    Fantastic Video 100% recommend. Viewers don't be daunted by the length. It is extremely insightful, helpful and detailed. I will be watching and probably rewatching all of your videos! One suggestion Grad Coach is time stamping the relevant steps in the description i.e
    Step 1: 1:43 Get a basic understanding of the research process/theory.
    Step 2: 3:56 Understand exactly what your university expects from your research.
    Step 3: 11:02 Identify your broad interest areas.
    Step 4: 14:34 Review past dissertations/theses in those interest areas to narrow your thinking down to more niche areas.
    Step 5: 18:40 Review the literature for each niche area to gain an understanding of the current state of knowledge.
    Step 6: 25:04 Identify specific research topics and research questions using 3 techniques.
    Step 7: 27:37 Evaluate each potential topic against 7 key criteria and make a decision.
    Elevator Pitch
    What: Digital Colonialism by Big Tech in the Global South.
    Why is it original: Not much research done on topic coupled huge growth of web services in the Global South and lack of digital literacy there.
    Why it is important: Many governments in the Global South don't have ability to effectively moderate Tech Giants and their influence on populations. (This could be argued governments worldwide but I am focusing on the Global South). With walled access to the Internet, extreme content (via these platforms) like hate speech can spread extremely quickly online. This in turn polarises views and creates echo chambers that that deepen the divide between ethics groups in these societies. Which also leads to Mobs and violence IRL.
    How will I explain the research? Compare how different countries in the Global South have dealt with Digital Colonialism.

    • @GradCoach
      @GradCoach  4 года назад

      Thanks for the summary and time stamping, John. Appreciated!
      Re your elevator pitch. The topic sounds interesting. I feel that the "what" could be more specific. At the moment it's quite generic. What specifically about digital colonialism by big tech in the global south will you investigate? The abuse of power, the threat of monopolies, etc, etc.
      Similarly, the methodology (how) could be more specific. What specific methodology will you use to analyse, compare and contract the approaches.
      Hope that helps!

    Hey, guys thank you for the video it was very informative.
    I hope you are still assisting when it comes to the elevator pitch.
    Mt study is about total quality management in higher education which aims to evaluate innovation, create a competitive advantage whilst ensuring customer(student) satisfaction. The is not much studies done using these constructs in our country. the importance of it is to measure if students are satisfied with overall package given to them within the institution. This will be a quantitative study.

    • @GradCoach
      @GradCoach  4 года назад +7

      Hi Mfundo
      Thanks for joining the conversation.
      Regarding your research topic - I have two suggestions:
      1 - We need greater clarify about what your study is about. You've mentioned TWM in higher education, as well as innovation, competitive advantage and customer satisfaction. However, its not really clear what the focus of your research is. For example, are you investigating TQM's ability to drive those outcomes? Or are you interested in looking at how a focus on all three can contribute towards TQM? At the moment, its not clear what the connection is between TQM and the rest of the aspects outlined.
      2 - You mentioned that there are "not much studies done using these constructs in our country". That's a good start, but you need to justify what the existing studies (done in other countries) may not be applicable in your country. What are the core differences that might make the existing research less valid in your context? Answering that is important to ensure your topic is clearly justified.
      I hope that helps! Good luck refining your topic and writing up your research proposal.

    Thanks for sharing this systematic approach and giving me more confidence on narrowing down on a thesis topic.
    Here's my elevator pitch: I want to develop a context-based natural language processing model that excels at word segmentation issue for mandarin. This topic is unique because it models after a psychology theory of communication; current state-of-the art models (including LLM, deep learning models) still struggle with ambiguous phrasing and carrying on a good conversation flow. This topic is unique because of the sheer numbers of mandarin speakers that could benefit from having a good NLP model, & can cross train other similar languages.

      Hi Alicia
      Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, this sounds more like a business idea proposal than a research proposal. This may be perfectly fine is that's what your university/program is looking for, but I can't comment on it as a research topic per se. To do so, I'd need to understand your specific research aims and research questions, as well as your intended methodology.

    I couldn't graduate in 2009 with Masters in Public Administration (MPH) because of this research despite the fact I finished all the course work modules and as a result of that I ended up exited with Honours. By this time around I won't give up with MBA in Healthcare Management because this is my ticket to the corporate world...Big up to you Derek and I will keep in touch!
