Having worked at Sierra during most of the 90s, I was a PC gamer through and through. Didn't own any consoles in the 90s... hence the reason why I bring in experts like The Immortal John Hancock.
Neat observation. probably how they easily named the character from taking it from their company capcom. Also, capcoms name comes from shortening their actual company’s full name: capsule computers.
More Hidden Gems for Super Nintendo including uncommon 3rd Party Controllers! Games Shown: QBert 3 The Peace Keepers Wolf Child Kendo Rage Captain Commando Firepower 2000 Shadowrun Biometal Stealth Controller Messiah Wireless Capcom Arcade Stick What are some of the more interesting controllers for the SNES?
Well dood. If you suck at Q-bert you probably haven´t tried hoging the cabinet in a 45 degree angle? Same goes for a controller on emulation on a modern system. Hold that controller in a 45 degree angle. A world of difference, I promise.
Philip Wilcox I think he mentioned Phalanx in another list somewhere, but I'm not *completely* sure about that. It has to be mentioned for the box art alone, though.
I know about it, but due to time limitations, we went with just a small portion of the games that I pulled for this series. We all are going to have hidden gems that we want covered. Some had to make the cut.
In regards to Peace Keepers, that trilogy consists of Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers, and Peace Keepers. Glad to see it make the list, it's an awesome game.
Jason it was a pleasure to have met you,Paul and John at the Portland Gaming Expo. I would like to thank all three of you guys on taking the time to chat me. I admit being star struck to have met all three you guys in person. Your panel was both AWESOME and informative. I would also like to thank you all for the free game I received at the panel that was xbox's 007 Night Fire. Paul actually flipped in my direction and I was very happy catch it. John thank you for DVD on collecting. Rock on
I'm playing through Shadowrun Returns on the iPad right now. Are you familiar with that new game? How does it compare to the Genesis version? I heard it might be the spiritual successor to that
Love this segment of your show! I just started my SNES collection and this is a great way to learn about the systems hidden gems. Thanks, keep up the great work and keep them coming!
It's funny to see Captain Commando in this list when actually it was very famous here in Brazil during several years. We could easily find this arcade around here, and people loved it, as for Cadillacs and Dinossaurs, another famous one that was not ported to the snes. Excelent video by the way...
I found this channel yesterday when i was watching cgr. I love this channel now, so far this is the only channel i have watched where i will watch the ads. Keep up the good work
One game that I liked that wasn't on the list was "Brain Lord." It is an action RPG with a top down view and a heavy emphasis on puzzle solving. "Brain Lord" is (in my opinion) Enix's (now Square Enix) take on the Zelda series. Very good game and worth checking out. :)
I forgot all about Brain Lord! I remember me and my brother renting it a few times but can't remember much about the game other than I loved it. I had no idea it was obscure in any way.
The three games in this trilogy by Jaleco were named Rushing Beat, Rushing Beat Ran, and Rushing Beat Shura in Japan. Their US names were Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers, and The Peace Keepers, respectively. Although I hated the moronic robot enemy and cartoon character icons in Rushing Beat Shura, I found it moronic that the music was cut from The Peace Keepers (yes, there was music in the game and it was pretty good). However, aside from enemy names and some cut scenes, Rival Turf remained unchanged and you could actually access the full and unchanged game of Rushing Beat Ran through Brawl Brothers legitimately through a secret code. I also owned The Peace Keepers.
I always forget about the MSX. I have some friends that fullfill my MSX needs. Super hard to collect for(have to buy stuff online mostly now). Thanks for the background on the Valis.
One of the best hidden gems I ever played was an r-type style game called U.N. Squadron. Awesome game. Upgradeable plains and bombs made it one of my favorite games as a kid, you should check it out.
I liked the extra at the end where you showed some really unique and cool controllers. I think the hidden gem series is my favorite out or your videos. I would like to see another for the original PlayStation and Xbox if you have enough material for that. Keep up the awesome work on this channel!
Firepower 2000 was called Silkworm IV on the Amiga and what made it awesome, is the levels were streamed from disk, so you didn't have to wait for the next level to load.
Tradewest's Plok (for the music alone) and Soldiers of Fortune (Chaos Engine) are two "hidden gems" worth checking out. And Shadowrun SNES is one of my all-time favs.
What I love about SNES and Genesis; even if the same game or series was released on both systems, they often offered completely different experiences, unlike today's multi-plats.
