I went to west Virginia for a robotics competition (it was a major culture shock, I live in Alaska, and HOLY COW your summers are scorching) and they told us to learn that song before we came. One of the Brazilian teams sang that song at least once on each of the five days of the competition.

SF is one of the most linguistically diverse cities in the country. I can walk to the corner store down the block and depending on which of my neighbors I pass I’m likely to hear English, Spanish, Amharic, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, and who knows what else. But for some reason people here love to let you know that they don’t understand you if you have a strong accent. I don’t get it.

It's also very case by case. Switching languages can be condescending and hard to follow, but I find many people who aren't native English speakers really like it. If you're making a conscious effort to learn and use some Spanish to better connect with someone they will usually be flattered.

As someone that works in food service in Texas, “hi how are y’all doin” is what I say all day. I don’t normally expect a response it’s just a longer version of “hello.” When traveling to other countries I learned that if you ask that it’s like more personal, like you’re really asking how they feel.
