  • I replaced the blades in my DK2 wood chipper with Power King replacement blades. Probably not something DK would recommend, however, they were recommended by the Home Depot website. I installed them and they work great. Now with four blades, I can have two in the machine while two are being sharpened. The new blades are working great!

    It’s nice to see that they made the blade replacement pretty easy. 👍👍

      I sharpen them. This is so I can easily swap two out and sharpen them when I have time or send them out. Having two always ready to go jeans I won’t get held up.

    I have the same model agree that it's a beast. What is the recommended torque for the bolts that hold the knives on the drum? Should I use thread locker of some type?

  • @bwireman5441
    @bwireman5441 7 месяцев назад +1

    Removed bolts from cutter blades using an impact wrench with 160 lbs. of force which was necessary to even begin to loosen the bolts. Inspected each bolt and notice the threads had flattened due to the application of too torque when installed plus the threads were left completely covered with loctite residue. One of the bolt heads was damaged as it was frozen and would not turn at all. Used chemical release agents and a map torch and nothing helped. Cut the blade with a diamond cutter then pried it up breaking the blade for removal hoping it would help release the bond, again no success. Used a 3-foot breaker bar and broke off the head of the bolt, which required me to flatten the top and drill out the bolt and then tapped the hole to be able to just replace the bolt. Installed the first blade and rotated the drum to find it was impacting on a metal guard on the side. Then I removed the drive belts and pulley to find the set screws on the rotating shaft had been over torqued and stripped allowing the shaft to float sideways. Great video, I laugh every time I watch it, which is the only thing funny about this piece of crap machine. Be prepared to spend many hours when you replace the blades, oh and I bought 3 sets of spares as the first pieces had many large breaks after only 8 hours of using them on my limbs. Removing the drum, the mounting bolts are misaligned and require a pry bar to remove the assembly and god help you when trying to replace the parts. I removed the drum shaft bracket so I could decide what modifications were necessary before it could be replaced. Several of the bolts were bent using a hammer hitting the nuts partial rotated so as not to damage the threads and even that required me to use a round file to open several of the holes. So now, I could beat the mounting assembly back onto main unit, wow what a pain in the arse. I think that the over torquing of the blade bolts during the initial assembly made them brittle causing the problem observed with premature breaking and cracks that I noticed with the blades.

    Enjoyed your video! I'm looking this up because I have to change and sharpen the blades on my DK2 OPC 566E Chipper. I knew it was simple but I wanted to see it done before doing so myself. The Power King blades you have for the 506 are basically the same and as you noticed work perfectly. If you purchased them from DK they are $99 Canadian each (out of stock atm). So getting the Power King blades is a great deal. I suggest stocking up a bit if you intend to use your chipper as I do (a lot!). Also, the drive belts on your 506 are out of stock on the DK website and are $39.99 Canadian each. But, if you pull off the drive belt cover and have a look most likely you will see they are 1148 (going from memory here) belts which can be picked up locally at Walmart for $14.98 each. Parts for these things are hard to come by since they apparently come from china. Ugh.
    For my chipper the replacement blades are a lot tougher to get. I don't know why but DK decided to use 12 inch blades on the 566E instead of the 13 inch blades that are on the other chippers that are the same size. So I searched everywhere and had to get them from DK for $99 Canadian each. They did ship them rather quickly and they are the correct blades but wish I could get them locally.
    Anyone getting a Wood Chipper do a bit of research about blades and belts and replacement parts. It's nice if various models use the same belts and blades. I haven't watched or searched through any of your other videos so if I ask something that is already covered sorry bout that.
    My question is what maintenance do you do besides oil changes? How often do you grease the bearings (both sides)? I cannot find any information on greasing the bearings so I just grease them with a few pumps on each side every four hours or so.
    Oh, looks like the PK blades are out of stock on Home Depot (online) as well.

      Thanks for the info! I only grease every week or so. Sometimes not even that much. Machine is great and I’m so glad I got it when I did!

    Hello sir, thank you for creating and sharing this video. I believe I have the same model chipper. I have only used it once. I have plans to use it again in the near future. I am wondering if the oil has to be changed. If so, have you ever changed the oil in yours. Will you post a video of about how to change the oil? Thank you.

      Thank You. I've priced them. Just a tad over $5k. California is set to ban Gasoline engines in a couple years. But those already owned will be exempt. They are also banning generators. But nobody seems to know if the dual fuel propane units will be allowed. All this is going to force Farmers and remote landowners to shop outside CA. I cannot even grasp the concept of banning generators when our power grid is so unreliable. My power has been shut off about 20 times this summer for fire safety. And my parents installed insulated wire when the line extension went in spring of 1973. However, other houses off the main line below are bare wires. So we all are shut off. Solar is not a option with me either.

      @@garywilson9640 CA is worse than NY. That really sucks and that price is way high, but I guess that is how things are right now. Everything costs twice as much (or even more) than it should. Good luck with all that. I really hope none of that comes to fruition.
