And Cornell had been running around with his Nirvana shirt from the beginning. There are straight up vintage shots of him in that shirt probably within weeks after Bleach came out.
You aren't kidding. All those guys supported the hell out of each other's bands to a degree that we hadn't seen before, or since. They loved what they were doing and they loved each other.
@@LapsedPacifist79yeah it's way up there on my list of perfect albums. I think the only track on there that isn't single material is "Half" and it's still a great track that captures the spirit of the album with it's Eastern themes.
Feels kind of weird that this was brand new on music T.V. then. I have a snippet of a memory looking at the bottom of a gals baggy pants and converse chuck taylor shoes back then. Kids fashion has come in a circle with those stupid pants.
I was 16 when Black Hole Sun was released. What a great time to be a teenager. I still listen to all of my CD's from back then. My wife pokes fun at me because I won't switch over to streaming but I love listening to the entire album, start to finish. It's kinda my thing. 😊
Takes you back to that age bro, that's why you still do it this way. I was also 16 when it came out, however my music is mostly digital lately even though I have all of my CDs
I was in. Games Workshop store buying warhammer 40k models. And I was floored by the song being played. It took me out of where I was and when it ended I just needed to hear it again!
I agree. Compared to every other grunge band, even the greats, there was a level of melodic sophistication that could not be matched in Soundgarden compositions.
Only reason that song bugs me is the fact that it’s the only song most people I know personally even listen to by them and I’m like dude! There’s so much more!!
Man, the nineties were da s**t! I was in high school and into punk rock, but even as a young teen, I knew this grunge sound and these bands were something special. When I heard Soundgarden, I was quick to get my guitar and jam along to their songs, trying to learn them, just like with Nirvana. Then I heard STP, and again really got into them, as well. So much good music was going on, on the mainstream and underground.😊
are you me? First record I bought with my own money was Ten, the birthday gift before that was Nevermind. Humming the whole Core album all day. When I heard Superunknown and especially Black Hole Sun for the first time, I had a similar reaction as Dave. Thid is different, this is huge, this is something else.
and (obviously) Pearl Jam. Chris was Andrew Wood's roomie. If you don't know who that is: singer of Mother Love Bone whose surviving members would become Pearl Jam
I had never heard this Beatles- Black Sabbath reference... and I have been describing this to people that arent familiar with SG and really grunge overall... this is a perfect composition of melody combined with something punk driven and the dark sound depth of a Black Sabbath, if they had shown up in the 90s.
I seen soundgarden in 92 supporting guns n roses at gateshead stadium they came on n fuck me what a voice chris cornell had and as a band just super tight perfection 👌 n yup they was better than guns n roses
Black hole sun was/is 1 of the most songs from the first time I heard it.For me it was about an island in the sun with an asfaltlake (some kind of a black hole sun).Felt like I was not the only person struggling with that problem.A very important album in my life
I have all cds of Nirvana, non official live recordings too, i just have Superunknown of Soundgarden, and yet i truly think Chris Cornell was/is one of the best music artist ever! Soo good at singing, so good at playin instruments, soo good at composing songs, i love his music! And i love Nirvana but i love Cornelll with Soundgarden & Audioslave even more!
Apples and oranges. Soundgarden is grunge ,heavy metal alternative metal alternative rock. Radiohead is art rock alternative rock electronica experimental, rock art pop. Ok Computer is considered one of the best albums released. I was 17 back in 97' and I was shocked when in 2000 they released Kid A. A complete left turn from everyone was expecting. Masters.
Oh wow Dave! That's a perfect description of Soundgarden! My best friend and I would travel to the mall from small town Texas - I was getting Soundgarden tapes and she was getting New Kids On The Block. 🤦 Lol! Musical differences 😆
I remember reading that bio that he's misremembering, it was "the Bay City Rollers getting molested by Black Sabbath", but also I understand that they quickly started to distance themselves from using sexual assault terminology flippantly.
It’s been stated in magazines that Nirvana sound like The Bay City Rollers and The Knack being tortured by Black Flag (Rollins) & Black Sabbath. And yes, Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden (Chris Cornell) was, and still is, a beautiful melodic song with creepy overtones. I meant to use the word creepy in a good way.
