched gap the latest online or it might not have published yet. what I should do in this case?
Hi Jawad Its a good idea to search Google Scholar and use the date filtering option to assess the latest published literature. Of course, this doesn't cover 100% of all research, but it should help you identify anything major.
@@GradCoach Thank you so much for your reply. Is it possible to contact the researchers by email or through research gate, for example, and ask them if they are working on the recommendation for further study that they stated in previous research or they know someone doing so?

Thanks for sharing this systematic approach and giving me more confidence on narrowing down on a thesis topic. Hi Alicia Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, this sounds more like a business idea proposal than a research proposal. That's a good start, but you need to justify what the existing studies (done in other countries) may not be applicable in your country.
