Hi Rob. My uncle died today and been feeling really down. I somehow found video and it made me feel a bit better and smile. Without even realising I've done some of the things you mentioned in the video including making a self video talking to my self quite a while back, having fresh pairs of socks in my draw and getting guitar plectrums after having enough. As I started to write this my eyes are were watery but no more. Things aren't great right now but hope for better days. Thanks for the motivation.
As someone who struggles with depression in AND outside of music (social/lack of love, health, school, etc.), this video helps me greatly!! Whenever I'm down, I watch this video. I can't thank you enough, Chappers.
Same here man. Music and playing music has always been an outlet for me and a ton of people
+Paul Rose Same here!
...Rob, I have not words for you and your decision. You motivate me since long time ago. I consider you a great example of positive person. With positive feelings and hard work you have reached your goals. Please continue motivating all those who surround you. Don't stop to do funny videos. Don't stop to compose amazing songs. Don't stop to eat bacon, pizza and bananas... And please don't stop to transmit your positivity to everyone. (continue)
i've watched this video about 5 times but i've never watched it for more than 5 minutes because i just want to play my guitar
+Quit Ewe That's the spirit!
I still go to this video. Even when Im depressed with other stuff in life.
great video!!! all is true!
I think this is a very down to earth video and it really feels like a human being talking to another with genuine interest, I am really glad I found this. I've been streaming through a lot of videos of the Captain and Chappers and this is seriously a man who doesn't believe himself on a pedestal, I really like that about him.
If there is anything I can for motivation is a quote by my favorite guitarist, Mr. Richie Sambora. It goes like this: When you feel like quitting, remember why you started.
As a 42 year old musician who's been playing since the late '80s, with loads of ups and downs I really needed to watch that today. Brilliant video. Keep doing stuff like this, it keeps the likes of me going :)
This video completely changed the way I look at things... I'm always running scales, trying to get better and better, and I've come to realize that it's not all about that. Thanks, Chappers... You may very well have changed my life with this single video.
Rob Chapman is my spirit animal. I too understand the power of coffee and fresh socks. What you said about constantly needing to create is spot on...
I love you brother! I for one am adding this to the favorites pile. You bring people joy. Good man.
Awesome to see a musician that addresses what holds basically everyone back, themselves. The world needs more musicians like you, people who love the music and love others that are pursuing their passion as well, and can be a normal goofy human being in the mean time. This video was a great and a big help as I've been at a bit of a mental plateau, and this was just what I needed to hear. Keep doing what you're doing man, cheers
I'm not alone in being glad this man exists.
Found this video by accident but needed to watch it. You just made my day, I have had a crappy brain or a while but you just reminded me of a time I went away with my parents after a period of illness. I went and played original instrumental songs in a pub at an open mic acoustic night thing amongst about 6 middle aged musicians and I was about 21. I got the prize of a token for drinks and had a really mind opening time with some strangers miles away from home. My first genuine earnings. Cheers.
Chappers your consideration for your fellow musicians, fans, or both is very refreshing and inspiring by itself. I thank you and anyone else who is very down to earth and helpful when many are in need! Be you Chappers!
As of this moment, whenever I feel unmotivated or down I will watch the telecommunicatory telepathic message on repeat until I feel I've absorbed as much motivational energy as humanly possible. Then I will pick up my guitar (and my life) and play!
Music is a God given blessing that touches the soul .This is probably the reason why scientists these days struggle to understand or explain why music has the ability to move us so genuinely and so wonderfully powerfully !
Chappers, you are one of the funniest guys ive seen. It seems that you are a genuine person that hasnt forgotten where he came from.Your passion for music is inspirational.
This could not have been a better time for me to watch this! I started a great band back in '07, we disbanded at the end of '10 and literally yesterday we got a new practice space and started making new plans. I'm really stoked man, thanks for the motivation.
That makes complete sense about musicians being healers. I always want to make people happy. When I play in my goofy bar band, the ONE thing I emphasize is that we play things the crowd enjoys and can have a really good, fun, enjoyable, memorable time.
