      Also, I just have to say it's insane how huge of a platform RUclips is. Derral throws around millions of watch time minutes in this video, but if you do the simple math, 1 million watch time minutes is just about 2 solid YEARS of time. That's amazing.

  • @RubberWilbur
    @RubberWilbur 7 лет назад +4

    Its like a good baseball batter. You practice, examine the pitches, and keep swinging for singles, doubles, triples. You don't go for the homerun but every once in awhile you hit that sweet spot and you knock it out. RUclips is the same way. You keep swinging and eventually you connect. Never stop swinging creators.

    This was amazing to hear, thank you so much for making this. I am currently getting a lot of views from browse features, and noticed some massive growth (for someone of my size) in the past few weeks. I think this is going to help me take my channel in the right direction. I'm seeing baselines every few weeks that shoot up significantly after some new videos. This was great, and should make a big difference in my channels future.
    One thing I wonder is, once you hit a baseline (establish a new one) how long would someone have such as myself (daily poster) to get to a new baseline?
    A second question is in regards to playlists - you are saying it's beneficial to make 2 playlists per week of content that starts with MY videos, but includes relevant videos from all people in my genre?

    • @derraleves
      @derraleves  8 лет назад +6

      +LoverFella it can be as fast as 20 - 40 days. For the second question- make at least 2 per week... if you are post daily you don't need to bring other people content unless it make sense for the playlist. For example, I have a few Tim Schmoyer videos in a few playlist and he has a few of mine

    Great information! I plan on rewatching this several times.
    At this point I want to start making a living off of youtube (if I can seem to build an audience.) Knowing how the algorithm works seems to be one of the most important things to making it here. Retention, collaboration, and uploading consistently seems to be the name of the game. I am curious as to how this all affects channels that only upload a short sketch once a week. Can those channels still survive with how youtube promotes content? It seems like back in the day that was what succeeded but now everything has gone into longer content with more commentary, or vlog related subjects.

    • @UltimateAviationHD1
      @UltimateAviationHD1 8 лет назад

      Dude you will NOT make a living off of youtube for a LONG time!!!
      You have practically a zero subscriber channel.
      And look, more than 300'000 other people have already watched this video and are all going to apply this algorithm.
      You have no chance...
      Sorry man

    • @LoganMcNay
      @LoganMcNay 8 лет назад +3

      Thanks. Love your optimism. I'm not saying I think it'll happen tomorrow.
      Learning an algorithm to how RUclips works isn't a formula to success, it's just the knowledge to use it to your advantage. It's a starting point to how to market yourself to gain exposure for your content. At the end of the day it doesn't matter how you use the algorithm if you aren't making good content. That's where you learn to better yourself.

    • @UltimateAviationHD1

      But Derral keeps saying that there is this one video that gets A TON of views and spikes your channel, and then he talks the whole lecture about what to do AFTER you got that video popular...

    Hi Derral, brilliant presentation and everything is in line with my channel. One video saw my channel grow (relatively) massively after it had a spike etc. But a few questions remain, if you would be so kind!
    #AskDerral
    1) You said the first thing you'd do is block advertisers - how do I decide, and how do I implement that?
    2) What can I do to repeat the steps of the video that created the spike in growth? I can't be certain why it grew because of this one video, but obviously I want to replicate it!
    Many thanks!

    • @derraleves
      @derraleves  8 лет назад +1

      #1 block in Adsense (Be Very Careful with this)
      #2 You need to make sure the videos that you release after the spike have really good titles and Thumbnails. Also, the content should be awesome!

How can I choose what ads are on my videos? Also funny you were talking about Chad. Nope. I never seen mail from him. He's probably really busy traveling or something. I miss loads of mail too. I have the most ironic analytics. On my recent high audience retention over 65%-80% videos in the past 3-4 months, those high audience retention videos have a lower amount of views. It makes no sense at all. This youtube thing is not as solid as people think... I also notice there is an mysterious force that kills a viral video fast. It feels like the stock market. A lot of unexplained space here.

