    Presentation: 1:36
    Gameplay: 4:45
    Story: 12:20
    Conclusion: 13:34
Assassin’s Creed Mirage is the latest entry in a series that has long forgotten its roots, but Ubisoft has assured fans that this time, things will be different. Is that true? Has Assassin’s Creed gone back to what made it successful in the first place, or is this latest entry another Ubisoft marketing Mirage? Before I get into the review I need to stress that while I won’t be spoiling any major plot points, there will be some minor gameplay spoilers such as what menus look like, different enemies, and different abilities, but all of the footage will be from the first few hours of gameplay. For context, the preview build we saw a few weeks ago took place about a third into the game. While you don’t need to Play Assassin's Creed Valhalla to understand the story here, I highly recommend you do.
Visually, Mirage is up to the standards that Ubisoft has set in the past. Will it blow you away? No. Does it suffice? Yes. The environments are designed expertly as always and Baghdad from certain angles looks downright heavenly, but other aspects of the game take a nosedive into the nether. Back from Valhalla are the conversations that look stiff, unfitting for the characters, and the lip syncing is consistently dodgy. Not always noticeable, and when the game shoots for a full fledged cutscene things do look great, but it’s worth mentioning that the mini cutscenes that take place suffer from the same talking head syndrome that plagued the Arkham series. Where Assassin’s Creed and Arkham continue to parallel is in the soundtracks. The Arabic instrumentals that accompany your journey are played well, and I greatly appreciated this game opting to not overuse the hell out of Ezio’s Family. It’s a good song, an iconic song, but I’m sick of it.
Baghdad is an excellent looking city, with an overwhelming amount of people, flora, markets, buildings, boats, camels, and the works. It’s a busy city and it lends itself to the social stealth that has a greater focus here. No skyline is without a tall perch begging to be lept from or a post that connects buildings, and your paths across its roofs. There's a wide variety of colour here and the contrast of an oasis against the harsh grains of surrounding sand are as much of a sight as the detailed fortresses and towers that watch over the low rising buildings and awnings that glaze over the streets. It feels familiar, in a setting sense, to the series roots, but also in terms of iconography. There's multiple bureaus this time around and we spend a majority of the game cloaked in white.
Attacks and jumps have the proper impact or lack thereof if you are landing on soft surfaces, and Basim’s voice actor does a fantastic job here, as does the voice actor for Rashan who’s raspy near constant growl is just mesmerising. Rashan also has by far one of the best assassin designs in a while, easily clearing any of the outfits from the last 3 entries. Basim’s different outfits look great too and I appreciated the variety here in both heavy armour and nimble robes. I can’t show them all, but I think most will be satisfied with what is on display here. What is further on display is the animations, of which most are overhauled.
The Assassins Creed Mirage gameplay seen here is from the opening few hours of AC Mirage. The AC Mirage gameplay featured in this Assassins Creed Mirage Review may not match the specific praises or criticisms because the example I would show would be later in the game and I want to keep this Assassin's Creed Mirage review spoiler free. This AC Mirage review will build on my previous statements regarding the Assassin's Creed Mirage trailer, preview, and while the Assassins Creed Mirage trailers have been accurate, this review aims to provide further context to the game. If this new Assassins Creed game becomes the new Assassins Creed standard, I'd say we are in good hands for now. This review will not discuss any Assassins Creed Mirage leaks or spoilers, and instead only show early Assassin's Creed Mirage gameplay. If you want to hear more from me you can check out my Assassins Creed Mirage first impressions video, which was mentioned in this Mirage review. So, should you buy Assassins Creed Mirage? This review will let you know!

Sooo so glad to hear the Black Box missions feature actual different approaches, and aren't actually just a layered linear mission with some minor differences that don't actually change the approach, like what the Preview Event Mission looked to be.

  • @witt4884
    @witt4884 8 месяцев назад +49

This might be my favorite stealth gameplay of series. I’m very surprised that mirage has taken the Hitman-lite/MGS approach to enemy camp and base design and really made them puzzle boxes based around reconnaissance and stealth. Like when I was eagle scouting one of the last missions of the first investigation, I could tell that the mission has several story based ways to break into the base and then there were ~4 organic ways to enter through the environment. And then I went back to the base to complete a side quest there and found 2 more hidden entrances and passages. The downside is if you don’t want to take you time, planning it out, and spending ~5 minutes spotting every enemy with your eagle, then you can’t take advantage of some of these more layered designs of the base. You do still get solid opportunities to stealth your way through like in the og games, but the extra layers of the map design make putting in that time so rewarding for those that want to do it.

The biggest issues with the chain assassination isn’t that it’s in the game, but just the choice to make basim teleport, I was playing miles morales yesterday, and I created a 4 way opening in the enemies window during a stealth section and used perch takedown, wall takedown, web zip take down twice and then was able to hit a 5th guard thanks to the dismantling, and that’s what games should strive for in these quick stealth chains. Imo anyway.

