    The 1st 3D game I ever saw. At my neighbors house on their 32x as a kid. I fondly remember how it blew my mind and opened my imagination as to what was possible.
    Nice seeing the arcade version side by side here.

    This is the first time I have seen the actual arcade game. The arcade clearly wins however I have more respect for the 32x version now. It was clearly a very decent home port of a then recent arcade game.

      You have a point about it all being in-context. I'd be interested to see what the N64 or PSX could have made of this. Probably both close to perfect, albeit not at 60fps.

    Considering it is a comparison between a piece of hardware that cost a couple of hundred at release against something that cost thousands when launched, the 32X version is a remarkably good port. Looks like it is running at half the frame rate but not bad at all.

    • @ericwood3709
      @ericwood3709 5 лет назад +6

      Yep, it was a good effort. It is unfortunate for the 32X that it had to compete against Sega's own Saturn and faced the problems of a high cost of entry and so few games to sell it. It was a bad combination that doomed it to fail. It was a good bit of hardware from a technical point of view and obviously improved on the Genesis/Mega Drive considerably.

      @@J.Crooner Fixed so that people will actually want to read it, since it's got some good points but is likely to get skimmed across due to it being written in ALL CAPS which comes across as childish or immature for most people.
      Agreed. The president of Sega should have simply scrapped the production of the Sega 32X & the Saturn altogether, putting all their focus on the Sega Dreamcast from the start which would have put SEGA back in the #1 driver's seat all the way into the new millennium, especially with Sonic Adventure being the definitive launch title & the release of the masterful remastered Soul Caliber game that I still faithfully play even today. Sega would still be around & on top if they had just tweaked their ideas & focal points just a little sooner than what they decided to do unfortunately😔. It would be nice to see Sega team up with SNK & give the world a true 1000 lightyear futuristic video game experience we so desperately need right now. The two companies could perform real magic together & put Sony & Microsoft officially "OUT OF BUSINESS" for good😎

    The arcade game is really impressive for it's time with how the Death Star approach seamlessly transitions to the trench and uses that to mask the obvious difference between the detailed surface versus what's seen in the approach, in the 32X it cuts away like many games would but the arcade version gives the impression of it being more like a physical place rather than a series of segments glued together with moments of blank screens.

    The 32x is missing fps and isn't as smooth as the arcade but it's still a good port, I don't remember games having such good graphics in 1993, to think there was a huge leap from this to Mario64 and Tomb Raider only 3 years later. It's like games became graphically better from 1993 to 1996 and then from 1996 to 2000 there was another huge improvement when PS2 and Xbox games came out and then from 2000 to 2006 it reached even a better detailed look with PS3 and XB360 but I feel after that games haven't really looked better since then. I mean PS4 games look slightly better than PS3 but it's not as noticeable as PS1 to PS2 to PS3

Think of the limitations they had. just like every other cartridge based games, it could hold up to 32Mb of data, thats 4009kb of Rom file size. They could do so much of programing until they reached the limit of memory usage. I know the 32x was not the best 32bit add-on, but the game was one of the best of all other 32x games I've played.

    Excellent choice for a launch game. With Virtua Racing Deluxe and Doom, SEGA had one of the best console launch lineup of games ever (best ever?). Too bad the games felt a bit rushed. In the case of Doom, it was very rushed. Star Wars Arcade on 32X could've benefited from extra opening animations (R2 is missing!), and more gameplay options, but it's nice as it is. The digitized Star Wars theme impressed me at the time and helped me "do the connection" (It was a cart after all!)

  • @facu1976
    @facu1976 4 года назад +1

    Visuals and sound are better on the arcade of course (the Model 1 was truly a beast for its time), but the playability of the home port seems to be a bit better even with the digital pad. That game was fun but also very hard, I only have beaten it once in 2 player mode (with the Y Wing). The little video feeds on the ship's hud reminded me of the original Star Tours. The 90s were a great time to be a young adult.

