Shapiro is literally the embodiment of a Karen. Always whining about something in his high pitch lady voice, that he has no business even discussing. @@MasterMote Gender expression/gender identity are different from biological sex. No one's arguing that an MtF trans woman possesses XX chromosomes, or is a 'biological woman/female'. I would assume this is the "biology card" (misconstruing biological sex and gender, or arguing that gender always conforms to, or should always conform to biological sex).
This is why there are different terms such as male, female, man, woman, sex, gender, trans, cis, Etc.; because they differentiate and define these things.
Gender identity is the personal sense or identification of one's gender, which conforms with biological sex in the majority of people. Gender nonconformity is recognized in medical literature and in historical contexts. It is completely "normal" in the sense that; it's an observed pattern that some people do not conform or identify to their birth sex.
Gender expression is a persons presentation/interests/behavior, that are traditionally associated with gender (masculine or feminine), and/or are seen as gender norms/roles. Historically, basic things such as Education were seen as "masculine", barring women from pursuing education due to the strict adherence to these norms. Nowadays in the US, this type of discrimination isn't problematic because of legislative changes like the Civil Rights Act, though it still creates issues in a social context.
Examples of modern gender norms/roles are; the expectation of wearing gender-specific clothing, certain careers and activities being seen as masculine or feminine (without a biological basis). Women being expected to be more polite, accommodating and passive. Men being expected to be more assertive, dominant, and emotionally unaffected. Certain actions, such as women raising children, and men making money and being financially independent, are expected.
So if you hear someone say "abolish gender norms" or something, they're probably referring to something along those lines.
Obviously it would be impossible to "abolish" these, as well as the fact that some gender norms can be beneficial, and many people are not strictly attached to these ideas; But this does not discredit the argument that the perceived importance of adherence to norms that do not have any logical or biological basis, which do have social consequences for not adhering to, provides no benefits and can cause harm.
At the end of the day It's about decency and respect. I don't think most men wouldn't want to be told to "man up" or be seen as less manly if they are emotionally affected by something, or get judged because their wife makes more money than them. And if someone presents and identifies not as their birth sex, they made that choice, and there's no benefit to disrespect them or invalidate them.
@@MasterMotethe gender spectrum is created through traits given a name by society, people can call something feminine and therefore make a man who contains those traits think they are a woman. If no gender roles exist the. Most cases of transgender people disappear (more specifically gendered language etc) due to them just being a person.

He's a class act - Tyson. l venerate scientists like your average person does with movie/TV stars, athletes, musicians, etc - well, music is very important - but he's an idol. He makes science fun because he's so passionate and excited on his favorite subjects and jazzed about all the other sciences. ☮

I love that Neil told Dave Shapiro that instead of arguing why it should not exist why don't you learn why it exists.
Yes, because "it's real and it's there" simple yet powerful statement. Why wouldn't you want to know more about something that happens all over the planet and HAS for thousands of years.
The act of acknowledging something and not trying to slap labels on it or pretend it doesn't exist is literally what science is about, learning and discovery. From a purely scientific perspective, there's literally no justification behind Ben Shapiro's argument. If the point of it was not to have men in women's sports, then this can be resolved simply by having some sort of test to be able to make a scientific distinction, sure. But it's silly to treat trans people like freaks on that basis. People like Ben Shapiro want the world to fit into neat little labels, and the world is not inherently black and white. But from a scientific standpoint, you incorporate the complexity into a theory that comprises everything, you don't simply pretend it doesn't exist. That's just willful ignorance and about as unscientific as you can get.
Unfortunately, that had nothing to do with the actual question. We can learn all about "why" transexuality exist. Then what?
Does that change the actual question or the reason for that question...no it does not.

@@DocRealTalk Ben Shapiro in his "debunked" series regarding the transgender spectrum specifically talks about not having terms for transgender people and to simply treat them as men or women with mental issues that need to be addressed. So yeah, "pretend it doesn't exist" is a thing, or at least it is for Ben Shapiro. He didn't mention that specifically in this video though, so I can understand the confusion.

Scientists ask questions to get answers. Sensationalists ask questions to get soundbites to suit their needs.
What a bs, Neil did not want questions to be asked, and answers to be found and shown to the public because people might make conclusions he does not like. So if in the future some study shows that transgenderism/homosexualism is not solely the result of some unchangeable biological conditions we must hide those studies from people or just not let such studies about these subjects exist.

He tried to explain a biological fact which HE GOT WRONG, because biology is much more complicated and there are more than 2 sexes and there are even more genders. Both are science and evidence based.