Glad you enjoyed the Expo and our Panel. If you have a question you'd like answered, record an AUDIO QUESTION with your phone/computer and send it to our podcast: AllGenGamers (dot) com
These hidden gems videos are my absolute favorite videos to watch. I didn’t think there was anything left to discover on the Super Nintendo and man was I wrong! I tried a few of these games you guys discussed and I had a ton of fun. Thank you for reigniting my love of video games MJR and John Hancock love this channel! 👍
I would love to, but I am not the editor, nor have the time to pump out a consistent video time after time. I would much rather guest on MJR's and just have some silly fun :)
I think you need to bring John Hancock to the show more often. I feel like people are knocking him pretty bad about being awkward but I think he's a pretty funny and likable guy. Also he does look like Billy Mays and when your name is John Hancock you just ooze awesome.
Just found an arcade controller for the MSX series of machines. It was used in arcades to a cabinet that had a MSX machine inside and primary for Pachinko games, popular in Japan. The controller is a Pasoko-1000, and was listed as junk, I am just uploading a video where I show how I repaired it. Great series with John, some really good picks in this part. The Valis series started on the MSX computers (although the 1st game is not that good).
I actually glad to see kendo's rage make the list, I haven't been able to own the game myself, but its definitely high on my priority list when I start collecting for the snes.
There's a nice little SNES game called On The Ball that plays like a 2D version of Monkey Ball - you rotate the maze to roll the marble to the exit. Was a Taito arcade game and it's ported really well to the SNES. Works great with the standard controller but it also supports the SNES mouse controller.
The brawlers from the "trilogy" are "Rival Turf", "Brawl Brothers" and the last of them "The Peace Keepers", fun games with awesome soundtrack. I dont know if The peace keepers is related to the other two, but the others, yes they are.
If I remember correctly the Peace Keepers brawler had a Battle Royal feature for up to 4 players. You could also go through the options and change the colors of the characters in the game. No joke, you could turn the hero green or the big dude with a mohawk pink. Fun stuff.
I had about 100 SNES games when I was a kid. Out of all three videos I only owned two of the gems he presented. Pac Attack and Firepower 2000. Firepower was great, very difficult. I barely got past the first stage.
Another great video guys. I liked that you gave the Capcom arcade stick some love there at the end. There are a lot of crazy arcade sticks out there for the SNES, but the truth is that most of them suck balls. The Battle Station II, the Champonship Pro, and the Capcom sticks are some of the only ones that hold up to this day. Micro switches for the win! Keep up the great work guys. Great video!
ShadowRun on SNES was the definitive version. I've owned the snes version since it was released and couldn't stand the genesis version. ShadowRun returns was heavily based on the snes version as this was the most popular. Enough with my rant. Keep up the great work mate :)
I am both speechless and forever grateful, 2 games I've been trying to figure out the title for from my childhood I found today. Bio Metal was sooo good (also hard) been trying to figure out the title for years. That and Musya from the second Snes hidden gems video, 1 Million Thank you's to John! It's so hard to find a game when all you remember is "well it's a space shooter on snes...it had cool music..."
Kendo Rage is fun. Wolfchild looks cool, I've definitely seen it before. I only know Captain Commando because he was in the first MvC game, or at least the Dreamcast port... Shadow Run's become kind of a cult classic now. Cool lists, would have liked to see Wild Guns, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, or Metal Warriors on one of these.
Ever since realizing I can use my PS4 controller to control my cellphone emulators I've been eating these games up!!! I love it!!! more more more please!!
The Peace Keepers is called in japan Rushing Beat the trilogy is the one I mention RB Ran and RB Shura that is peace keepers all of them where release in US but with different names the first one is Rival Turf, second is Brawl Brothers just in case some is looking for them. The other game Kendo Rage is called in japan Makeruna Makendo and there are two games the first one is the platformer and the second is a vs fighter. Great video guys.
Glad you have props to Shadowrun! I would have mentioned it if you didn't. Great unsung gem on the SNES. I'd like to mention the Breath of Fire games; BoF 1 & 2 came out for the SNES, later ported to the GBA. They're excellent JRPGs made by Capcom. If you like classic console RPGs, I'd highly recommend both games. Another game I like is Drakkhen. It's a launch title for the SNES and it's an RPG more along the line of D&D. It's not for everyone, but it you like tabletop RPGs, you should like it.
