- Last month, CAL FIRE - Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) officially swore in two new members to the OSFM’s Arson and Bomb Unit (ABU)’s Canine Unit.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Arson and Bomb Unit and with this anniversary, the Canine Unit is now re-introduced to the Unit, following extensive training and certifications by both newly assigned canines and handlers.
The Canine Unit supports the Office’s Arson and Bomb Unit mission to investigate the origin, cause, and circumstances of fires, explosions, and bombings on State of California property and in jurisdictions that do not have investigative resources to determine if fires or explosions are criminal in nature and to bring those responsible to justice. The ABU Canine Unit is an essential tool for our state law enforcement officers, in addition to local, State, and federal public safety partners across California.
Mocha is the Unit’s Ignitable Liquid Detection Canine and Flash is the Unit’s Explosives Canine.

I worked Philly Fire. Our first arson dog was Gentry. His partner was named Art Cykowski. Nobody could pronounce his name so we just called him "A to Z". A to Z used to complain bitterly the way they treated the dog on the fire ground. He used to say "Nobody gives a sh*t about me, they don't care if I fall on the fireground... God forbid, but don't let Gentry fall."