Shabibo's strategy has actually a name; it's called 'gish-galloping'. Which is basically considered disingenuous in formal debates. The speaker speaks very fast, comprising several different topics in one short fast-paced diatribue. That way, the opponent finds themselves discombobulated and not knowing how or where to start working on their defense. Notice how Tyson stopped him here before Shabibo's could start adding more and more BS to his speech. Tyson was fully aware of Shabibo's gish-galloping and wanted nothing to do with that.
That's why Shabibo looks good against young college students (inexperienced at debating) while anyone with a modicum of experience will always demolish him. Once they figure out his script he's rendered powerless.

I think Neil articulated my thoughts better than I ever could. But if I were to commentate on this conversation between the two of them, I wouldn’t characterize it as Ben getting shut down. I think it’s much better characterized as someone who gave his guest a real chance to articulate his ideas, and that it was an actual conversation between two people. It’s really tough if not impossible to change someone else’s heart and mind if a conversation like this can be characterized as someone getting destroyed or shut down.

I am conservative and I am quite passionate about science, along with the scientific method. The condescending tone at the beginning of this video is deeply offensive and steeped in prejudice.
Ben Shapiro has never suggested anyone go to a re-education camp. He has never excused, nor advocated for, violence against trans people, or any other people. He has merely stated that the biology of men and women is locked in our DNA, and cannot be reversed, no matter how one feels, thinks, identifies as, lives as, or alters themselves through surgery to be. Like it or not, males are born male. Females are born females.
That’s all he is saying.
I don’t disagree with either of these men. I think both make solid points in their stances on the trans-gender phenomenon. To simply write off either point of view as ignorant because you disagree with their stance is showing your own ignorance, not Ben Shapiro’s or Neil Degrasse Tyson’s.
Please keep in mind that Ben Shapiro is very devout as a Jewish man and sticks to his orthodoxy as “gospel truth.” In that way, he feels that this is all a matter of God’s design. As God is perfect, he sees this as man’s (and woman’s) perversion of God’s perfection. Due to his devout faith, he should not be faulted for having his beliefs as they are.
Most conservatives only support science when it backs up their religious beliefs or convictions, but then claim it to be bullshit when it doesn't back up scripture. Not saying that is you, but speaking from what I've experienced .

Its not even a scientific conversation. No literature that parses at genetic/social/clinical explanations for being transgender and the conversation goes into the biology of transness but they don't actually discuss any of it. No talk of androgenic disorders, neurological differences, cognitive pathologies - nothing. Not too mention, ben shapiro is pulling the usual trick that many 'debaters' do is that they interview LAY PEOPLE on incredibly nuanced and complex topics. Neil is a physicist, he's not a Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Geneticist, or Physician that specifically handles trans health. He wouldn't know shit about this topic and positioning him as a worthy debater because hes a scientist is ridiculous.

9.) What objective criteria do they use to determine they are this? Saying they are x, y, or z doesn't make it so anymore than they clicking their heels together saying "I'm whatever" makes it so.
10.) Feeling you are something doesn't make it so, whereas, for just one example, chromosomes, hip structure, muscle output, bone density, etc, etc,
are objective and imperical, and override feelings any day of the week as believing one is tRaNS is ultimately subjective.

I am glad you brought up sports, because this is where I say our society does/should have issues with how we are handling trans issues. As a man with daughter's, I do have skin in this game. When biological males are given space to intrude into women's sports and take away the win that women in sports would receive then I say that is wrong. What is the point in having sport separated by gender if we are going to then take that away from them?
It is demoralizing to a woman to train so hard only to not be able to "win" because guys are now taking over their sports. And males should care about how we are taking away the female self-esteem.

If anything i would stipulate some trans women to be at a disadvantaged, because undergoing testosterone deprivation evidently causes muscular atrophy. This means muscles shrink! It is difficult to put on muscle mass when you are on androgen deprivation therapy. Therefore this will in turn effect performance levels.
Bone structure varies from all types of women. Large/small etc.
Even cisgender women may produce too much testosterone and this may effect puberty and perhaps, in theory, cause a disadvantage in sports performance too.

I do agree ben (conserv.) shouldn’t be as agitated about the topic as he tends to be because it’s basically like arguing with someone who believes 1+1=3 on why it’s 2 and not 3, all you’re doing is wasting energy.

@live fornight the whole argument about trans individuals is simple. If you are not suffering from gender identity issues then it does not concern you. I’m not gay and gay people don’t intersect in my life that would cause me to have an opinion about them, they are not stopping me on the street causing me to be late for work, they don’t interact with me getting my daily coffee, they don’t pay my bills or interact with me and my partners relationship. I simply don’t care about how they love their lives. What I do know is that Ben cares and it’s interesting why?. Even if we don’t understand gender fluidity, it simply does not matter. It’s not for us to discuss. At least that’s how I look at it.