"Musicians are healers"
It's been 8 years now, but I still feel the impact of that one line, as if I were a sentimental little child
this is a great motivational video hands down....but what inspires me more is reading the comments at the end of any Chapper's video and actually seeing proof of how many musicians out there are feeling and thinking the same as myself. I wanting to improve my playing and currently follow a great teacher by the name of Steve Stein...but wen my get up and go has got up and went I always turn to Rob.....thx to u Chapper's for being u. no ego, open to all and showing us all what a "guitar hero" really is
...Nowadays I am crossing a hard moment in my personal life. But everyday, when I wake up, I try to see that positive way. The best way to see people, who love you, happy, is transmit your own positive feelings. (continue)
I can't believe it's been so many years since you've put this video online. Seems like I need it more than ever. Thank you, Chappers, for being such an amazing and inspirational human being. Wish you all the best (an infinity of fresh, brand new socks and good smelling Orange cables), cheers!
This video really helped and cheered me up. Great advice, some wise words. Definitely feeling motivated to pick up my guitar again. Thanks Chappers!!
I created my folder. It contains a file called "Motivation.txt" and when I open it there is the link to this video. I don't need any kind of diary or stuff like that, Chappers' words are so inspiring themselves that I feel instantly better! He is really a healer!
Great video, Rob, as always!
Cheers!
I really appreciate what you're saying about why we play music that it's healing. It's odd that I watch this today because my English teacher is having us do activities on a book called The Gift and the book talks about the exact same thing when it comes to us as musicians, and attending things such as concerts. That we give ourselves when we perform and we receive so much when we watch these wonderful performances.
I was having a really bad day until I watched this. I really liked and thought seriously about the "healer" element of what we do. Made my day, and made me do some serious thinking. Thank you. (Oh yeah, and I've been playing professionally for about 40 plus years plus.) When you're a musician you never stop learning.
I know this is an old video and I've been a fan for years now but I JUST stumbled upon this video today and it really brightened my day. Thanks for the years of great content Chappers!
sometimes i think that i can come up with really good stuff, but it lacks me experience and knowledge to make it real... you made me feel better, thanks chappers!
Possibly the most helpful video I have ever seen on RUclips. And yes, I got the mind message at the end, even though the video already motivated me. Thanks Chappers.
First of all congratulation to all the participants on the competition. There were really really good designs. And thanks to the contest I found lovely people at the Chapman Guitars Forum. Thank you very much to all for your comments and critics.
Rod is talking about motivation as a musician, and motivation in your personal life.
Some times we could find difficult situations in life but we must try to see the positive side. Most of those bad situations has a positive side...

Speaking of the Skyrim map in the background
For me it’s weird
It’s like when I’m interested in gaming I’m depressed and unmotivated
But when I’m interested in music I’m happy and motivated
Like this guy. . . He's a warm person, it's always going outside of ur self to inspire other's
Never thought of it that way, but I think youre onto something Mr Chappers. Music is the great unexplained x factor that has in fact changed the face of the world. Great vid. Thanks for posting.
if theres a heaven you have booked a place by doing this video. im pretty sure it helped alot of humans as it did to me. thanks a milli
Have just discovered your motivational pick-up drams of goodness and karma this morning. Have just begun to learn guitar (at 59) and man oh man I needed some perspective. Thanks Rob Chief Dude and Guru of my musical soul. Gonna start my motivational folder today.
This was the most inspring, motivating videos I've ever seen. Thanks for that.
I dont care how cheesy this sounds but Rob you are one of the biggest reasons i play guitar you are a real inspiration and im sure everyone will agree. I was so sad when i heard you cancelled your gig in liverpool i was desperate to watch your show and Phil X. Please keep up the good work you inspire me and many more to play guitar thankyou.
something else that has motivated me for three plus years now? your videos!
So loving this....been in a sort of a depressed rut when in comes to my guitar playing..and this helped immensely. If I'm not healing others, I can play to heal myself. I'll just keep playing and playing because that's what I love to do!
listen Rob I have been in a shitty mind set for years until I found your video about a year ago and ever since it has helped me realize that in that time I am not to good at guitar but i am amazing at trumpet n I have taken some of the concepts I learned for playing trumpet and intertwined them with my guitar and it's pretty fun, it is also very true when u know how to play an instrument your are focused on progression not the past. so thanks for making this video it has helped me through those times where i was gunna say screw it and sell all my gear. once again thank you
You and your videos remind me why I keep playing guitar. Your videos are very informational in my opinion.