  • @Sinn0100

    This is...it's a $30,000 sit down arcade cab ($54,077.65 today) vs a cheap $179.00 add-on for the Sega Genesis ($325.19 today). The 32X version absolutely blew our minds in 1994 and was one of the best games to ever hit the add-on. This was a time when home consoles started to truly be a threat to the arcades. Once the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation hit the end was rapidly approaching for arcades. Games like Ridge Racer, Tekken, Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter, Soul Edge, just about any 2d fighter (with little concessions), Sega Rally, Virtua Cop, and so many more were pushing closer to the same experience at home. By the time the Sega Dreamcast hit that was the end of the line. Unfortunately, arcades never truly recovered and have been on a slow downward journey to full extinction.

    • @Lightblue2222
      @Lightblue2222 3 года назад

      Actually they used the 32x chip for the opening story roll, it plays the entire movie theme song straight from the movie. Something Genesis alone couldn't have come close too.
      And during gameplay its used for sound effects from the movie.
      I think only the in game music is fm, which does stand out. So I can see how the sound fx could be over looked.

    Arcade looks better, but that aside, the 32x was really hot for what it brought home to the TV. I like what I see here. I'm only sorry i was late to the game, regardless of the 32x's fate. I forgot what store came before Gamestop (not EB, not Babbage, there was another game store that was a rental/buy that was popular here in SoCal). It was 1996, I bought my 32x from it, also a few games (Kolibri, Virtua Fighter, Doom) they were a LOT of fun! I didn't know what games existed for 32x, but had I known star wars was on it, I'd have hunted it down for sure. I'd say the system did its job and kept me entertained on a budget, even with its limited library (the 32x was $20 and the games $10 each). It wouldn't be till 1998 till I got a PS1, so it was most certainly worth it.

    • @Markis5150

      That store would be Software Etc. Which later turned into GameStop. I had one reserved the day it released,grabbed Star Wars,Virtua Racing Deluxe, and a few months later Knuckles Chaotic. For its time the hardware was great,but you knew that it was on shaky ground with the Saturn coming. I had no regrets buying one,was an incredible rush playing Sega arcade ports in those days. Err wait,rental store? Are you thinking of BRE Software? WE had 3 of them here in Fresno/Clovis in those days. They were really nice. You could ren or buy the games and they often got games in faster than anyone.

    BUT! Lol if sega would have found a way to make its 32X cartridges have a lot more space in a way and more power there’s no DOUBT that this would have been model 1 arcade perfect on the 32X

      It saw an extremely limited test run in the US and Europe, with only, like, 12 units making it over. Not long after, Sega lost their contract with Lucasfilm, and the PCB’s were destroyed. So yeah, this game is INSANELY rare.

    32x is really good considering it was competing against a super computer.

    Had no idea the original game was running off a Model 1 board.
    Wow - -that meant AT LEAST a 50% drop in rendered poly's in the conversion to 32X!
    I never finished this game... It was just WAY TOO HARD and the control was bad.
    I imagine the reason it was never ported to Saturn might have been timing and licensing.
    For that matter, they NEVER ported Star Wars Trilogy to any console, either.

    The 2-Player-System with one as Pilot and one as Gunner is very cool - but only the Arcade-Version has this Feature, right?

    arcade wins. the 32X is slower and has a more grainy feel to it. decent port though

      throw on the free play to make sure the roms function in their entirety, mortal kombat II arcade upright I owned had one faulty rom for the 2nd player so I got it for free and fixed the rom it was just corrosion on contact. Can't say the same for jamma boards vs pcb eeprom. Perhaps if there's a difference in game quality or play that could be a vc decide...

      O causador disso foi o PlayStation, a sega acreditava que o 3d era só para os seus arcades.

    Eu não posso nem criticar a versão do 32X, porque é evidente que essa versão seria inferior ao do Arcade. Agora eu queria saber, se o game fosse portado para o Mega Drive com o chip SVP, as pessoas não teriam tanto preconceito com esse jogo?

      The 32x was like the Super FX for the Genesis, quite primitive compared to what was already being developed for the fifth generation, but a necessary stopgap until release of those consoles.