No one ever talks about "B.O.B." on both SNES and Genesis. Awesome platformer. Robot with cool upgrades and different weapons. Really good looking. Awesome hidden gem!
@MetalJesusRocks, Another great video! I've been watching your channel now for several weeks and I love it. You put out so much good info and have interesting guests who are fun to watch and listen to. I'm also a huge Star Wars fan, if you couldn't tell by my username lol. I just wanted to mention a hidden gem of my own, Gradius III. It's a side scrolling space shooter made by Konami and has great game play and an awesome soundtrack. Keep up the great videos!
It wasn't in this part, but.. I'd like to thank you guys for suggesting Peace Keepers. It is honestly just like Streets of Rage but for the SNES. It's not QUITE as good as SoR, but it's still fun, and has the same style gameplay. Beat em ups (or Brawlers as you guys call 'em) is one of my favorite genres. SoR is also one of my favorites of the genre. So finding a game similar to SoR for the SNES is fucking GREAT. I AM emulating right now simply for price and convenience.(Plus I don't see emulation as the spawn of Satan like some collectors do. It's a simple, quick, and easy way to play games that I can't afford or otherwise wouldn't be able to play. Plus with a USB SNES controller, and a nice NTSC filter, it feels almost identical to the real thing.) But I do have my actual SNES hooked up, I just don't have the money to buy games for it at the moment. (Luckily I still have most of my games from back in the day, including a boxed copy of Chrono Trigger...and 3 Link to the Pasts for some reason.) Now, I don't plan to buy tons of SNES games anymore. I'm not a collector. I just enjoy the games. But I definitely will have to look up Peace Keepers. (As well as check out what the others in the series were, as mentioned in the same video.) To add my own to the list. I'd like to mention Batman Returns. It's not exactly unknown considering well, it's Batman. But it's a simple, but fun beat 'em up that barely ever gets mentioned. It's one of my most played games from back in the day, even if I could never beat the level with all the fire.
"Captain Commando" is the reason the company is named Capcom. The word Capcom is derived from taking the first 3 letters from both the words Captain & Commando and putting them together.
Er, no. Other way around. 'Captain Commando' was derived from Capcom's name. CapCom actually stood for Capsule Computers back when it was a subsidiary of another company. Now it's just Capcom as a word of its own - and Captain Commando would be made from that to be the company's mascot of sorts. He actually existed as a persona back in the 80s when the company was just producing games, but he wouldn't get his own game until the sidescroller. I think he's largely been dropped as a mascot since there are FAR more recognizable characters in their stable now.
I have the same 3rd party stealth arcade stick. It actually works really well! There is another capcom controller that i have called the Capcom Pad Soldier. Its a bit weird, but once you get used to it, its kind of like a mini pseudo arcade stick. Works great with street fighter games! :)
Metal Warriors is the best hidden gem on SNES. Great single player mech platformer, and amazing 2 player VS mode. Quite possible the best 2 player vs mode of the 16-bit era.
Another unique controller exclusive to Japan was the Hori SGB Commander. It could not only function as a regular SNES/SRC pad, but also could switch to a mode with functions exclusive to the Super Game Boy.
you've really gotta try Cybernator. Why does no one talk about this awesome game? Mecha-suite/robot 2D shooter. super fun, one of the games I grew up playing in the 90's. Cybernator!!! try it!
I like how seemingly neutral John is in his videos. He has collections for systems that compete vs each other, but he doesn't seem like he's too much a fan boy for either system when comparing them.
A few more rarer type ones for me based on playability and fun factor but not mentioned much were bomberman 3 - played to death, evo - loved the game style, jurassic park - played it over and over finished it like 4 times, equinox, alfred chicken
4:40.... the first snes game, where i got stuck and wasnt able to beat the game from my last save-point. Really need to replay & finish it some day soon.
I do have a couple of spare MSX titles (although nothing complete - as although I have found a bit complete lately most MSX items are loose cartridges). I have heaps of controllers and hardware as well. Plus of course my original titles which I am re-releasing shortly.
nice games in there.some of these i played.Hagane,Peace Keepers and Super Turrican 2 are all awesome.i loved every minute of playing these back in the day.i'll be looking into these new discoveries, thanks!
I've heard of some of these, but the only one I own so far is Firepower 2000. I like that game so much it got me started on video reviews on my own channel.
0:53 - Q*Bert 3
1:46 - The Peace Keepers
2:24 - Firepower 2000
3:07 - Kendo Rage
3:52 - Wolf Child
4:39 - Shadowrun
5:39 - Captain Commando
6:36 - BioMetal