The videos help my to improve on playing the guitar but, there is one problems I can not read sheet music, I only know 3 different chords, I can hardly tune a guitar and I learn bits of songs by ear. When I try to learn how to play a song I move to quick and I don't get all of the content of the song that I am learning.
your videos inspire my to keep moving on in music. You are one of my many hero's among Jimi Hendrix, Slash, and Frank Zappa.
I have wanted to learn to play the guitar for the last 14 years ago... 14 years ago as it happens, I first brought a bass guitar and I started playing around with it but never got very far. Then a year ago I found this video and well... I had never heard of Rob Chapman but well, life teachings are life teachings, and feeling very much like how Pink Floyd put it in Time of the "Dark side of the Moon" album;
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
While being 29 at the time I decided I would go ahead and catch the verse some where between the second and fourth line :P. I am now in Uni studying Games development and in January 2014 in particular, I picked up a guitar for the first time in 13 years (lead guitar now, not Bass), got my self a copy of Rocksmith 2014 having been completely impressed by the totally legitimate commercial claims of zero to hero in 60 days.
Well.. A year later.... Mastery mode on a fair few tracks.... I go to a friends to jam with him a bit.. ...
I sucked so bad it was depressing. RS taught me how to play songs, not a guitar.
So here I am, back at this video, watching it again and getting ready to start guitar lessons in the new year. Still being inspired by Rob Chapman. Never giving up.
So. I am going to be positive.
I suck at playing the guitar because I have not learnt to play the guitar yet. The skill are coming soon... However... I am totally awesome at Rocksmith.
Anyway, thanks Rob.
Falney You should try Metal Method!
^^^ Rocksmith is an amazing tool. :p
+rUcerial 9 I have to admit that having had an actual instructor, I have learnt a lot more in half the time and looking back at rock smith, I really shudder. Not only that but I can't bring my self to loading up RS.
A lot of people don't understand that some people just learn in different ways. Me and my best friend love Rocksmith 2014 (the first one as a game was horrible) and eventually set up a band because of it. Some people prefer a personal connection so they can ask away and learn techniques in a certain way. I for one just want to play regardless. Under a year I'd consider myself to be above average on the bass guitar (not much competition albeit.) But that's just my personal opinion, I'm sure people like Chappers wouldn't like it, but oh well. ....I talk a lot.
Totally agree with your point about people missing the point sometimes. They get so up their own arses about trying to be as clever as possible that they forget to make memorable and passionate music.
Thank you so much for making this video. I haven't picked up my guitar in months but after watching this I remember why I got into playing. But this video also motivates me all aspects of life. Thank you Rob :)

I like your worldview. Hope I meet someone like you in my life
This is the Chappers-madness I love. The tick-box philosophy when you can play your instrument is a mind-opener for me. I try to be more metal-ish all the time but I can't sustain, sadly!
Thanks for this video Rob! Keep doing your stuff!
I was born with some extreme depression,so I've never really believed in myself. You just made me believe in myself. I love you Chappers :')
That is exactly what I needed Chappers! I have been in a rough spot. It means a lot! Thanks.
It's amazing how far chappers has expanded I remember back when he was killing snowmen and eating Cole slaw that may have contained death to were he is today it's truly inspiring and the fact that he makes videos like this which make me feel happy that there are good people in this world we can all take a page from chappers book we can do anything we set our minds to thanks a bunch chappers for the years of enjoyment.
Every time I lose inspiration to pick up my guitar, this video always seem to do the trick. Thanks Chap'!
I love what you said about "If I can get the perfect technique, I'll have made it." I can relate! Perhaps inevitable mindset, since I'm in jazz. Oh well...
Chappers.. this video literally sums up eveything I love about you and you channel into 15minutes and 8seconds... THANKYOU FOR BEING THE BEST MOTIVATOR EVER..... PS buying gravity picks actually did help and I got your signature one :)
hey, man,I love it when you suddenly do something weird and inexpected or play a short rift. You ought to be a stand up comic.
I'd have thought it would have been an old 5 pound note, but the fact is was a new one makes me happy since it proves that learning guitar don't take all that long.
