Michael Gambon is a good actor and all, but Richard Harris was the perfect Dumbledore. Kind, soft and gentle, but with an unspoken power and fierce intelligence behind it. I wish he hadn't passed away.

"Kind, soft, and gentle, but with an unspoken power and fierce intelligence behind it." You put it well and that's exactly how I feel about Harris' portrayal too. He was the perfect Dumbledore. It would have been a treat to watch him portray Dumbledore through out all the movies. What a tragedy! I would have especially like to see that immense power and intelligence coming through a gentle, and stable presence in the battle with Voldemort at MOM. I felt like Michael Gambon's portrayal of that scene was indicating that Dumbledore was struggling to fight off Voldemort. That's not at all the Dumbledore that's portrayed in the books. Sorry, but Harris was just perfect.

The first actor from the HP family to pass away, breaking the hearts of fans everywhere, was Richard Harris. His untimely passing in 2002 after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease meant that he couldn’t reprise his role as the beloved Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts and mentor to young Harry, in future films. Harris wasn’t just an actor playing a role in the first two Potters - he was Dumbledore, the same way Daniel Radcliffe actualized Harry and Robbie Coltrane embodied Hagrid. His passing led Michael Gambon to replace him in the role, but fans have largely agreed that there was something singularly magical about Harris’s initial portrayal of the character.

Harris could've easily done the later books' more serious and scary Dumbledore scenes; He just had little opportunity in the first 2 films because there barely are any. But, as one example; Consider the scene when Quirrell runs in and reports the troll, faints, and the Great Hall devolves into a panic. Harris' Dumbledore BELLOWS the line -- "SILENCE!!!"
Harris would've nailed Dumbles through and through, full stop. Gambon is a great actor I'm sure, and as Dumbledore he's fine, but Harris would've been better.

It is so perfect, I say is, as I can go back and watch the first two films and appreciate the performance for what it STILL IS, to this day... Nothing but SHEER BRILLIANCE!
I am not necessarily a fan either, but the films are so neat. Alas, I have not watchted Prisoner of Azkaban, order of the Phoenix or the Halfblooded Prince, so I have some back logging to do at some point.
If Mr Harris was still alive... I would imaging that he would be flabbergasted with the Hogwarts Legacy Shenanigans, but seeing this video, he might have cared less and just say how stupid people are being as he was an oldschool actor, from a different time, a much better time!
To end this comment on a more favourable note, the voice he uses is so ancient sounding... Which is perfect!
He's kinda like the long lost brother to Gandalf in a way, the older and wiser. Gandalf is more active mind you but still, I see something there.
Anyway, hope you're resting in peace Mr Harris, atleast you are free from the insanity of the world at present, and ty for giving so much to the Harry Potter films!}:>]

I think they all enjoyed being on the films or at least enjoyed the aspects on being on the films. It’s just that there are a total of 8 Films of Harry Potter so they all probably got tired of constantly being asked on interviews about Harry Potter throughout the 10 year run of HP, I certainly don’t blame them. Alan Rickman certainly got tired of being asked but from the behind the scenes footage he enjoyed his time being on the HP set, even going so far to stick around on set to watch Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson shoot their scenes.

The only question I've had about Richard Harris as Dumbledore is if he would have been able to pull off the more serious side that comes out in Goblet of Fire and the duel with Voldemort in Order of the Phoenix

I love Richard Harris as Dumbledore but Michael Gambon has the energy that I think is necessary for those later films, some of the scenes of Dumbledore fighting Voldemort or the scene with the Inferni I couldn't imagine Harris in, even if he was a couple of years younger and lived past the second film

Actually with the scene with Voldemort, Richard Harris would be the perfect Dumbledore, coz he would have been perfect for that "battle" where he was literally toying and playing with Voldemort. 😂😂. The most powerful wizard of that time causally toying with the most powerful Dark wizard and his right in hand, both at the same time 🤣🤣.The movies changed it to where it looked like Dumbledore was struggling where we was not.

  • @wakt21

Richard Harris was the perfect grandfatherly Dumbledore - just how JK Rowling initially described him in the books. Richard Harris was the perfect Hogwarts headmaster who made Harry and his friends feel really welcome there, giving Harry a true home in the process. I never got that warm vibe with Michael Gambon.
However, Richard Harris never participated in any serious major duels as Dumbledore in his short but brilliant Harry Potter career. This is what made Michael Gambon the perfect warrior Dumbledore for me. I cannot imagine anyone other than Gambon pulling those off now - his acting was superb in his standoff against Voldemort in the Department of Mysteries, as was his merciful pleas when he drank that awful potion in the horcrux cave.
I'm not doubting that Harris could have been an amazing warrior Dumbledore, too, but something about his appearance in the second movie has since convinced me he probably would have been too frail to participate in any major battle scenes. That said, it does leave our imaginations open as to how Harris could have pulled off any major scenes from the third movie onwards. Richard Harris was, as I say, the perfect Dumbledore to make Hogwarts seem like a safe and secure place for us all.

Richard harris could have fit well with a more book accurate version of the Voldemort fight. In the Book Dumbledore was said to be toying with Voldemort without much effort and Harris would have pulled it off convincingly. This type of fight won't have required much body moments at all.

When Michael Gambon took ever the role why did they completely change Dumbledores look? With the shorter greyer beard and replacing his extravagant and colourful robes with this thin flimsy grey hermit robes? Its like they were TRYING to make him look inferior

To give both Richard and Michael their own place as dumbledore in the films. To show that Michael was not replacing Richard. He was finishing the work that Richard had started.

I'm sorry if this sounds insensitive but I'm glad Harris decided not to speak in his native Irish accent for the role - it would've been distracting. Am I the only one who thinks this way? I've got nothing against the Irish accent but for some reason it just wouldn't have suited the character

Gambon lacked the subtle qualities of a wise and experienced wizard. The ability to yell, was certainly a plus to Gambon especially when things got dark. However, the ability to express things like urgency, imminent danger, all while not yelling is the talent Harris would have brought forth to the films. It’s a shame he never got to fulfill it.