I never liked it. I didn't. Fell on black days is like the one song i know i like by Soundgarden. Nothing against them, i do give them credit for everything tgey accomplished. My Sister loved them as so many others did. They just weren't my cup of coffee! AIC & Nirvana were great. Wasn't initially a Pearl Jam fan but they absolutely grew on me. And those are the most popular grudge bands. Oh & i don't care what anyone says, Hole fuckin rocked! Whether she is a POS or not, idk, i Wasn't there around them so i don't know. She probably was tho but Hole was great
Dave, if you ever read this… I do want to make a comment… If I were to make rock references versus rap references which I am personally influenced more by rock ‘n’ roll than I am rap… I would consider myself to play the guitar and sing rather than rap, I guess is where I’m going, but if I spit out, say one rap in a search bar, the biased and music takes over within seconds and say RUclips and it’s mind-boggling how quickly it takes over.
Unpopular opinion, I cannot stand Black Hole Sun, it's so dronish and repetitive, I feel the same way about Smells Like Teen Spirit from Nirvana, those are my least favorite songs from each of those bands, they both are so much better than those two songs. imho
So it had been a year after Chris committed suicide in Detroit at The MGM Casino. I'm taking an Uber to work one day and my driver also worked in Housekeeping at the MGM. And we got to talking about Chris dying there and she said they ripped the room bare. Pulling up the carpet, tile, and stripping away the wallpaper and repainting. Threw out all of the furniture and bed. Then the sealed it up. They had so many requests from crazy people and fans wanting to book the room. The management decided not to book the room and let it sit empty for years until it died down.
I went out and bought the tape of Superunknown I think the day it came out. And the only song that I knew at the time was spoon man so I would fast forward to that song every time not really taking in the whole album (stupid me) . But for whatever reason I turned the tape over and it was Black Hole Sun. The first time you hear it it throws you. I was like, “this is like Zeppelin to the 10th power with a punk feel. They’re going to ruin this moment by making it a hit.” Sure enough…
Dave has lost so many close friends it’s sad. Kurt and Taylor especially. He was also friends with Chris as you can see. All tragic endings. I’m sure he been to some sort of therapy to deal with this. Plus being so recognized as the great talent that he is. He is known as one of the most down to earth guys in music. Nirvana has had such an impact on my life through music and my some of perceptions in life. I’m in my mid 40s. Still listen to them till this day.
If it hadn't been for Nirvana's smells like teen spirit, Soundgarden would have been recognized as the greatest grunge band. But that one song changed the game.
i bet that song meant a huge deal to krist cus of it being released the same year kurt vanished from the pre-web scorched earth; waterless earth only fire deep within our cynical depression, but sometimes nihilistic angst. truth or falsehoods? rip blackholenirvana.
I got into a car accident with my mom, brother and sister with this song playing on the radio when it first hit the radio waves. I’ll never forget and I love this song 🖤
Nirvana was the only grunge band. SoundGarden, pearl jam(who just sucked anyway) stone temple pilots, Alice in chains.. etc were not grunge, they were just 'alternative rock n roll'. But! The Melvins deserve an honorable mention. As do smashing pumpkins, while not technically grunge they were doing their own thing from like 1988 until 1996 I think is when they put out the Mellon Collie record.🤓🙃
Grunge is just a descriptor of that era and place, it has no musical significance at all, you just associate it with nirvana which is fine, but it’s not a knock on any other band that they don’t fit whatever you’ve decided grunge means
A meeting of the Beatles and Black Sabbath is an amazing description of Black Hole Sun 😩
Perfect 👍
The whole album too! 4th of July is just HEAVY
The solo sounds like something out of war pigs

Sigh why Chris and Kurt gotta go the same way
And Kurt having a soundgarden sticker on his guitar
And on the same album there is:
- fell on black days
- spoonman
- the day I tried to live
All bangers !! 😍
There’s not a bad song on that album. There’s not even a weaker one. It’s near perfect
Fresh tendrils, Limo wreck, Superunknow e a minha preferida Like Suicide. É com certeza um álbum perfeito.

There is not one bad song, all songs are awesome!
My personal favorite song is "Head down". 10/10
90s Grunge/Alternative was an era. 💙 Absolute legends.

Summer 1994 30 years ago wow time flies 😮
