      I agree 💯
Might is right is the way of whole society in Pakistan. For anyone in doubt about this you can just walk into any housing society in Karachi specially the ones where middle class is also living like on the outskirts of DHA Karachi. You just ask the middle/lower class residents how they are treated by the administration there and then compare it to the upper class in the same society .
You will have your answer that the apple is rotten to the core.

Health care and education is free there yes which sounds great but its managed terribly in Canada and even the US, I'm not saying we're perfect but the pakistani system of going about with patients is way better than Canadian or American system which has alot of insurance involved and usually you have to wait a very long time for approvals of documents and insurance to actually get major surgeries done, which at times can worsen the patients condition and this is coming from someone who has faced this issue. Even within the UK its notorious that patients have to wait weeks to actually get appointments from general physicians. I'm sure the treatment itself is better however alot goes on behind the scenes for a simple surgery or appointment to be made.

The current situation in Canada is challenging, especially for new migrants. It takes about 7 to 10 years for newcomers to properly settle and find decent salaried work. Most recent migrants are students who don't have family support and live in terrible conditions. They don't really have free healthcare either, as they aren't Canadian citizens yet, so they must buy health insurance, which can cost $100 to $200 a month. If you move to Canada from a lower-middle-class background, you might find it a lot better than Pakistan, but if you're from an upper-middle-class background, you'll likely have second thoughts about why you even moved. The first four years here will be filled with stress, anxiety, and depression.

      Couple of things….
      I am a she… not he..and i am from India.
The only reason that’s keeping me in Canada is that as a woman i am more secure, independent and safe in canada. I don’t like living here at all. If someone wants to leave any South Asian country, they really should. But just an advice, don’t come to Canada. Choose another country. People of Canada are moving away from Canada because of economy and all of the things Adeel noticed. Everyone deserves to live in a country where they are treated with equal respect and opportunities, regardless of their gender, religion, race and caste. Canada is that place but that doesn’t mean it’s a heaven and all is shiny and happy here. Just saying, if someone wishes to start their life in a different country, choose something with better economic situation and where you can afford a home. Because now in Canada, good luck buying a home👍. You can’t afford it, unless you have been living here for 15 years.
But i hope things get better. Government is trying to make it right.
And i know people who have moved back to India merely because of health care. I had to go to India for medical reasons. It sucks that the country you live in can’t provide you healthcare care when you need it. It is a big problem. Mainly because they don’t have enough healthcare workers.

    • @shamankaur-m5t
      @shamankaur-m5t 2 месяца назад

@Werchmant people have right to criticize the country they live in and government that is serving them. I had a terrible experience with healthcare here. As a resident, i have every right to criticize and ask questions about things i pay for with my Tax. What do you expect? Ask no questions? Say nothing Just because i immigrated here for better opportunities and living standards? Should I be grateful for it? Sure! I am. But not critique it’s bad things? Nah! I am living here. Paying tax. I will criticize. And then give chance to government to fix it. That’s how any country excels and maintain their living standards.

    • @shadowknight00
      @shadowknight00 2 месяца назад +3

77 years granted may not be long enough when it comes to a country, but it still is a long amount of time. We wouldn't be this negative if we had any hopes of betterment. Living here is like being stuck in the past. Nothing gets improved, empty promises by the politicians, hate crimes, street crimes are rampant. Inflation is booming, jobs are scarce and the ones which are available offer pathetic salaries which don't even cover the commute from home to workplace and vice versa. Broken roads, no gas, high petrol prices, extremely high electricity bills along with load shedding,Water issues and so on. As an 18 year old, who hasn't seen any improvement in these 2 decades, I am hopeless of this nation and it's people. It's like we don't deserve happiness. So yeah, it's easy to say that don't lose hope, but it's harder to believe in it.

Canada is trying to do major efforts to reconcile with the natives and indigenous people..
This message is now read at many public events. It reads like this.
    For example:
    Land Acknowledgement for Toronto
We acknowledge the land we are meeting on is the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit.

The comparison between Canada and Pakistan is ignoring the working class in Pakistan. The guest says in Pakistan, you won't become homeless in a month. Is he aware of what happened in goths on super highway? Has he ever seen the homeless living under bridges in Karachi? He is a well spoken guy but he like many overseas and upper class Pakistanis they forget the pains of working class. Like how people (not the guest) glorify "everyone has househelp in Pakistan" jaisay ke househelp is some robot devoid of feelings and needs.