    #AskDerral Is there a way to tell session time of the people I bring to RUclips? I often embed my videos on other sites, should I not be doing that? I often get people to come to RUclips by watching my reviews in the first place, but I never realized that I should stop sending them to my website to see my written reviews and giveaways after. :/
    Also, thanks so much for this video. I have learned a lot. Looking at my analytics, I see those spikes happen and then a higher baseline after a couple. Of course my format is not ideal for watch time , so that's a bit of a bummer. I will need to try to put out more reviews or figure something out in between to compensate for practically all my videos all being less than 5 minutes.

    • @RobertMertensPhD
      @RobertMertensPhD 8 лет назад

      Session time is really Audience Retention, in your analytics. this is one of the stats he mentioned that youtube pays a bit of attention to. Audience Retention is important in getting people to watch more of your video, hence, more minutes of watch time.

    • @Azralynn
      @Azralynn 8 лет назад

      Robert Mertens No, he said session time is the entire time that the person is on RUclips after watching your video. Like say a person comes to watch my video; I want to know how long they stick around after watching stuff, or if they just leave after mine sort of thing.

    • @RobertMertensPhD
      @RobertMertensPhD 8 лет назад +1

      I get that, now, after watching a second time. I was also wondering if there's a way to know if the session began with your video or someone else's, and you can get sort of an idea by looking at traffic sources. Most of mine is from Suggested Videos, but a strong source is RUclips Search, which says it could have started with my video. Some of mine also come from external sources, which could have been google search. Yahoo search, Facebook, Google+ and more, which means the session begins with your video. And then, did the session end with your video, because at the end of mine, I suggest visiting my website, which I'm not sure is a very strategic move, except that I post and organize all of my videos on it. Unfortunately, I see that less than 1% (3.8% of 12%) of traffic comes from my own website, so it may not be a good idea to suggest, as he says, leaving the session. Apparently, however, either there isn't much traffic to my website, or there isn't much traffic back. But I do that on all of my videos. Now that I see this, I may have to stop doing that - it may be killing my channel. I could also look over my website analytics to see where traffic is coming from or going to. There's quite a bit you can glean from this.

    Thanks for sharing this Derral. Very interesting about the baseline jumps. I have noticed this several times on my channel and it's been linked to very similar similar type of content each time (landscape photography vlogs).

    Derral - great video! Lots of excellent information to process and put into practice :)
    Question - at 40:00 minutes you talk about proper placement of ads in videos. Could you explain this concept a bit more in depth?

    I'm floored by the amount of stuff I learn from every one of your videos! The problem I'm facing is how to incorporate everything into my channel. We're geared towards getting veterans and youth on some fun hunting and fishing adventurers, but there's a LOT of similar channels out there. How do you stand out in a situation like that?

    A seminar like this is great, it really gives you time to show and share your vast amount of knowledge on youtube and audience growth. I loved it personally, watched the entire thing haha. Now for the difficult part, retaining and applying all of this knowledge to our own channels!

    Hey Derral, thanks so much, love your videos ! I have a question, when you say "what you do straight after the peak is what's important" can you be more specific? If I am putting out the best quality I can every day, if I then have a peak what can I do ? Should I have a special video stored up in case this happens ? Or go on a social media offensive ? Many thanks

    Outstanding description and easy to follow. I've seen several of your videos and am working on gearing up to start my own channel soon. It'll be with cheaper equipment for now but it looks decent on screen. I'm an inactive duty Marine and am going along the lines of outdoor knowhow and crafts, that I haven't found anywhere but know about and have cheap easy shortcuts to make it fun and easy for even the novice. I know you're tremendously busy, so I don't expect a reply. I just wanted to thank you so much for all the great ideas and advice. Not to mention a new purpose in a hobby that may or may not make a little money in the future. If nothing else, I'm having double the fun doing things I and my two little girs enjoy and will be able to use for the rest of our lives.
    Best of luck to you in the future and thanks again.