I've been watching videos of dorje and that has been my motivation for the past few days. Thank you so much rob
...My head hurts because of happiness :D
Thank you very much Rob. Thank you a million times!
A big big hug,
César.
I really was feeling under motivated today, but you helped me Rob...12-14-15...
I've been able to teach my son to play. He wants me to teach him the solo to Hotel Cal. Sort of a boring pursuit for someone like me. I'm one that you described who wants so badly to improve my speed and technique to top shredding level. I love to work on the mode scales and explore those musical landscapes too but today I wasn't feeling it until I watched your motivation video ... again. Thanks!
Chappers I hope to shake your hand one day.
This is why Chappers is awesome. He really does try to help out other fellow musicians.
Sipping on my coffee, just taking a quick peek at the background. *Moment of realization* That thing... there! That's the Skyrim map! (I had mine framed)
Great video. Sitting here practicing E. Johnson pentatonic rundowns, drinking coffee and feeling motivated!
Thanks chappers. I'm a beginner guitarist and I dream of being up on stage playing killer guitar solos and stuff like that but sometimes I feel like that wont happen. You really motivated me.
I always motivate with just listening to music or watching music video´s on youtube.
They always keep me motivated to keep going!
Thanks very much for choosing my guitar for the top 5! And it was very well deserved, that the Banana guitar won! It just looked awesome.
And thanks for the motivational speech :D I think motivation is something every musician struggles with at times.
chappers, Thankyou so much for making this video, 2 friends and I have a band and I have been thinking lately "great. we have a band. what now?" and this has really helped. We are all in year 11 at school and we have organised a battle of the bands event at school and there will be a couple of other bands playing, and we are confident that we will at least be the most musical and loudest (in a good way, not a painful way) even if we are not technically brilliant. Ur videos motivate is all. TY
A couple things I'd like to add, I always get motivated by looking back at old songs I've written and listening to them, as well as listening to music my mates have written, even if it's not what I'm into, I always find listening to what other people, especially who I know in person, have written is interesting and makes me think about what I can do.
Inspirational, as well as thoroughly entertaining, well done!! :)
Haha, how convenient having the worst writing session in months and then seeing this when logging on to youtube. Really needed it. Thank you. ;)
ya man I love this thanks. Been playing for along time off and on. Been playing in band after band but its been sooo long since I have played for myself. Just picked up playing guitar for myself for the 1st time in 4-5 years the spark truly feels good Thanks man and cheers \m/
Thank you! That is just what the world of guitarists need
The socks tip works. It's absolute magic! Three cheers for new socks. Hip hip...
Hey man, just wanted to say that you're awesome to listen to. I just found you today - but instantly felt your sincerity. I only picked up my first guitar about a year ago... second hand. I wish I had someone like you to chat with and learn from. That custom guitar looks incredible!!
Very inspiring stuff mate!
great video, Chappers! has helped me a lot. been having some really rough times here lately, and.. at one point was considering giving my guitars to a friend. glad i didnt, im downloading this video as we speak to my hard drive, so i can watch it every morning before work. you have saved my life/career/soul. and for that, i thank you. Rock on, my friend. ROCK ON!!!
I am seriously convinced that any person would be a better human being after watching this video.
Great video, spot on with the recording yourself thing. I've been playing for 2 years, but I've been recording myself ever since I started. When I feel like I'm not going anywhere, I listen to some old recordings and cringe at how bad they are, and how thankful I should be for the progress I've made.
Thanks Chappers!
Thats probably the realist shit i have heard from a musician. Thank You Chappers
You are the man Chappers, thanks for your words of musicianship wisdom, cheers from Virginia! \m/
I actually find myself watching this at least once every few months, or when the day has just gone completely awry....The video does what it says! I always laugh uncontrollably during the "Action packed & full of Chappers energy" part of the intro..Impossible for me to keep a straight face and not smile. It's Absolutely Brilliant! Plus the quick comedic video edits are just fun...def get an Alexi Sale, Python or Benny Hill vibe from the camera editing...That's right! Even a "yank" knows of classic British comedic television!: )
"And now for something completely different...." Thanx for the smiles Chappers!
You kick fists!!.....Snarf!
THE SKYRIM!!! THE MAP!! THE PRE ORDER DELUXE MAP. Lol I loved the video. Getting ready to record a 3 song ep, needed this good stuff.
