To extend your argument, it seems that being a foundling creates a break of the Mandalorian duality of heritage and culture and their armor (specifically the helmet) hides the fact that they are not Mandalorian by heritage. Mandalorians could thus accept a foundling as Mandalorian in sort of a don't ask, don't tell fashion. If this is "the way", then, for a foundling to remove their helmet would be a public telling that they are not Mandalorian by heritage and thus could force them to be disavowed. I think it is more of the former. The Mando is still on the path of becoming a Mandalorian. Until the point where he "earns his name", the armor IS his identity. Look for 3 "Feats of Strength" in the coming chapters. In most stories concerning this kind of journey, the seeker usually is required to perform three feats and return with a trophy from each and relate the tale to the group. This gives a good amount of significance to the part where the Armorer tells him his sigil, and Mando replies that it was not an honorable kill. We may have already seen one feat accomplished, in the defeat of the AT-ST walker. (Yes, I know he was working with a non-Mando and that she helped to take it down. However, HE was the one that rushed it and finished it off. She was not an enemy, so the kill would be honorable.)
@@bulbafett5001 IMO the offshoot explanation practically is a necessity. There's no way the 'helmets on' thing can be passed off as mainstream mandalorian tradition without creating a ton of plot holes with Rebels/Clone Wars, which would require frustrating retcons.
Adoption has been a common practice among the Mandalorians for several millenia. To be adopted by a Mandalorian is no different to being born by one. I think the foundling theory is on the wrong track. It's probably a new practice that has not yet had its purpose revealed.

@Thomas Hoffman In the presence of Boba he probably could of gotten away with that as technically Boba is him as he is a clone of Jango. But not in the presence of Doku and the Separatist leaders. I don't believe he was actually born Mandalorian but was too a foundling. I prefer his backstory with Star Wars Bounty Hunter a game in which you play as Jango and tells the story of how he became the template for the Clone Army. Pretty much in that game he tells that he was a orphaned during a raid by the Conquer Dawn and a Mandalorian named Jaster Mereel took him in and raised him. I like that story however that is not considered cannon.
Dash Star hey man thanks so much for explaining this, I was so confused on why he specifically couldn't take it off when many madalorians have before. Thanks a lot!
So basically the Mandolorian thinks that him being a Mandalorian is a privilege and that he needs to keep that privilege. But its easy for blood born Mandolorians to take off their helmets because they have the Mandolorian way, in their blood.
The reason those other Mandalorians take their helmets off, is because they're part of Death Watch. They're Mandalorian by blood, not by creed, and they don't follow the Mandalorian code (because they're terrorists lead by the dark side, exiled from Mandalore).
@@HexJK A Mandalorian is allowed to take their helmet off regardless, just The children of the watch(The group Din was a part of and raised with in the show) did not believe this. Later you hear Bo-Katan, a former Mand'alor(Leader of Mandalore and Mandalorians) explain who the group was, stating they were actually "Religious Zealots", people who broke away from mandalorian society.
When a youngling has earned the right of a signet representing their Mandalorian family name, only then they would have won the right to show their face?
Its both.. you can be born mandalorian or a convert which is basically what foundlings are. This is the difference between the mandadalorian of clone wars and our mando. Born mandalorians identity as a mandalorian is tied to blood and foundings its tied to the armor

Also when you become an U.S. citizen from a different country you pledge allegiance to the U.S. forsaking all other nations including where you were originally from, at least that's how it's supposed to be :/
@@kevinjust6740 No you can be a dual citizen or keep your old citizenship as a naturalized citizen unless your country of origin doesnt allow this. You do have to swear allegiance to America and in doing that you are forsaking allegiance to your nation in the sense that during conflict assuming you can serve you serve America, even if your country of origin is the enemy during the conflict. In more recent times since there hasn't been a draft this hasn't affected anyone since the only way they would fight their country of origin is if they chose to by enlisting. An Iraqi American choosing to fight against Saddam's government would be an example, while an Italian being drafted to fight Italians even if they didnt wish to was something that did happen during WW2, this would be an example of forsaking your country of origin as a condition of becoming a citizen since you would be fighting your own people and subject to potentially mandatory military service you couldn't refuse. So in essence you arent forsaking your status as a member of another nation but you are forsaking your allegiance to that nation in certain scenarios. If you refuse to fight your own nation if the scenario arose by dodging the draft if one existed at the time you would likely lose your citizenship if naturalized for failing to carry out the obligations of an American citizen. I am not certain 100% this would be the punishment however I believe it would be since your refusal is a case of forsaking the pledge of allegiance to America you took when becoming a citizen. This applies to refusing to fight any nation but only this scenario would involve forsaking your nation of origin in a direct manner without having a choice if you wished to remain a citizen, I'm not sure what would happen if there was no draft but you were already in the military during such a scenario. It isnt allowed to disobey orders but I'm not sure what the punishment is if you do.

