    The 20,000 sexes in that fungus is absolute nonsense. Those are mating-types. This is like a guy saying that he’s usually attracted to women, but since he doesn’t feel attracted to his sister, she’s not a female, but a different new sex. Many fungus species have multiple mating types, and if they have the same mating type that means they are probably closely related or part of the same organism, and in that case nuclei will not be transferred. This is mostly so that they don’t constantly „mate“ with themselves.

    • @sintanan469
      @sintanan469 Месяц назад +43

      I use something like that for my plant people in my fantasy setting. The plant folk don't have a gender like other species do, instead their "gender" is the coloration of their, well, petal analogies. This ensures when two fully grown nymphs decide to move on the next stage of their life their offspring will have as much diversity as possible. The personalities of the nymphs must also be compatible as they will merge into one being as they form a new mother tree.
      For nymphs that reach the age for offspring without finding a suitable mate, they instead find a grove of a mother tree and root themselves as a servant to the mother tree, serving as a grove tender and protector of the offspring. Some nymphs that become grove tenders to a young mother tree that are compatible with both beings forming the tree may find themselves able to pass on their genetics, but this is rare and a long shot option. Most nymphs becoming tenders do so accepting their genetic line ends with them to help the species have the best chance to survive.

      The term applies to intersex. A doctor sometimes does look at ambiguous genitals and choose between the sexes. It’s honestly sad that people have this thing where “if a person doesn’t say they’re a man or a woman I can’t assume they are”
      I found out at the end of my last school year that many of my classmates assumed I was nonbinary…simply because of the simple fact that I occasionally wore suits. I prefer to wear the male style of suits with the dress pants and a tie, I don’t like pencil skirts. But I also wore dresses and have long hair, so everyone thought that since I’m feminine and also masculine that I cannot just be a girl, I have to be nonbinary…
      I grew up with an older brother and no sisters, so I have some masculine tendencies. I’m used to people asking me about it and stuff but the fact that just based on CLOTHES they’re assuming that I’m not a girl is crazy asf. I’m sorry, but you can 1000% tell when someone is a male or female. Even if they’re trans (unless they have blaire white levels of passing).

      Socialism has nothing to do with any of this. Look: here is what happened - in the 1970s the "left" saw itself as a champion of the underdog which meant the workers, the poorly paid, people who struggle with debt et cetera; now the Ayn Randian retort of Thatcherites was that Socialism celebrated failure and mediocrity whilst villainising success and that what we really wanted was everyone equally poor. To that end they worked to disempower unions, privatise public services and lower taxes for the rich. Consequently the establishment loved the tories because the establishment is largely controlled by billionairres who are enormously successful. Now on order to self-identify as champions of the underdog whilst at the same time appeal to the establishment that threw its weight behind Thatcher they would have to redefine "underdog" not in terms of wealth or class but in terms of identity groups, i.e. abandon socialism in favour of identitarianism. All this identity politics is not socialism but a ruse to compensate for the abandonment of socialism.
      Now when it began to get really vile was in the wake of the occupy wall street protests in the US and the MP expenses scandals in the UK and the bailouts of the banks, at which time the people's dissatisfaction with the institutions reached a crisis point and so identitarianism became hyperweaponised as a tool for division of the general public against each other. Do you really believe all the corporations flying the rainbow flag are socialist?!? Do you think Black Rock and Vanguard are socialist? Or Walt Disney or Starbucks or Raytheon? Is it even credible to you that these people are ardent Marxists or levellers?

Sex was defined in terms of the manufacturing equipment itself - a species-specific criterion - for the production of gametes, which is a general criterion regardless of species. It's also defined in terms of lifecycle. "You have X for the purpose of Y at some point in your lifecycle." And about plants - a lot of plants are both male and female at same time. Still not makes it third sex and still not related to humans.
    In mushrooms there technically only two sexes, but thousands of mating types. It is like "male but one that work not for all females, but for specific ones". Which still not makes it something else.

A binary still exists there are just species that facilitate that binary differently. The gender of the plant is determined in the big picture sense, meaning that the production of both male and female flowers doesn't actually mean it is "switching" gender. It is common for plants to be able to produce both male and female flowers, sometimes simultaniously. Some can even form both male and female parts on the same flower, which is what a "true hermaphodite" is in the plant word. It's so common to "switch" that even pumpkins, melons and cucumbers do this as a normal function for fertilisation.

    Gender roles are actually very commonly observed in nature, and most often in mammals. Lions and wolves and other such social species are prime examples of this. For example, in the absence of a strong alpha male, a female lions may step into that role, going as far as displaying increased aggression and even growing a mane!