I watched 5 other reviews at this point, some of the others being IGN, JayVee and SkillUp. They all agree that this truly is a return to the older style and it is done very well. SkillUp disliked the story and said it wasn't in depth, engaging and Basim didn't have any development or arc, whereas others have said this is one of the best stories in the AC series. Personally I always wanted an AC 1 style middle eastern setting with updated graphics and a new story, and Mirage looks great and meets that criteria for me. Stealth is amazing; Unity level stealth, by the looks of it. Parkour actually looks quite good because of the city and its environment, Basim moves very quick and fluid and uses his environment well. All in all, it ticks a lot of boxes and our latest adventure in Baghdad looks to be quite promising. I'm super excited to try it tonight

honestly your not going to get a good review form these options you chose, i would say keep looking at more reviews, because there are many other things this dude and many others don't really touch on and it's not quite good enough coverage, some people are divided including myself.
of course i have learned to never purchase any game at launch, the marketing is always filled with lies and people typically fall for false advertisments from the bigger reviewers.
i mean when they say it's a true return to the older style they all seem to ignore the things that go right against that statement from this games mechanics, and sometimes they praise things that most people hated, like the tailing or escorting missions or the stupid fetch quest stuff, that shit is the crap most people hate and some of these reviewers seem to skipp talking about these things for some reason.

You're honestly one of the most straightforward reviewers I've seen in a while. Many times, I see a famous RUclipsr rise to glory through reasonably harsh critiques only to soften the blow the moment they get a free copy or an early hands-on preview of a game. Watching your coverage of Mirage is truly heartwarming as a fan of the original AC games. Never got my hands on the RPG ones since I just knew in my body that they weren't for me. And I've already set my expectations low to middling when I get to try Mirage. Thank you for your coverage! I know someone will probably reply to my comment claiming that I'm shilling for a shill, but that's really not the case. I'm quite the realist personally, and I definitely see flaws and call 'em out whenever I can. The goal isn't to spite or cause hate to brew. It's to find a common goal of productivity however we can. Kudos to ya!

I preordered Mirage against my better judgement, but this video helped rationalize the decision to me.
I actually enjoyed Origins & Odyssey for their RPG elements, but very much disliked Valhalla because I feel it strayed too far away from the Assassin's Creed formula.
it looks like this game still has some of the mechanical negatives of Valhalla, while stylistically being a return back to its roots, which in my opinion is completely fine.
For me, an AC game needs these 4 things to be a true "Assassin's Creed" game.
    1. Stealth
    2. Social Stealth
    3. A good story that stays within the lines of the series' premise
    4. Hidden Blades
I always thought that Odyssey and Valhalla would've been more appropriate if they were sold within a spin-off series, rather than marketed as an "Assassin's Creed" game.
It would be cool to see Ubisoft do this, since I feel if they weren't marketed as "Assassin's Creed" games, they would be received differently, but since they carry the "Assassin's Creed" name, they are being compared to games of that name. Which they are nothing alike.
Odyssey is a terrible "Assassin's Creed" game, but it is a phenomenal Greek Mythology RPG.
If it weren't an Assassin's Creed game, I feel like it could be judged more fairly and appreciated, rather than pretending its something that it's not.

They use the same locations, but maybe different time periods. Then if you play one story and then play the other one, during a time. And location that the two characters would meet, coats to secret cut scenes. You can get between the two actually meeting up. I also want to mention that they sped up the climbing/parkour animations in a post-launch update.

Man, i wont lie. The parkour here is pretty much the only thing i was really focusing on. Its one of the main reasons i go back to the classic games. Like you said, the freedom of movement was hard to master but super fun. Seeing L + X to run was super disappointing. Maybe i'll give the game a go when it goes on sale but im sort of tired of the AC formula theyve been going with these past years. All that said, i hope whoever plays it enjoys it.

I was skeptical; here in NZ it's $99 for the Deluxe version. I am not a player who loved the RPG series although Origins was top of the litter.
I have to say that Baghdad is stunning and beautifully realized. For me personally this is a solid return to legacy and I simply wanted to support the concept so that Bordeaux perhaps gets another shot with more budget, freedom, and time to refine this formula.
So far I am very much enjoying the streamlined and refined experience. It is thrilling to be back in the Middle East, the soundtrack is powerful, the setting is superb. The team should be very proud. I am happily enjoying an AC game that I was unsure about and don't regret paying full price at all.

I fell in love so I bought like 90% of the games in the series thanks to a sale and now have a lot of catching up to do. 3 is the oldest one I have so ill prob just start there and work up to Mirage. The grind will be interesting and Im sure i will catch hell for not starting at the first one but I have a hard time enjoying games made before 2010. They felt amazing when i was a kid but the gameplay and physics is usually too outdated for me to enjoy anymore. Ill read about em to understand the beginning of the series lol

Anyways I guess you don't need to know all that. This game looks awesome. I have seen tons of videos of the game. I am hoping that ubisoft keeps with this style of ac. I miss the old school ac games so much. They need to make their future ac games just like this but get even more back to their roots. I mean the game is called Assassin's Creed.