Thank you Rob for this vid! I instantly went to find my old Puma sneakers that I bought with the first 30€ I have earned by playing guitar.. And they actually served me pretty well for next two years and now I'm gonna put them hanging from my roof to remind me of that I've really achieved something with music... Althouh it wasn't a lot that time its importance was enormous for a beginner ''musician'' :D
Chappers you have been such a big influence in my music an life and your the biggest legend, thank you:)
Men, since i start watching your vids my motivation for music was like: BOOM!!!! YOu just know what you do, awesome music, awesome reviews and chat. Thanks for making the vids and for sharing that awesome energy for music :D Now i'm more motivated for working and buying an electric :D
That guitar at 11:32... It has to be one of the most beautiful guitars I have ever seen. It's like a work of art!
Mr. Chappers this is another great video, and i really enjoy following your suggestions on certain things, but you give me inspiration to play music as much as many other guitarists, singers or musicians in general. I look up to you now, and im sure a lot of other people do too, because you have got this far with this career, and i want to do the same thing you do and be in the same position you are. Im only 16 and im just at the beginning of climbing this huge mountain. -Max
you know i think the real thing to keep in mind is that we play music to help people.someone going to one of your gigs may have just had the most awful day at work or just had a bad day in general and then you get on stage with your band and just music his/her socks off. and now, because of your cosmic sonic sounds from the heavens he/she feels much better because his/her socks have been music'd off by your awesome tones from the cosmos and he/she feels better the next day when they get up and live their life
im 16 year old guitarist and this is truly inspirational, i could relate to everything! Thank God for the Monkey Lord! Cheers Chappers!
Thanks for joining my Saturday morning wake up time and making me smile. I'm still at the bottom base level learning state BUT it is music therapy if only for me! lol and that's pretty good and free :)
Wow! This video has definitely motivated me to not worry much about techniques. Rather focus more on song-writing and recording my existing tracks. thnx Rob!
Thanks dude, that really means a lot to me! We'll be in Liverpool with the next tour which will be announced in a few weeks - See you then ;-)
Sorry Chappers but for the past 15 minutes and 8 seconds I've been fixated by that skyrim map in the background
right
By the way, thanks Rob for making me the next endorsee for Chapman Guitars! Can,t wait!
I KNEW I've heard that voice before - thx to you! now I know what I should have been reminded of...
something that used to help me, is to think about stuff that is troubling you. when you pick one situation, just write it down. that would be verse one. a plan to overcome it, verse two. how you feel/hope to feel, verse three. then, for the chorus, just go wild and write down a catchy poem bout the situation itself, but dont end up copying the first verse, and bam. instant number one hit, if youre lucky. good luck!
Ron i have been following you for a long time now and this is just the viedeo ive been waiting for im stuck in this rut and have been struggling for a long time with it (especially with going to BIMM soon) and i just wanted to say thank you this video has inspired me to pick the guitar back up and just do what i want to do you truly are an inspirational man thank you rob
Simon
I needed this chappers, I'm going into the studio to record with my band tomorrow and began to have all these doubts about errrr I was actually good enough to be in this situation, only to look back to two years ago, and realise that I was l, cheers chappers :)
Chappers, thank you so much for this video. I'm 16 and been playing for about 3 or 4 years and in 2 struggling bands and I am giving it my all and nothing is happening. However, every time I just don't know what to do or how to play something I will now picture you crisp imperial credits of the realm and think- What would Chappers do? thank you so much Rob your a top guy and an inspiration to me and many more people. rock on dude
I just watched a video by the DMan. He recommended that all bassists watch this. All motivation is great. I really enjoyed your video. It gave me a laugh and some stuff to think about. I keep a database diary (because my memory is so bad), and although I keep other players videos in there, I have never thought of including my own routine. Thanks .Great idea. Haters begone!
What you'll "need" in the long run are the chords that you enjoy. If you're ever going to write music, you're going to want to write things that you like and things that you have fun with. I would suggest learning standard major chords and learning things that have varying sounds, but other than that, learn what you can. It's such a great feeling to know many chords because it opens up so many doors in your playing when it comes to improv. It's a great feeling to have many options.
