Instead of fighting the tension to put on the belts, you could have saved yourself a lot of trouble by first loosening the tensioning bolts on the engine mount before slipping the belts on the pulleys. Then once the belts are in the proper grooves in the pulleys, retighten the belts to the proper tension by turning the tensioning bolt.
the engine was de-tensioned before attempting to install the belts. I wouldn't have a fighting chance to get them belts on with the engine in the running/tensioned position.