I have loved all the AC games I played apart from Valhalla, which felt like a massive slog. I am easily distracted by side quests, and struggled to get on with the main story in Valhalla, which means I haven't finished it yet, and maybe I never will. I pre-ordered Mirage as soon as it was possible to do so, pre-downloaded it on the day before release, and started playing as soon as I had time. I'm playing it on a high-end PC using an XBox controller, and the visuals are stunning, but I do feel some of the movement and controls are a bit clunky, which could be down to my lack of skill or some ageing effects on my conroller. There are some small control changes that I like: I never liked having to press the right stick for Odin's Sight in Valhalla, so the use the left cursor key for the equivalent in Mirage feels a lot easier. Having both Light (press) and Heavy (hold) attacks on the same button makes sense, but also takes some getting used to after having played using two buttons, one for each, in previous games. Once again there are glitches, even after the day 1 patch, but nothing particularly noticeable in game play, but there is a visual one where the tails of characters' coats occasionally stand straight up behind them instead of hanging down! 😆 I'm only a couple of hours in, and finding that going from a high level character in Valhalla that could take on all the guards in a huge fortress in brutal combat to Basim's need to avoid detection is a big learning curve, but it's reigniting old muscle memories from the earlier games. I did use Stealth in Valhalla, because it was easy to kill one guard close to another without being noticed, but greater skill is required in Mirage because you WILL get noticed, and EVERYone nearby will start shouting for the guards!

      @LBWWCCC 8 месяцев назад

Hey dude, here are my thoughts on the game and would love yours or anyone else to add to the commentary provided in this review and the comments here. Here is what I've come to the conclusion of:
Mostly worse story than older AC games after a short act 1,
Difficult combat is fine but has only a few attacks that never change with no weapon variety,
Entire progression systems that just make the game easier rather than more interesting, varied and unique, with a stealth system that does incredibly little to challenge you after the few hours it takes to master it and only adds a few tools that can't help its lack of iteration going from hour to hour (sleep dart=non-lethal throwing knife etc with no reward or incetive for using them) This is made worse by the fact that the "once you've done it a few times you've seen it all" feeling I got the progression system just makes it easier to do what you've already been doing relatively easily after 4-6 hours in.
No levels that change in a way that make you completely re-think your approach with tools you may have and require a
Critical lens to create stakes (just bigger spaces with more gaurds),
Very little enemy types or variety when compared to all games in the series past 2,
Health bars that are out of place for the vision they want to strive for,
Extreme lack of inovation from what unity or games of its time without a surprising number of those earlier games' features,
Talented actors/ actress' without a good script or dialogue to invest you at any point, mostly delivered in the last 90ish minutes
No plot stakes or sequential buildup creating anticipation and intrigue with characters that have clear archs you care for as it can be completed in any order leading to a lack of basic narrative progression,
A beautiful city without anything gameplay-wise in its districts to differentiate it from any other part of the city as unique or fresh,
Very little to do outside of the wonderful city,
A solid but short act 1 that does not add or iterate throughout the game in any aspect with the promising gold mine of a setup it presents,
A step back in parkour from older AC games in terms of features removed with nothing added to make a unique experience
This is essentially every trap I hoped it wouldn't fall for = The old wonderful formula with absolutely nothing done to create something that differentiates hour 4 with hour 25 in any core aspect. It's not "bad", but it had everything needed to be a really standout AC title.
Technical issues aside (gone with moderate to powerful hardware today of course) Dishonered 2 provides all of these things and so much more with branching gameplay/ narrative, steller innovative level design that changes and makes you really analyse its ever unique challanges giving multiple narrative and gameplay choices to the player that they must use their wits to figuire out and are rewarded for etc
I wanted Mirage to stick the landing, and I'm really sad to see it hasn't. I don't want the old AC formula to be a casualty of this game's many issues, as had it iterated on that formula slightly each hour with even just a solid narrative it could've really worked. Had it not had the issues I listed it might have showed Ubisoft higher-ups that green lighting these types of games is not only profitable, but what the community at large loves and wants to see evolve- myself included.
Cheers, from one AC player to another.

Wasn't Roshom in AC Valhalla or was that a different character? And Basim having super powers kinda works since isn't he like the reincarnation of Loki? So that means he has more Isu DNA. We all know the more Isu DNA the more superhuman you are. And Basim is likeable? Really? That's great, because I felt in Valhalla he was kinda flat EXCEPT the time he talked about his kid AND the end where he betrayed us. Those times he had actual character depth. Also, unfortunately I won't be buying Mirage since I don't have a Next Gen Console.

This is what I expected and a score of around 8/10 is pretty typical for AC since all of them have something to criticize but always pretty solid overall. So, I can’t wait to sink my teeth into this one and am thrilled that it’s not another open world and more traditional. I think the hottest take I have about the franchise is the rpg style of “parkour” blends much better with overall stealth. I always saw the parkour as a way of getting around, and stealth as its own thing. And I always was confused when people refer to Assassins Creed as a “Stealth” franchise. I always played it as an action adventure with stealth elements. Especially with the Kenway saga. With the rpg games I actively noticed It was more fun to try and 100% a fort, and I found myself climbing more things when in a stealth arena. I may be crazy. But if Mirage is more focused on stealth I really don’t mind the rpg parkour.
