RIP Kirk Douglas (December 9, 1916 - February 5, 2020), aged 103 And RIP Richard Harris (October 1, 1930 - October 25, 2002), aged 72 You both will be remembered as legends
Man oh man! Just listened to Richard Harris again in his luminous and heartfelt story honoring Kirk Douglas and my God! Mr. Harris, you lovely and crazy and glorious Irishman, your honest respect sprinkled with humble accolades for your childhood idol Mr. Douglas, always brings me to tears! That's not acting, that's pure spirit, love and unabandoned gratitude! Bless Richard, what a class act an Irish treasure shared with the world! Look at Kirk, he was beaming with pride, joy and that energy of life that comes from the thankfulness and respect of another of his acting peers! Outstanding!
You can always tell the stature of a man's character by how humbly & generously he thanks those before him for his success & career. James Cagney is another such giant.
A great man and even a greater actor. We'll always miss your Irish accent my friend, I sincerely believe wherever you are, you're loved and admired. We miss you too much! Amazing, amazing actor indeed... RIP
His King Arthur was superb! Charming, loyal, highly principled, and completely focused on making Camelot more civilized. He was also very attractive and charismatic. Keep your Lancelot, Jenny! Arthur has it ALL over him!
I knew Richard Harri's Cousin a Jesuit Priest who lived in Limerick. every time Richard would come back to Limerick he always sought out Fr. Paddy and instead of saying hello he had the same greeting "Paddy are you still praying for me you're my only hope of getting into Heaven" Fr. Paddy lived to be age 99 so I am certain Richard made it into Heaven. I met him once in Limerick what an amazing story teller I just sat there listening and laughing at his stories.
Lord bless you Richard Harris! What an eloquent, generous, honest and soulfull story teller and his sincere humility and gratitude came thru in abundant measure! What a class act and Mr. Harris never lost his boyish cheeky smile and his youthful passion for life, love, vocation and rabble rousing with his good dear friend and comrade in arms, Peter O'toole!
It's amazing that saying 'thanks' costs nothing, but means so much. It also shows that being kind and generous need not be by means of money, but by both kind and decent words and actions. We need so much for of these values to play out in life. It's a lovely clip.
I saw Harris on stage in London, and I saw Burton do Camelot in Los Angeles. Both were great, but Burton was born to the role of Arthur in that show. And Vanessa Redgrave was more masculine than Franco Nero in the film version . . .
Richard Harris my all-time favorite actor. So in love with him when I was a young girl... okay still am, and Camelot one of my all-time favorite movies. You may be one of the greats to others, but to me you're the greatest. ❤️
This is an exquisite example of not taking no or relinquishing your passion for what you believe in and what do you feel you can accomplish. Well done Richard Harris, It wouldn't of been the beautiful work of art but it came with it were not for your determination. Thank you! Steve Gardner
@Joseph Preston yes Harris and douglas clashed personality wise, but they obviously didn't bare any grudges towards each other, and they let the past go,
I met Mr. Harris during the road show of Camelot, til this day I cherish the memory and his autograph...he was an amazing talent and storyteller....ty AFI for posting, fabulous channel too...thumbs up !
One of the greatest talk show guests of all time. I used to love his stories when he was on Carson, Griffin, Cavett etc. back in the sixties......especially his drinking stories with his pal Peter O'Toole.
Its funny that Danny DeVito hosted this, Richard Harris when working with Russell Crowe on Gladiator had said they would go drinking in his old hunts in his native city Limerick, Harris died before they had a chance to do it together, so to honour his memory Russell Crowe visited Limerick and Harris favourite pub, this all comes full circle when the local chipper which is owned by Danny DeVitos cousins brought Russell Crow some fish and chips to eat
I was just reading a story when Harris gave Michael Caine a spliff, Caine left to get a cab and was laughing so hard no cab would give him a lift so he had to walk all the way home laughing lol
Are you a Leprechaun? Do you each Lucky Charms for breakfast daily? Do you get some kind of Lucky Charms discount? And finally, can I have some of your pot of gold?
Delightful eloquence from Richard Harris. Well done to Kirk for his generosity of spirit re the casting of Camelot. Jaysus, Harris but you're missed. :-)
Richard Harris, Peter O'Toole, Kirk Douglas, Richard Burton...those wonderful days when upper crust class was the norm and not the exception. My father is a big fan of them all, and he passes his love of them onto me. I grew up admiring these guys more than the actors of my era - the 70's to the mid-80's. Legends, all of them. As of this writing, Kirk Douglas is the only one still alive at the incredible age of 102. Wow!
You have to love this heartfelt tribute! Harris is the kind of person who knows exactly why he's there that night, and you just know he means every word of what he says!
I had an afternoon with Richard Harris, drinking with him in a bar I used to go in, in Fulham(my manor, in London)..top geezer, very humble, funny and giving in conversation..I liked him, before I met him..loved him, afterwards..RIP Richard..and Kirk..x

R.I.P to this legend who died exactly 7 years ago today on the 25th of October 2002, this guy knew how to have fun and i honor you on this day sir, R.I.P i will never forget you. Richard Saint John Harris (1 October 1930 25 October 2002) you are missed.
Touching, by the way there are great actors in the audience, Lehman and Nicholson and many more...really great to watch such videos that have stored such moments of time.
I'm sure he would have done an extraordinary performance as Dumbledore in the following movies. It's a shame a lot of HP's fans underappreciate his talent and nuances. He will always be the best.
This is a real treat! LOVE Richard Harris, and yes, MacArthur Park is my all time favorite song...OF ALL TIME!! Can't explain it..it just gets under my skin. God Bless You Both!..thanks for posting.....
I gotta say that Harris looks a like a fucking god with his silver hair and his specs. That suit is awesome as aswell. He didn't lose an ounce of that Celtic charm. Just an absolute boss. They don't make true hardcore Thespians like this anymore. The ones that work hard and play harder.
But I still can't deny it's poignancy. It's amazing that the guy getting roasted is still alive while Harris who was much younger than Kirk has since kicked the bucket. The way he expresses his admiration and gratitude towards the elder Douglas is so innocent and almost childlike, making him seem so much younger.
Powerful life lessons in this short clip. Douglas understood the key fact that is all but extinct these days -- ye need not have to like someone to work with them and profit from it -- and Harris demonstrates what true, genuine gratitude and appreciation, respect and honor, sounds like. That too has become rare.
IM HERE TODAY BECAUSE THIS LEGEND DIED EXACTLY 10 YEARS AGO!!! but no im not sad and nor would he want anyone to be sad, im here to remember him, his work and his amazing life, RIP harris!!
If RH led a complicated life, and had many facets to his personality--some good, some not--the one facet I always admired was the mind and heart that so truly understood Arthur in "Camelot". He "got it" and knew what the role of Arthur meant to him, literature, musical theatre, and world history. So many thanks to RH and Kirk Douglas for facilitating that.
Both actors might have had strong egos, but they both had well balanced egos...this is a fantastic tribute....and Richard Harris had a half decent voice by the way, check out MacArthur Park.
Loved the story of Harris been given the last rites by the priest and not regretting a minute of his life well lived. That been said, whether he is above or below, we will never know.
Joseph Preston Well that's one way to look at it. Here's another way. A Millenial like myself would likely not even know about Kirk Douglas even if he had a A grade career if not for his son's work and the same can be said about Harris if not for his role in Harry Potter. It's a way for the younger audiences to be introduced to these legendary actors.