I just realized...Captain Commando = CAPtain COMmando = CAPCOM
Bardia Mansoori Holy shit, I never noticed D;
That's funny, I just realized the same thing, after you explained it to me.
Congrats.
Holy shit, that's right.
Neat observation. probably how they easily named the character from taking it from their company capcom. Also, capcoms name comes from shortening their actual company’s full name: capsule computers.
amazing collection! Drugs ruined my life & i sold off virtually all my retro games.. Thank God im clean now & can slowly get some of my stuff back
+Thomas Gonzalez Glad to hear you are clean now, congrats!
Congrats man! Way to go
Thanks all!
God is good.
+Esteban Rodríguez There is no God. He did this on his own. GZ for that!

Same goes for a controller on emulation on a modern system.
Hold that controller in a 45 degree angle.

good list, but i was surprised to not see phalanx here... maybe i was the only fan?
Philip Wilcox I think he mentioned Phalanx in another list somewhere, but I'm not *completely* sure about that. It has to be mentioned for the box art alone, though.
for sure, i remember being a kid and thinking "wtf is up with this old guy?"
Philip Wilcox No shit! Seriously surreal.

please do more super nintendo hidden gems! theres like 700 games im sure you guys could squeeze out 10 more games or so
I remember Peace keepers as Rushing Beat Run and it was 4 players with the Multitap...used to love it 👍

Shadowrun is one of my top SNES titles. I played it when I was about 15 and recently revisited it at 32. It held up quite nicely and was a blast.
Game discussion starts at the following times:
0:53 - Q*Bert 3

3:07 - Kendo Rage

Shadowrun 5:03
Captain Commando 5:51

Lots of amazing gems I've never even heard of. Ebay, here I come...
The Mass Effect series is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. I can't decide who is hotter: Miranda, Liara or Jack
John surprised me by speaking like Q*Bert. I thought it was hilarious!
I love how John is always happy and smiling. If I had all those games, I probably would be smiling all the time too. Keep up the great vids!

That captain cammando is the same one from Marvel Vs Capcom fighting games I loved him
That Qbert joke at 1:34 made my day. haha Great video and keep up the good work!
The Undercover Cops is a great final fight type side scrolling brawler
Metal Jesus, It was great to meet you and DMP at the PRGE! And thanks for another excellent video!
One of the best hidden gems I ever played was an r-type style game called U.N. Squadron. Awesome game. Upgradeable plains and bombs made it one of my favorite games as a kid, you should check it out.
mitchell mudrow I wouldn't call UN Squadron a hidden gem.

Great hidden Gems - great video as always. Q*bert 3 and BioMetal looked awesome.

I would love to, but I am not the editor, nor have the time to pump out a consistent video time after time. I would much rather guest on MJR's and just have some silly fun :)
"Coming up on SNES Hidden Gems Part 4, we just go ahead and list every single game ever released for Super Nintendo."
Love your channel!
Be happy drunk not nasty drunk! I worship your channel too dude. In the immortal words of caroline flack:be kind.
You’re butthurt 😂