yeah nice theory but the S2 E3 tells us that mando is a child of the watch which is an ancient religious group of mandalorians that interpret the mandalorian law differently
I'm going to bet that this "No helmet removal" rule is just a thing for foundlings, until they manage to gain a "signet" and therefore become fully mandalorian.
I thought that the reason why this particular Mandalore did not remove his helmet was because he originally is not of Mandalorian background and as such was only adopted by into the ranks if he SWORE an oath to never show his true VISAGE to others lest he reveals his true non-mandalorian origins! So this vow to never be seen by others without his helmet protects his status as a Mandaloran by not allowing his true face to be seen by others! If others did see his alien face his status as a TRUE Mandalorian could be challenged and he could be stripped of his armor and banished from the order! But, this was my own understanding that I took away from the few episodes that I saw. Anyways, that is how I see this particular MANDOLORIAN vow to never remove his helmet in front of others. It is JUST my speculation and not based upon any inside knowledge of the show. ...THIS IS THE WAY! ✊✊✊
I think his clan particularly after the purge is unusually fundamentalist. They see them selves as the torch barers of a culture about to go out. So they forsake any personal identity for the sake of taking on the identity of the culture.
@@endorsedbryce that makes sense but I bet they won't be mad if someone like from clan wren remove their helmet because from what I have seen all clans have different customs but all clans follow the core custom of what is to be Mandalorian
I suspect that this could be a mixture of culture surrounding Foundlings, with a case of a new faction that we haven't seen before yet, one that that has a deeply religious connection to their helmets. It would explain why that Clan Viszla member also didn't take off his helmet.
Sean Patterson Well no: The original Mandalorians could be either human or alien. The title of "Mandalorian" was originally designated to those who followed the original Mand'alore (Essentially a great warlord). Just anyone conspricting into the ranks of the Mand'alore ceased after the Mandalorians started settling on planets. I do not know why this development occured but I have my suspicions. The helmets looked different in the past. I do not know why they look the way they do now.
@@marryc9394 Yes, the term Mandalorian does refer to any one of any race that follows the Mandalorian traditions and religion. And there are many races that are part of that. Most numerous being humans. But the original race were the Taung. And the shape of their face that is the reason for the look of the Mandalorian helmet.
Sean Patterson No. the Taug were the ones the mandalorians built their culture on. They are not mandalorian, nor were they. They fought the ancestors of the humans in the early beginning of star wars. The humans who adopted part of the Taug culture are the ones who later became the mandalorians which is why the original helmet was shaped like the head of a Taug. It is like comparing American culture to British culture. Sure, American culture has its roots in British culture, but it is in no way the same as British culture.
@@marryc9394 I haven't found anything that separates Tuangs from Mandalorians. They appear to be one and the same. The Tuangs created the culture and were also the earliest Mandalorians. Unless you have some information to the contrary, please post the link!
I think because it could be that foundlings have different rules or that the tribe in the series have different rules than the other mandalorians or that the tribe consist of foundlings only
Foundlings were one specie (or race as fantasy and sci-fi biology rules kind of mess both*). As now they are different ones, they hide identity to not cause xenophobia. Actually it was kind of same in one "Donald Duck" (if I remember right) comic in my country where reach and influential people from Duckburg were gathering in secret, wearing masks to have fun together playing board games and feasting. Reason of masks was simple: many of them were political opponents etc. in public life and they didn't wanted to bring it to their free time. *simply race should look more similar, but different species can't breed to get fertile children (but in sci-fi sometimes unique biology messes with it again, see: "Mass Effect" Asari).
Simple: First armor is your true skin. If it is ever violated, then an entirely new set of armor is called for. The second armor doesn't carry the prohibition; it is replacement armor, and is therefore replaceable. If you can live all your days in your first armor, you are truly great. When the Covert was revealed, the helmets and other parts in the pile were cast-off identities. Once revealed, one must move on and become another.
it is so awesome to see another side of Star Wars this is the ultimate sci-fi spaghetti western of the franchise, the first season kicked a lot of A** but these last two episodes I am not sure what they are trying to do but I hope this is just character setups. they can piece it back together with the next episodes. it left me dumb-founded. we shall see?
john basterson this technically isn’t true. They were never asked to take their helmets off nor were shown to want to take them off. So why would they want to take them off??
I'd have to agree. The trial to become a full fledged mandalorian is a trial of combat where you are tasked with hunting something down. Tribal markings are a customary thing and all the mandalorians that are shown cannon wise have additional tribal like markings out side of color palet for clan. The mandalorian has no markings at all, not even clan coloration. He keeps the armor bare. So he is yet to be deemed a full fledge adult and must remain in the armor as of the Resol'nare to be deemed a mandalorian.
Boba fett wasn't a mandalorian but his ancestors were, as one almost became the mandalore before saying "This is too much responsibility." so technically I guess Boba fett counts. Unless he was a clone, kinda forgot but the concept seems familiar
The mandalorian chancelor in the clone wars series said Jango Fett was not a mandalorian, and that he did not know how he acquired a mandalorian armor and that he was upset of it. But maybe Jango, was like Din Djarin, an orphan adopted by the Mandalorians. Din Djarin states his name was recorded in the mandalorian archives. Maybe Jango was too, and something happened and he was somehow forced to remove his helmet, and then was banished from the Mandalorians and his named erased from the mandolarian files. And maybe he refused this fate and stole his past armor. And maybe there is something linked to his past with his request to have an unaltered clone he considered his son. It's just a theory, and I hope in season 2, with Boba Fett we will have answers... Since Boba Fett will be part of season 2 and was present in the episode setted on Tattooine.
@That sorta irish guy Nothing is Canon anymore, with Disney. Not even their own Canon. Read "Rey is Palpatine's Granddaughter. Oh..That's not going well with fans? She's actually the daughter of a failed clone of Palpatine"
What happens when he grows up and needs a larger helmet? Does he have a 5 minute grace period to test and put on a new one? If they give him an adult size to begin with and it falls off is he still Mandalorian?
I love that he has a sense of high respect and honor... same thing happens when samurai roamed the earth, when Adopted you just into a clan and grow as their child but in sacred right you remember what it took to raise that caliber and you don’t realize the hard work others have to put in in order for you yourself to grow as an individual. That’s why mandalorian culture is so great, they live as a furthered legacy. Great detail!
It's so they don't know how many of them their are. They can die and be replaced without people knowing. It's how you build your army in secret. It's also why he doesn't give a name.
So since he is the only one, who has not removed his helmet, then he must be the only non-mandalorian, wearing the armor, or at least the only mandalorian, that lives by the mandalorian code!
The Mandalorian never takes off his helmet? That can't be true! I'm sure he would have to take it off in privacy to clean it, maintain it, wash his face and eat! I don't think he sleeps or bathe himself with it on!
It seems obvious that his head has grown stuck in the helmet since he was a boy and therefore he really can’t remove his helmet, even if he wanted to. 😆