    As an undergraduate math student, I am pretty sure the complex number set C is in fact a continuous field. You are right about one thing however, that is a spectrum usually refers to a one dimensional continuum. However regardless of number of dimension, a spectrum (which is a continuum) will always allow more variety than any discrete system (which a binary system falls into) that's more points between 0-1 than the entire collection of binary numbers of any digits(dimension), that is just a mathematical fact.

    • @AlquimistEd
      @AlquimistEd Месяц назад +2

      @CommanderRedEXE Месяц назад +7

      @@AlquimistEd Except binary does exist in nature, meaning discrete systems do. Animals that sexually reproduce, same as plants, do so using a BINARY system, I.E. a female produces eggs in some capacity and a male produces the sperm that fertilizes the eggs.
      This is, biologically, true for all species. Even those who can change their sex, they do so utterly and entirely, even on a genetic and physiological level.
      Humans however cannot do this. We cannot genetically and physiologically change our reproductive sex.
      Sex is, and always has been, BINARY. Until around 2014 Sex and Gender were used interchangeably.
      Not trting to be aggressive just point out a fallacy.

    • @TurquoiseAndAjenjum
      @TurquoiseAndAjenjum Месяц назад

      @@CommanderRedEXE Except... That's literally not true. Sexual reproduction does not neccesitate a binary. It is just the exchange of genetic information between two organisms, through gametes, to create a new individual. There is Sexual reproduction between gametes of the same size, which are not usually binary (Isogamy), there is Sexual reproduction where the individuals are not ''Male'' or ''Female'' as in they both produce the big and the small gametes at the same time, and there is where they change the gametes they produce as a function of their enviroment. Even if you take the last two examples as a binary, the first one isn't, and it isn't some ''weird'' thing, it's the way most unicellular eukaryotes and some multicellular ones reproduce. Sexual reproduction is not binary by definition.
      You seem to be confused about how organisms change sex. No species changes genetically in order to change it's sex. The fact that they can change their sex is proof of it itself, they already possess the genetic information to be the other sex, they just weren't expressing it. A change in their enviroment usually triggers this response.
      About physiology... Oh buddy... Where to even start? If humans couldn't physiologically change our reproductive sex, we would be extinct! There would be no puberty, which is by definition a physiological change on reproductive sex. A function (physio) of reproductive organs changes. Menopause is another easy example. Birth control wouldn't work, hell, menstruation and pregnancy are physiological changes in reproductive sex.
      The fact is, no, sex isn't and hasn't always been binary. It's mostly binary for animals (not even eukaryotes) and all over the place for plants. That's the most you can say.

    Humans don't have genders, they have sexes. Any biological organism that sexually reproduces has a sex - for humans this is Male, Female or (in extremely rare - e.g. 0.001% of people - instances of actual genetic diseases like Kleinfelter's) Intersex.
    Simultaneously, inanimate objects cannot have a sex because that is a biological descriptor - it would be nonsensical to say that a word, or a toy, or a pair of pants was 'female". But it is sometimes useful as a practical matter to create or highlight their associations with the kind of behaviors and roles that the biological sexes are associated with, and so inanimate objects can have genders - it can make sense to say that a toy or a pair of pants is _feminine_ if it has a strong relation, association, similarity, connection, etc to human females.
    That's it, that's the whole story and there is nothing more complicated - biological organisms have sexes, inanimate objects (can) have genders, and in the case of human beings for almost all intents and purposes there are only two sexes.
    We can definitively say then that there is no such thing as a "transgender" person, since human beings do not have genders any more than a Toyota Camry has a sex.
    "Transvestite", somehow considered to be derogatory today, is actually a much more accurate descriptor, because it merely identifies a kind of person who dresses in the clothes or accessories that are commonly associated with the opposite sex, e.g. A man who wears dresses and high heeled pumps. If one is born a man they are still a man their entire lives regardless of what they do, and it is no more a matter of identity or choice than one's species is. They're still free to wear a dress, or lipstick, or call themselves mary, or anything else, but they are still just a man doing all those things. Even surgically mutilating themselves and remove parts of their bodies or having attached parodies of a female body does not change that.

    That said, just becase these kind o definitions are flawed does not mean that gender isn't a real thing, becase it isn't really that hard to create consistent models for it given everything we know about intersexuality, how hormones affect the brain, how neurodivergence may play a role in it, and how neither of these things need to be cured, just managed; the idea of having different genders and gender roles is just an expression of that, one that is useful and doesn't necessarily need to lead to biology denial or surgery, which is what many people seem to be afraid of.
    Not that surgery shouldn't be considered as a solution for people who suffer from body disphoria (as long as it isn't caused by any other psychological or neurological condition that can be treated, emphasis on CAN because there's no established treatment for body disphoria besides surgery).
    People have a RIGHT to be happy as long as it doesn't hurt anybody else and I'm not a paternalising as*hole who puts in doubt people's ability to choose what's best for themselves just because he thinks he knows better than them how they will feel in the long run.