I think you need to bring John Hancock to the show more often. I feel like people are knocking him pretty bad about being awkward but I think he's a pretty funny and likable guy. Also he does look like Billy Mays and when your name is John Hancock you just ooze awesome.
Thanks for sharing your collection John and MJR for another great hidden gems video. Would love a 3 part Sega genesis hidden gems with John. =)
woho! Just spent a couple of months watching through all your episodes. Feels good to be in phase now, finally!! :D
Love the SNES Gems videos, 16 bit era was outstanding!!
I actually glad to see kendo's rage make the list, I haven't been able to own the game myself, but its definitely high on my priority list when I start collecting for the snes.
We had a great time at Portland Expo. So many awesome fans and games!
I just found this, but this whole community just always brings a smile to my face
Cap is one of my fav characters from Marvel vs Capcom series. Especially since his moves bring out all the characters on his team from the brawler.
I've watched the 3 videos and I must say this is probably the best hidden gem video Ive seen so far and Ive seen plenty. Really nice tips.

Yes the Captain Commando character is also in Marvel Vs Capcom 1 & 2, Namco Vs Capcom, Card Fighters Clash 2, and Card Fighters Clash DS.
The brawlers from the "trilogy" are "Rival Turf", "Brawl Brothers" and the last of them "The Peace Keepers", fun games with awesome soundtrack. I dont know if The peace keepers is related to the other two, but the others, yes they are.
Keep the snes gems coming!! This series is awesome!
Thanks once again MJR! Looking at building up my SNES collection, so this gave me a lot of great ideas! Keep up the great vids!
If I remember correctly the Peace Keepers brawler had a Battle Royal feature for up to 4 players. You could also go through the options and change the colors of the characters in the game. No joke, you could turn the hero green or the big dude with a mohawk pink. Fun stuff.
metal jesus you are great. Being a Commodore amiga man I dont know much about your subjects but you educate me about the nintendo retro world. Thanks
I had about 100 SNES games when I was a kid. Out of all three videos I only owned two of the gems he presented. Pac Attack and Firepower 2000. Firepower was great, very difficult. I barely got past the first stage.

Fridays are extra awesome with some MJR and John H!
Keep em coming! Hidden Gems 4!!!
Capt Commando also makes an appearance in Marvel Vs Capcom (1) for The Dreamcast as well. Great videos guys, obscure games kick arse keep makin em!
These are REALLY hidden gem. You sir are a real gamer :D

Captain Commando started as an arcade game. There was one at the corner store by the house I grew up in. Game was awesome.
good video! Loved the gibson les paul at the end. awsome guitar!!!
@MetalJesusRocks,
Another great video!
Ah MetalJesus and Jon Hancock you once again sending me on the hunt for more gems. I think I am going need a bigger shelf and wallet.
Thank you guys so far for the Hidden gems, found some I never even heard of and I just MUST GET THEM! :D
Love these hidden gem videos. Keep them coming.
Just picked up wolf child after seeing this video on the SNES. can't wait, awesome vids!
Lol eyes on the prize. I love these episodes with you and john. Keep up the awesome videos!!
(As well as check out what the others in the series were, as mentioned in the same video.)
To add my own to the list. I'd like to mention Batman Returns. It's not exactly unknown considering well, it's Batman. But it's a simple, but fun beat 'em up that barely ever gets mentioned. It's one of my most played games from back in the day, even if I could never beat the level with all the fire.
This video is almost 10 years old why am I watching this! Lol
because MJR is the best gaming channel on youtube! :D
Finally someone talks about Firepower 2000! I loved that game as a kid!
Nice 3 part hidden gems really enjoyed it,thanks goes out to both of you, much appreciated.
Another unique controller exclusive to Japan was the Hori SGB Commander. It could not only function as a regular SNES/SRC pad, but also could switch to a mode with functions exclusive to the Super Game Boy.
Ninja Warriors was one of the best beat 'em up's I ever played on the SNES. I think it's pretty obscure, as well.
you've really gotta try Cybernator. Why does no one talk about this awesome game? Mecha-suite/robot 2D shooter. super fun, one of the games I grew up playing in the 90's.
Cybernator!!! try it!
Awesome game. Check out the remake on ps4 and pc. Assault Suit Valken.
I like how seemingly neutral John is in his videos. He has collections for systems that compete vs each other, but he doesn't seem like he's too much a fan boy for either system when comparing them.
I know it's been a long time, but you really helped me build my collection. Thank you, man!