@@bulbafett5001 IMO the offshoot explanation practically is a necessity. There's no way the 'helmets on' thing can be passed off as mainstream mandalorian tradition without creating a ton of plot holes with Rebels/Clone Wars, which would require frustrating retcons.
*For Mandalor*
Adoption has been a common practice among the Mandalorians for several millenia. To be adopted by a Mandalorian is no different to being born by one. I think the foundling theory is on the wrong track. It's probably a new practice that has not yet had its purpose revealed.

I don't believe he was actually born Mandalorian but was too a foundling. I prefer his backstory with Star Wars Bounty Hunter a game in which you play as Jango and tells the story of how he became the template for the Clone Army.

America and Mandalorians have one thing in common. Guns as a religion.
And it gives them the ability to say no and do as they, as individuals, please.
America > everywhere else.

At that point being a mandalorian by blood wasn’t a thing, being mandalorian was a culture
I believe the remove helmet law/custom is a quirk of his clan and other clans deos not have this law/custom and is not universal.
I think his clan particularly after the purge is unusually fundamentalist. They see them selves as the torch barers of a culture about to go out. So they forsake any personal identity for the sake of taking on the identity of the culture.

I suspect that this could be a mixture of culture surrounding Foundlings, with a case of a new faction that we haven't seen before yet, one that that has a deeply religious connection to their helmets. It would explain why that Clan Viszla member also didn't take off his helmet.
I'm pretty sure the original Mandalorians were not human. They we're "alien" and that's why the helmets look the way they do.
@Romeo M didn't think about that. Fair point.

"Hey, why don't we tell this foundling he can't remove his helmet and see how long it takes him to find out it is a prank?" :)
Seems to be a seriously bad idea personal hygiene wise.
Once revealed, one must move on and become another.
it is so awesome to see another side of Star Wars this is the ultimate sci-fi spaghetti western

@@johnbasterson7938 The show has hardly been long enough to establish that. Only Mando was asked. So it could still be the reason.
john basterson this technically isn’t true.
Mando: Ill never take it off.
Star Wars Rebels: Ima pretend I didnt see that
Maybe he’s got a jacked up face like deadpool
To quote a line by a character from Jackie Chan Adventures: "El Toro never removes his mask"

Also Thumbnail: points towards boba fett
I feel like I listened to the same thing over and over for 10 minutes
Why did you have boba get in the thumbnail he isn’t a mandalorian he just wears the armor

That’s why mandalorian culture is so great, they live as a furthered legacy. Great detail!
It's so they don't know how many of them their are. They can die and be replaced without people knowing. It's how you build your army in secret. It's also why he doesn't give a name.