I respectfully disagree with Adeel on the topic where he argues that life in Pakistan is better than abroad. As an international student living in Australia, I cannot fully comment on life in Canada, but I want to point out that the quality of life is significantly better abroad than in Pakistan. Especially as a resident of Karachi, I felt that my life had no value, anyone could shoot you for a wallet or a phone. As a woman, there was always the looming threat of becoming another rape statistic. I am a graduate of a well-known business school in Karachi, yet I was stuck in a toxic corporate culture where my DGM would tell me it was time for me to get married or comment on the color of my lipstick. I felt unsafe ALL THE TIME.
I am not suggesting that there are no crimes or issues here, but I can support myself by working part time at a fuel station overnight, and I do not feel unsafe. I walked 40 minutes home at 11 p.m., and I wasn't scared of walking on the streets at night. I'm more afraid of ghosts at night than of humans here.
People do not need to be graduates of a specific university to be respected. You can be a high school dropout working as a server and still financially support yourself without anyone looking down on you for just being a waiter.
Racism and healthcare issues exist, every country has its problems, but that does not take away from the fact that one is treated as a human being here in first world countries.

What adeel is saying is true , there are lot of problems in west but only those who live on sustenance wages here know the truth, I am not saying it's worse than Pakistan but situation isn't rosy as it seems esepcially in Canada post covid, thier economy is stuck for past 10 years with same GDP per capita and taking in too many immigrants recently has created a housing & job problem. Single payer system like Canada's sucks big time , many people die waiting for surgeries and many people are not able to find an apppointment with PCP . In US if you don't pay th medicall bill , no one is going to come after you from collection agencies esepcially if you live in liberal states and you can negotiate the medical bills with agencies as they get sold over multiple times to other debtors.

If you actually enjoy doing any hard work you would love to reap the benefits here. You would also hate it if you don't believe in equality for humans, and think that there should be a entitlement and a class difference. I feel like a lot of people hate Canada because they are just not able to abuse the Canadian system as much as they did back in Pakistan.

@@Sid-fi1mc yes true but then don't forget when u go to Canada the locals there don't see u as there own. The locals there hate that we 3rd world immigrants r coming there and leeching off of there legal aid. So there is still a bit of class difference and the locals there will quite often remind u that u r not one of there's. There will always be a class difference wherever you go.
That's why Indian there have built a strong community and have a monopoly.
Pakistani on the other hand r selfish and divided therefore once u land there u r pretty much on your own and it's a hard struggle from the bottom and if u were from the upper middle class u will really face alot of struggle when comparing to your life in Pakistan.

Independence is something we must continuously fight for, not just celebrate. We won our freedom from the British, so why are we still shackled by feudal lords and corrupt elites? What good is independence if the same oppressive systems remain intact?
Remember the Bengal famine-who decided the fate of millions? It was Churchill, who didn’t care about the suffering. Today, even though we’re independent, we still face wars and conflicts that don’t serve our interests. If we were still under British rule, we’d be fighting their wars-whether in Afghanistan, Africa, or Ukraine. Our independence means we’re no longer puppets of foreign powers, yet the injustice continues, just from different hands.
To those so-called intellectuals who romanticize the colonial era: you are part of the problem. Your defeatist attitudes waste resources and perpetuate a cycle of negativity. Stop glorifying the past and start fighting for true independence-for a nation free from both foreign and domestic oppression.

Hello Shehzad. I have seen only the first 20 minutes of this podcast and would like to make a few comments on what I have seen so far. Adeel Afzal's views about independence, the partition, the Two Nation Theory and the actions taken by the Muslim League in the two decades preceding the partition are very popular among young intellectuals these days. Some of them resonate with the views you had expressed at the Black Hole in Islamabad also.
I feel these views are well-intentioned and espouse very noble thoughts. However, I feel they are affected by a logical fallacy called 'Presentism'. In this fallacy one views and passes judgement on past events, beliefs and practices etc. through the lens of one's own times, morals, and ideology without knowing or factoring in the conditions, prejudices, ideologies etc. prevalent at the time those events took place.
Therefore, one doesn't examine and judge those things in the context in which they took place. For this reason they appear strange, even evil, when viewed in one's present day context, which might be (and usually is) totally different from the context prevailing in that phase in history.
In this regard I would like to say that the theories and principles that were in play during the Pakistan Movement were those that the people of that time adopted considering their circumstances, thoughts, fears, and aspirations, in light of the ground realities existing at that time.
We might say (and we could be right) that those theories or actions gave birth the mayhem we face today. We make these assertions because we have actually seen their consequences and because we have the benefit of hindsight. The people living in those momentous times were acting in a way they thought most appropriate to safeguard the best interests of their community in their own circumstances. They had not seen the consequences of their action, nor did they have the benefit of hindsight. Therefore, we should give them the benefit of the doubt and accept that they did what they did with the best of intentions and it was right according to their time and circumstances.
At the time these events were unfolding they would not even be aware that seven or eight decades after these events, some individuals who did not witness those events and have no understanding of the circumstances in which they occurred will declare them wrong. Hence, they should have refrained from taking those actions so that people do not criticize them 75-80 years later.
I hope Adeel also sees this comment.

We can compare their decisions to what was happening in India, or what was being said by critics of the time. If they had the foresight that the decision makers lacked then it is more than fair to criticize the decisions.
And even that is not the case it is still fair to criticize people for taking decisions without factoring in the consequences of their decisions.

@@ThePakistanExperience The 1920s, 30s and 40s were turbulent times in India. The equilibrium that was in place between the British and the various communities since India was created a Crown Colony was going to be disturbed upon the departure of the British.
Whenever major changes take place and the whole dynamics of a region change, chaos is unleashed. People and communities try their best to protect themselves, and secure maximum benefits for themselves.
The same thing happened in India also. Different interest groups emerged, each wanting concessions, and maximum benefits. Two major parties emerged: the Indian National Congress, and the All-India Muslim League. There were other parties in the fray also, but these were the major players. They represented different sections of society.
It is true the Hindus and Muslims had lives together for thousands of years. Even though Muslims had always been a minority in India, a power dynamic had evolved between the two communities. Some contributing factors were Muslim rulers and Hindu noblemen, Muslim nawabs/landowners and their Hindus generals and soldiers. There were some areas where Muslims were more influential, while Hindus wielded influence in others. Later on, both communities became subservient to the British.
That dynamic would change once India gained independence, and before independence the form of government that seemed most likely in the to be independent country was democracy. The Muslims became apprehensive of losing all clout, especially after the experience of Congress led government of 1937.
They were the ones who had lived with the other community, and they would be the ones to live in the aftermath of independence. They are the ones who felt apprehensive, and you can’t fault them for trying to protect their interests. Their apprehensions were strong enough for a major part of the Muslim community to support the Muslim League. True, there were many Muslims who opposed what the Muslim League stood for and they supported the Congress. But support for the Muslim League among the Muslims of the Sub-continent was sufficient for it to have achieved its objective. Mind you, these were the people who were on the ground living through those experiences; we weren’t there. We have no idea what they were going through or what drove them.
The two Nation Theory was not invented by the Muslim League. It had been invented much earlier, i.e., 1907 in Lahore by the Hindu Mahasabha. Their rallying cry was “Hindu, Hindi, Hindustan’. The Congress also talked about the Majority and the Minority Communities. A workable formula was agreed between the Congress and the Muslim League in 1916 under the Lucknow Pact. However, it never got implemented in full. Muslim League pressed for its implementation consistently. The Two Nation Theory espoused by the Muslim League talked about the political reality of the people living in India. It never talked about the freedom to pray and fast and the right to organise qawwali nights but about the political divisions and more representation in assemblies and government. The Muslim League had also agreed to the Cabinet Plan in 1946, which would have meant no Pakistan but more opportunities and representation in a confederal India. So, it is not right to accuse them of religious bigotry.
As far as looking at criticism by contemporaries is concerned, yes, it would be there. Every ideology has its supporters and detractors. The supporters would argue in favour, and the opponents would oppose it.
As with any ideology or any human undertaking there would be both good and bad in the Muslim League’s stance too. But the thing is, whether with all its flaws it was able to achieve its objectives or not? Whether in spite of its flaws it managed to create a country in which Muslims could be masters of their destiny, whether good or bad?
They should not be faulted if people coming after them couldn’t build on their achievement.
So, even if according to you the founding fathers were wrong, the state of Pakistan is a fait accompli, and we can’t undo partition, the more important question should be: how best to make it livable? How to improve its current state?
Another interesting question would be if today’s intellectuals were living in that era, and had not been exposed to the virtue signalling, progressive ideas and morals of the second decade of the 21st century, which side of the divide would they have chosen?
